weatherpanel radar image issue - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I can not get my radar image loaded in weatherpanel. Any guidlines?

That problems been reported a bunch of times lately. It seems to be a problem with the weather panel website and usually clears up within a few hours. The other way to fix it is to find a website with a radar image that you like for your area, right click on it and then on properties which should give you the address for that radar image only without the rest of the page. Just put that address in on the radar settings setup page and it should use that image from now on.

Google Images problem on Universal

Hello,
Has anyone else noticed that Google Images no longer works on the Universal or is it just me? I get the page and list of next pages etc but no images anymore. Could it be a registry setting needs checking?
Ditto here (JasJar in USA over wifi), suddenly the images do not show up. I think it's a problem with the PIE browser not refreshing, not sure if this is a problem with Netfront or Opera.
I tried running my image query through the Mobile Leap Proxy (http://demo.mobileleap.net/ ) and initially no images were shown, but there was this link at the top of the page that completed the refresh:
[ settings ]
REFRESH 0 ( http://images.google.com/images?q=guitar&sa=N&tab=wi&nojs=1 )
Click to collapse
Clicking that will bring up a Google page that does display the images. Any image searches from that page will display results with images. If you trim off the mobile leap proxy prefix on the URL and use the revised URL that is brought up after the refresh image search also works properly (for example use www.images.google.com/images?q=guitar&sa=N&tab=wi&nojs=1 to search for guitar images).
Once again the awesome Mobile Leap proxy saves the day!

Weather Woes

I am feeling frustrated. I have now tried EIGHT weather programs, none of which deliver what I would like to have. What I want is
1. A discrete Today screen line with the 7 day forecast for a chosen city, which can readily be changed.
2. Ability to set the program to sync by Activesync (or wifi) only (when I am traveling to foreign countries) and otherwise to autoupdate. I'd be happies with 'autoupdate only by activesync'.
3. Either a small memory footprint, or the ability to run off the SD card
4. Good forecasts (e.g. in US: NOAA or weather.com and *NOT* gismeteo.ru)
5. International cities
I would also be happy just to have RSS feeds for the cities I am interested in, but RSS feeds seem to only go two days out and be mostly composed of advertisements for weather.com.
Here are my notes on the programs I have tried.
SPB Weather 1.6.2: Version 1.5 worked well for me until recently, and has a great interface. However it kept downloading data by GPRS connection even though I had set it not to do so, and used a lot of data in Europe, which cost me at least $100. This problem (others report similar problems, though usually the opposite: set to update but didn't) was allegedly fixed by an upgrade to 1.6.2, but the upgrade killed off weather.com as a source and the new source -- gismeteo.ru -- doesn't have data for Pasadena, CA weather! (It found the city, but came back 'data not available.' Moreover, the program is over 2MB and doesn't run well of the SD card. Hence my search for a new program.
Fizz Weather 2.3: This program seemed very promising. It has all the right settings. The interface is klugy -- it takes a lot of clicks to change cities, see forecasts, etc. -- but it promises to do everything I want and has weather maps besides. However, it messed up the activesync connection somehow; once it updated over activesync, nothing else could run, even after the program stopped. Fizz ran well off minisd, though. I had to wipe and install a backup to recover activesync functionality.
Weathertogo 4.0: Free! Max of 3 cities and US only. No good for international.
Stocks and Weather Today; This program might work but is the opposite of discrete -- moving icons and large images and spinning storms. This is ideal for some people, but I found it too distracting and garish.
Pocketweather: This seems to be very similar to spb weather, perhaps a little better (extra screens of information available). But it has the same defects, too: gismeteo.ru data and the user is strongly advised not to run off minisd card.
Weather forecast 101: Attractive price ($1.99) but US only.
ADB Weather: Couldn't find Pasadena, CA data, probably uses gismeteo.ru feed.
Handy Weather (penreader.com): 3MB in size, but runs off SD card. Miserable city selection (but not a big deal since adding cities isn't frequent). Requires too much today screen real estate -- no discrete mode. Very economical on data: 2KB per city per download claimed, 3KB experienced. This is what I am currently using, with a link in PHM traylaunch to fire it up, and the today screen part disabled. Subscription service ($15/year); data from their own site, I think from accuweather (hearsay).
I'm in the same boat ... any news on that ?
Thanks
Handyweather
In the end, I paid for handy weather. It takes too much space on the today screen so I don't use it there, but it can run off the sd card, it takes very little data (4K per city tops), has lots of cities. This has worked well enough for me even though it isn't optimal.
I did experiment with weathertogo because it has a great today screen and it is free. It uses NOAA but unfortunately it uses NWS areas for forecasts which are much too large -- I live in Pasadena and my NWS area includes mountains, so it always forecasts freezes for me. It just isn't sufficiently accurate.
I wrote a program to do the updating of my weather and rss feeds, so that it doesn't update when I'm in europe. A great thing about running programs off the sd card is that it doesn't need to be reinstalled after a hard reset.

Good luck and if you find a better program, please post!
There's also WeatherPanel by MarsWare. Not sure if it meets your specs.

Stocks and Weather Today?
That program looks like Stocks and Weather Today, but might be different.
covers half your requirements
you an try weather watcher by singer's creations. it's free and offers half the stuff you were looking for...just doesn't update automatically.

if it doesn't link properly, try searching for weather watcher in google.
Pretty Nice

This program will remember a lot of cities but only seems to store data on one at the time. On the other hand, it provides good information about that city. Pretty nice at the free price. Nice interface. Apparently no today screen support. It was easy to add it to my automatic updating program that updates off activesync. Small footprint and runs off sd card.

After spending a lot of time looking for a decent weather program I ended up with Fizz as well. Like you said, the interface is a bit silly, but it does everything else very well. No problems here with activesync at all, using (the latest) version 2.31.

Hi, I am one of the developers for S & W T so I hope this is OK.
You can turn off the moving icons via the options page if you want.
In addition, I want to let you know that the US weather data is from NOAA and we use an XML service on the Internet to get us the data. This means that when NOAA changes the format of the data (which they do fairly often) you do not have to get an update of the software and reinstall it on your device. Go to http://www.xmlweather-usa.com/getNoaaWeather.php?location=Denver,CO if you want to see an example for the weather for Denver.
A lot of weather applications are always broken because of NOAA web site changes (just look at their bulletin boards (if they have one)). We have been using the XML weather service for over a year now and since we have been using it we have not had to release a single patch to deal with NOAA changes. This make life a lot easier for both us and our customers.
Again, I hope this post was not out of line.

Just wanted to make a comment.. A post like this is always ok.. if a developer of software wants to offer support for their product then all is good, as long as your not specifically here trying to sell your app and spamming the boards.. so your post is definitely OK, and welcome to the boards!
Also i just went to the site and checked out the app, and i must say that the Stocks & Weather Today Themes Edition Is a very interesting concept.. a little to bold for me, but i still like it!
Whatever weather app you decide on just make sure you stay clear of Journal Bar by Omega One. The app itself is a fantasic concept delivered in very tidy and functional today plugin however us users have had little or no service from the product since March last year. Check out this foum to get an idea of how poor Omega one are with regard to support. http://www.technologyatplay.com/main/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=4270&start=1
Unfortunetly this app is still on sale on most of the Pocket PC sites.
I have now opted for PocketWeather (ver 1.3.5) and to be honest I am well impressed. It didn't have the city I wanted in the pick list but it does give you the option to manually enter your city based on METAR city codes. Two minutes on Google found the code I needed and I haven't had any promlems since. - I love the earthquake tab!!!!!!

New Version of Google Maps (11/16/2007) Available

According to msmobiles.com (see http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6898.html) a new version of Google Maps was released on November 16th. I have DLd it, but haven't yet installed it.
From reading about it, I am not too sure how much has changed. Here is the list the site speaks to:
Real-time traffic conditions
See where the congestion is, and estimate delays in over 30 major US metropolitan areas.
Favorite places and routes
Save time (and avoid sore thumbs) by keeping a list of residential or business locations, and driving routes.
Insta-KB-o-meter
Monitor your data consumption in real-time — just look to the top right portion of your phone screen while using Google Maps.
Enhanced business info
After selecting a particular business, select the "Details" tab for hours of operation, hotel amenities, and more.
BlackBerry support
Just visit www.google.com/gmm on your BlackBerry's web browser, and you're all set to go.
The update can be found here: http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
Enjoy,

thanks for the post, wouldn't have known about it otherwise
Yeah, appreciate the heads up!
thanks for the link
Sweet thanks for the headsup! I installed it, and it works better than ever over HSDPA and with my bt gps!
How does this compare to LiveSearch?

I'm not really sure. LiveSearch was the best for a short while (IMO), until Google Maps came out with an executable version. I dropped LS back then, and have not looked back.
Google Maps has many nice features:
1) Look up any of your Contacts for whom you have Address Information
2) Drag-scroll around the map, in map or satellite view
3) Shows real-time traffic conditions
4) Zoom-in and out quickly and easily
5) Provides directions from point A to point B
6) Integration with GPS devices (I haven't used this, but imagine it works ok)
7) Find info on searched-for businesses and easily saving it into Contacts
Some "features" I'd like to see are:
1) Storing data in user-defined locations on the device
2) Management of that data ... selectively deleting old location searches
3) Tilting of the map aka Google Earth
Again, I don't really know how well LiveSearch has developed, so I really can't compare. But maybe you can judge for yourself from what I show above for GM.
-pvs
I'll install it and play around with it, but from what you describe it sounds much the same. LiveSearch also has something called community search that will show you events, movies, and todos in your area, along with traffic and local gas prices.
If I read you correctly, the only thing on your list LiveSearch doesn't have is an easy way to look up contact addresses.
I will report back this weekend, either bumping this one or starting a new thread. I'm quite attached to LS, but if I can find something even better, well, right on.
ER... just in case anyone is having a blond moment like me
the link is CAsE SenSitivE!!
nice find.
has it got rid of those anoying no data warning messages that you had to keep clicking OK to in order to continue?
I was originally using (the previous version of) Google Earth. So far, I like Microsoft Live. The addressing and directions are a LOT more accurate. When I look up addresses, google doesn't even find most of them. Live also does a lot better with one way streets and stuff like that too.
Yes, Live is much, much better, even the diectory is better. Map loading seems a little quicker also.
I wish google showed on the page what version it was up to, so I can know when they've updated it.
I love google maps mobile.
Wow, judging by sook's and Braingears' comments, it sounds like Live Search has come a long way in the past year. Might be time to give it another shot.
And yes, frenchglen, wouldn't it be nice? I guess they have some reason to want to keep the version number a secret, eh?

[DEV] App to transfer GPS coordinates to a certain website (map service)

There's this free web service called "Citizen's MapSite", which is free to use, where you can browse detailed topological maps of Finland. It also has search functions to use with GPS coordinates..
I'm not sure if they have this kind of service in any other countries, but this seems like a great way of using detailed topology maps in a number of outdoor activities for free!
the site itself is kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi. Now all we need is an application to start up the GPS and (at the push of a button) open up a browser with current GPS coordinates as the search terms. Basically an app that creates an http link using data from GPS.
..would anyone be interested in giving this a shot? In the mean while I need to manually copy and paste the coordinates
Here is a quick implementation which shows the current position.
Since I don't have a gps device and even don't live in Finland you are the first official beta tester!
known issues:
trackbar for the current zoom factor doesn't work
the network connection will not be closed on application exit
gps will be closed on application exit
Next time, please refer your requests to the Q&A section instead.
as this is already in development stages, change the subject to DEV and we'll leave it at that.
awesome heliosdev! I'll be leaving my "official beta test report" ASAP :-D
Teh Official Beta Test Report:
The search doesn't display any results and it seems its because the search is done with the wrong type of coordinates.. There's a drop down box with different types of coordinates and I think that the search should be done using "EUREF-FIN maantieteelliset (~WGS84)" ("EUREF-FIN geographical (~WGS84)" in English) instead of the "KKJ..." which is the default.
Here's an example of how the url behaves (if it's any help):
Using these coordinates N: "60.477603" E: "22.222587" (and "EUREF-FIN maantieteelliset (~WGS84)" in the drop down box) as search criteria, the site url becomes this:
http://kansalaisen.karttapaikka.fi/...ale=8000000&tool=siirra&styles=normal&lang=FI
Thanks for the feedback! I'm using the Lat/Lon coordinates. In the case of no gps device or no gps fix the application shows some fix place in Helsinki. This is the url.
Have you seen this?
To be sure that there is a gps fix try to use another gps application to be sure that gps is working and then open this application and see if it's showing the correct place.
I did some hasty conclusions yesterday, it seems.. Any-hoo: I got it working, sort of: I need to change the colon ( , ) to a comma ( . ) from the coordinates and then it displays the map of my surroundings beautifully ) for some reason it doesn't display the location arrow on the map though..? (when I search the same coordinates in opera manually the arrow is there)
new version is up which corrects the ',' to '.' issue.
Works beautifully (according to the few tests I've had time to do)!
Usability would improve greatly, if there was some sort of GPS status indication: GPS on/off, Lock/no lock and number of satellites tracked..?
updated with a statusbar showing
valid data: sat: number of sats for position|valid|total; altitude
no valid data: no position
Threre is more information like speed and heading which could be useful, too. Let's see if the new info works and then we can see how in terms of gui layout the additional information can be shown!
Btw, does the scale trackbar work for you?
Statusbar works ok, but only after 'refresh'. It would be more useful if it displayed the gps state 'live'. Ie. if there's no lock yet, but it's searching, it would show something like a row of dots scrolling. And after a lock it would display the sat info (This app has something like that for instance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424423). Now I need to hit refresh manually to check if there's a lock or no; at the moment I use google maps to get the sat lock and then I fire up SuomiTracker (awesome name btw to get the topomap.
The scale trackbar isn't working for me either.
I hear this works beautifully in Omnia also; someone commented on it on a Finnish mobile forum :-D

Weather not updating on SE panels

I have an O2 branded X1, the weather in the two Sony Ericsson panels does not autoupdate, I have set my location in accuweather.com as required.
My SBG panel works just fine and the weather upgrades as required. Has anyone else noticed this?
I have too! It's always 17 degrees in Brighton - and it's not today, I can assure you.
Any idea why this is, anyone?
This is one of the little deciders beofre this handset goes back to o2 and I look at the Touch Pro.
Anyone else out there notice this, I know its an issue, I know of other people who have the same problem.
Does the weather auto-update in the Sony Ericsson panels?
make sure u are set to auto update and not on manual update. There is such option, just look for it, its there for sure.
I think the weather feed from Accuweather just does not work for certain places, which is strange and pretty poor since you can actually select them and get the relevant info on their site. For example, set your location as London and it will update fine, the icon will change etc, but for very few other places.
Anyone had a different xperiance?!
yes, i have this problem too..I am starting to think the weather function do not get their weather details from the aacuweather.com
This is rreally annoying because when I switch the city to another city which cannot update the weather, it will simply leave the weather details of the Old city which sometimes is extrememly wrong.
I really hope either someone here or the sony ericsson will find a solution to this problem..or may be I will just move to use other panels instead
So how often do you have your ''web feeds update time'' set for in panel options? If you have it set to ''never'' then your weather never updates. And you have to set this up in every panel as each panel is a different interface shell.
It is up to your Xperia to go to accuweather and any RSS feed internet adresses to update all the info on your panel. Not up to the site to send to you.
One more hint. EVEN if you change the city in the panel settings, you have to go to accuweather and make sure you have added this location to ''your locations'' . This is so accuweather will add this cookie to your xperia. Thus allowing your Xperia to revisit the proper area on the site for your city settings. And if you don't have cookies enabled in your internet settings set to accept cookies..... then your weather can't update.
So far I have met 4 people face to face with the Xperia and all 4 had this same complaint. T the fixes were:
1. fellow had his phone to NEVER access data without his manually allowing it....weather couldn't see the site. I don't know where this setting is but after he enabled his phone data connection it worked great.
2. never set the ''web feeds update time'' to anything but ''never'' .....phone didn't know to update. He set the time to ''hour' and now his weather and CNN headline news RSS updates every hour.
3. Weather wouldn't update all day then magically start at 6:00pm every day. The girl didn't have a stong enough signal in her work building to establish data connection.
4. set area weather in accuweather site for only the city he lived in. when he would change cities, it would only show the weather for his home town no matter what city the panel.
If this doesn't help....sorry. You're outta luck.
I have read what you have all said, thanks for the feedback.
I think that some of you are right in your assumption that the weather does not update for all cities.
I live in Southampton UK, its about 60 miles south west of London. If I enter Southampton as my location in the panel, then the weather does not update, however if I enter London it does update.
I have both cities seleceted on the accuview weather site, it does not seem to make any difference as to which I select as the default city. The only critical point seems to be the city selected in the panel. I have my web feed on autoupdate every hour etc etc. My rss webs feeds update with no issues, my cookies are selected to on.
I just think that its a pretty bad show when my city's weather will not update in these two SE panels but works just fine in any other panels that have this function. The SPG panel is by far the most useful one in my humble opinion.
I would be greatful if one of you who has this working for your city can put in my default location, ie Southampton UK, and let me know if it works for you.
Thanks in advance.
I have exactly the same issue with Newcastle I now use the Pointui panel though so its not really a big deal, but it would've been nice if it actually worked...
I too am suffering a similar issue.
Live in brighton and updates do not work, however if I change to London it updates fine.
Here is a quick question.
Are most of the people who have "weather update problems" that can't be fixed in the UK?
It would make so much sense to have the option of updating weather based on GPS location. I want to know the weather WHERE I'M AT, not where I live.
Anytime I travel, I have to go into the settings to tell the X1 where I'm at. A phone with GPS shouldn't require such maintenance. Even if there is no GPS data available, weather based on cell tower id should work just fine.
RSS workaround
I couldn't get where I live to work either.
I ended up doing a workaround to get the weather information I wanted by setting up an RSS web feed from accuweather for my city. Incidentally, I had to change the city name to all capitals for it to work - which might be why the built in SE panel one doesn't work!
There is actually an advantage to the RSS feed route too: click the feed and you get access to a 2 day forecast without the overhead and hassle of having to launch your internet browser and go to the accuweather site!
I need help with this issue. I have my SE panel set to web feed updates time every hour. I can't seem to find a connection setting to allow data coonnection automatically. Yet when I hit the update button on the panel, both my cities update in a matter of twenty seconds. I have Boston and Salonika chosen so they are part of SE's canned list. They are both also listed on Accu weather's site as my locations. Is there a way to get the device to request an update on it's own or do I need the spb weather panel.
