Yahoo Go! 2.0 for WM5

So Yahoo Go! seems to have come out today for devices running Windows Mobile. I downloaded and installed it immediately.
The first time I ran it I noticed it was VERY slow, and eventually crashed during initialization. I had to reset my 8525 to get it to run again. The second time around it ran (again, very slow). It deos require you to log in to your Yahoo account.
The UI is different and bit interesting. The front screen looks like it's intended to replace your home screen with today's date and links to calendar and contacts, as well as a box for searching. A mac-like dock down at the bottom rotates between the different features with a little animation.
There are sections for photos (flickr?) where you can upload your own and share your photos - weather, something called watchlists (I'm guessing RSS or something), stock reports, sports reports, news, and maps & directions. Each item gives you a preview before you actually run it.
I tried uploading a photo and the program crashed while changing the description. The interface looked pretty nice though - I'm assuming the photos end up on your flickr page. This may be a good reason to start photoblogging!
The maps function is pretty cool - probably a bit better than the google maps application for windows mobile. It also includes sat view, traffic, find nearby whatever, etc. It also gives you the option of connecting a GPS, but I don't have one handy although I'd love to see the directions function work with it.
The whole UI is an improvement on usual Windows Mobile standards, and once loaded the software runs reasonably fast and without hiccup. I think it is intended to be run all the time.
I'd like to hear everyone else's impressions.

The biggest disappointment for me is that ver 2.0 no longer syncs calendar info.
If you want to view your calendar, you now have to log onto yahoo before you can view it.

If you use yahoo for everything (email, calendar, etc.), this is a pretty nice thing to have. I'd call it essential in this case.
Otherwise, I think Livesearch is much more useful for looking up businesses in your area and getting driving directions and/or phone numbers to them.

Live search is pretty much useless unless you are in a major city.

I am really disappointed in it. Has good intentions and functionality, but the software seems extremely buggy and slow. I had to soft reset my phone a majority of the times trying the software out. Google Maps and Live Search seems much smoother. Hopefully they fix out all the bugs.

New Version of Google Maps (11/16/2007) Available

According to msmobiles.com (see http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6898.html) a new version of Google Maps was released on November 16th. I have DLd it, but haven't yet installed it.
From reading about it, I am not too sure how much has changed. Here is the list the site speaks to:

I'm not really sure. LiveSearch was the best for a short while (IMO), until Google Maps came out with an executable version. I dropped LS back then, and have not looked back.
Google Maps has many nice features:
1) Look up any of your Contacts for whom you have Address Information
2) Drag-scroll around the map, in map or satellite view
3) Shows real-time traffic conditions
4) Zoom-in and out quickly and easily
5) Provides directions from point A to point B
6) Integration with GPS devices (I haven't used this, but imagine it works ok)
7) Find info on searched-for businesses and easily saving it into Contacts
Some "features" I'd like to see are:
1) Storing data in user-defined locations on the device
2) Management of that data ... selectively deleting old location searches
3) Tilting of the map aka Google Earth
Again, I don't really know how well LiveSearch has developed, so I really can't compare. But maybe you can judge for yourself from what I show above for GM.

I'll install it and play around with it, but from what you describe it sounds much the same. LiveSearch also has something called community search that will show you events, movies, and todos in your area, along with traffic and local gas prices.
If I read you correctly, the only thing on your list LiveSearch doesn't have is an easy way to look up contact addresses.
I will report back this weekend, either bumping this one or starting a new thread. I'm quite attached to LS, but if I can find something even better, well, right on.

has it got rid of those anoying no data warning messages that you had to keep clicking OK to in order to continue?

I was originally using (the previous version of) Google Earth. So far, I like Microsoft Live. The addressing and directions are a LOT more accurate. When I look up addresses, google doesn't even find most of them. Live also does a lot better with one way streets and stuff like that too.

Yes, Live is much, much better, even the diectory is better. Map loading seems a little quicker also.

I wish google showed on the page what version it was up to, so I can know when they've updated it.
I love google maps mobile.

Wow, judging by sook's and Braingears' comments, it sounds like Live Search has come a long way in the past year. Might be time to give it another shot.
And yes, frenchglen, wouldn't it be nice? I guess they have some reason to want to keep the version number a secret, eh?

Since we have all been having fun watching the stock market recently, I decided to write a quote/chart app, using the style of that fruity excuse for a phone as a springboard. So I present for your enjoyment an app called "Ticker Tape".

FAQ
Can you add the ^XYZ index and the XYZ stock to TickerTape?
NO. The data is downloaded from Yahoo, because it is the only free service I know of. If Yahoo doesn't have it, then I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it for this app.
The data is not scraped off a web page, so sites that display the data you want (even Yahoo's own real-time quote pages) are not useful to Ticker Tape.
Yahoo (and therefore Ticker Tape) has information for a lot of the world markets, but there are some markets it does not provide. Again, I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.
How do I get quotes for Company X?
Find the ticker symbol here, and add it to Ticker Tape.
I added a ticker, but there's no data. Why?
You probably need an exhange extension at the end of the ticker. Find the correct ticker symbol here.
Where can I get a list of indices?

I installed it on my non-VGA device, and it looks funny.
Ticker Tape was initially designed for VGA. This *is*, after all, a forum for Diamonds. The latest version has been tweaked to support QVGA, but there might be some areas that still need work. It does not and will not have support for square-screen devices.

GeckoDev, I'm still waiting for a decent stock app and this looks very promising. I'll be an avid supporter if you keep developing.
My only suggestion, and you've probably already thought of this, would be to include enough options in settings for what happens over the data connection based on the usage of the app.
For example: have checkboxes/choices in settings for options like such as:
-Continue streaming in realtime when program is minimized
-Prompt user that data is still streaming when program is minimized or unfocused after: (then add choices for 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, etc)
-Do not download any data when program is minimized
-Only update manually
-Update every: (choices of times)
You get the idea, something like that. The point being that those of us that don't have unlimited data connections, warnings and settings should be there to prevent accidental overages of data usage. A streaming stock app would be a very easy app to end up forgetting is on and using data and causing overages, whereas at least with a broswer, you're most likely eventually just going to end up parked on one page with no further data being streamed, if you accidentally leave the browser open.

It seems great, I willing to wait for this.

I like those options. I had planned on the last two already, but the first few for what to do when minimized are great ideas.
And here I thought I was taking a day off ...

I have been searching for a suitable charting program for over three years. I have tried them all and consider all of them unsuitable. I have had to make my own local HTML files with links to www.stockcharts.com/avantgo mobile charts to deal with the shortcoming.
This Apple-like program would be awesome. If you put this on Handango, I would buy it.
Recommendation: as a first attempt, you could do a lot worse than the Apple interface, so I say stick with it for the first version.
Are you using Yahoo! data for this? I prefer Bloomberg, but Yahoo is OK.

Yes, Yahoo is the only free feed I know of. The Bloomberg feed costs several thousand in subscription fees. Some apps out there screen-scrape to get their data, but I think that approach is prone to error, so I'm just getting the raw data, which is why it downloads so few bytes.
The problem with the Yahoo feed is the delay, even though I'm telling it to send me real-time quotes. It appears to ignore that part (except for indexes). Does anyone know of a free feed that provides real-time data?

Yes, this is fantastic. I think MSNBC has a feed, but not sure of how interactive it is (think I read that somewhere from a developer). Very pleased with the appearance, and look forward to customizing to my portfolio.

I don't know of any that are free unfortunately. All the services want "power-trader" subscription fees to be able to get true realtime. If anyone finds a true free realtime feed, let us know!
In the meantime, a delay is fine with me since I won't be making spot trading decisions based on what my phone is telling me at any given second.

This program is amazing. I like it very much.
Just some ideas for further development.
1. Please add an "exit" command. I don't know how to exit this program.
2. For the updates, please add a timer on it since market time is only from 9 to 4pm.
3. can you make it response to direction keys?

Weather not updating on SE panels

I have an O2 branded X1, the weather in the two Sony Ericsson panels does not autoupdate, I have set my location in accuweather.com as required.
My SBG panel works just fine and the weather upgrades as required. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have too! It's always 17 degrees in Brighton - and it's not today, I can assure you.
Any idea why this is, anyone?
This is one of the little deciders beofre this handset goes back to o2 and I look at the Touch Pro.

Anyone else out there notice this, I know its an issue, I know of other people who have the same problem.

make sure u are set to auto update and not on manual update. There is such option, just look for it, its there for sure.

I think the weather feed from Accuweather just does not work for certain places, which is strange and pretty poor since you can actually select them and get the relevant info on their site. For example, set your location as London and it will update fine, the icon will change etc, but for very few other places.

This is rreally annoying because when I switch the city to another city which cannot update the weather, it will simply leave the weather details of the Old city which sometimes is extrememly wrong.
I really hope either someone here or the sony ericsson will find a solution to this problem..or may be I will just move to use other panels instead

So how often do you have your ''web feeds update time'' set for in panel options? If you have it set to ''never'' then your weather never updates. And you have to set this up in every panel as each panel is a different interface shell.
It is up to your Xperia to go to accuweather and any RSS feed internet adresses to update all the info on your panel. Not up to the site to send to you.
One more hint. EVEN if you change the city in the panel settings, you have to go to accuweather and make sure you have added this location to ''your locations'' . This is so accuweather will add this cookie to your xperia. Thus allowing your Xperia to revisit the proper area on the site for your city settings. And if you don't have cookies enabled in your internet settings set to accept cookies..... then your weather can't update.
So far I have met 4 people face to face with the Xperia and all 4 had this same complaint. T the fixes were:
1. fellow had his phone to NEVER access data without his manually allowing it....weather couldn't see the site. I don't know where this setting is but after he enabled his phone data connection it worked great.
2. never set the ''web feeds update time'' to anything but ''never'' .....phone didn't know to update. He set the time to ''hour' and now his weather and CNN headline news RSS updates every hour.
3. Weather wouldn't update all day then magically start at 6:00pm every day. The girl didn't have a stong enough signal in her work building to establish data connection.
4. set area weather in accuweather site for only the city he lived in. when he would change cities, it would only show the weather for his home town no matter what city the panel.
If this doesn't help....sorry. You're outta luck.

I think that some of you are right in your assumption that the weather does not update for all cities.
I live in Southampton UK, its about 60 miles south west of London. If I enter Southampton as my location in the panel, then the weather does not update, however if I enter London it does update.
I have both cities seleceted on the accuview weather site, it does not seem to make any difference as to which I select as the default city. The only critical point seems to be the city selected in the panel. I have my web feed on autoupdate every hour etc etc. My rss webs feeds update with no issues, my cookies are selected to on.
I just think that its a pretty bad show when my city's weather will not update in these two SE panels but works just fine in any other panels that have this function. The SPG panel is by far the most useful one in my humble opinion.
I would be greatful if one of you who has this working for your city can put in my default location, ie Southampton UK, and let me know if it works for you.

Here is a quick question.
Are most of the people who have "weather update problems" that can't be fixed in the UK?

It would make so much sense to have the option of updating weather based on GPS location. I want to know the weather WHERE I'M AT, not where I live.
Anytime I travel, I have to go into the settings to tell the X1 where I'm at. A phone with GPS shouldn't require such maintenance. Even if there is no GPS data available, weather based on cell tower id should work just fine.

RSS workaround
I couldn't get where I live to work either.
I ended up doing a workaround to get the weather information I wanted by setting up an RSS web feed from accuweather for my city. Incidentally, I had to change the city name to all capitals for it to work - which might be why the built in SE panel one doesn't work!
There is actually an advantage to the RSS feed route too: click the feed and you get access to a 2 day forecast without the overhead and hassle of having to launch your internet browser and go to the accuweather site!

I need help with this issue. I have my SE panel set to web feed updates time every hour. I can't seem to find a connection setting to allow data coonnection automatically. Yet when I hit the update button on the panel, both my cities update in a matter of twenty seconds. I have Boston and Salonika chosen so they are part of SE's canned list. They are both also listed on Accu weather's site as my locations. Is there a way to get the device to request an update on it's own or do I need the spb weather panel.

need google reader tips

hello all.
i would like your thoughts and tips on running on your xperia. more than %90 of my desktop webbrowsing is from reader. i read and skim through over 1200 items daily with 60 feeds
unfortunatly i havent managed to use the reader effectivly on my mobile device. i use opera mobile(wifi) + ucweb (bandwidth friendly). here are some of the problems that prevent me from using the reader
-using the mobile page www.google.com/reader/m is only good for toy phones and lacks too many features
-using rss hub is too bandwdth hungry and wastful (i read the contents of about %40 only)and does not sync with google reader which is too important
-using the iphone page www.google.com/reader/i on opera mobile is not nearly as good as the desktop experiance + bandwidth hungry with all the big pictures if you open the stories+ buggy when opening the stories
-using the iphone page on ucweb or operamini is too buggy cant even go to next page and cand even open items
anybody can help by providing me with your experiance and tips on what works best for you
it seems the only real way is for google to realease a dedicated app (bandwidth and finger friendly).

I use Newsbreak and its pretty decent... there are a couple of threads about (perhaps more on the wider board rather than just the x1 part) rss readers and so forth, they have a list of some pretty decent ones and it even lists their abilities and pros and cons etc... If I can find it I will post it... but that probably wont be till friday as I dont have a lot of time to search at the moment...

Shadowdh, google reader is RSS but i cant Sync with another client with it so i can pickup where i left from the desktop
emuneee, that is so cool. if possible, can you address my concerns especially the low bandwdith part (maybe just disable all pics and flash will be good enough) and an option to download all unread stories locally to the machine.

Maybe you should try pRSS Reader. I think it syncs with Google Reader, you can view the posts offline with pictures, it can even download the full article (the link) if you specify it.

Thanks for this recommendation, using it now and does sync with my google reader account.
It is a shame that it's been discontinued, but it does seem to have as many features as other RSS readers out there.

Update on pRSSreader data usage
Just thought i'd give a warning to those wanting to use pRSSreader to sync with their Google Reader service.
This program uses a LOT of data!
I'm using SPB Wireless Monitor to watch how much data each program uses since i'm on a limited data plan. In about 8 hours of usage, the program used 9.4Mb of data.
This bad part was that this was without downloading the pics or whole articles for offline use. The program itself is great, but I would recommend scheduling it to update through WIFI and not automatically using GPRS.

i too am suffering greatly from out-of-the-plan accedantal extra data usage
is there a way to prevent certain app like prssreader to even use the GPRS/3G connection. there must be some kind of trick to do this
i just want to allaw ucweb(or opera mini) and activesync to have access to the 3g/edge cell data connection since they are effecient in data usage. other "wastful and expensive" apps like opera mobile , prss, should only be restricted to wifi

You can disable auto updates in the program and only do manual updates when you have your wifi on. Wifi takes preference over an active 3G connection anyway.
You can also set it to auto update when docked to your pc so it uses your pc's internet connection, or set it to update at a certain time. This way if you have a profiles program (like GProfile), you can set the Wifi to turn on at a certain time to match this.

fxcoupeman83, what you are saying is exactly what i am doing but accedental mistakes happen (a lot in my case)
preventing apps from using the cell connection is the only clean way of solve the problem properly

i've just found this wonderful piece of software i was looking for a long long time, prssreader. it does exactly what i want : sync my google reader on mobile... what a pity that it is discontinued........
the data consumption is not really a problem for me as i've an unlimited 3g data plan, but it's sure less data would be better
what i'm looking for in a windows mobile rss reader is :
-bidirectionnal google reader sync (with read/unread/starred states)
-ability to download ALL the feed for offline reading
-ability to send feed via email (with internal mailer if possible)
-quick reading of feed header and quick toogle of read/unread state for articles you don't want to read
-send feed to social networks (twitter, facebook, etc...)

two questions:
-is it going to be finger friendly? especially for go ing to next item, starring and marking as unread
-can you view youtube videos though flash player?
