AT&T Data Speed - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

My friend's 8525 gets about 200 kbit/sec here in my living room on it's wireless data, and my moto razr gets about 35 kbit/sec sitting right next to it.
(testing to dslreports mspeed)
Does that tell anything about what sort of data coverage I have here @ my house ? I'm a bit confused by all the data rates AT&T has, and which phones do what.
I'm in zip code 72801, Russellville, AR, USA
Thanks !

I may be wrong, but the 8525 has 3G Internet and the RAZR has EDGE.

At first glance, I'd say that the Moto razr is connecting over a GPRS connection, and the 8525 is connecting on either a really fast EDGE connection or a really slow UMTS (3G) connection.

exactly what i was looking for .. thanks !

just to give you an idea of what I have seen by testing on the same site with my herm100 on at&t.
from 42 to a max of 927. I usually in my home area (11214) about 200-300. nothing like what was advertised, 400-700 I called twice about this and they gave me $20.00 off one month... yeah... great.
so what is the max in edge and max in 3g? does anyone know what at&t allows?

Data Speed

Hi there,
Just bought this a few days ago and playing with it. Got the 16key Tmobile UK edition.
I have tried to use it as a modem for my laptop, but the speeds I am getting are 270kbps. I was expecting it to be quite a lot faster?
This is with a 3G icon at the top which I assume means that it is connected via UMTS.
Is this the speed I should be expecting? I am on the 8th floor of my building but have got 3 bars of reception (not sure if that is related or not).
What kind of speeds should I be expecting? on both UMTS or HSDPA?
I am with T-Mobile.
Thanks
you'll geh an H-icon when connected via HSDPA, which is faster than 3G.
yup... but what speeds should i be expecting?
is 270 low for 3g?

Hmmm, I believe that ~46Kbytes/sec is fastest speed with 3G (386kbits). With HSDPA (3,5G) you can have faster connections e.g 2Mbits, even upto 3,5Mbits if network supports its.
Edit // Ps. Mobile operator may require that HSDPA has to be ordered as "value addad service" so it may cost more than basic 3G connection (usually its not included to the basic contract)
This might help...

ahh cool thanks... so 270 aint that bad i guess...
i'll test out my speed at work where im getting hsdpa showing up see how that shows
I live in Leeds (UK), and have HSDPA service mostly when I connect to the web. I downloaded a 4mb file on it last night and it took just under a minute to complete. I was pretty impressed. You don't need WiFi on a touch dual when you can download at these speeds and when you have an (almost) unlimited data plan
Can't wait when Firefly or Opera 9.5 comes out.

well ... exactly!! when you have an unlimited data plan :\

Is there a way to check your internet connection speed?

How can you confirm on the x7501 whether you are running:
gsm
umts
3g
hsdpa
I am getting the H icon, but I don't think my speeds are matching that.
Thanks
kww
You can check here, but it may also depend on what part of the world you're in, whether or not this test will be accurate. I get excellent results on it in Lexington, Kentucky USA...
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
Thanks, it didn't work on Netfront, but did on Opera.
I got 775 kbit/sec
that sounds like HSDPA speeds at minimum, doesn't it?
Yeah, that's fast enough to call HSDPA. I hadn't noticed your American flag & AT&T icons before (don't ask me how...). I'm also on AT&T, but usually use my home wifi and keep my sim in an Ipaq HW6515a for everyday phone. Wifi is over 1100, usually. The x7501 isn't so fun to use as a phone, especially when I work in a rough environment and have to worry about dropping or breaking it..
That's the average speed I get on Mobile Speed Test, with radio 1.58 and 3G/H. I've gotten as high as around 1000 but that's rare. On Edge I never got above 150, and on older radios never much above 500 on 3G/H.
Happily, I no longer suffer on Edge at home! As of a week ago they enabled 3G/H in my county and the county to the east of mine, to the PA/MD line. Their coverage viewer doesn't even show this change yet. It shows 3G stopping about 10-15 miles north of Baltimore, but I can verify it goes all the way north until you cross into PA. I haven't seen any news or notification that this was going to (or did) happen, so maybe they are quietly and quickly rolling their whole network over to 3G?

Why is 3G Slow?

Ok I use have a Wing and ive never gotten a data plan because of the price. I finaly broke down and got a G1 cause there was more power under the hood plus anyone could develop on it being open. Well i got a deal on one and the price was decent so I got a data plan bundled with my original plan. Ive never used a data connection before so when I got home I started playing with it. I wasnt all that impresed with the connection speeds, Its almost like its on a crappy dial-up connection. The Youtube app is pretty much useless unless your on wifi it only plays about 2sec's before it buffers for a minute and then plays another 2sec's. Now is this normal? Is this what 3g really is? Am I missing a bigger picture here?. Heres some of the things i have done to try and get some sort of improvement.
Screwed around with APN's.
Tryed it in diffrent areas around the state.
Flashed it with 1.5 which i do believe came with a new radio.
Any input would be greatly appreciated, Im not putting down the phone as a matter of fact i love it, Im just not too fond of this connection technology.
I was dealing with some of the same issues.I installed Adrenaline and my connection seems way better
How is the coverage in you area? I've never had any problems with my 3G on my G1, always between 2 and 3 MBit connection...... Are you sure your carrier supports UMTS/HSDPA? Without those 3G is worth nothing..... Also make sure you are stationary when testing speeds.
Coverage is great ive never lost a 3g connection its just slow as hell and almost is useless to me, My carrier is T-mobile and wether or not it is supported i dont have a clue as to find out if it is.
well my test speed stationary was 38.6 Kbit\s with full bars, Doesnt even come close to your speeds. Any other Ideas?
When you're using your mobile network, does the 3G symbol show in the notification bar? Or does it say E? If it says E and you're getting those speeds then those are about right for the EDGE network. However, if you're connected with the 3G symbol next to the link, then those speeds are too slow. If it says E, make sure you don't have 2G network only checked under settings>wireless>mobile network. If that's not checked, then its likely you just don't have 3G in your area.
nope the notification is always 3G
Meh my edge is 10kb download, I would kill for 3g...
It takes miniutes to load pages and seconds to load google.

It's not the connection technology - it's either a problem with your phone, or just that your carriers network isn't very good and/or doesn't have the necessary backbone to cope with the amount of traffic generated by its subscribers. Given that T-Mobiles 3G network in the US isn't exactly pervasive, I'd hedge my bets that it is a network issue.
Here in the UK, I live in a very rural area, and I get 2.4mbps on my G1 via T-Mobile UK. Can't really tell the difference between being on WiFi and 3G given the actual processing speed of the device.
Of course, we're very lucky here in the sense that we are a small country (thing of Georgia and Florida combined) with a high population density. This means it is comparatively simple to get blanket 3G coverage (say 95% ish at least in terms of population).
Regards,
Dave
I never really said it was the connection technology, Its just that my first impression with 3g has been unfavorable, Damn I just sold my wing and i didnt even think of trying out the 3G on it to see if anything was better. Ohh and sadly when i do get edge Its great and alot more faster which is odd to say but to face the facts i can watch youtube videos with edge with no problem. Ill probley reflash it with official 1.5 and if i get the same results then is there a way to dumb down the browser to make it almost txt based without any image and uneeded script loading to atleast make browsing the web alittle more likeable.

Theoretically, EDGE maxes out at 192kbps and "standard" UMTS 3G at 384kbps. With HSDPA, the theoretical maximum is 7.2mbps, but most carriers don't support speeds such as this yet (T-Mobile UK supposedly at 4.5mbps).
So, if you are getting better performance over EDGE than you are over 3G, and assuming that T-Mobile uses the same backhaul network for both 3G and EDGE traffic, it seems more likely to me that you may have a problem device. I'd suggest a trip to a T-Mobile retail location may help, since they should be able to compare your experience with other devices.
Regards,
Dave
Well ill check out some nearby stores and see if they have working display models to try it out and cross refrence them to see if they compare the same. To get alittle off topic here so far i have had one problem with the device I played Retro defense from the market (Game BTW) and i played it for 2 hours straight. After 2 hours of gameplay that phone was hotter than hell which was kinda scarey and It just shut off blinking red on the notification LED so i figured the phone can actually overheat. I can reproduce this over and over only with that game. So if that hasnt happend to anyone then its a possibility that your assumption might be right that my device might have a defect. But its kind of a big crossover between overheating and connection difficulty.

[Q] Tmobile-UK Data speed

I've recently purchased the Atrix on Tmobile here in the UK.
I'm still running the stock rom (froyo 2.2.2) and have carried out some speed tests.
Download speeds max out at ~350kbs!
This seems incredibly disappointing as my Blade on the 3 network gets much faster speeds.
My question is:
If I unlock and update to a gingerbread based rom will my data access speed improve?
i.e Have tmobile in UK crippled data transfer speeds on the stock rom?
I would be grateful for any info.
Regards
Sam
I'm on T-Mo Uk on an Atrix too and that's decent speeds for 3G/HSDPA I've tried a few different rims and radio flashes but doesn't make much if any difference, so guessing T-Mo cap the data rate. When I first got the phone in May I was lucky if I got 100 kb/s. 3 or 4 phone calls later to T-mo and they realised I was setup on the wrong data tariff, so maybe worth checking that?
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Thanks Chaz,
I do think this is sim related rather than the network though.
My son is now using an old T-Mo G1. Ran the speed test on his phone which has a T-Mo PAYG sim in it. Results of 3 runs are:
Down Up
1541 402
1714 414
1533 344
Now this is 3-4 x faster than my contract sim I got with my Atrix (and still half the speed I'm getting on 3's network).
Why would the atrix be performing so much worse than the ageing G1?
Next I will test PAYG sim in the atrix.......

Hi Sam
You are not on HSDPA (despite what the phone might report). You are only connecting to T-Mobile's normal 3g network which runs at around 0.4Mbps... HSDPA will run at anything up to 3.6Mbps, though more realistically 1-2Mbps.
All Android handsets bought directly from T-Mobile should come with the ability to connect to the HSDPA network (though I am of course refering to the SIM card - all Atrixs in theory can connect to HSDPA). If you bought the handset through a third party company (such as dial-a-phone) then they may supply the handset with a "none Android" tarrif SIM card.
Read about it here on the T-Mob forums... you may be able to speak with T-Mob technical support to get the ability to connect to HSDPA. Good luck!
Thanks for the info surrealjam.
I bought this from the T-Mo website and it didn't mention capped internet speeds.
Interestingly my wife recently (this month) switched to a sim only contract after 2 years and speedtest on her T-Mo G2 is stuck at 357kbs. I remember when she first got the phone that it had a faster internet connection than our landline ~ 2.5Mbs.
Looks like they have tweaked her settings too.
I'm off to phone technical support. thanks again.
.......
Having phoned technical support on 150 they have enabled HSDPA for my internet access.
Job done, thanks again surrealjam.
I reckon you should give them a phone Chaz
Regards
Sam
No problem, Sam - I love a happy ending. There's no way to say that without sounding smutty these days... shame.

I think we had our wires crossed here I was giving speeds in kb/s and you gave kbps above ? lol
My speeds are around 1900kbps down and 400kbps up, which is around 400-450 kb/s (or 1.8-1.9mb).
As I mentioned before I was capped too and a few calls to T-Mo sorted it for me as well.
Glad you got it sorted out too

What's been your fastest LTE connection up to now?

As our phone has a new LTE modem, if your network infrastructure is sufficiently able, you may have noticed your mobile internet connection is a little quicker Let's see your best speeds. This was in North Tyneside, UK in the evening, nearly twice as fast as my 100 Mbps fibre optic connection

I managed to get the phone and 25 Gb / 4g max data for £42 a month. Very pleased. I've seen some people in Taiwan getting 300+ mbps, but nothing like that in Europe yet.
Didn´t buy the phone for it´s max LTE capacity but hoped for a better connetion quality, since my provider limits my download to max 55mbp/s.
At least i have 40Gb for 20€. a month
Hii.
I was able to get 240mbit download and 32mbit upload. Orange Poland
Br.
Piotr
I have over 150Mbps download speed and over 50Mbps upload speed in Shenzhen with China Unicom.
I hit 99 MB/s, running Metro PCS in New York City
291 down, 45 up Tele2 Estonia https://imgur.com/2CAnmfT
I can barely get more that 2 bars but within that 2 bars, its a rocket, 150Mbps. Can only imagine what a full house will deliver.
There are great proofs that this XPZ can go fast but what about the reception quality versus others smartphones (S8, 1+5,...).
Does the XPZ have a better signal reception?

Ah that's a little more interesting, reception quality is a bit shoddy imho, but if you geta HD signal, it's crystal clear, the problem is I can't work out how it sometimes works and other times doesn't, it can sometimes do a weird under water sound effect when not on HD.
Hi, on Optus 4G Band 3 (1800MHz) here in Australia, sometimes it goes down to 17ms which seems to be the fairly low ping
Locally I usually get around 100mbps, maybe a bit more on a good day.

I believe the other person has to have VoLTE working on their end for it to be a HD call. If they don't have it then neither end can use it.

If you happen to go to Sanremo then there TIM has best network and should see much faster speeds. Villa Ormond for example
I live pretty near Sanremo (i'm near Genova) so maybe i give it a try one day.
