Display doesn't automatically timeout. - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I noticed a few weeks ago that my display stopped turning off automatically. The backlight turns of but the phone remains on and drains the battery. I have set the timeout to two minutes in settings -> power -> advanced (tab) on battery power and 5 minutes on external but it does not seem to mind these settings.
So I have to remember to hit power after I am done using the phone or my battery dies. This seems like a registry issue. I have searched around for an answer but I haven't found one.
I an running
ROM version: Pro BLACK 2.5
Radio version: 1.41.00.10
Protocol version: 32.74.7020.18H
I also tried hard resetting but that did not help. Any help would be much appreciated.

if you hard resetted then it can't be a registry thing, as that gets wiped along with everything else at a hard reset

Ok... So what else could it be? Any one else run into this problem?

My Jamin just slept to Death...

Had it at about 70% battery (around) last night, after 12 hours or so today, it refused to turn on.
I got it to turn on finally with a soft reset, and the battery showed 28%!!
I have no idea how it could have run down so fast, though it could have been something I left on (maybe wifi?).
I'm still surprised it would refuse to turn on at 28% though...
My Dopod 818 Pro is having this problem ever since I bought it. If I turn off the screen using the power switch or let it go to standby automatically, most of this time I can't turn it on again and have to do a soft reset.
I do not see a lot of Dopod users complaining about this problem so I am wondering if I have a faulty set. Other than this problem, everything else works fine.
i'm having the same problem. Do you think there will be a rom fix?
I just found an interesting observation regarding this sleep-to-death (STD) issue. If I left my Dopod overnight and got the STD problem the next day, the battery had drained considerably. It was fully charged the night before, but after 8 hours, the battery is only at 40 percent.
But since more than one person is having this issue, is it still a hardware problem?
This is not a hardware issue, its more like an unoptimised ROM issue. I suppose it will be fixed with an update in the future.
Leaving WiFi on does not matter because your device automatically goes into standby mode after a pre-defined time (3 minutes by default). In that case, even if you leave 10 apps running in the background, it won't make a difference for the aforementioned reason.
With the HTC Universal, what happened was that people would leave apps running in the background and once they are done using the device, they would just close the device thinking that it would shut off, but it wouldn't because the standy-mode was disabled by most people to get a snappier device. In such a situation, battery would drain rapidly overnight as the device hasn't gone into standby mode.
This situation will occur on the JAMin too IF there is no default standy-by mode set.
I have an HTC Universal (O2 XDA EXEC) and had the same thing happen to me two nights in a row. The battery was at 100% when i went to bed and i woke up and realized i was late as the alarm i had set didnt wake me up.
I had to soft reset the phone and the battery was down to 24% and then the alarm starting going off, a bit late though. I have had this phone for three days, and im not happy about this failing twice on me.
The only thing i have changed is running a coporate install (0506) so that o2 active wasnt on the phone.
Is there any fix for this??
Rom version: 1.13.82 WWE
Radio version: 1.04.02
Protocol version: 42.37.P8
ExtROM version 1.13.188 WWE
Go to Settings>System>Power and check the "switch off device after x minutes" option. By default it is 3 minutes, but i have set it to one minute as that serves my purpose. You will notice the drastic difference immediately .
It kind of sounds like an issue I've seen on my m600. It's a wm5 bug where activesync will try to connect all the time, randomly, even if your device is off. It can cause STD (sleep to death) and will. It's a simple fix. Just install the autosyncschedule.cpf and run it. It's a simple little .cab that will change some settings. Hope it helps

If that link to my yahoo briefcase doesn't work, you can get this file at eten-users.net in the download section under /utilities/wm5. It solved all STD's with the eten and so far with my jamin. 8)
You can also fix the Active Sync bug manually.
To do so open ActiveSync on your WM5 device and tap on Menu>Add Server Source. Add any info to create a fake server sync. After that is complete go to Menu>Schedule and change the two dropdowns to "Manual" and tap "ok" at the top right.
Slept to death- I've sussed out why my device was doing this
I had an SD card from my i-mate Jam inserted, and after taking this out, the situation stopped happening. So if you've got an SD card in try running the device without for a while to see if that helps...

I had the same problem using the same ROM. It first worked like a charm, but than suddenly this started to happen.
Finally I upgrade tot the latest Dutch TMO Rom (2.21.2.5.NLD) and now everythinh is ok again.
Sorry I can't be of more help
I've got exactly the same problem on my XDA mini-s only I'm using the BT Rom from their website, I'm begining to wonder if an Application we're running is causing the problem such as: -
Phone alarm
Pocket Music
Tom Tom
Resco file Explorer
Pocket TV
GPS Dash
SPB Backup
Any similarities?
For me it seems SPB Backup causes this problem. After reinstalling a backup this 10 seconds thing appears all the time.
Same issue...
I had the same issue, posted a thread....

There are a few comments, including one that alluded to a hardware issue, but I did not get it resolved. Any other comments are welcomed.
just to get this topic up again.
I also have the same problem ans also after an automated backup (weekly) using SPB backup.
I restored an older file from SPB backup and I do not have the problem any more. It seems that this happened when the scheduled backup was used.
I think this is no longer an SPB Backup problem as there are others here and on the other post that are not using SPB backup and are still getting the same problem.
My ROM Version is 2.21.4.1 WWE
ROM Date 9th March 06
Radio Version 02.07.10
Protocol Version 413.1.03
EXT ROM Version 2.21.4.101
There must be somebody out there who understands what happens when you select "device locked" that is causing this to happen!
The device lock feature causes this bug.
If you don't want it to do that any more you have to do 2 things.
1) Turn off device lock
2) Change the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Backlight\Locklevel\
Change the "LockLevel" value to "0".
Then your phone will remember your backlight settings again. 8)
I had the same problem. But i did an upgrade to the dutch rom.
I did not have the device lock on so I don't know if that may be the problem.
There are a lot of this tiny little problems on my phone. but I always try new stuf on it, so I hard reset and reinstal very often. (Not restore from backup)
Gldrush98, you are an absolute STAR! I followed your instructions and now the backlight stays on for 1 minute as per the unlocked settings and 10 secs when it is set to locked.....Perfect many thanks.
No problem man, glad it worked. I had that problem too and I know how absolutely madning that bug can be! I don't know why they didn't fix this bug in the 2.2 roms.

Problem with Backlight timers

Hi guys,
I setup when my JASJAM running on battery, to turn off backlight when the device is not used for 1 minutes.
When the device turn off backlight after 1 minutes, and i turn on it, and check the settings i see that there is a new value set - 10 sec.
Can someone help me, which registry value i need to change.
BR
This problem is purly with the rom you are using. I tried changing this when i installed the beta version of AKU 3.5 Rom and it wouldnt work, even after setting it in the registry! Everytime the device turns off it just resets to 10 secs....very annoying!
2 options.... Flash it, or live with it.
It has been reported that add on programs cause a conflict with the operating system. This results in the backlight defaulting to ten seconds. (With WM5, default is set at thirty seconds.) To remedy situation you can remove, one by one, any programs that you have loaded onto your PPC to find the offender.
I resolved this problem with a hard reset and it hasn't recurred so far.

Backlight turns off after 10sec

Here is my trouble:
When I change the backlight timeout to 30sec in the GUI under the Backlight, Battery Power tab, it resets back to the 10sec default after power cycling the 8525.
I do have an HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Backlight/BatteryTimeout that changes from 7 (Value Data) to 30, when I change the GUI as mentioned above. However it doesn't stick, and changes back after a power cycle.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
motsf
Registry changes aren't realtime. If you're resetting the device too soon, the change won't take.
Wait a few minutes after making the change before you power down or reset or try to change it again.

I've changed the setting in the GUI & in the registry in the morning, and at around 14hrs later, reset it, and it still changes back to the 10sec default.
Any other idea's?
Thanks,
Steve

Are there any other updates/solutions to this backlight resetting problem? Mine started doing it after a hard reset and it's driving me nuts. I've changed the same registry settings as suggested above, but no effect.
I don't want to hard reset again as it was a major pain to get things going on my 8525 again and I really don't want to uninstall a bunch of programs (I have a ton on mine).
If worse comes to worse, I'll wait for the official AT&T WM6 update to come out next month, but I'd like to see if there's any other solution for now.
Thanks!
JEFF
I think I found something. The backlight timeout stays set until I lock the phone using the today plugin. As soon as I do that, the 10sec timeout is reactivated.
I'm running VP3Gs V3
I've gone for the easy option, given that I don't fancy either uninstalling applications 1 by 1 until I find the culprit or having to hard reset and rebuild the device all over again.
That option is to disable the backlight turn-off setting and manually do it myself after using the device.

It appears that you are right. The "device lock" today plug in does not appear to re-enable the black light turn-off setting if it is off. If it is on, it does change it to 10sec through. Good to know.

Backlight problem

Hi, I have a fairly new problem with my fantastic HD2.
When I plug it into my PC via USB, the backlight dims after the set 30 seconds, but it will not turn off altogether after the set time (1 or 2 minutes).
I've tried everything. I definitely have the backlight settings correct, but no matter what I do, cleaning RAM, whatever, it only dims but will not turn off. It used to turn off, but stopped doing so about a week ago.
Around that time I installed Co0kie's Home Tab 1.7.1 and thought that might be the problem, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled it, same problem and I don't think it's the cause. All the settings in the CHT Editor are OK too, I think.
Can anyone help? Maybe I could alter the registry setting directly, and if so could someone please tell me what it is?
Many thanks,
David
