I am on T-mobile USA. I use a UK HD2. Therefore, I do not have 3G frequencies. I am on Web2Go (unlimited Data), however, my speeds are limited to 2G edge. It's painfully slow.
Is data speeds a cause by Android or my carrier's speeds?
Can Web2Go be any faster if, say, I had a US HD2 (assuming t-mobile doesn't know I have a smartphone under Web2Go)??? What speeds will I be surfing the web? 3G 4G?

Your post confuses me, but I think this may be the answer you're looking for.
Edge (which is actually 2.5G) has a max download limit of about 25kB/s, that's a technical limitation and cannot be bypassed. Android has got nothing to do with this. You also can't softmod your phone to receive TMO's 3G frequencies, if you really want it you're gonna need a TMO supported HD2. 4G is out of question, but I've heard their 3G network is pretty damn quick. (Couple of megabits/sec download, should suffice methinks!)

But my question is if my HD2 was able to pick up 3G or 4G (hspa+), will my download speeds be limited to my phone's frequencies or limited to the data plan I have, which is the $9.99 Web2Go?
it is a hardware limitation. your UK hd2 does not support t-mobile's 3G bands. therefore, you will not get 3G speeds from t-mobile.

I have a T-MOUS branded HD2 with the $10 web2go plan, using internet2.voicestream.com APN. I cannot get T-Mob's HSPDA+ (4G) because it's hardware limitation, I believe only the G2 and Mytouch 4G are capable of HSPDA+ on T-Mobile.
My HD2 with Android gets HSPDA (3.5G) just fine. The speeds vary tremendously depending on my location. There's one particular spot in my town where I ran a several speedtests and consistently got 3.2 Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload. But for most locations, I get only around 1.2Mbps download and 1.4Mbps upload. And inside my house, where's mainly a deadzone for data, I only get Edge which is around 200Kbps download and 350Kbps upload.
My HD2 is the same way. I used to get 3Mbps, but one day I lost 3G for a day, the next day it came on and was slow. I would get 0.43Mbps on speed test. It would never go above 1Mbps, unless I go 3 blocks away from my home, I would get up to 5Mbps. Back at my house it would go back to 0.06Mbps-1Mbps. This has been happening for ever since OCT 26 2010.
From OCT 26 to now I have been using Tmobile Data as my ISP. Thought since they have a very fast network that can go up to 21Mbps and only at $25 I will go and get the USB PC stick, but from what has been happening I decided to remove the data plan from my phone because it was worthless and too slow to even watch videos. They have told me that their are issues in some states were you may not even get any data or voice. But its taking them too long to fix. I'm gonna wait about 2 months before I go back, hopefully they have the issue resolved.

Buying the G2 off contract, probably?
In all honesty, I think this 4G is way overrated. HSPA supports up to 14mbps, that's almost 2 megabytes per second. That's about the max speed I get with my broadband connection at home.
I can't even tell the difference between surfing on WiFi or 3G, because the browser is obviously the bottleneck which slows things down.

All of T-Mob's Android phones are locked by IMEI, so I don't think your data plan will not work. When you try to use data, it'll say you have to upgrade your data plan.

T-Mob G2 or MyTouch 4G. But when you get those phones, you have to upgrade your data plan. I don't think your $6 tzone will work with those phones.
this question may come across a bit noobish but I'm using the UK HD2 on Tmob UK and getting 3G speeds so I'm unable to understand what you mean by it's a hardware limitation of the HD2 UK to get 3G speeds. Unless Tmob US works differently?

just wondering, does anyone have a desire Z on orange UK? I was wondering if the phones are sent out with orange software etc rather than plain android operating system? I know the older phones orange used to brand them by not just the sticker but also their software...
Also are the phones normally simlocked?
One more thing - how has your experiance been in orange network? I have seen some complaints as to getting internet can be slow etc... Not sure if this is the right place to ask but would like to know...

Orange as a network are not too bad, and are getting slowly better again.
Their phones will be sim locked, and also while locked you won't be able to install any new radio firmware on your phone (they just won't work).
They have been known to use their own launcher lately, however sense will still be installed so you can swap to htc's stock launcher, not sure on what they are doing with the Z though.
I have an unbranded unlocked z and running on orange, the signal is fantastic.
I got mine from Mobiles.co.uk and all their handsets are supposed to be unlocked and unbranded. Mine is definately unbranded but haven't tested if it's unlocked.
Do Orange even sell the DZ ? I can see the DHD on their website, so I guess there's a good chance the DZ is following behind.
Remember that coverage can vary greatly, depending on where you are. See if you can borrow a phone from someone you know who has Orange, to test the signal out in your area. Or get a free pay-as-you-go SIM from Orange to test out the signal before you commit. Orange and T-Mobile are merging, so their coverage should improve through that.
Orange is terrible where I am and Vodafone is good, but if I moved somewhere else it could easily be the other way round.
Well Orange and T-Mobile have/are merging so they will have the best coverage in the country come March.

Well, if they both had dodgy coverage in a particular area, then with the merger they'll still have dodgy coverage there. So I'm not sure it's that simple ?

You'd be suprised. For example, in my house the Orange and T-Mobile signals are bad (had them before), but Vodafone is fine. Similarly a friend's house in a different part of the country has the same issue (Vodafone isn't that great there, but a lot better than the Orange/T-Mobile signals).

T mobile has good offers for the phone as well... but have read that when getting the phone from places like CPW, they cap the speed of data which has me concerned. Otherwise their 1GB allowance is definitely more attractive to try out.

I am currently on ORange in Dundee with a Pro2, data and voice been fine almost anywhere in the city (3G loses a bit when I'm in the middle of my house but it IS a new build so the attic is extra thick for insulation. However I noticed that when I set up the T-Mobile/Orange roaming a few weeks ago, it picks up a strong T-Mobile signal in the places it couldn't before. Now I have taken out a Desire Z via MobilePhonesDirect.co.uk on T-Mobile and I'm still using the Orange SIM in the Desire until my contract runs out come February and it's given me no problems. Simply roams to T-Mobile in several consistent blackspots... Once the T-Mobile 3G can be used on Orange it'll be even better!

Whats best with orange is fact that they joined with t_mob and now the coverage is even better, although 3G will only start after Xmas :S...
Otherwise, phone is brill, but Im still getting used to android (used to be winmo for past 3 years...)

Am currently on TMob and with the recent merge Tmob/orange you have the option to jump network when reception is crap, at the moment it's only 2g tho

To be honest I'm not sure, am on unlimited web n talk (internet) which works out to be 3gig for an extra fiver a month. I think with these types of phones you'd be better off with unlimited if you can get it

Well, I used to be on 500 for 18 months, and only once went over when my landline i-net was down due to BT. But now with the upgrade Ive gone for 1gig, and Im glad I did. This market thing is so much bigger than msofts winmo! Also, fone seems so much snappier with inet, utube,msn... I will deffo go over 500/month.
Just realized I havent installed skype yet...
Is 1gig gonna be enough...???

There's an app on market called NetCounter which shows your data usage, might be worth using that to help monitor data.
Im currently on Orange (contract now expired) and also looking to upgrade to a Desire Z with Orange (currently using HTC Touch HD).
I'm going to call Orange direct first and see what I can get. If they still don't do the Z then I might get it through Phones4U, on Orange, as they are offering the Z for free on a 24 month contract @ £25 pm which seems quite good.
Phones4U can also do upgrades so I have sent them a request to see if they can offer anything better than the £25 pm contract.
Just jumped from the N1 with an unlimited Android Data plan.I've been scratching my head ever since I purchased my off-contract phone, as to why I was getting ridiculously slow speedtest results (58 kb/s /38 kb/s with full green bars) avg. I'm not sure if everyone did what I did but I took the sim card out of my N1 and activated the phone w/ T-mobile by calling in the IMEI. Turns out my N1 data plan (according to the service rep) was for the 3g service and the NS apparently uses a newer 4g service.The rep made the change and told me it should go into effect in about 2 hours and I've just rec'd a text stating that my web plan has been changed. Going to wait to run the test a bit later tonight to see if I can pull in faster speeds with speedtest. If you aren't getting the speeds you think you should here in the US with optimal signal, a call to Tmobile to verify that you the correct. Going to activate the sim card that came with the phone just to be on the safe side too. Hope this helps anyone out there reading this
UPDATE! Man I feel stupid lol but that seems to have done the trick. Just pulled 1542 kbps/ 376kbps. Should I expect higher? Just looked at the Tmobile website and Android Mobile Web - Unlimited has been changed to 4G Web- Unlimited.

From what I understand, it can benefit from 4G to the extent the 3G network it would otherwise use is slower than what it is internally capable of handling, it just can't take full advantage because its hardware antenna is limited to a 7.2 mbps transfer rate.

Not entirely correct. While it doesn't boast full hspa its capable of higher than standard 3G speeds by using the 4g network. However unless using a custom rom you won't be able to see when it's on hspa.

My Nexus S can't seem to pull nearly that amount though. I need to pull out my N1 and test both in the same location to see if network performance has deteriorated in my area overall, or if the NS just isn't hauling the load properly.
Others have reported success in increasing data speeds with a call to T-Mo and changing to 4G account type in other threads here, so the theory is sound, assuming you're on an old account with some bad data plan. I clearly wasn't, based on my N1's performance, but the N1 was my first T-Mo phone/sim.
I had sort of the same issue. I was on a mytouch 3g data plan with my nexus s for 3 weeks and one day the data on my phone stopped working but I could still make calls. I called T-Mobile and the rep upgraded me to the 4g plan and its been working ever since.

I am both happy and sad to report that after some minimal testing, my Nexus S is getting the same download speeds as my Nexus One when using the same sim card in the same location off the same speedtest.net servers. I am getting around 2990Kb/s on both phones down, 2000 up. This is happy since it shows no hardware issues with the NS as I had originally thought.
It is sad because T-Mo used to serve up around 3800-4000Kb/s in this area. Not that in most real world uses, even tethering, that there's much difference.
the Nexus S just cant pull higher than 7.2 down HSPA+ is more about the backend
I have thought about making the call but I'm afraid that tmobile might make me switch to the "third party phone" plan for $30 when I pay $25 for unlimited data with my G1 plan. plus I would have to add a text plan and I would end up pay about $20 more than I do now.
I've been getting 3mb down since they upgraded my area and I'm on android unlimited web plan.
I just called T-mobile for the second time and asked to add the 4G web plan and the rep. told me that my device was not a 4G device and for that reason the 4G plan could not be added.
Is there really a difference between Android web and 4G web? or is it just name? I'm going to find out. Tomorrow I will borrow my brother's SIM card (from his G2), and do some speed tests.

Wtf? The most I've gotten was 3Mbps in Brooklyn.
I've done the whole diagnosis tweaking (release 6) and pretty much all of the other tweaks I've found in these very helpful threads.
But my download and upload speeds are atrocious. 80-150 kbs mostly. I ALWAYS have a 3g signal. I'm located in Boston and before this I had a Tilt2, which data speeds avg. 2000 - 3500 kbs.
Could it be my sim card? it is like 3-4 years old. Just a thought, because really i have no idea.
I am a novice when it comes to this type of tweaking. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The specs indicate that the Focus is only capable of HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA), not HSPA+.

But your Focus should still be able to match the speed of your Tilt2 which is HSPA as well (but with HSUPA disabled). The real world experience really depends where you are and how many AT&T customers are on the same tower as you. I routinely get about 100kbps speed (download) on my various 3G smart phones as well here in nation's capital.
On the other hand, a lot of ppl who bought the new '4G' HSPA+ AT&T phones (Inspire 4G and Atrix 4G) are also rarely ever get HSPA+ speed at all. Those so called 4G phones also comes with HSUPA disabled.
So, in the end, it is the same crappy AT&T network that limits your connection speed, really doesn't matter what phone you have. I'll be happy if I can reach the full 3G speed (2 to 3 mbps down, 1mbps up) in next few years. And refuse to play the AT&T '4G' game.
You should get a new sim card considering it is 3-4 years old that will affect connectivity to 3g and hspa network..
Boston network shouldn't be a problem.

I had the same problem when I had an old SIM card in my att fuze when trying to connect to 3g and hspa speed networks...rule of thumb is buy a new SIM when switching to a new phone....it also depends on what network your on...are you at&t?

Samsung Focus unlocked I get 3G+ in EU, if that helps. Seemed pretty fast, but I haven't done a speed test, though.
Usually I unlock my phone as soon as I get it home. With a bunch of unknowns with the Focus, I'm waiting it out right now before I do anything

I got 3G+ icoon with Rogers ROM, but not with AT&T ROM. And there's tool which can enable 3G+ icon, so I think it's just a registry issue.

I also get 3G+ with a Rogers sim card in my Focus, same card in the BB only 3G.
Is it possible to check whether this is just graphic, or there is a real difference in d/u speeds? I am using AT&T Focus in Europe.
You can check real speed with speediest.net to differentiate whether its gfx only or real network.

I'd love to hear what results you get if you test out the download/upload speeds. Like others have said you can use speedtest.net or there's a pretty good app called Bandwidth that I use.

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.

same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side

thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless
just did a speedtest 133kbps/down 94k up , ridiculous :'(

Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.
