I have searched and searched and still cannot figure out where & what to edit in the WM5 registry on my Cingular 8125 to allow me to manually select networks and edit the preferred networks list.
These items are blocked out on Cingular phones. I'm sure this can be brought back with registry hacks, but I've yet to find them
For those of us who do not want to update the complete ROM to an unsupported and/or problematic build - please help!!
The problem is that the near-by ATT tower gives me a full signal on my MPX200, the Cingular tower gives me 0 to 1 bar!
My new 8125 will only let me access the Cingular tower (with only 0 to 1 bar!) I need to be able to hop on the ATT tower manually, and set it as my preferred network.
Thanks for any help in advance. I've spent hours upon hours reading here, so I know you guys know your stuff! Come on, Come on...
did you load the extended rom on your 8125?
if not, there is an "enable eons" cab file that you may want to run. it won't allow manual network selection, but it should log you on to whatever tower is strongest...
how can i do that on my Tmobile MDA?
I'm also having a problem with reception issues, I called Cing and the tech support told me that my 8125 was setup to be ATT preferred even though my strongest and closest tower was Cing.
The lady said she switched me to Cing preferred and that I should notice a change in ~24 hrs, I guess I'll find out in another 13 hrs.

Where is the extended rom? Is that all the Cingular stuff that installed on the first boot? If so, then yes, it's loaded.
Where can in find the enable eons cab you're talking about?
EDIT: I found what you are talking about, in FTP. I need to find detailed descriptions of these before I install them. Might be a work around, but still not exactly what we all need to get our WM5 back to normal. Thanks though.
I really wish someone could find the reg edits needed to bring these options back!
Anyone???

I'm not so sure that CAB file is our friend. I'm running the latest AKU 2.2 ROM (2.25) without any Cingular files installed and man do I get much better reception. Used to be that I'd drop calls twice (at least between office & home) but not a problem since I stopped loading those Cing CABs!

So, do you have the options to set up your preferred networks? And manually choose which network to connect to?
Start > Settings > Phone > Options > Network tab
???
And how stable is that 2.25 ROM? Which product exactly was it meant for?
Thanks a bunch
Well I just upgraded to Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU22_Basic.exe and still have the same problem!
I went ahead and let the customizations install. It's gotta be one of those cabs that removing the manual network selection and preferred networks options!
This sucks because I want everything EXCEPT the one that's causing this. If I stop the customization process by soft-resetting right before it starts, is there a way to install the cabs one at a time??? Where are they actually stored on the device, I cant seem to find them.
Thanks in advance...
Ok, for an update...
I re-flashed to Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU22_Basic.exe and this time I did not let the customizations run. I did a soft-reset at the 3sec prompt.
Phone booted up, everything looks OEM, nothing Cingular at all. However... I STILL DO NOT have the options I'm looking for in Start > Settings > Phone > Network tab
There is supposed to be an option in WM5 to change between manual and automatic network selection, and a preferred networks list editor...
This is ridiculous! Is there maybe a block built into the SIM? How can I edit the SIM then? I NEED to remove this crap that Cingular's built in. Not letting us select networks and manage our preferred list is BS!
I really cannot believe there is no fix/hack out here yet for this... Help some one please!!
What SIM card do you have?
The solution may be worked around in the software but all Cingular 64k SIMS block setting preferred networks.
Cingular lately has been working to put a stop to excessive off network useage...hence the EONS file but that still is set by the SIM to save the preference.
Im sure someone with skills can write an app to load at startup that can do the same functions but at stock it's not possible.
I just confirmed that!! Damn SIM cards.
I was able to dig out my old ATT sim card and ALL the settings I was looking for were there!
Some one PLEASE come up with a way to either edit Cingular SIMs not to do this, or block them from doing it... please!
Check your PM, may be able to help you a bit
Thanks Decepticon, a possible work around. However, I really would like to put everyone to the test and fix this by blocking Cingulars SIM or registry entries from disabling network selection and preferred networks.
Here is an update every one:
Developers, listen up, shine for us on this one please
HKLM\Security\Phone\
L: 0
ManualDisable: 1
PreferredDisable: 1
I changed the two 1's to 0's and bam! I have the settings under Start > Settings > Phone > Network tab
I can view all networks, set to manual, look at preferred list, etc etc
BUT... when clicking OK, get an error "Unable to save settings on network, try again". So no settings stick
Also, after a softboot (properly waiting for registry to save) the above settings go back to 1's.
This has got to be something in the SIM, a program in Startup, or a registry setting that keeps changing these settings back upon boot. Because they are not programmed out, just blocked at boot.
Here is what I have listed in Startup:
CapNotify
custTDYTSK
Init_Tray
Magic_Button
poutlook
sddaemon
WiFiInit
Any of them suspicious?
Let's bang this out folks...
Can someone attempt to view Cingulars SIM contents and block whatever changes these registry values?
Anyhow, just some more info for ya'll

That's when it attempts to save the preferences to the SIM.
Unfortunately editing the registry wont be able to get this accompolished but I do hope someone can write a program that saves the preferences on the phone and use it to override the SIM upon tower selection.
Settings don't stay with a non-Cingular SIM after reboot
I used a foreign SIM on my Cingular 8125 and after registry was changed and soft reset it defaulted to origninal Cingular settings. Truley SAD! Any other ideas about registies that could make the Manual Network selection become available for use permanently? Got to be something else. How about posting the registy values from other HTC's (non-Cingular) or Cingular with that activated feature to perceive the difference.
You keep referring to:
Start > Settings > Phone > etc.
On my 8125, when I go to Start > Settings the only tabs I have to choose from are Personal, System, and Connections. Where is this Phone tab you keep mentioning?
BTW, I am running the Dopod 2.21 WWE rom on my Cingular 8125. I do have manual network selection available in the Phone control panel settings.

It's not a tab. It's an icon in there. Click on it to open the phone settings. Then go to the "Network" tab at the bottom. You'll see a screen that just tells you what Network it's on, and one button called "Find Network".
Cingular's SIM card blocks the other buttons that let you manually select which networks to connect to, and lets you save your preferred network list.

So do you have those options WITH a Cingular SIM card in the phone?? Or are you using a different carriers SIM???
Common CONFUSION about SIM and FIRMWARE
Folks, the manual selection of the network is simply blocked in certain versions of ROM. Cingular in particular and on purpose has started doing that especially in the late versions of so-called HTC/Cingular ROM editions. Everything is about money now. So depending on SIM card (straight 64K or 3g 64k) your phone has more or less tendency to stick to this preferred CINGULAR network. However your ability to choose network manually solely depends on the ROM of your PDA/phone. I personally like Dopod 838 Rom 2.21 etc which works a whole lot better in all aspects. Trust my experience. AND you DO HAVE this ABILITY to manully select a provider. One more thing! Using a simple 64k SIM card on CINGULAR ROMS gives you FAR BETTER RECEPTION AND CLARITY than on 3g SIM card.
Has anyone found a way to get the carrier name in the today screen?
There is a registry hack somewhere which shows the state of the radio and the carrier name, do a search.
I found how to do it...anyone interested here are the instructions...
Customize operator's name
To show specified operator name set
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting\ONSDisplayRule=0 (DWORD decimal)
And then at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RIL\Operator Names
add the code and the name to display. The value is 5 digits "CCCOO", where CCC is 3-digits country code, and OO is 2-digits operator's code. For example:
"25099"="BEE LINE"
For country and network code, go to wikipidea for mobile country code and network code
To show operator name based on the SIM card used (eg for cases where dual SIM adapter are used), set
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting\ONSDisplayRule=1 (DWORD decimal)
For my dual-SIM adaptor, when I switch between SIMs, the phone with default settings showed always one and the same name, until I reboot the device. Then, it was not able to retrieve operator's name from one of the SIM cards I use. Probably it is an adaptor fault. But anyway, after I changed ONSDisplayRule to 0 and set more up-to-date names for operators that I use, I now always see the name of the operator of the chosen SIM.
Change the "Message Sent" and other general notification bleep
This will change the sound of other pop-up messages as well as SMS sent bleep. The default sound is the `msgbox.wav` in the \Windows directory. To change it, go to
HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\Default
And change to the names of other wav files in your \Windows directory without the `.wav` extension.
AKU2 ROMs tweaks
These are tweaks that have been confirmed to work on AKU2 ROMs, and confirmed not to work on earlier ROMs
Show Wireless Today item
By just adding following keys to the registry will get you a nice 'wireless' today item that show Network name/status, WiFi name/status as well as Bluetooth status. Confirmed to work on AKU2 ROMs
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Wireless"]
"DLL"="netui.dll"
"Order"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"Type"=dword:00000004
Temporary?
Hi,
Thanks for the tip. I did the change and it worked. I could see the carrier name on my today screen. But after I soft-reset PPC, I see the carrier number 'xxxxx' instead of the name.
Am I missing something?
Please help.
~Squid
Edit- This is strange, but the tweak seems to be working for now, even after a couple of soft-resets. Will test further and keep posted. Thanks
easy way a program call OpMon by mortscript
Batterystatus can also display carrier name
While On Roaming
Will the text change when i am on Roaming...
Or is there any plugin to show the current location(area info) that is broadcasted by the mobile towers
On my HTC HD2 i have wm6.5 prof installed. The problem is following:
everything was ok with my old sim card, but when i changed it to the new the double operator name was displayed on home screen and in phone menu, like MTS UKR MTS UKR (it's in Ukraine).
As i suppose the first op. name is recieved from tower and the other one is from the sim card. The main problem - is how to disable this stored sim name via win registry???
I've searched a lot of forums and references and tried a lot, but unfortunately none of that helped me.
For ex. i know about key 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Ril\OperatorNames' and if create here a new string type like "25501"(this is for ukraine) with "Some Text" value you can change op name, but in my case it's will be like "Some Text MTS UKR". Second part of op. name stays unchanged.
Also at microsoft win mobile reference, i found such info like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Cellular\CellTSP
DisableCPHSOverride ( By default, the CPHS operator name (the operator name stored in the SIM) overrides all other stored operator names when the user is registered on the Home PLMN (Public Land Mobile Network) and EONS is not enabled. In that case, the CPHS name is displayed as the operator name. )
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Cellular\RIL
EONSEnabled ( When set to 1, specifies that EONS (Enhanced Operator Name String) is available. When set to 0 or not present, EONS is not used. The operator name is then set using the CPHS override, unless the override has been explicitly disabled.)
After playing with this settings nothing changed, DisableCPHSOverride didn't influenced on anything, EONSEnabled key i had no at all, but even if create it and set to 0 or 1 nothing changes too. Changing settings in folder EONS.cache ( \HKLM\Comm\Cellular\RIL\EONS .cache ) is not solving the problem because it's recreated every time phone connects to network, it's just a cache.
Actually i have no idea now how to disable this op. name stored on sim, can anyone help me, is here someone with the level of God?))
p.s. beg your pardon for may be bad english.
Hi,
I recieved a rogers samsung focus today.
Inserted my bell sim card, and booted. was asked for a code, i entered an unlock code i got and it was accepted.
I can send and receieve calls and text msgs, however i can not get an data on the phone, via web browser, live hotmail, or xbox app.
I accessed the diag app via ##634#, however when i try enter the root menu (*#197328640#) nothing happens
I suspect the issue is the network profile is not set to auto, and rogers manuelly configured the phone with there xml profile.
with the LG wp7 device i was using yesterday i could "SET ADC" :enable" or "set network profile", via the ##634# menu => factory menu => engineer menu => other settings
anyone have any suggestions?
apn
in settings add bells apn and it should work fine, stay out of the diagnostic menu, there shouldn't be anything there to change, I can't remeber where in settings it is but there is a spot to add an apn,
WOW that was pretty easy.
APN location: settings/cellular/add APN
Bell lists the info on their site, for reference the APN settings are;
APN: pda.bell.ca
Proxy server: web.wireless.bell.ca
Port: 80
I've added the APN to the focus and browsing and xbox live work, i wonder if adding the proxy server would make things faster/better signal? and if so, how?
On another note, when i renegotiated my plan last week MMS was added, and i was using it on my LG WP7 Device. How do i change the MMS setting on the focus?
From bell's site;
Enter the following in the Message Centre/MMS gateway field:
MMSC URL: htp://mms.bell.ca/mms/wapenc
I'm on Bell and thinking about getting a focus as well.
How is it? Is everything working correctly?
How do you go about getting an unlock code?
1. Go to the phone app
2. Dial ##634# and click Send
3. When prompted for a password type 277634#*#
4. You should now be at "Factory Menu"
5. Choose "Engineer Menu"
6. Choose "Other Setting"
7. Verify that "Set ADC" is set to Enable
8. From the "Other Setting" page, choose "Set network profile"
9. You should now be on the "Set network profile" page and in the bottom half of the window you should see a list of *.xml files. These appear to be the network configuration files.
10. Look at the filenames for the config files and take your best guess at which one to choose for your provider. I'm on AT&T and I fixed the MMS problem by choosing "_PROV_ATT_US_310_410.xml"
After you choose that *.xml profile, your MMS should be working."
The changes they are making are the ones to change the MMS capability as this can be carrier locked – outside of the phone lock/unlock status.

I got my unlock code through a local cellphone shop (gave him the IMBI #), downtown london(ont), not sure where he got it from, seems to have worked.
I can call and recieve text msgs but data is a bit of an issue.
You have to add APN for bell (proxy server would make things speed up unboudtably but no field for it).
It almost feel like you have to push or send a signal for data to turn on / start. usually the first time i try a webpage or bing search it doesn't work, get error " no network or wi-fi"
in terms of phone i like it better then LG optimum bell offers (had it for a week). didn't like the slide out keyboard, typing # was a pain (virtual keyboard pretty got and auto correct awesome). Also, larger screen and significantly lighter. Colours are more vivid as well, green is green not some yellow derivative.
be warned though, many many things that are lacking, january update will be interesting.
*****just tried sending picture txt no luck.....******
------- hopefully someone will figure out how to access the focus profile xml
on a side note:
after many many speedtests in London, Ont, and Hamilton,Ont; DL speed on bell caped at 3 mbps. (tests were on both LG optimum and SAMSUNG Focus)
I suspect that the $10 fee, Bell will be introducing in the next few weeks shale be to increase speed beyond this.

No dice - 277634#*# does nothing at the diagnostics menu. It just sits there looking at me. Are you sure this is the correct code?
the 277634#*# is for the LG MGF "app" you get installed when you dial ##634# on an LG WP7 phone it doesn't work on a samsung device. It doesn't work on mine, and i have yet to see anyne state that it works on theres.
The closest thing is a "app" that gets installed when you dial ##634# called "diag"
try entering in the diag program (found either by app menu or dialing ##634# again):
*#197328640#
and see if it works or just sits there and stares
Yeah still my biggest problem is MMS settings in the phone. Does anyone get a 3G+ symbol on the signal menu? Trying to understand why it doesnt say if HSPA is connected or not...

Yeah I get it all the time when downloading dada, wether its in the market place, emails or netflix...!
as for the data. I was having trouble too, then went into Settings>cellular>add APN>
and I noticed that when I was searching for a network there, it was coming up scan unsuccessful. So I deleted my APN, and scanned again, found the right network, which for me was EINSTEIN HOME, (IN WIS USA) and added internet.air.net with no password or username and now apparently Im on the data network.
Great! Now the Focus and the Quantum I have are data ready, just looking further into the MMS settings. Thanks to a link I found on here, I have the registry key that the settings are in, but unlike windows, I cant just type regedit and change the settings, so trying to find a windows phone 7 regeditor to change that and all set. Will post if I find one. Thanks again guys. ohh and I saw someone is on this, (the MMS settings already, if I see a solution there too Ill post it as well. Good luck!
I got it to work on my Focus Bell Canada using the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924497
Very very happy
I want to automatically select the default network to which the device connects
(the first combo in Settings->WirelessControls->menu->Connections->Advanced->SelectNetworks -
See attached image)
My problem is as follows -
When I set up the connection to the operator -
it sets the default network to be <<3G Portal>>
I want to automatically change it to <<Internet 3G>>
(Or in the worst case -
Automatically delete the <<3G Portal>> -
making the <<Internet 3G>> the only available option -
which will force it to be default)
Does anyone know how to do this ?
(Even if some Cpp/C# code is needed - does anyone know the API ?)
Thanks
Not a lot of sense there
Looking at the screen print
The phone is set up to access the web FIRST via the 3G portal (every phone needs a portal to get online).
The second option looks to me to be a WIFI connection. Wifi always take priority over gprs/3g/hspa
so unless you can make a bit more clear what your looking for......................
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Of course, if you mean a different web access point get the APN settings and manualy add then from the settings menu - wireless and networks access point names - press the menu button - add apn
As I understand your Q, you wanna auto set the default network without having to manually change it everytime you hard reset / change roms?
Here's what I do for such things.
Get ceregistry editor, connect to your phone, export the registry to file, then, on the phone, change the default access point to the one you would rather it was, (possibly reboot phone here to be sure the registry has changed the default apn,) back into ceregistry editor, compare current registry to the snapshot, figure out which key changed, and to what value, then provision that reg key (via a cab, or provxml,) whenever you hard reset, after the network has been set up. (I have a cab with dozens of tweaks in it,you can just keep adding to it)

Thanks for the reply.
Both connections are over the Cellular network.
The first one (3G Portal) is set up by the operator to go via some proxies and stuff, which block certain services/sites as they are not stored on this proxy.
The Second one is "unfiltered" internet connection over the Cellular network.
Whenever the network is detected and set up, the settings are automaticelly set to go via the "proxied" connection.
I want to change it to work over the unfiltered connection.
I would like to know the registry keys or any other place this information is kept, so I could automatically change it.
I tried searching the registry for these values but could not get to a definite conclusion about where exactly the "default connection" is stored, or if it is stored in the registry altogether.
(If it is stored in the registry - I do NOT want a complete registry import/export - just the relevant keys)
Many thanks in advance.
Yes it is stored in the reg, but it stores an ID for each connection which is different for everyone, hence the method I suggested which would reveal both the key and the ID, I wasn't suggesting you import a whole registry, simply make a cab of just the one key. It would take about 10 mins to do, but I'm not running winmo so can't lookup the key for you.

Try using Data Controller by Red Frogfish. With this app, you can turn on and off all of your different connections indvidually.
Since, I have T-Mobile, I have the following connections:
T-Mobile Data
T-Mobile MMS
T-Mobile Internet
And, Data Controller lets turn each on or off as needed/wanted.
