Memory usage program - P3600 General

Is there a way to find out much memory each program installed is using ?
the memory program built in only show how much memory is used in total.

do you mean storage or application mem?

application

in the process tab it show what processes are running and their memory usage

Memory management...

At soft reset, I'm getting like 25mb program and 20mb storage memory, but the program memory start dropping drasitcly soon after. Is there anyway to manage the storage/program memory ratio like in WM2003SE?
After some normal use, my program memory drops to around 14mb and some apps (Skype) wouldn't start, meantime, I have 19mb of untouched storage sitting there doing nothing... I can't believe M$ removed the ability for the user to manage the memory usage, is there any registry trick that you can divide up the % of memory for program and storage?? Please help!!
p.s. I already have all my programs installed on the SD, and by normal use, I meant phone calls, SMS, calendar etc.. nothing major...

Reallocation of memory

I remember with my old Ipaq 4150 i could reassign memory from storage to programs. my current p3600i has a miserable 21mb of program space only, when everything else is all shut down. is there a way to reassign the many storage space i have to program use, with a 3rd party software or not?
since wm5 all storage is located in flash
and all normal memory is application memory
flash only got a limited number of writes before it dies
and writes ALOT! slower then application memory
but flash keep it's data even if all power is lost
there are programs to use application memory as a flashdisk for storage
but not the other way around
i would look into using less today items and today items which use less application memory
and possibly look in windows\startup for auto started programs which you dont need

boost memory?

is there a program, or a tweak that allows me to increase memory size, or manage memory from storage disk somehow? i need memory so my GPS igo8 can work properly
thanks
Nope, sorry but you only have a finite amount of ram. You can't steal any from the storage memory or from the memory card BUT you should be able to install IGO8 to the sd card... The maps are the biggest memory hogs though...
If you need ram then you need to see whats using it and shut that down with the taskmanager program. PLEASE NOTE - if you are using the stock rom then you may have heaps of carrier specific programs running that will eat up that precious ram...
Cheers...

Enhancing Program Memory

Hi All,
i am a new user to PDA phones. I was using the PointUI home freeware(similar to SPB Home). On turning on the Audio manager, i found the phone becoming slow. The free memory shown was 9.15 MB.I hence uninstalled the PointUI freeware and checked the program memory usage. Even while not any applications, call or msg these are the stats:
Prog Mem: 43.24 MB
In Use: 22.16 MB
Free: 21.08 MB
I would like to know why the In Use memory is taking 50% of the space while NOT running any applications!
and is there any way to enhance the program performance?!!
Apolagize if the question is wierd..just a lay mans' question...
The memory usage is because the OS needs itself to be loaded into memory before you can use the phone. Like in a computer, if you have 1 GB RAM installed, you will not get one GB free when the system boots up. This is applicable to phones as well, it doesn't matter whether its a smartphone/pda or not.
faster GENE!!!
NO guys...u cant make your gene faster by any method even after installing only 1 app!
the fact is when u reboot yr pda the free memory is around 21mb
but as you open applications some of them continue to run in d background.
so use a 3rd party app like 'advanced task manager 0.8' to kill unwanted processes.,.then u will get atleast 12mb free!!
lollll..................
Advanced Task Manager
Hi,
hey is the advenced task manager better than the one provided with the Phone???
If so .. how???? i mean you can see the running processes in the normal task manager too and delete them.....
If its better...then it would be great if you can paste the Download link for it

Point UI is a memory hog. it uses up huge memory. Try removing it, it should improve your system's memory usage dramatically. BTW usage of 22 mb is pretty ok.

Memory: Storage vs Program

Here's a problem I don't understand:
How are most ppl able to install so many things on their HD2 and not use up memory space?
So my HD2 has a total of 193.43MB of Storage and 457.01MB of Program.
When I install games and programs and apps, I install them on the device. This takes up "Storage" memory.
I guess, what is the difference? And how can I choose between where (On device or micro) to install each type of game, apps, program?
1) What uses Program memory? What uses Storage memory?
2) If I install a game on the microSD, and do a flash to a new ROM, will I have to re-install the game on the microSD again?
You should keep a basic strategy:
Whatever prog belongs to the operating system (like HTCSense-hacks, GUIs etc.) or should work without storage card:
Install it to the main memory
Whatever prog is not operating system critical (games, browsers, navi-software, apps, photos, videos etc.):
Install it on the SD-Card (the setup in 99% allows You to choose between main memory and Storage Card). It will eat up little by little Your RAM (by adding values in the registry, icons regs in the startup-menu), but this might centuries ´till RAM is full.
Move Cashes to SD-card as described in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
and try to keep main data memory above 50 MB.
Maybe installing progs to the SD-Card might make progs a litlle bit slower (not much though) but this way You can install hundreds of apps on Your HD2 (and never forget: before installing a new prog make a full backup of the main memory e.g. with SPB-Backup and if the new prog crashes Your device restore. Also for this it is ALWAYS better to install a new app to SD-Card instead main mem).

Program memory is RAM that is used by the operating system when executing programs.
Storage memory is where apps are installed and are then available through your icon links.
Calls are made from ROM to storage and then executed in RAM.
There are a number of issues to bear in mind when deciding where to install apps.
Installing to mem card results in slower operation of the app.
Installing to mem card results in higher power usage and therefore drains the battery quicker.
Installing to mem card can result in operating system freezes and overall slowdowns.
Installing to mem card will establish app links with the operating system that won't necessarily be usable if you flash other OS ROMs. Fresh reinstallation of apps should always be done after a flash of any new ROM anyway to keep things clean and running smoothly and reduce operational glitches to a minimum.
Any backup and restore software should only be used when restoring to the same
ROM and never across a ROM change. Sync all items you can before and resync afterwards.
Only install to mem card those apps that force you to or when you have run out of main storage and similarly have no choice.
If you know you are going to install masses of apps from the outset then as had been mentioned install operating system critical apps to main mem and the rest as you can using mem card last.
This is all good practice and good housekeeping.
Great Post !
Great thread !!!
I always wonder if Storage and program memory can be modified.
It was a long long long time ago, it was possible with my palm pilot...
Is there an application for monitoring RAM usage ?
I have about 190 Mo of free Ram and 39 Mo of free program memory.

There is no real reason to monitor any mem usage unless you operate in a memory hungry fashion. And that will only occur with the install of numerous apps. If you run out of storage mem then that's the time to do something about it and if that doesn't happen, then don't worry about it because your phone won't know the difference.
