I have not tried it yet, but I sure hope it works!
Mine just cycling from 'connecting' to 'available'. I even flashed back to wm5 from wm6. Same thing. Tried two routers (both 'g' routers though).
Here it is:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/...11g-support-in-htc-universal-pocket-pc-phone/
And the text incase it vanishes.
Enable Wireless G (802.11g) Support in HTC Universal Pocket PC Phone
HTC Universal also kwown as Qtek 9000, T-Mobile MDA Pro, Orange SPV M5000, O2 Xda Exec, i-mate JASJAR, Dopod 900, Vodafone v1640, Vodafone VPA IV, E-Plus PDA IV, Grundig GR980 and etc as it’s be re-branded and marketed by different vendors and network operators. One major disappointment and weakness of HTC Universal is it’s only support 802.11b-compatible technology, and thus unable to connec to WiFi G (802.11g) network.
It’s possible to make the HTC Universal based Pocket PC phone to compatible and able to connect to 802.11g-only access points by a registry tweak, but the speed would still be the same as 802.11b (11 Mbit/s).
The registry tweak is to change and add the following registry decimal values using a registry editing tool like the PHM Registry Editor at your HTC Universal based Pocket PC:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
After adding and editing above registry key, soft-reset the device.
This is very old.

Your right... and it doesnt work as well..
Wow. My old Dell axim 5 with a wifi cards connects to EVERYTHING... How come this can't?
I am really running out of idea's. I have searched this forum from top to bottom.
I have:
Re-flashed to wm5 (from the O2 site)
Tried every setting under the sun on TWO routers.
Tried with WEP, without it...
Hard reset, soft reset... ect .ect
I managed to CONNECT... I could ping and everything.. but I had to be less than one foot away from the antenna..
HOWEVER, it can pick up the SSID from as far away as the other side of the house (in the basement). This was about the limit of my Dell WIFI CF card too.
Some hope anyway...although it sounds hardwarish..
The book actually mentions an external antenna. Is that a typo? (look in the specs at the back)
I pulled my phone SIM card out and things seem a little more promising.... I tried many times with the phone connect icon in the connection manager turned off, but it's probably still keeping a connection somewhere....
Been through the whole gambit now. Searched this forum completely... tried different roms, tried registry hacks.... everything..
One thing people should be talking about on this forum: Ther e are quite a few people who flashed their pda's and ended up with this problem. Beware!
I guess I am now stuck looking for an SDCARD with some memory on it.
I upgraded my XDA EXEC to WM 6 by using CE Rom (2.02.00 WWE) to get luck for WiFi. I am not able to connect my university WiFi.
I am using Authentication - WPA, Data Encryption - TKIP, EAP Type - PEAP. XDA EXEC shows the WiFi available, but never get connected.
I observed many users of our university network, having windows mobile 5 / 6 based pocket pc, are able to use WiFi. But most of them have the IEEE 802.11b/g in their devices.
Please advise how we can get the settings done in XDA EXEC to get wifi.
Thanks a lot in advance.

According to the big Wizard thread on HoFo, the lack of BT as an option in Modem Link is MS design intent, but instructions for adding BT to Modem Link are in the i-mate document ‘Guidelines for using i-mate K-JAM as a Bluetooth Modem.PDF.
Does anyone have this doc, or does anyone know how to turn the K-Jam into a BT modem?
Thanks in advance...
Dox.
The document your talking about is here:
http://www.clubimate.com/support/KJ...r_using_i-mate_K-JAM_as_a_Bluetooth_Modem.pdf
but I haven't been able to get it working with my K-JAM and laptop using the MS Bluetooth stack. I keep getting the "error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem". I've followed all the setups successfully but cannot connect. I can even query the modem from the laptop ?! Help anyone ?
Doh! Thanks firas... I was expecting some reg hack to enable it in modem-link, but all the doc says is 'use the DUN profile in the MS BT stack... I should have guessed... :$
I tried it, paired the wizard with my iPAQ 4700, set it as the BT modem and bingo logged into Skype (as a test) from the 4700 with no problem. 4700 has no GPRS (and wifi turned off), old nokia has no SIM in, so it had to be through the wizard, but the 'G' icon didn't chage to the connected one even though the connection worked. I've yet to instal SPB GPRS monitor, but will do and see if it logs the traffic.
Can your laptop connect to a regular (Nokia/SE) BT phone's DUN profile?
Dox
Hey Dox, I've finally managed to establish an EDGE connection over bluetooth with my laptop. Just wanted to let you know regarding SPB GPRS Monitor to be careful with it. After I installed it my KJAM's backlight would always be off even after a restart. Only way I could fix it was to hard reset and reinstall everything except for that one. You might wanna check around to see how others have faired with it before installing it yourself.
SPB GPRS Monitor
Hi firas,
Glad you have it working buddy. I gave up on the BT dongle on my laptop (even with widcom drivers instead of the 3com supplied ones) long before I got the Wizards...
Thanks for the heads-up re gprs monitor too. As it happens, I had already installed it on my own Wizard as my Voda 'data' bundle covers gprs,MMS and SMS from the same pool, and I wanted to see how many 'SMS' worth of data I was using. I haven't had the backlight problem you mentioned, but will be wary.
When I installed it from the O2 companion CD, it installed okay, but (I guess because of the Active rubbish) there's no Today plugin with that version. I turn the titlebar icon off, as its implementation is clumsy, and used the today plugin to monitor, and as access to the reports. Might try an SPB update over the top...
Anyway, reconnected from my 4700 surfed for a bit fine, and still no sign of the Today 'G' icon showing connected and no traffic in GPRS Monitor. Guess it's back to my old registered version on the iPaq end of the link...
Thanys again for the tips and warnings firas...
Catcha later
Dox
Glad to be of any help Dox. I've also had the same problem with the G icon not changing colors to show that it's connected when using the GPRS (EDGE) connection on the KJAM from my laptop (although I can surf the Internet just fine). So I guess we can just add that to the ever growing list of bugs in the KJAM (or WM5) :x
Hi Firas, I want to ask you. Is your service provider MTC or Wataniya? and what about the downloading speed using dun profile is it slow or fast?
Hi ysq2002. I'm currently using Wataniya and I'm getting download speeds between 128 - 170 Kbps ( 16 - 21 KBps) using DUN on my KJAM which is great for Kuwait. I've tested it in Kuwait City, Surra (not south Surra), Sulaibikhat (Maternity Hospital) and even Kabd (Chabd) and have gotten the above mentioned speeds. I used to have MTC for several years and I tested my MTC phone line beside my Wataniya phone line recently in Chabd and was only getting 20 - 32 Kbps ( 2.5 KBps - 4 KBps ) on my MTC phone !!
Yes firas.Yesterday, I bought kjam. The internet speed was very good using Edge. Much, much better than PDA2k which has no support for edge

Hi Firas, could you please tell me how did you make the KJAM bluetooth to work as a modem and the laptop can connect to it?when i tried to dial from my lapotp,i got error 692 hardware error, can you help?thanks a million.
anyone can help?
To be honest with you I don't know what I did differently that finally got it working. I followed the instructions in the above mentioned PDF at least 10 times and it finally worked ?! Try going to device manager on your computer, uninstall any Bluetooth Modems. Go to the Bluetooth settings and remove any pairing between your laptop and your phone and start all over again. Take it step by step according to Club Imate's document.
Sorry I can't be of anymore help.
EDGE !!
His Firas;
I've read some threads about EDGE in the forums; but i swear i can't get an exact and easy-to-understand meaning of EDGE !!! all what i got is that it's 3 or 4 times faster than GPRS connection !! what is EDGE, plz don't give me high-tech definition ?? and tell me, if you connect to the internet on your wizard using EDGE, how do you know the exact speed (considering that the laptop doesn't exist) ?? thanx in advance buddy ..
EDGE is also known as EGPRS (Enhanced GPRS) and can theoritically reach speeds of 384 kbit/s. It is an upgrade to current GPRS networks and is much faster than regular GPRS which operates at 30–70 kbit/s. So if your mobile telephone company provides EDGE (EGPRS) and your phone supports EDGE it will run at EDGE speeds (usually up to 230 Kbps). If your phone only supports GPRS it will still work with an EGPRS network but will run at a slower speed (usually around 40 - 50 kbps). EDGE is available in some parts of the US, Europe, and Middle East (not sure about Asia). Do not confuse it with UMTS which is a very different technology and is built on different networks and offers even faster speeds.
Here are a few web sites that offer free speed tests:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
well, thank you so much, i got the clear idea now and thanx again for the websites
7ayyaak Allaah Glad I could help !
Hi, I just bought a MDA Vario and downloaded the software to sim-unlock it. I've been using it on Vodafone for a few days and have some problems:
Wi-Fi:
I can turn wireless on, but when I then go to IE to start surfing, it tries to connect using GPRS instead of Wi-Fi. How do I get it to use Wi-Fi instead?
Bluetooth:
I can Sync my device to my PC using Active Sync 4.1 over USB, but when trying to do this over bluetooth, I keep getting told that the device can't find a an existing Bluetooth partnership, even though I've set one up (several times)! What could I be doing wrong?
ROMS:
I've got the T-Mobile ROM on my phone, but I'd rather have a standard (non-network specific) ROM. Where can I download such a ROM? Would ther ebe any issues in overwriting the T-Mobile ROM with a Standard one? Which ROM is the "best"?

If WiFi is on and connected successfully to the network, it should use WiFi. I sometimes find if I wander about, and the phone loses site of my Access Point without me noticing, the next time I request a webpage it will fire up GPRS. You say you're connected, but it sounds like the Vario doesn't think so. Are you sure you've got WEP/WPA keys correct, and that the Wireless AP isn't using MAC filtering? Have you been able to get onto the net with IE at all, or has it always tried to get out over GPRS instead?

When you pair the Vario with the PC, both ends will offer a list of Bluetooth profiles they support. When I tried with my laptop and a 3com BT dongle, despite it working fine with my old iPAQ, the Wizard didn't seem to think that the laptop offered the ActiveSync service (or maybe the laptop didn't think the phone did, I can't remember for sure). You need to make sure that the Vario (if that's the "device" that's complaining) believes the PC is offering ActiveSync as a Bluetooth service, or it will assume it's only paired with other phones, GPS's, headsets etc, but nothing with which it could activesync.

The ftp site here hosts a load of ROM's. I don't know of any that are noticeably better all around than any others. I have a Qtek phone, and although the later ROM fixes the BT voice-dial wake-up problem it also breaks, MMS and some bits of WiFi for some people. Others have installed the WWE version of a ROM and found that the keyboard doesn't match their hardware layout and some keys are wrong. They've then gone and broken button mappings trying to fix the keyboard problem. I know T-Mobile are the least subtle in their customisation, and many people seem to want to get rid of the pink look. I don't believe there is a clear winner in the ROM stakes. I've seen a few sigs that suggest people are starting to cook their own ROM with the GSM stack from one, the WiFi from another or whatever combination suits them. If you're up for doing the same, be my guest, but you may, unless you're experienced, find yourself worse off than you are now.
Have a look over in the "upgrading" forum and see what people seem to be using there. Be aware though, a lot of the "old timers" will be using I-Mate or Qtek devices which hit the streets before the O2 and T-Mobile variants, so they have had less device specific customisation done and were probabaly running a generic WWE (or localised) version anyway.
Hope that helps?
Dox.
Hello, downloaded many great ROMS from the site and have just 1 ickle issue with WM6
Have a Artemis (MDA Compact III) and a Elf (MDA Touch) both running Windows mobile 6. My artmeis is using tomtom and unable to get live updates / traffic reports as the simcard slot is buggered so no GPRS connection. So Idea was too use my Elf to share the connection via GPRS using BT but no luck. Tried the BT DUN cab which did show DUN as a service on my Artemis. Added a new network connection setting, dial up as *99# but nothing is happening when launching a webpage - shows dialing *99# but connection keeps failing.
Hope someone can help
At the risk of sounding silly, the o2 orbit has a 2 year warranty, would it be possible just to get it replaced in an o2 store? (I don't think they've been out 2 years yet?)
handset not faulty ...this is due to the device no longer providing D.U.N as a service due to it being WM6 - basically I need to share my internet connection from 1 PDA to another
doesn't DUN require an active sim card to work tho?
saying that, i just had a quick look and i can make a new connection and select bluetooth as the modem type, unfourtantly i don't have another pda to try, but if its paired with another device would you be able to use the modem on the other device? or is that what you've been trying to do?
I only suggested the warranty as you mentioned the sim card slot was buggered, didn't mean to sound sarcastic! also was about to suggest wifi as an option but then realised that mda compact doesn't have wifi ...
Have you tried this ? I use it to access the web with a WM2003SE device to a WM6 device via bluetooth. I tried all of the other suggested methods/hacks and this is the only thing that works for me.
Hrmm i've been trying to play a multiplayer game via bluetooth with wm6 and found it impossible, is it possible to create a serial connection between to wm6 phones?
not sure if its a simular problem, just reading thru that thread now thanks
Problem is simple - have 2 wm6 devices, MDA Compact III has GPS which I use for TOMTOM but use my simcard in the touch as my phone (prefer to use it for making calls etc), Dont want to keep swapping my sim just to get traffic updates ...
Hi,
I have got this Dopod C730 phone from M1. After using it, I notice that for certain Wifi connections, it cannot seems to get connected, eg [email protected] located at Jurong Point Mac and Amway Building, any my office wireless network and some other [email protected] But I have no problem connecting to my home wireless and some other Mac/KFC [email protected]
I do get full signal strength for those wifi which cannot be connect, but however, when I try to connect, it will either shows connected for few seconds (but cannot surf) then die off, or cannot be connected. After which when I try again, my phone cannot detect any wifi signal anymore, even for those which can be connected also disappeared! I will need to soft reset my phone to get back the signal.
I have even tried to do a hard-reset (reset to factory setting) under Setting -> Clear Storage, but it doesn't help. The same problem remains. My colleages have Windows Mobile 2005 and Pocket PC 2003 and they have no problem connecting to these Wifi. So I am quite sure is the phone problem.
Have anyone encountered this problem before? Any solution to this as it is really a hassle as when you need wifi connection, you do not know which [email protected] can or cannot get connected.
I have sent it for repair at SIS (Dopod Distributor) but after a week, I did not get any response from them. When I finally called them, they said no problem with the phone. Really a waste of time. Since made several emails to them but they don't seem to response promptly. I have even made an effort to record the problem own on video, sent to them, then they again never response.
Therefore I need those with Dopod C730 to go around to test the [email protected] and if you have this problem, do let me know and we can sent them up for compensation together. If you have any solution, do also let me know.

I have got the same problem connecting my JasJam (Dopod 838Pro) to my Draytek 2820Vn router at home. It detects the available network, looks as if it connects, then drops out. Eventually the access point shows up as "unavailable".
I could connect easily to my old Billion 7402VGO router, which used the same transmission channel (11). Other desktops, notebooks and my son's HP iPaq on PPC2003 connect fine.
Problem seems to be something in WM6 that disagrees with some routers, seemingly the more industrial-strength ones. I have referred the issue to Draytek, but as yet have received no illuminating response.
Not sure what OS your Dopod is running on, but if it's a WM6 variant, it's likely to a similar problem.
I cannot offer a solution only to say that I have similar problems. Connecting to my providers 3G service and to my home wireless router can be a bit problematic but even when connected and I try to find a web page the service will disconnect after a time showing a blank web page with 0bytes downloaded. I am using a Dopod 838 Pro bought in Hong Kong and using in the UK. I am thinking about upgrading from Windows Mobile 6 to 6.1 in the hope that may provide a solution.
Two phones--HP IPAQ 910 (runs WM 6.1 Professional), and a Sony Ericsson TM506 (dumbphone). I could use either, with my T-Mobile (USA) SIM card. However, although the IPAQ has 3G, that will not work on T-Mobile, which uses a different band for 3G.
The TM506 works very well as a 3G modem for my laptops, giving me a fast Internet connection on the go, when there is no available wi-fi connection. It also works well as a phone. Of course, it has much elss PDA capability than the IPAQ, much worse keyboard for text input (just a normal phone keypad), and much smaller screen.
Therefore, two phones, one SIM card, the following looks like the best solution to me--leave the SIM in the TM506, and use that as a phone. (If the battery runs out, the IPAQ could be used as a backup phone.) Also use the TM506 as a 3G modem, both for laptops, and for the IPAQ.
Use the IPAQ as a PDA, and as a small internet device, connected via wi-fi or tethered through the Tm506.
The problem is--although tethering from a laptop to the TM506 works fine, I cannot get the IPAQ to tether through it. I set up the BT pairing, I choose the DUN service, I successfully set up a connection in the Connections tab, routed through the BT modem (TM506), using the same settings as on the laptop. Everything looks like it is set up correctly.
However, when I try to connect through that connection, I always get an error message very quickly, about "cannot connect for unknown reason".
I've tried so many things, over days now, and cannot get it to work. I've scoured the Internet looking for info, and found nothing that works for me.
Does anyone here have any suggestions? Has anyone here tethered with an IPAQ 910, or at least a WM 6.1 PPC, through a different phone? (I do not mean using the IPAQ or other WM 6.1 phone as a modem for a laptop--but the opposite--connecting to the Internet on the IPAQ 910 or other WM 6.1 phone, by BT tethering through another phone.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
I tried today to tether an old PPC I have, the T-Mobile (USA) MDA (HTC Wizard, stock T-Mo AKU2 ROM, WM5) through the TM506, and it worked!
So, the problem is definitely not with the TM506, which works for tethering a laptop, and for tethering the Wizard.
The question is then--why won't the IPAQ 910 tether through it? It has all the right settings to tether (DUN) through another device, but it doesn't work. I'm wondering if I have a defective unit, or whether it is a problem with the whole model, or even of WM 6.1.
Has anyone here successfully tethered a WM 6.1 phone through another phone? Has anyone done so using an IPAQ 910?
Anyone here curious to try, and see if it works with your phone?
Could it be a problem with the Bluetooth stack? Do all WM 6.1 phones now have the MS stack, or do some have Widcomm? If there is a problem with outgoing BT DUN on the MS stack, is it possible to install the Widcomm stack? Or would that create other BT problems?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I looked at the BT specs, from systeminfo, on the 910. This doesn't mean anything to me, but I'll post it here, in case it means something to someone:
-----------------------------------------------
Firmware Version A05U
Hardware Revision: BlueCore4ROM
Driver Version: BCHS_WINCE_MOBILE_4_7_3
Software Version: BCHS_WINCE_MOBILE_4_7_3
-------------------------------------------------
Does that mean anything to anyone reading?
Interesting--no mention of Microsoft or Broadcomm-Widcomm in any of that. (Unless the BC at the beginning of driver and software version stands for Broadcom).
I still have not found anything in Internet searches. Although I am not very knowledgeable about the WM registry, I decided to look a little there, and see if I find anything.
I see a registry key, that to me seems like it would govern outbound BT DUN from the phone:
HKLM\EXTModems\bluetooth_dun\
(Being that this is under external modems, I assume this key has to do with the outbound DUN I was discussing-dialing with the PPC to the internet, through another phone.)
Underneath it there are three values:
string value: FriendlyName=Bluetooth
string value: port=COM5
Dword: DeviceType=7
I am wondering whether--perhaps altering the second or third value, could get this to work?
Anyone know what the third one means-DeviceType=7?
With the second value, could it perhaps not be working, in that that is the incorrect com port? How would I find out what is the correct com port for this?
IN setting up the pairing between the IPAQ 910 and the SE TM506 (initiated from the IPAQ), in the choice of services, besides the dial-up-networking service, I believe there was the serial port profile, where one could set up a particular com port. There was no mention of that being necessary for setting up DUN, so I just chose the latter. However, should I re-pair, and also choose the serial port profile, and set up a com5?
Any other ideas?
Thank you.
Edit--I forgot to mention, under ExtModems, besides the key bluetooth_dun, there is also a key called bluetooth_dcn. What in the world is bt dcn?
I came upon a post on Modaco from 2005, regarding tethering a WM phone through another phone, at:
http://www.modaco.com/content/blue-angel-blueangel-modaco-com/202751/bluetooth-dun-profile/
I think much of it is not applicable to my situation, as two very different phones, different version of WM, etc.
However, I found the following quote from it interesting:
---------------
"BTW - You can't go into Settings...Connections to set up your connection. For some reason it doesn't work. Don't ask me why. I have to use the Bluetooth Manager to connect."
---------------
Well, as described, it also doesn't work for me to connect, through Settings-Connections-Connections. However, on my IPAQ 910, WM6.1, there is no other way to connect.
The author of the post quoted above says he can connect through "Bluetooth Manager". Well, I have no applet, either in Programs or Settings, called "Bluetooth Manager". There are of course Bluetooth settings, under Settings, Connections-Bluetooth. One can set up the pairing there, but there is no way to initiate a connection from there. One has to go into the Connections-Settings-Settings screen to set up the actual connection, and try to connect. I still cannot get that to work. (And now I have tried adding a BT serial port with the same com number as the registry key, as described above. Still did not work.)
I'm wondering--if there is some way I could get the app "Bluetooth Manager", would it install and work on my IPAQ 910? Where could I get that applet? Or is that app for the other BT stack?
3G modem with TM506
No answers about connecting the ipaq with the tm506 but I was curious as to how you used the tm506 as a 3G modem? I can connect with my laptop using the GPRS network but not the 3G. I downloaded the PC software from ericsson website and everything loaded and functions smoothly but it will not connect to the 3G network. The software setup a modem connection that dials *99***5# and a long unknown password entry. Any idea of how to get this to work?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have not looked here for a while.
I found it to work also using that SE software. That sets up the connections on the computer, so they can also be used without the SE software running.
Nothing special necessary to use 3G. But of course, T-Mo 3G is not spread throughout the country. Of course if you do not get a T-Mo 3g signal where you live, you cannot tether 3G. Do you get a 3G signal with the phone by itself?
