Screen Alignment Madness - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I've got an HTC Wizard that has a deadspot about 4 pixels in diameter at the exact center of the screen. This is no big deal, except when I flash the phone, and have to go thru the screen alignment part of starting to use the new OS. The dead spot is exactly under the center of the center alignment cross, so it takes forever to get the thing to pass this phase, and I'm always a few pixels away from exactly where I want to tap-n-touch.
Is there a way to bypass this, and accept a default alignment of the touch screen, or 3rd party alignment program that let's me only do the 4 corners?
edit: I tried the Code Factory Remote Alignment program, and it would retrieve settings but not do a remote alignment, it hung, or crashed each time I tried it.

This is a new wrinkle on the long list of HTC devices with a problem with screen alignment. Most are not about dead pixels, but given that the need to realign the screen on a lot of devices in the HTC stable on a regular basis, and the Wizard being one of them, even if you find a solution to your problem it's probably just a matter of time before you'll need to use it frequently. So hopefully your fix is easy to perform. My Wizard is becoming increasingly flaky and so I've ordered something to replace it. Good luck with yours.

Help! Stuck on Align Screen!

Guys, I hope you can help me!
I was using my Imate Jasjar when it was accidentally bumped by another person. the Jasjar fell but it wasn't that high and the floor was carpetted. However, I noticed that whenever i try to tap on the Start button on landscape mode, the calendar application opens up! And when I try to tap V-Bar on the other corner opposite the Start button, the Contacts application opens up. Basically, the soft keys on the bottom screen are the one opening up even if I'm tapping the ones on top! If I tap the bottom soft keys, I thought the Start button or my V-bar would come out but still the Calendar and Contacts applications were the ones that opened. Basically the everything on top cannot be tapped!
On Portrait mode, I can tap the start button but when the V-Bar was tapped it still opens the Contacts application.
I went to Settings then Screen to re-align the screen. I thought it would solve the problem but apparently it didn't! I was trapped in the Align Screen section giving me an endless loop to tap the 5 areas of the screen.
I now did a Hard Reset, and now I'm forever got stucked to the Align Screen part.
What am I supposed to do??? Please help!!!
Hi,
Seen the same problem... Try to guess the error margin of the alignment...
for example instead of tapping in the center of the cross try tapping on left or right... Since your screen isn't aligned you can't press on the center...
Now the problem is hardware, not the MB but the LCD...
After tou figure out the margin error, the Universal will resume and then you ca align the screen via Start->Settings->System, align screen
I'll try to know more about this problem asking my friend.
Best of luck
thanks for your reply!
i also believe that it has something to do with the LCD. there are no cracks whatsoever. problem with the aligning is i have to keep on guessing. and if ever i do align the screen successfully, i'm not sure if re-aligning the screen in Settings would solve the problem.
i would appreciate though if your friend or anybody else can shed light to a solution.
This is a simple problem to solve ;-)
When the allign screen is ON and you have to make the first tap on the crosshair (just before you start clicking away to allign your screen), twist your display from landscape to portrait mode...
Now continue to allign it as usual, and you should finish successfully!
Cheers,
San
unfortunately, after following your instructions, i still went on an endless loop on aligning the screen. i'll try to reflash the rom and see if it would work. i hope it does...
i updated my ROM. still stuck on the alignment screen!
any more ideas?
To be honest, sounds like your screen is broke. Even if you got it to align, I doubt it would be very usable. I think you are looking at repair - if there's no visible sign of damage, you might get away with a warranty repair.
Cheers,
Steve.
Hi
Few months back i've got exactly the same problems (odd LCD behavior, impossible alignment, etc...) with an HP4700. I went to the service center and they had to replace the LCD screen. They did not charge me and take it under warranty. In my case the unit did not drop and i made it clear to them. I would suggest you go back to the service center and forget about the drop in your problem description .
Cheers,
Bruno
I had the same thing happen on a HP 3700, I did not even drop it all i did was install the Quake game for it and after a few days the screen alignment went a bit out. It was usable but definately out by about 1 cm in each direction. The unit had not been dropped. I went into the allign screen utillity and ended up in the infinite loop. The only way to fix was a new screen. But unforunately it was no longer under warranty. The screen consists of 2 separate parts the lcd and the touch screen bit. In my case the lcd had no issues just the touch screen. Very annoying but there you go.
Search your soul and do what you feel comfortable with.
Good luck
Charlie
thanks for all your replies!
i've made several searches yesterday with similar problems (even if they're using different PPC models) and they all ended up sending back their units for repair. there's even one who posted in expansys with the same exact problem!
we'll be sending it back through expansys (we got the unit from them) and hopefully get it back before the end of the month. and yes, i won't tell them that it was dropped, he he  and they won't find evidence either on the outside because there are no physical damages. what a start of the new year for me <sigh>
right now i'm back using my XDA IIi.
thanks for all your support! this is my first thread/topic in this site and it's so unfortunate that it had to be sort of a negative one. looking forward to be active more here!
Hello there
This might help (I am currently wrking with 200 PDAs so have had this a few times)
THere may be a iece of dust/biscuit crumb etc, under the edge of the casing above the screen, try using a post it note or paper and go around the casing/edge of screen, this should clear the screen of anything that may be causing this problem.
THis worked for me on the majority of non-aligning screens

My story was, one day when I needed to twist the screen, it was a bit stuck so I twisted a bit harder, yes it went back. Then few days later, the mis-alignment started and since then I have been keeping to do re-alignment my screen.
My screen is mis-aligned once every 2 or 3 days or even few minutes then I have to re-align by using WM5's alignment program. It sometimes takes me 2 or 3 times or even one time.
The most anoying thing is it keeps forget after aligned screen.
Now, certainty, I don't think it is a screen problem because after running alignment app, it correctly pointed into the right spot but then it forgot where the right position was.
I have done the upgraded ROM ( even tried Ivan AKU 3.2 ROM ) but problem still persisted.
I just tried clean up the edge of screen, finger cross, hope it fixes my problem.
Bad thing is, I bought my device from UK and I am living in Australia so therefore, my warranty is definately invalid. I don't want to spend 200 AUD for the new screen ( unless I am 100% sure that LCD is faulty ).
Anyone has any idea or even a better suggestion because I don't see many people having this problem.
I suspects that maybe the flex cable got ripped but not totally ripped. Don't know , please help me out on this one
Best regards
Anyone has any idea about my problem ??
One question :
I know that the flex cable has 2 connectors ( one is for LCD display and another is for LCD function ). Now does LCD function relate to the touch screen function ? and if one tiny wire of the function cable got cracked, but not totally cracked, will it affect the touch screen function ?
Other thing, does WM5 store any setting relating to screen alignment setting ? If yes, where is it ?
Thanks
Hi, from another forum, it only help to bypass the alignement loop:
"here you go theses are simple steps to bypass the touchscreen alignment.
Install you activesyn blah blah blah when it finds it go on my computer and go into your PDA device
go to windows startup and delete the Welcome file
after that give your PPC a soft reset and BAM u by passed the screen now get a free desktop program liek pocket controller from the internet it will automatically install on your pda and BAM you can control your pda add music and whatever
but now if you want to click stuff on the road get pen irazu just search on google and send it to your PDA then go to file explorer and double click it and you got a cute little mouse program that you can use like a stylus"
also try this little soft:

Hope it helps.

Hi godtakeit!
I've had the same problem a few weeks ago (and still having it from time to time) and for me a slight (very careful) bending of the screen makes it work again. It seems to me that there are connector behind or near the display which has some loose contacts.
Did you notice any other problems which came in conjuction with the alignment problem (e.g. speaker not working)?
.ox
Hi oxident
No, I don't have problem with speaker ( it was not working before but it is because of the jack plug problem - it solved ). Yeah, I did notice if I bend the screen carefully, the problem is gone. The funny thing is when I aligned the screen, it worked but if I closed it off and left it over night, it started again when I opened the lid.
You may right about the connector between LCD screen and mainboard. Well, I have no choice but openning the device and check it up.
Also, I read the thread somewhere in this forum and somebody advised this problem maybe relates to magnet around device. My brother aslo advised me that LCD charged and reserved negative electrons. Wierd but I am experiment it at the moment ( taking off battery and leave the device for a few days so that it can release the negative electrons ).
Hope it fixes
please help

Good luck,

help. My screen keeps misaligning very often.

My touch screen has been getting out of alignment quite often. 3 or 4 times a day. I'll go to use it after leaving it on standby, and the touch screen alignment will be off by a half centimeter or more. its making very difficult to use. Sometimes very difficult to even get to the settings screen to realign it. I'm using a screen protector and to use my fingers instead of the stylus often. could have of this be having an affect? or does anyone have any idea whats goign on? thank you for any help you can give me.
Dan
I had a similar problem as well. Its kinda scary. Do you think its a software error? or could it be hardware *gulp*
I had this problem with some devices I issued out at work. I put screen protectors on them, and all kind of weirdness happened, and the screen getting out of alignment was one of them. I removed the screen protectors, and the problem went away.
Wizard platform has often that claim from many users. I'm not sure if working without screen protector is suitable for you and don't know it will help. In my case it did not.
The problem of kJAMs is related to the screens HTC used on this version. Unfortunately there is not software remedy. Some users attempted to change their devices under guarantee. Some are telling newer ROMs make the error less frequently.
You may also use "fire button + messaging button" combination as a shortcut to screen alignment page if you must live with this. Better than nothing ?!
fixed my qtek 9100
Well my wizard used to go out of alignment a lot. But I basically ruined it when I stuck it in my golf bag one day and let it get partially crushed while half-open...
The screen started to flicker a lot (in addition to not registering touch inputs). after a week it was unusable except by me since I knew where to push to get it to work.
Anyways, I gave up and asked around Hong Kong for people who can fix these PDAs. I found a store that offered to bring it to a specialist (no name given) for $380 hkd (~$50USD). Figured I had nothing to lose.
It actually works almost like new now. The slider is tighter, and the screen doesn't go out of alignment at all. I'd almost say its perfect except the "specialist" "broke" my volume slider when fixing it. Its not major so I decided against taking it back to the store for further repairs (3 month warranty on their work). But it took 3-4 days for them to fix.
I figure someone with the screwdrivers and stuff can probably fix your problem. But I didn't have the guts to try it myself...
Four things you can do to help
1. After time dust etc... gets under the rim of the screen and adds to the misalignment problem. Get a piece of paper and put the corner under the rim and get all the dirt out.
2. Sometimes software causes the misalignment - in my case it was using vjtoggletoday - so check or your software particular ones that change your today screen e.g. wisbar etc...
3. You could do a hard reset and try device in factory state for a while to see if it is a software or hard ware problem
4. Update to the latest rom.
Thanks for your help guys. Even though i didn't like your answers. I tried cleaning dust from under the border of the screen. It worked well for now. but it hasn't been more than 12 hours. I hope it continues. If i cant get it to stop i might have to sell my phone on ebay. they seem to go for only 50 dollars less on ebay than i payed for it in the first place. I hate to ask this question. but what could i replace this phone wiht that wont have this problem. and has windows? Basically what would you suggest as a replacement. And not the TytTn because i dont think i'll be able to afford that one.
Thank you.
lets hope that i dont have to fish dust out of my phone every day.

Screen Accuracy Problems

The touchscreen on my titan is acting very problematically, with the screen slowly getting more and more inaccurate to touchscreen inputs, it's getting to the point where i have to use align screen 3+ times per day, and it's incredibly upsetting, is there any fix for this, or is it a hardware problem?
I'm not sure what it is but I too had that problem. After I flashed to DCD's 3.0.1 ROM,, the screen seems to be more stable. I still have to align screen every now and then. Do you you use your finger instead of the stylus? Sounds weird but I do that a lot and that might contribute to the problem.
Yeah, I do use my fingers on the screen a bit, with PointUI's Home, I don't see how that could cause it though o.o.
My I760 did that on two different phones. So i just got the xv6800, no problems yet except the ****ty video drivers-Or lack there of.
Okay, at this point the screen is going nuts, I'm probably going to have to send it off to sprint for a replacement at this point, as within 20 seconds of aligning the screen it's off by a good 5mm, and that number keeps rising.
Is you screen dirty? Along with using my fingers, my screen was dirty also. I just used a dry towel and clean the screen by blowing hot breath on it. Also, I bought new screen protectors. Yes it does seem odd that using my stylus and having a clean screen helped with my problem. Maybe my new ROM fixed the problem, I don't know. But its not as bad as it was before. Good luck.
Yeah, my problem was getting exponentially worse, off by about 6mm or so every time I'd align the screen, so I just returned it on my insurance plan.
Stylus vs Finger
If you are aligning your screen using the stylus and then using your finger for gestures and such the screen response is not aligned. You have to align with your finger in order to get a more accurate response because your finger covers so much more area than that tiny stylus tip.
I would alternate back and forth between the two, but to give an example of how severe the problem was getting, I would align the screen (with stylus) launch a program, and -already- the screen would respond about 4-5 millimeters down and 2-3 millimeters to the right of the stylus, which would make various tasks nigh-impossible.
I had the same issue and notice that it was mainly due to the fact that my screen was dirty as mentioned before. Sometimes you may even notice that your screen may not be dirty but remember that oils from our fingers and especially our ears when we talk can cause the alignment issues. Perhaps you can even change the screen protector and see if this helps. This should fix all of your issues assuming it is not an actual software problem. The one time that I did find the alignment to be a software issue, all I had to do to fix it was to callibrate the screen in both standard and panoramic view. I hope this helps...
Nah, it wasn't that, I tried cleaning off the screen with a microfiber cleaning cloth and everything, even removed the screen protector to see if that was causing it, it was a hardware defect.
Well I can say this.. I used to work for Sprint, Nextell, Verison, and ATT at various points. I know that with more of them, they usually send you out another device and you send your back. The think I love about ATT is that they will do this with a No Questions Asked policy except for the standard one involving abuse, water damage ect. After 3 defective devices, they will automatically upgrade you to another device.... Please make sure that the reasons are lagitimate so that this policy does not change but if you need to go through the hoops to get a better device that works.... Have at it. Do not take it to a store unless directed by the telephone people. Many people feel like they are techs because they own a ppc of some sort but they are not the ones that make the ultimate call. Let the corperate people make the decisions. Once you receive your device, immediately stress test it with all of the things that you will be doing with your device. Load and unload software, ect to make sure it works. If ther eis an issue, it ie better to notify them within the first 72 hours. I hope this helps again.

Very local SA problem (different from the known SA issues)

I have a HTC TyTN (HERM200), serial HT628xxx.
I'm familiar with the screen alignment problems that have been posted a lot, so let me first say that I have a different problem.
My screen has a very local alignment problem on just 1 spot.
If you look at the first added screenshot, I was drawing a horizontal line there. Note the strange curve it makes at a certain point.
On the second screenshot, I pinpointed the bad spot trying to make a dot there. Note it's drawing a circle around the bad spot instead.
Of course I tried things like a hard reset already, realignment of the screen, and even different ROMs.
And also the business card solution for the other SA problems.
But it didn't help.
I didn't send it to HTC yet, because it's out of warranty and I don't feel like a huge repair bill at the moment since I have a newer device in use at the moment anyway.
But still wondering, is there anything that can be done by myself, or is my screen really broken?
You have two deformities on your digitizer layer, can also be caused by a contaminant between digitizer and screen.
On the above picture the deformities are at the peak and the trough of the line shown. Sometimes, not always you will be able to see small dents at the deformities location.
When you tap between these two points the screen will touch off and on at the deformities first.
You can artificially recreate this phenomenon by using the notes program. If you sequentially tap the screen with two fingernails and then tap with the stylus on a different part of the screen you will (with a bit of practice!!) be able to create a circular shape well away from where you are touching with the stylus.
There is no practical solution other than replacing the screen/digitizer combo.

Thanks for the clear explanation.
I guess I'll go inform at my dealer about the costs of replacement then.

[Q] Wandering screen alignment??

Hi all,
My trusty blackstone has begin letting me down and I don't know if flashing a new rom will help, or if it is something physical that is breaking / broken. I'm using the Stonehenge ROM with CHT and everything has been fine for months.
Recently the touch screen allignment just seems to 'wander' sometimes just a little, other times quite a lot (so much that using the fake hardware buttons at the bottom of the phone, brings up the start menu). This means that intermittently I cannot answer calls, and typing a message on the SIP is an absolute nightmare!
The start menu icons do not seem to be as affected as the home screen and CHT, and I can quite easily get to the phone settings and recalibrate the screen - this will help for a short while but the alignment drifts again.
Restarting the phone has a temporary positive effect but it doesn't last.
Anyone else experienced this?
I have exactly the same problem.
Dissembled the whole device, blown some hot air but didn't help. Seems it's a HW fault. But I have a doubt whether the problem is in digitizer or in control board.
It's definitely one of the more frustrating problems that I've ever had with the phone.
I might try flash a new ROM then give up if that doesn't work. At least I won't be tempted to disassemble as it has already been tried, tbh I'd have just tried the tin of compressed air too, I don't trust my soldering skills for tiny electronics.
It is getting progressively worse, the touch area of the screen has slipped so low now that I can't use half the screen.
