Newbie Problem - P3600 General

Hi all,
I'm an htc newbie, because i've just bought an used p3600 (Trinity s300+).
I've a problem with gps, i've installed tom tom 7 and gps test 1.0.4 for pocket pc, but either program don't recognize the built-in gps.
this is my actual configuration:
O.S.
ROM: Kamba_a v10.1
RADIO Version: 1.16.00
External GPS Settings:
Programs: port GPD1
Hardware: port COM9 Baud rate: 57600
I don't know if the problem depends on my configuration or on a broken gps!
Is there a method to know the cause of the problem?
Thanks in advance

In TomTom 7, you need to use "Other NMEA GPS receiver" instead of "Built-in GPS receiver", then select 57600 baud and Com 9.
I would assume your other program would need Com9 and 57600?
Actually, I just re-read your post and noticed your radio version. That seems strange for a Trinity. Maybe it's something I don't know, but it could be your radio needs to be upgraded.
For instance, the radios that I'm familiar with are numbered:
1.38.00.11
1.46.00.11
1.46.30.11
1.50.08.11
1.56.70.11
Possibly, they are different in Italy?

It's quite possible, given that it is a second hand purchase, that the Trinity in question has one of the early Radios, that didn't have the GPS enabled. I know mine initially didn't, it needed an upgrade. At the time i just upgraded it direct from HTC to the latest WM5 ROM. Link to MegaUpload

Thanks for your repsonse!
I'm in Italy, but the phone was born in France . Is an used SFR s300+.
Originally it had a WM5 rom with gps enabled, now it has th WM6 Kamba_a v10.1 rom!
It is possible to upgrade only the radio rom, with one of those suggest by
SuperSport?

yes, in my oppinion the 1.56.70.11 is the best

Thanks to all!
I've just updated the radio rom, i've used the 1.56.70.11 version!
The first test show gps data!!! fantastic!
Now i've a last question, How can improve the time of first gps connection?
which is the best software that doesn't use a-gps?

there are many opinions about that. read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463898

clear skies, don't move
Hi gaivao.
Welcome aboard. From over 3 years experience, what makes GPS fix to be the fastest is just what the header says. Turn your GPS application and try to acquire signal away from buildings. Being stationary helps too. It can take few minutes the first time after soft reset, but then drops to 30-40 seconds (at least on the part of the world i am at.
All programs like Quick-GPS are , IMO , not changing much, if ever. It's hard to tell because the test conditions to get a real answer are not ideal to really put the application only under test.
Two major comments: 1- have your phone run on external power when you use GPS. battery lasts hardly 3 hours with GPS on. 2- the less soft resets you do, the more likely you get quick fix every time you need it.
I use the GPS every day, and I do carry a spare battery for the times I forget to disconnect the GPS and leave the car. I have been once away from external source, and my battery died because of the GPS, and all my schedule for that day was on my phone (customers, phone numbers, to do list, etc.). Was pretty ugly..
Enjoy the phone- it is a good purchase for the next year or so.

I suggest you to change the Program Port from GPD1 to COM4: because most applications don't use a such port. After that, you can configure your favorite Navigatin software to the selected Port. The Advantage: you can run multiple Application with simultaneously access to the GPS device through the Program Port.

Thanks BigE for the explanation!
Now i've another problem!
i've open a new post:

Can you give me some information about the problem or about a possible solution?
Thanks!

I would say you gps is not working cos your radio is not up to date I tried it with 1.16 and it would not work for me, I put on radio 1.46 and it worked fine on internal gps with tomtom 6 and other gps on tomtom 7

XDAII + TomTom2 + BT GPS = Slow?

I just purchased the Fortuna Clip_On Bluetooth Reciever for my XDAII. First install went fine, I set it all up and used it walking home from the station. The TomTom software worked faultlessly and was quick to use. When I got home I closed TomTom, turned off the GPS and put the XDAII on the charger. In the morning I opened TomTom to setup a trip to France. When I opened TomTom it was VERY slow. It took about 8mins to open the application and navigating around the software was impossible. It did not crash or give me any errors it was just real slow. I uninstalled the application and reinstalled it. This seemed to solve the situation temporarily and off I set on my journey. After the first leg of my Journey I turned it off whilst on the Ferry. Next time I turned it on it was back to snails pace and so rendered it useless for the rest of my journey.
Any ideas whats going on? Is this a common problem?

What type of card? sd/mmc?
what version xda roms
what other apps. e.g. GPRS mon is known to cause problems sometimes.
try tomtom 3, it's much faster / more reliable.
I'm using xda2(1.6) + sd +cf, tomtom 3.01 + fortuna gps without problems.
you need GPS driver version 2.09!!!
I had the same problem cause I was using driver version 2.00, then I moved to v2.09 and it worked perfectly.
Ciao
I tried last week TomTom3 + i-mate+ Royaltek BT GPS, I drove in the UK. Everything worked very good all the time.
I am using all the latest ROMS, with Bluetooth tools.
How can I check my BT driver version?
It is a 256 SD card (Viking Interworks)
Rom Version: 1.60.00WWE
ROM Date: 12/03/03
Radio Version: 1.10.00
Protocol Version: 1.337.18
ExtROM Version: 1.60.50
Not much else is installed, I am using 1-calc and the check/clear notifications app. Thats it
Where do I get the updated GPS Driver?
give me your email via pvt msg and I will send to you, ok?
I tried to post it in the forum, but no way.....
its ok i found it on pocketgps. However it has not solved the problem. I installed the GPS update, cold booted and the same problem exists
Any other ideas?
what i do not understand is why it would work perfectly for about 2 hours then just slow right down like this.
Have you set GPS connections to:
- TomTom Wireless GPS
- Bluetooth GPS
I have these settings in v2.09 GPS and it work perfectly with fortuna clip-on...
I repeat that I had the same identical problem as you have and I solved with 2.09 driver and the settings you see above...
good luck
oops, actually i just noticed its 2.07 i updated to.
How big is the 2.09 update?
I found the 2.09 update on the web, but its not solved anything
after the update it is still really slow

?????????????????? WHAT ABOUT YOUR SETTINGS ??????????????
GPS Connections? I'm not sure what you mean by this?
Under TomTom GPS I have it set to:
SiRF 38400
COM5
I have it unticked at the moment as I am just trying to get it working properly. The PDA Slider is set to Zzz and sound is on.
Under TomTom GPS I have it set to:
SiRF 38400
COM5

change to:
- TomTom Wireless GPS
- Bluetooth GPS
and see what happen... 99% you solve with this settings cause it was the same for me. TRY these settings, let fortuna and XDA2 communicate and that's it!
I don't want fortuna and xda2 to communicate. I want to be able to use create routes without the gps reciever connected. At the moment it takes about 5mins for TomTom to just launch.
i tried these settings and it is still slow, i timed 6mins to launch the application and a further 1min to open the menu.
what other apps?
Wizer,
What other apps do you have?
Have you tried hard reset + reinstall ? First backup with say sprite backup.
I think this is driver related. Uninstall tomtom then reinstall with the latest gps drivers, I am not sure you should be selecting sirf 38400 either.
i tried installing from clean install and i tried with the latest GPS drivers. Nothing solved it. In the end I have had to install tomtom3 which has strangely solved the problem for now. All I have to do now is find the Great Britain maps

TomTom 6.02 Freeze with trinity..

I've installed tha last ship ROM from DOPODAsia and sometimes my TomTom 6.02 will not respond to the touchscreen. I've to minimize it and then re-open in full screen and it will return to work.
mmmm... this rom is not very perfect IMHO
Tomtom 6.030
Hello
I have the same probleme with tomtom 6.030 and 6.010, 6.020 and 6.100
Perhaps htc rom will be corrige this probleme.
@++
on my side I have also tomtom 6
I have also a freeze but only during few seconds and only at the start of tomtom (during the 1st minute of usage of tomtom)
But for the moment I use tomtom without GPS ... just waiting for a new ROM
I also experienced these freezes with TomTom 6 and the latest official dopod image. So I downgraded to the latest test version which doesn't have this problem. Have quick fixes and both 6.02 and 6.03 are working fine. The only difference i noticed after installing 6.03 is that TomTom added a new GPS device called "built in gps receiver" which is now automatically selected. No probs here

Hello, initially had the latest test version of Dopod installed with TomTom 6.02 as GPS receiver I had chosen "other bluetooth receiver" and I used com 9 for this device in the settings ( just tapped with stylus on the black line in the gps settings, secon option) first fix took appr 6 min. Everthing went fine no freezes etc. I didnot have the gps reg hack nor did I have the gps icon in my settings. Everything went ok. After that I installed the official rom on monday just after its release. Installed the same TT6.02 same config. Then I became freezes too. So I installed 6.03 after that (on orig rom) with the settings for built in GPS receiver which is chosen automatically on Trinity btw. Same problems.
Which made me decide to go back to latest test rom, here i have now running TT6.03 which automatically puts the built in GPS receiver on COM9 & GPD1 (saw that after I performed the reg hack to get the GPS icon in my settings/access). Mostly i have the initial fix within 1 min! And absolutely NO freezes or slowing down in TT which I suffered with the official rom. So I suspect this official rom of some bugs because all other conditions in which i installed were the same.
Hope this will help. Btw I have a HTC P3600.
I have, on all occasions in which you can choose, installed TomTom6 on 1 GB minisdcard, nothing in PDA mem! Noticed that TT6.03 autom sets baudrate at 115200, but you can only see that after you perform the reg hack.
Just checked my rom that I use now, and see that it is not the latest version but it is version RUU_Trinity_DOPODASIA_WWE_1.23.707.2_6275_1.29.00.11_108_Test.exe.
Today i think i found out why my tom tom 6.030 sometimes hangs (if i quit and reenter tt everything works fine again).
So today I reinstalled my device at the office and also tomtom...
Came home from work and tt did not block any more...
Happy i transferred the radars to my device...
This evening i tested once again and it blocked again....
deleted my radars and warnings and it didn't block any more...
anyone who has the "application hanginging" problem: have u installed the radars...?
will do more testing the next days?

You may tried another memory card, cos i had the same problem with another device before ( also using tomtom 6, ) , then i just use another memory card, it work..
so after more tests I can definitely say that when I enable the poi and the warnings my Tomtom blocks....
if I disable them everything works fine....
I also tried with another minisdcard and another map...
the only thing I'm thinking of is that the radar poi are in some way corrupt?
just to throw another theory into the mix.....
I've been using tt6.01 on the original HTC wwe rom and now the lastest gps enabled rom, never had a lockup. Was just using the UK map.
Yesterday installed the complete western europe map, now get lockups when using this map. Switch back to UK and it's fine again.
I have also this problem. I press the green button, phone opens, i close it with my stylus.
After that TOM² opens, en it all works fine.
i've noticed the same like DREWY.
the last weeks i used only my germany-map. tomtom freezes only one time.
now i updated my tomtom an installed the germany-swiss-austria map.
now tomtom locks up very often.
my theory:
the maps are to big, an the trinity/tomtom can not handle this big maps.
More info about this "freezing" problem...
I've updated my spanish Trinity with the new/cooked english ROM... WITHOUT any problem working with TomTom 6.03 (radars activated, etc) using external (Bluetooth) GPS.
Working with the internal GPS... and with two miniSD different... a LOT of problems. It's impossible to run properly for more than 10 minutes. Not any problem using OZI, for example with any GPS (Bluetooth or the Internal one).
Somebody has tested it TomTom+internal GPS working with the french ROM (Orange one)?
Hello,
I use french Orange ROM on SPV M700 with internal GPS + TT6.100, the whole works fine since one month.
I use Western Europe map with traffic info activated.
Thank you Rahan for the info
I've just test my "New" french Trinity and NOW I don't have any problem with TomTom and the internal GPS
Probably, there was an instalation problem in my previous "english" Trinity. I'm going to restart from the beginning converting my "French" P3600 to an "english" one
---
The problem is the cooked ROM..because after installing it... TomTom DOESN'T WORK properly It works with Bluetooth GPS and with the Orange/french ROM (internal and external GPS)...but with this ROM (and with the GPS fix, etc)... NOT

TomTom receives weak GPS Signal

Hi,
I have a Trinity and I am using it with TomTom 6, newest version.
When I go out and use TomTom it finds the GPS signal but it shows that the signal is weak... only 2 bars, although at the same place with my Xda Orbit (HTC P3300) I had full signal... why is this so? different GPS chip?? which I think should not be the problem. or what else?
and does anyone know a software which can download the satellite data from internet?? xda orbit used to have one, but I do not remember the name...
Thanks to you all
Reza
You shouldn't be seeing such a difference in genuine signal levels- does it take longer to get a fix on your Trinity? It may be that TTN is misreporting the signal level, or you may have an antenna problem. If the fix times are similar, you may not have a real problem.
Have you tried a GPS app with a more comprehensive display of signal levels?
The Orbit does use the slightly better 12 channel SIRFStar III chip than the Trinity's 8 Channel Qualcomm chip, but comparative tests have shown little 'real world' difference- maybe a couple of minutes better TTFF on the Orbit.
The Orbit can use a program called QuickGPS which uses the phones cell info to give a location, which then downloads satellite data from HTC's website. Although the facility is built into the Trinity (A-GPS) there is as yet no software which implements it.
well actually it finds the satellite signals quite fast. I have no other program, only GPStuner... I will try that one too.
Thanks for your help

hi everybody .... for some reason it is working fine now. I had changed the GPS receiver from built-in to the other option (NMEA GPS) with the setting (COM9, 115200 Baud) and then it worked fine. Then I changed the settings back to internal GPS Receiver ... now it is working good ...

Hi all,
I recently purchased a P6500 and I installed Igo 8.When I enter the gps config menu it says that gps could not be found;if i hit the auto search button the device freezes.
I installed Port splitter 1.11 and I managed to gain something...the device doesn't freeze anymore but it still can not find the gps.I have no idea how to set up the com ports....the program port..the hardware port..I am confused...
(I also inst. Igo 2006 and works ok.)
I appreciate any help!!

Hi, Xman -- I don't know this software and so probably can't really offer anything helpful. For what it's worth, the GPS seems to work fine on my P6500: both with Google Maps and with GPS-enabled photos on the HTC Camera app. Does your GPS work with those programs?
Sorry about your troubles!
Alan
I didn't try with Google maps because I'm interested in making Igo work .
At list tell me an app which can show me some info about the internal gps such as speed /the com port on which it's installed etc..
Thanks
Problem solved!!!!!!!
Solution? GPS Gate
I have also noticed the same problem running both IGO-2006 and I-GO 2008 on my 6500,on the other hand i have had no trouble whatsoever running Destinator 7 and Garmin ,i guess it's got something to do with the software and not the PPC itself which i must say has a very good GPS receiver.
Edit
Thanks for the GPS-gate idea.

Hey Xman556,
it is a crack one at the moment untill I can get it to work properly then I'll buy it if not I'll just leave it.
The way I can get it to work is like this I start the iGo8 then I go to settings TMC and dp a search if return as no hardware fined then I go to GPS and put in the com port 4 and the speed 57800 and it work but if I do a soft rest the iGo8 well not work anymore until I change the GPS port in the PDA to a diffrent port like port 8 then the Igo8 well star and I have to do everything I did before go to TMC and so on if I try to go straight to the GPS without going to the TMC the system hang and I have to do a soft rest this is the way I got it working I'm using the version 4.1.506 if the Igo I tried the earlier version and it is the same problem I need a solution better than this.
Thank You
Gigino
As far as I see the problem is that the cracked Igo is not able to start the internal gps.
Here my new solution..this time is really working !!!
GPS TEST from chartcross...i start this program .it starts the gps then menu/minimize and after i start the igo.
Tell me if it works for u.

I had this problem with I-go at first. When first installed selecting the gps port and or baud rate would lock the phone. Also if you did an auto detect it would also lock the phone. Solution, have gpsdash or google navigator running with the gps enabled (or anything else that works with the internal gps it seems). Without stopping the app start I-go and it will find and use the gps quite nicely.
Once it has done this the first time I never had to run anything else before I-go even after a reset. Tried this several times by fully reseting the 6500 and worked every time.
similar GPS problems with HTC P6500 and iGo
Hi all,
I'm writing from Germany and have similar problems with iGo 2006+ and iGo 8.
(I purchased iGo 8 just yesterday)
My (German) settings:
Settings --> System --> External GPS -->
Tab Program?:
COM4 for internal GPS, no external GPS via Bluetooth (see Attachment)
Tab Access?:
manage GPS automaticly: ON
What are your GPS settings?
- - -
What I have discovered:
- 1st starting iGo 2006+ and iGo8: both applications hang during 'starting'
- With Igo 2006+ I tried: 1st starting the app 'GPS Tuner', then starting iGo
--> It starts and iGo finds GPS on Com4 with maximum baud
(now I don' t have any longer 'GPS Tuner')
- With iGo8 I tried starting the freeware 'VisualGPSce' 1st (until GPS fix), then starting iGo8 --> It starts, I could set COM4, maximum baud...
--> so I think, is is an internal iGo/GPS-problem
- Today I could drive about 10 km with Igo8, then it crashes without any msg
You can see, I have similar probs, did u solve the probs meanwhile?

Rainer from Germany
cracked igo works fine on Sedna. from SD or InternalFlash.
I´m using GPSGATE.
Start GPSGATE, best automatically after reboot.
this will start the internal GPS.
Now you have 2 possibilities.
1. use the output port of GPSGATE, maybe Virtual Com1. You can select it in the options from GPSGATE
or
2. use Com4 from internal GPS. once startet from GPSGATE, it works.
you have to edit your sys.txt in folder programs....igo8
[gps]
port="1" or "4"
baud="38400"
it works definitly

After trying all kinds of programs(GPS port spliter, gps gate and gps test) I found that the solution with gpstest is the best.So I decided to perform a hard reset in order to install on my device only the useful software. But after the hard reset the gps would not start no matter what programs I installed. So I sent the device to HTC and they replaced the mainboard.
Now the IGO8 works perfect(together with GPSTEST-pls see my earlier posts).
GPS Text script
I too found GPSTest.exe useful because its really small.
Strange that iGo hangs when trying to communicate over the port *unless* you start another program and open up the GPS unit's port.
Sounds a lot like PPC/iGo GPS management issue.
Be that as it may, I created a script with MortScript, and then put this shortcut under my programs in "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" on my PPC (I'm running WM 6.1 if you care).
The following script opens GPSTest.exe, launches iGo, then closes GPSText.exe after iGo shuts down;
iGoLaunch.mscr:
Code:
#OPEN GpsText.exe minimized
Run ("\Storage Card\Program Files\Chartcross\GPSTest\Bin\GPSTest.exe")
WaitForActive ("GPS Test", 5000)
Minimize ("GPS Test")
#Run (and wait until iGo closes)
RunWait ("\Program Files\iGO8\iGO8.exe")
#Close GpsText.exe
Kill ("\Storage Card\Program Files\Chartcross\GPSTest\Bin\GPSTest.exe")
After creating iGoLaunch.mscr, put this link (use notepad) into "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"
iGo 8 GPS.lnk:
Code:
1#"\Storage Card\iGo8\iGoLaunch.mscr"?\Program Files\iGO8\iGO8.exe, -101
Please note: If you decide to use this script and shortcut, I highly suggest you check the paths/filenames for accuracy.
GPS and WM 6.1 upgrade
Hey guys -- this may well not be relevant to the issues you're dealing with -- I don't use iGo -- but there is a HUGE improvement in GPS reception with the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade. My Sedna used to have a very difficult time getting GPS reception: it often could not find a signal despite repeated attempts. But since the upgrade, it's been locking on quickly and consistently.
Thought I'd pass this on in case it's helpful.

very simple script
once the GPS is initialized for the first time it will work
I've wrote a script for MortScript. The only code is:
WriteFile( "COM4:",x )
This script only sends something (here x) to COM4.
Then COM4 is used for the first time and will keep on working.
I start this script in autostart.
That's all.
Please regard uppercase and colons when writing "COM4:"

Solution for port splitter
You can use port splitter for your gps. here is the process i went through with my HTC (jade). first i used gps gate and figured out that the internal gps is using com4. since gpsgate is not free and had to stop using it I tried port splitter
simply install port splitter on your pda
under INPUT-> PORT: com4 and Baud: 4800 (you might have to type COM4 yourself)
under OUTPUT-> select com1 on the drop down menu and press ADD
then press Start Splitter
and it should work
if not install gpsgate and figure out what port it is using and than use port splitter.
This should save you some money

GPS problem after ROM upgrade

Hi
I just flashing my cruise with the new official HTC Rom(French).
Now my gps won't work anymore. Everytime i setup my GPS port(com1-com9)in parameter "External GPS", the parameter are not saved.
Tomtom say: "no GPS device"
any idea
Thanks
PS: sorry for my bad english!!!
After flashing always make a HARD reset ( push gps button and explorer button and reset button with stylus then push green button 2 times ) and it 'll solve all your probleme
Thanks
but i does not change anything.
I just perform a hard reset and always unable to save my gps port parameters.
any other idea?
Your gps doesn't work or you can't save the port on windows gps settings?
i can't save the hardware port on windows gps settings
Why do you want to save it , when you launch tomtom/igo they found the gps automaticaly and it works fine.
There might be a problem with the settings in "External GPS" (under "connections" menu).
In my case it shows COM4 (programs tab) / (none) (hardware tab) / Manage GPS automatically (access tab)
And ofcourse both Tomtom and IGO8 are configured to use COM4.
if i am not configuring the GPS com port, tomtom are not able to find GPS device: "No GPS device found"
I try "Integrated GPS Device" and " GPS NMEA" with the same result.
I use TomTom 7.450.9028
I also use TomTom 7.450.9028 (and iGO8) with no problems........
My device is configured to use programs => COM4, hardware => (none) as I told you. Sorry if I can't help you more than this.........
i try the same parameter as you... and it works!!!
thanks
Nice to have helped you!

Radio 1.59.42.15 seems to play havoc with Destinator
After upgrading a Polaris to the most recent HTC Official WM6.1 ROM (Portuguese) I started having problems with Destinator 7.
The device detects the GPS signal and then loses it every 20 seconds or so. If you go back to the GPS settings in Destinator, you see that the GPS Antenna is OK, with 7 or satellites, and then you go back to the map and it works for a while (another 20s) before it loses GPS signal again.
I tested this on 3 HTC Cruise and it is always the same.
I tried upgrading the radio but that didnt work because Radio 1.64.xx.xx doesnt seem to work on this ROM (no sound on calls, poor GSM/3G reception).
I also tried Radio 1.58.21.23, and that still gives me problems with GSM/3G.
Here is the info on the HTC ROM
R 1.59.42.15
G 25.69.30.05H
D 3.13.00.00
Has anyone been through this and found a way out?
Thanks
Andre
Did you try this Radio Rom?

It seems to be a better/newer one
Tried the ROM but
Scotty, thanks for the suggestion - that didn´t help, though.
Now, here´s the funny part: I decided to use Destinator 6 and guess what? It worked like a charm: 8 satellites in 30s, no loss of signal. Go figure!
Destinator 7 works on all other HTC devices and used to work on the BetaPortuguese ROM I had. I don´t really understand why the radio messes up with GPS so much. Still, I´m glad I found a solution.
Thank you for the support!
