HTC TyTN Battery Life with ActiveSync Really bad - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi
I have read a lot of threads about short battery life, but so far none of those applied to me. I have recently purchased this great device, and normally it gives me 2 days of usage time with a fair amount of fiddling etc, and no activesync. Now the main purpose for this purchase was the Activesync feature, as I have an exchange server pushing me my mail. I have the following settings:
Exchange 2003 SP2 without SSL certs/encriptions
Active sync set to download mails upto 0.5KB and from all times, not only the last 3-5 days, etc.
Active sync is also set for immediate retrieval, which leaves the phone with a permanent GPRS connection. There are PEAK times set, from Monday through Friday between 8AM to 6PM. Off peak times it gets it at every 2nd hour.
My battery lasts 12-14 hours like this, and I dont touch the phone much, plus dont have more than 20 minutes talk time per day. Yesterday I arrived home at 10PM with a dead battery already. This is really bad that I cannot even make it through a single day.
An addition to this the phone gets really warm, but only at the very end of its battery-life, lets say from 30% to 0 it goes in less then an hour or 2, and warms up pretty badly.
I also have the BandSwitch utility keeping my phone on GPRS only, and killing idle connections that are non-used for over 2 minutes. This I guess only takes affect during off-peak hours, but even in those hours, when I check my phone I can see a GPRS connection on for like 20-30 minutes. So I guess Bandswitch doesnt always do a good job.
Any hints? This is really annoying,
Thanks a lot,
Ben

Battery Life using PushMail

Hello all,
I'm using PushMail with MS Exchange and I am very happy about figuered out this feature. But now I have a new problem. If I have charged my battery up to 100% it only need half of a day to be empty without using my hermes (only UMTS for Push Mail)
Has anybody the same problem or a sollution ?
Thanks
sunmaker
Ok, try this. Open your maillbox in Outlook, then send yourself an email from another email account. Does the mail item hit your hermes and your inbox at (about) the same time?
note: if you have cache mode set in outlook then it should hit your hermes before you see it in your inbox.
If you can't access your mailbox with Outlook, then use OWA and hit refresh often to see when the mail item hits.
I suspect that you're going to find out that mail to your Hermes is delayed for up to 7 minutes from the time you see it in your outlook/owa viewed inbox. If you are seeing mail hit at about the same time, try this test periodically for an entire day to see if there's any time that this isn't the case. Let me know what you find out!

It's UMTS that is so power-hungry.
download Daniel Herrero's Bandswitch and force GPRS-only, to see the immediate result. Let us know; in my case it improved battery life from 20h to ~80h.
This doesn't necessarily account for a one half day drain. I'm on UMTS direct push and I go two days between charges. There's something else that I'm thinking about here. If sunmaker is seeing the delay I'm looking for then I'll reveal the reason.
Btw: on mine, email always hits my TyTN before I see it in Outlook.
You should be able to survive around 2 days with UMTS + DP .. and approx 3 days with just UMTS ...
You need to check for any processes/services that might have excessive CPU utilization ...

I have around the same usage in between charges. I get around 2 days with PM+UMTS but if I use my device extensively during the day i charge the same night.
half a day to empy sounds like there is a process chewing up your amps, or the battery is faulty.
It entirely depends on usage.
I get two days (similar to others above) using push and UMTS.
However, if ihave wireless enabled and bluetooth too, and using a bluetooth headset and make a couple of hours of calls in the morning, i'd be hard pressed to last the day out on the same charge.
I'm running Pushmail and UMTS also Bluetooth is enabled all day.
i spend about 35 minutes a day in calls and do send about 5 SMS mess. a day.
My battery last for about 20 hours.
Like i said, entirely depends on usage.
i recieve close to 30-40 work orientated emails a day ,of which at least 20 get replies instantly. add in 2hrs easily of actuall call talk time and its easy to see where my battery life goes.
a lot of people whinge about battery life, but if you expect alll the bells etc that a good WM5 device has theres going to be issues with long battery lifes.
My blackberry 8707g using UMTS and recieving maybe 10 emails a day barely last a day and a half from full charge. Thats without much else, and probably 10 mins of call time. SO i consider the Dopod 838Pro (or Hermes! ) to have more than adequate battery life for what i use it for. Besides a great, powered car holder and hard wired GOS device in the car has just about made this Hermes the best of any unit i've used, WM5, WM2003, Blackberry and palm inclusive.
thank you for so much response.
I have about 30 Mails per day some SMS and 60min phonecalls. I'm using the 1.20 radio so far. Could it be the radio ?
The radio versions i used before I have a lot of trouble with. Because my Hermes always loged out.
I have no other progs in the memory only the necessary (CommMgr, Active synk, Email).
I've ordered some new batteries (1350mAh ans 2.400(!) ) So I will look and see if it is the battery.

Battery drain TyTn

All,
I am experiencing serious battery drain on my TyTn. WiFi and Bluetooth are disabled and 100% charged battery drains overnight. This can't be normal even with 3G. Does anyone else experience this?
For me this is normal for 3G. My TyTN will last roughly 24 hours with UMTS/3G turned on, and 3-4 days with 3G turned off...
Not even lasting that long
Mine isn't lasting that long... How do u turn 3g off?
Phone -> Menu -> Options -> Band (?) -> Set it from auto to "GSM".
Use bandswitch. It will do the change very fast.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844&highlight=bandswitch
I think the Battery Drain problem relates to always on 3G connection. Infact I had also configured Outlook Software to check and download the emails from my POP3 Server after every 15 minutes. Apart from that, I was not using the Internet connectivity for any other application. But still around 10 to 15 percent of the Battery was getting consumed every Hour and which was quite high.
I have now Hard Reset my PDA and configured the PDA to only use GPRS (i.e. GSM) for checking the emails after every 15 minutes. I have not installed any additional Software after Hard Reset and now I am using the PDA as per the default factory settings. Only Outlook is checking the emails after every 15 minutes.
Now the Battery consumption has been around 30% in the last 12 Hours (i.e. from 100% to 70%). During this period, I have not received any calls and I have not used my PDA for any other purpose.
Kindly advise if the above consumption is normal or is it still on the higher side.
Many Thanks.
this looks normal to me. i do about 20-30% for a day depending on the amount of mail I get. this is through GPRS of course. 3G seems to suck battery at least 100% faster
It also depends on the Radio you have installed. I had 1.18 and experienced a heavy drain on 3G along with other users who upgraded to the RSA 1.35 ROM release. Since moving on to the 1.27 radio my battery consumption is now acceptable again.
Maybe this assists.
HTC Touch Diamond2 is next on our roll call of MWC debuts but this time it's less about the brand spanking novelty and more about balanced and sensible upgrades. People tend to have second thoughts about sequels but this one here is signed by HTC and may as well be the director's cut of a blockbuster.
I have a battery drainage problem too. I wish I can say mine drains within 12 hours. Once fully charged @ 100%, removed the charger, it drops 1% or so every 10-20 secs until ~80%. There onwards, if I use the phone, it drops drastically 5-10% each time I talk depending on the length of the conversation (most conversation barely reach 5 minutes.) If not used, it will drain the remainder within 6-8 hours. I tried changing a new batter and flashing with different ROMs and radios from this site but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I also expirienced battery drainage at my Hermes. What i do is i turn off my 3g and set my email send recieve to 30 minutes..
I noticed that when i have my data connection always on, it has a high persentage of battery drain..

Battery life

Guys
I dont know about all of you but I have spent the best part of a few days trying to be tolerant with the appalling battery life.
to set the scene: -
- it is a native orange build (upgrade from them) it has exchange activesync emaill and I have tried it with and without push activated (10 minute polling when not constant)
- It has one other e mail account - Hotmail, which is connected to sync every 2 hours
- it has NO other applications of any kind, it is not used for GPS, browsing etc (a deliberate ploy for me to see if the basics work) and the battery life is a complete joke, if anything it is worse than my previous WM devices. a full charge which is disconnected from the mains at 10am in the morning means I am down to a single bar by around 6-30pm. in this time I have checked mails on occasion, had about 30 min worth of calls and thats it basically
I, like many people on this forum am a seasoned user, but I would expect a minimum of 1 working days use (say 12 - 14 hours) and this is just not the case.
I will be returing this phone under my 14 day policy, but as one last try, I just wondered if anyone had something really obvious I was missing? all of the settings are 'out of the box' and i have used tweakHD but I must confess I do not want to have to mess about with the settings too much and quite frankly I dont see why I should, unless this type of performance is considered normal these days!
any thoughts guys?
regards
Kerry
12. Disable 'Beam' in Settings to conserve power.

I'd do the same too if I were you. A complete rundown of the battery on not so heavy usage in 8 hours is definitely not standard. Might be defective. Your battery should last you at least 14-16 hours on that type of usage. Oh and one other thing as an after thought, you mentioned the phone was new. Did you run the battery in a couple of cycles yet? A complete charge and a discharge of about 4-5 cycles sets the battery in its paces. Fyi.
I would take a look at these two threads.

thanks for the replies
thanks for the replies, I will study the replies and get an exchange unit based on the comments.
It has had three full charge / discharge cycles in the last 5 days, it wasnt difficult given how fast the battery ran out!
thanks so much for the help guys
Kerry
Mine also didn't last for more than a few hours on the first week, cause of the excessive playing around with the new toy, but after that I get 2 solid days on average usage with 2 bars to spare before I put it back on the charger.

Battery Life??

Hi Guys! and Gals..
Wondering hows your battery life?? Can you make it through a day Ok? I have a touch pro on Sprint and battery life stinks in the worse way.
Last time I checked, it went 13hrs until 31%.
I usually use it for around 90minutes continously reading or web browsing during my commute. There is also 4-5hrs (or more daily) during which I only get 1-2bars of receptions, so it drains battery faster. There was probably also a 30-40minute phone call using bluetooth.
I can go an 10-12 hour day with light use:
45 mins of phone and text (no bluetooth)
20 mins phone (bluetooth)
30 mins misc.
30 mins games.
20 texts.
Data on about 8 hours without Wifi and 4 on (N enabled)
1 hour browsing, emails etc.
30 mins with Microsoft Reader.
Probably a little more.
Also syncing a lot with calendars.
Not bad, but I feel like it could be better.
t-mobile usa.
I have 75% by end of the day
Adjust your PEAK TIMES for ActiveSync, that way your device isn't consistently trying to allocate resources to collect data such as emails.
Screen brightness, system volume, hibernating times, etc.
ALL OF THOSE are key factors in how quickly your battery will be drained. Anything involving the on-screen display is what will quickly deplete available battery life on a single charge. That may seem very "cliche" to say, but the fact is, this device has a 4.3-inch screen, so it's a power hog.
For today, it's been 17.5hrs since I unplugged and the phone has been mostly sitting except for a few occasional brief checks of the phone, 30minute email syncs, and a 15 minute phone call. It's at 40% battery after the 17.5hrs.
It did drop around 20% in the first 6hrs since the phone was in an area of horrible 0-1 bar reception. The rest of the time has been 2-3 bar reception.
17.5 hours @ 40%... are you serious?
My TMOUS HD2 has never gone more than 8 hours on a full battery charge. This is with "normal" usage. Regular email checks, activesync with direct push.
Comming from the Blackberry Bold II with 13-15 hours of battery under normal usage patters, the HD2 is VERY WEAK!!!.
I'm contemplating sacraficing the sleak look of the phone for the extended battery.
Anyone have the ex battery? How's your battery life?

If you need direct push in your life, then I suggest changing 3G to EDGE network.
Difference is quite noticeable.
It sucks, and if you want better battery life don't use it.I returned mine after 48hrs.
All the advice is great,but....
-If I have go from 3G to EDGE.
-Lower the brightness almost to the minimum.
-Set activesync up.....What is the point of having so much technology? if I can not use because the phone dies.
I need real time email and 3G to work, plus all the stupid menus that windows mobile still has made me change my mind.Microsoft has been in the market for a bunch of years and winmo still sucks.
Do not get to impressed with the HD and the movies, cause the thing dies in no time.
Don't buy it and stick with android.
I end the day with about 60% battery life left with mild-medium usage. A few phone calls, some maps/gps, active sync every 4 hours, facebook every 2 hours, weather every 3 hours.
VERY happy with battery life on this phone
i went all day yesterday (my first day with it) so i used it alot, took it of the charger, at 7:30am, and plugged it in last night at 10:00 and it was at 39%. that was BEFORE i turned off 3g(i dont get 3g in my area) so this hd2 blows the iphone battery out of the water....IMHO
my last device was blackberry 8900.
that thing lasted 3 days with moderate use. compared to that, 15 hour limit does suck, and there are times I don't want to use the phone to conserve the battery, which makes rage, but oh well. now I always carry an extra battery in my pocket, so that's a bit better. but that doesn't make it okay.
with the 3g off, wifi off, auto back light, running the energy rom apr 9. unplug on 9 am use about 100 sms and 10 minutes phone call with all the auto data off, just manual check weather and email twice still have 80% after 3pm.
turn off voice commends - this will help
Its getting better
I have recently done a few things to help the battery. I adjusted the the screen brightness to a comperable setting that a friend of mine has his set to on his iphone3gs I did not do anything to the 3g settings or anything like that. I set me email to sync every 4 hours. But my hotmail I just click send/receive and sync it myself. I play music all day on my phone. Check twitter internet facebooks while music is playing and a lot of texting over a hundred sent and recieved daily. Before I made a few tweeks it would kinda die quickly but now it appears to be a lot better.
My batter DOES NOT LAST FOR CRAP!!!!! I took it off charge at 8:13 and at 10:30 i checked my phone, it went from 100 percent to 81 percent. HOW DOES IT GO DOWN 19 percent in 2 hours when i didnt even USE the phone, i just hit the backlight to check the time, this battery is unacceptable everytime i check the phone the percent has dropped

Do you leave 3G turned on? Do you have your e-mail and/or weather checking themselves automatically?
The phone can certainly be doing things that consume the battery, even if you're not manually handling it at the time.
I don't understand why battery life seems to differ so much from phone to phone. My battery life is excellent and I use it a lot. I do have to charge it every night but I expect that from a smartphone. It always lasts me throughout the day with music, videos, calls, texts and web use on 3g. I couldn't be happier with the battery life of my phone.
PLEASE give me good tips how to save battery? BTW im using ENERGY's latest rom with cookie 1.7. i dont understand why i have to stop my email and turn off 3g when this phone is MEANT for these features. theres no point of a having an excellant phone when you cant use its features to its full potentiol without having it die within 10 hours( with moderate use)
Battery is weird
The other day i charged my hd2 fully then got on an airplane all connections were watch from paris with love which looks great on the phone landed after an hour and a half and my battery life was down to 15 percent i think i might have a bad battery when i am in the car i leave it on the charge and when i am in the hotels that i stay in it stays on the charge or plugged into my laptop and thoughts??

which uses more battery on hd2...

sync and receive mail/contact every5-10 min, or set to "as items arrive"??
apparently its set to send every so often as it searches every so often, I have google as push and doesn't really affect my battery life, but I also have my yahoo mail set to scan every hour, so not really sure lol
I used to have hotmail "as items arrive", but also had weather and facebook updates as regularly as possible. I didn't think it would have any effect. But after months and months of only getting 1 day out of the phone, I set hotmail to every 15 minutes and drastically reduced the frequency of downloads for weather and facebook, and I now get 2-3 days off 1 charge, depending on use of course.
I can't say how much difference that 1 setting alone made, but it must have made a difference.
wow..great battery life. May i ask what ROM you are using?
3 days?? how
i have mail set to every 2 hours. weather is manual. im on elegancia 9 have an updated radio.
i lose almost always 5 pct an hours in standby with minimal usage. if i throw browsing or other things its always 10 pct an hour. never can i not charge it over night

2 days ok, 3 days is a bit far-fetched.
...unless you turn off your phone most of the day. who knows.

I wonder this question too...I just switched from push to every 10 mins. it seemed to help but wasn't dramatic. I found turning off the data connection helped but I still don't know what that even accomplished.

On my phone, exchange push mail uses less power than checking every 15 minutes...

Mine lasts at least 2 full days with light to moderate use (data always on + check every hour on 2 mailboxes + twitter + weather, some browsing and 15-20 minutes phonecalls, 20-30 minutes using the phone for various things).
If I don't use it much (only phone calls and usual checks every hours, rest of the time on standby), it usually lasts 3 full days (and 2 nights )
I do charge it more often when I can though, since it's better for the battery
I do not think there is a difference with push mail and checking mail every 30 minutes.
I went to bed last evening with a 99% charge and woke up nine hours later with 93%.
I used to have two mail accounts check every 30 minutes, but changed one to push last evening.
I seem to be getting the same result, push or check.
6% loss in nine hours, 1 mail set to push, 1 to 30 minutes check, weather updated hourly (though I think weather does not actually update when phone is sleeping.
