TomTom receives weak GPS Signal - P3600 General

Hi,
I have a Trinity and I am using it with TomTom 6, newest version.
When I go out and use TomTom it finds the GPS signal but it shows that the signal is weak... only 2 bars, although at the same place with my Xda Orbit (HTC P3300) I had full signal... why is this so? different GPS chip?? which I think should not be the problem. or what else?
and does anyone know a software which can download the satellite data from internet?? xda orbit used to have one, but I do not remember the name...
Thanks to you all
Reza

You shouldn't be seeing such a difference in genuine signal levels- does it take longer to get a fix on your Trinity? It may be that TTN is misreporting the signal level, or you may have an antenna problem. If the fix times are similar, you may not have a real problem.
Have you tried a GPS app with a more comprehensive display of signal levels?
The Orbit does use the slightly better 12 channel SIRFStar III chip than the Trinity's 8 Channel Qualcomm chip, but comparative tests have shown little 'real world' difference- maybe a couple of minutes better TTFF on the Orbit.
The Orbit can use a program called QuickGPS which uses the phones cell info to give a location, which then downloads satellite data from HTC's website. Although the facility is built into the Trinity (A-GPS) there is as yet no software which implements it.

well actually it finds the satellite signals quite fast. I have no other program, only GPStuner... I will try that one too.
Thanks for your help

I agree fully... where is yours?

hi everybody .... for some reason it is working fine now. I had changed the GPS receiver from built-in to the other option (NMEA GPS) with the setting (COM9, 115200 Baud) and then it worked fine. Then I changed the settings back to internal GPS Receiver ... now it is working good ...
Thanks for your help

Fortuna BTclip-on + TomTom City Maps

Hi, as a newbie please forgive any protocol errors, this is my first post to any forum.
I am using a SPV M1000 with a Fortuna BT Clip-on, I have managed to pair the devices, no probs so far. When I switch from the TomTom GPS screen (after recieving a signal) to the TomTom City Maps, the BT conection to the Clip-on is cut, and therfore I do not get a fix on the map. This problem also occurs when I try to use Fugawi3 (another mapping prog).
What am I doing wrong, any and all help would be much appreciated.

gps coesist problems
I've found that few gps programs coesist properly. I tried tt3 + smartst and had intermittent problems. City maps seems to break everything. The only solution I found was to have say a sprite full backup on my sd card and restore the product suite I wanted, not ideal I know.
i have an mv1000, and i have both mapopolis and tomom3 installed
with connection to fortuna clip on. the baud rate speed on mine is set to 38400 on com 5. never had any problems with devices and software..
although i always had the problem of the fortuna not initalising the bluetooth section...hence i have to switch it off and on a few times. this problem has always been on there way before i bought the mv1000
I thank you all for the help so far, but as a walker and not a driver, I use TomTom City Maps extensively. As both replies have mentioned TT3, I wonder if this maybe a better road to follow. But is TT3 not based on vehicular transport? How useful would it be for walking around Paris or London for instance?
I migrated to the m1000 because the detail of TTCM's was much improved over the Palm version, I would be dissapointed to have to resurect my Handsping Visor and GPS companion just to use this program. As TomTom City Maps no longer features on TT's website, I am struggling to get help.
The baud rate speed on my device is set to NMEA 0183v2 38400 on COM5

HTC P3600 GPS performances (Qualcomm gpsONE vs SiRFstar III)

Here is the test of the HTC P3600 GPS (Qualcomm gpsONE chipset) compared to SiRFstar III GPS chipset based devices
made by www.gpspassion.com
--> English version
--> French version
Yes, Qualcomm GPS seems less acurate.
But with TomTom as long as I am on the right side of road I don't care...
Also there is one thing I like with this GPS: it almost never loses signal once it is fixed.
I am able to go in my flat (or almost any building with windows) and keep the signal whereas my Sirfstar II loses signal as soon as I pass the door.

Newbie Problem

Hi all,
I'm an htc newbie, because i've just bought an used p3600 (Trinity s300+).
I've a problem with gps, i've installed tom tom 7 and gps test 1.0.4 for pocket pc, but either program don't recognize the built-in gps.
this is my actual configuration:
O.S.
ROM: Kamba_a v10.1
RADIO Version: 1.16.00
External GPS Settings:
Programs: port GPD1
Hardware: port COM9 Baud rate: 57600
I don't know if the problem depends on my configuration or on a broken gps!
Is there a method to know the cause of the problem?
Thanks in advance
In TomTom 7, you need to use "Other NMEA GPS receiver" instead of "Built-in GPS receiver", then select 57600 baud and Com 9.
I would assume your other program would need Com9 and 57600?
Actually, I just re-read your post and noticed your radio version. That seems strange for a Trinity. Maybe it's something I don't know, but it could be your radio needs to be upgraded.
For instance, the radios that I'm familiar with are numbered:
1.38.00.11
1.46.00.11
1.46.30.11
1.50.08.11
1.56.70.11
Possibly, they are different in Italy?
It's quite possible, given that it is a second hand purchase, that the Trinity in question has one of the early Radios, that didn't have the GPS enabled. I know mine initially didn't, it needed an upgrade. At the time i just upgraded it direct from HTC to the latest WM5 ROM. Link to MegaUpload
Thanks for your repsonse!
I'm in Italy, but the phone was born in France . Is an used SFR s300+.
Originally it had a WM5 rom with gps enabled, now it has th WM6 Kamba_a v10.1 rom!
It is possible to upgrade only the radio rom, with one of those suggest by
SuperSport?

yes, in my oppinion the 1.56.70.11 is the best
Thanks to all!
I've just updated the radio rom, i've used the 1.56.70.11 version!
The first test show gps data!!! fantastic!
Now i've a last question, How can improve the time of first gps connection?
which is the best software that doesn't use a-gps?
there are many opinions about that. read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463898
clear skies, don't move
Hi gaivao.
Welcome aboard. From over 3 years experience, what makes GPS fix to be the fastest is just what the header says. Turn your GPS application and try to acquire signal away from buildings. Being stationary helps too. It can take few minutes the first time after soft reset, but then drops to 30-40 seconds (at least on the part of the world i am at.
All programs like Quick-GPS are , IMO , not changing much, if ever. It's hard to tell because the test conditions to get a real answer are not ideal to really put the application only under test.
Two major comments: 1- have your phone run on external power when you use GPS. battery lasts hardly 3 hours with GPS on. 2- the less soft resets you do, the more likely you get quick fix every time you need it.
I use the GPS every day, and I do carry a spare battery for the times I forget to disconnect the GPS and leave the car. I have been once away from external source, and my battery died because of the GPS, and all my schedule for that day was on my phone (customers, phone numbers, to do list, etc.). Was pretty ugly..
Enjoy the phone- it is a good purchase for the next year or so.

I suggest you to change the Program Port from GPD1 to COM4: because most applications don't use a such port. After that, you can configure your favorite Navigatin software to the selected Port. The Advantage: you can run multiple Application with simultaneously access to the GPS device through the Program Port.

Thanks BigE for the explanation!
Now i've another problem!
i've open a new post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=497352
Can you give me some information about the problem or about a possible solution?
Thanks!
I would say you gps is not working cos your radio is not up to date I tried it with 1.16 and it would not work for me, I put on radio 1.46 and it worked fine on internal gps with tomtom 6 and other gps on tomtom 7

Change of radio affects Garmin/Tomtom GPS setting

Recently obtained a HTC HD locked to orange network with stock radio 1.09.25.14. Updated to radio 1.17.25.09 using uspl.
Previously Tomtom setting is to use "built-in" GPS and Garmin uses "Serial GPS". After the update no GPS signals displayed unless you set TomTom to use "Use other NMEA GPS" and Garmin to "Intermediate Driver".
With the new radio, Tomtom locks onto gps much quicker and show higher signal strength (tested inside house!) but Garmin show a slightly lower signal strength (subjective opinion).
Hope the above will help others and comments most welcome.
That's strange
I use radio 1.17 and tomtom says it's using internal gps.
I guess it depends which version of Tomtom you have, because mine (7.910) seems to auto-detect the gps no matter which setting its on, internal gps or nmea other device. I agree that the latest 1.17.25.09 radio is the best though, as locking on is really quick and does work in buildings nicely.

Touch HD GPS Problem (no lag problem)

Hey all,
I have a problem with my GPS, it just wont start up, even if i wait for an hour it wont start up or find any Sattelites.
I found a lot of GPS problem threats, but they all go about GPS lag. And for me its not the lag, it just wont startup at all. The phone does recognize the build in GPS, so i dont think its broken.
Does anyone had the same problem, or knows a solution to this problem?
I also tried several different ROMS and Radios, including the stock ROM and Radio. but with every ROM or Radio it gives the same problem. I also did several Hard Resets with the different ROMS, but nothing changed.
I hope someone knows a solution.
Many thanx in advance
Fine.... we just need to know which GPS software you are using and have you updated GPS data via QuickGPS
Yes i have updated GPS via QuickGPS. and i normally use my GPS with TomTom and Google Maps.
I also tried some GPStest tools: Chartcross GPS test, HTC GPStool.
Euh.... sorry, if you are using all that, then what is your problem?
Can't get GPS lock even if mentioned software is starting? Does TomTom detect your GPS?
Do you have problems with WiFi or Bluetooth or FM radio?
I also have proble with GPS...
I use Igo8,and before one month it was ok..But now, just not working..
I go find gps on port 4 but no satelite signal..
I use quick gps,and all support software ,,but still no satelite signal to catch!!!
any solution??
Try with a different radio and/or ROM version. I had a similar problem - after updating my radio version I could no longer see the signal bars from the sattelites in GarminXT. I had no signal and then all of a sudden - 3D GPS lock (and still no signal bars from the sattelites).
HI ALL
For a week I bought an HD HTC T8282. I've found that GPS does't work. I installed IGO 8.3.2. These version I used it on a HTC P 3600 and it worked great. Now on HD, the application is open but not connect. When GPS is enabled, application displays the following message: "Can not find the GPS receiver.
You can help me with some advice? Is a problem with the operating system? I have a WM 6.5.3.
Thanks.

Try with another software - Google Maps is free and included in most of the ROMs, but be sure to activate GPS within the menu. Also try with GPS diagnostics tools - e.g. HTC GPSTool and ChartCross GPSTest. The latter will actually find the GPS receiver and will lock the sattelites, so it is a perfect tool for the job.
