Installing Linux on Universal - Help! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hello everyone,
First of all I would like to thank you all for the great job you are doing here.
I have one problem and 2 questions:
I'm trying to install linux on Jasjar (Universal) and I'm following this tutorial:
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/UniversalHowtoInstallLinux
After the log-in part, and after doing the following:
fdisk /dev/mmc/blk0/disc
I got the following error message:
Unable to open /dev/mmc/blk0/disc
And my questions are:
Is there any chance I can screw my JasJar while installing Linux?
What to avoid while installing Linux?
Thanks in advance to whomever can help.
Cheers,
Zak

HI.
Why create a new thread when there allready exist one?
Seems like Linux doesnt like your sd card. Try anothter one.
No, you wouldnt touch your wince installation. You are running linux from your sd card so it wouldnt affect wince.
I have never heard of any people bricking their device for running linux on it, but you never know. I have been using linux on it for one and a half year now, and never bricked it.
If you gonna reply to this post move over to the original thread, we dont need several linux on universal threads.

yeah theres already a thread for linux but anyways it will help if you try and reformat your SD/MMC card in the computer and before starting the installation procedure make sure that your device is reading your storage card then proceed.well i noticed that while creating the partitions nfilesystem on My sd card thru the deivceit tends to generate alot of heat from the battery id say that its not healthy for the battery in the long run, other than that theres no need to fear of you screwing up ur universal. hope it helped.

Hey guys!
Thanks for your time & answers & sorry to create a new one, thought the other one is old and no one will check it.
I'll post there, and hope some can see that there is a new post!!!!!

I formated the card as suggested in my PC and it was detected by WM5 as usual but I got the same error.
Then I tried to format it in my mobile and I got a message: "Unable to format" and this is where problems started.
The card CANNOT be formated anymore, I tried in windows, dos, WM5, but nothing ....

What are you searching for exatcly? Most of the questions are answered here in the forum. You can also take a look at the Wallaby section in Wiki.....
Stefan
Wiki ? can I've a URL ?
I tried to upgrade my Qtek 1010 from 2002 to 2003 although I can't start it now. The windows stops on the loading screen.
I tried to use a few things like XDAarit and stuff, but I did it with MMC.
I didn't get any reply to my MMC question in the forum ( Post ). So I guess that is not the problem, that guy here said he used a FAQ I wanted to know where it is, maybe it might help me out.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wallaby
Never tried flashing with a MMC. Used everytime a SD-Card....
So I'm not sure, but I'm nearly sure that's your Problem....
So try getting a (at least) 64 MB SD-Card and try it again....
Stefan
Thanks dude, problem solved.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't the MMC problem but the Xdarit and my card reader. After taking a different card reader from my fathers PC shop and taking an SD card with a new xdarit. It all worked out just fine, Although I still got one issue, I'm trying to put 2003 and still it never works, I tried all kind of versions, only 2002 works great. Can you give me any hint ?
Don´t know where the problem is. Have you tried XDATools and the OSImageTool?
Stefan
I didn't but that shouldn't be the issue, because I can install 2002 and upgrade with active sync. which pretty much the same thing, in both ways it doesn't work. only pocket pc 2002 works fine.

I remember an other guy, who had the same problem. PPC2002 ROMs went fine, but all WM2003 didn't work. But i don't remeber if, and how he solved the problem. Maybe you take a search in the forum and contact him personally....

MicroDrive BIG ISSUE [SOLVED!]

Guys, let me tell you my most recent problem with the MicroDrive of my Dopod U1000! These are the e-mails I sent to Dopod Customer Service at Taiwan, they were very kind all the time by the way, but I solved this issue myself thanks to:
WM5Storage Version 1.73 (http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=238545)
Thank you Igor V Bozhko!
FIRST E-MAIL, I wrote, I was shocked!
Hi, yesterday while I was listening to some MP3's on my Dopod U1000 on the
car, the device freezed! That seemed very strange to me, because that was
the first time that I saw this, so I did a soft reset as usual, and when the
device entered Windows Mobile, it wasn't recognizing the MicroDrive!!!!!!!!!
I have tried everything to get my MicroDrive back to live, tried
Formatting it with the Windows Mobile utility, with the Boot Loader,
hard reset, I even tried to downgrade to
ruu_athena_dopodasia_wwe_1.24.707.3_105_6275_1.32. 00.10_108_ship!
FIRST Reply! Not very clever, but they have to cover the basics!

SECOND E-Mail I wrote:
Yes I have already tried: Start>Setting>Format Micro Drive and it doesn't work, it exits with the following error:
MicroDrive cannot be accessed.
After that I tried performing a Hard Reset and by pressing the Communication Manager button I agreed that I wanted to format the MicrDrive disk too. The unit was wiped on it's ROM part information giving me the Welcome Screen, installing again all the Extended ROM, but still the MicroDrive is not recognized.
Today when I made a soft reset after the hard reset, and I could listen to the motor of the MicroDrive being started just after the bootloader screen, but before saying Microsoft Windows Mobile.
Do you have an utility that can tell me if the MicroDrive is present and is working so we can discard a mother board problem?
Thank you!
SECOND Reply:

THIRD E-MAIL I wrote when a brilliant idea came to me 3 days after I had suffered from this issue! I used WM5Storage:
GUYS! HUGE Update!
I have managed to access the MicroDrive on my device!!!
I have used the following program:
http://www.modaco.com/WM5torage-t238545.html
I enabled WM5Storage with the following configuration:
Read-Only Not checked
Removable Class Checked
As DKS1: / External Storage
And when I plugged it into a Windows Vista Toshiba Qosmio computer, the MicroDrive was recognized!
I am copying all the information that I had on my MicroDrive, since this information was vital!
Would you recommend me anything? Should I try formatting the MicroDrive via Windows Vista once I get out all my information?
Thank you, and I hope this helps, obviously there is something wrong with the ROM you are shipping with the Dopod U1000, I will keep you informed guys!
FOURTH E-Mail I wrote, everything is working as expected now!
Wow! I just formatted the MicroDrive using Windows Vista tools, and as soons as I Deactivated WM5Storage (By Ivar) the MicroDrive was recognized again, with any soft resets or anything at all!
This tool is great, maybe the motor of the MicroDrive was stuck or the Windows Mobile OS refused to recognize it because of a bad sector or something, but finally I have my MicroDrive working again!
Please keep an eye on this problem since I have heard of at least 6 cases like mine having the same issue, I will post this information on XDA-Developers.
Thank you and regards from Mexico City!
THE END!
Please let me know if you are in the same situation and I will try to help you out!
Regards!

Sorry to bother, you mentioned about downgrading, what exactly was the rom you were using?
I bought U1000 in Thailand, and the only rom that's available so far is 1.24.707.3, where could I get access to any newer ones? Thank you in advance.

As far as I know at this time the most recent ROM version is included in the Dopod U1000 sold in Taiwan, I ordered mine from wu5262
My current and the shipped ROM I received with the device is:
ROM 1.24.709.3
Radio 1.32.00.10
Protocol 32.65.7020.09H
ExtRom 1.24.709.104
I tried downgrading to see if flashing another ROM will solve this issue, and since ruu_athena_dopodasia_wwe_1.24.707.3_105_6275_1.32. 00.10_108_ship was the only ROM I found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302039&page=4
I simply tried flashing it. Sorry but there are not any ROM upgrades for our devices yet, I guess we will have to wait for the Official WM6 ROMs in June.
I have the same micro drive problem as you mention , but i am no luck
to use the WM5Storage it display a error 1f massage when i click the activate bottom.

Have you tried doing a Soft Reset before you try to mount it with WM5Storage?
This is a very frequent problem of WM5Storage and it is due to an application trying to access the MicroDrive. The best way to solve this so far is doing a Soft Reset and before doing anything else try to use WM5Storage.
Good luck!

The problem finally solve with run the WM5Storage in VISTA without mobile connection center installed. After that i high level format the micro drive all resume to normal. Don't know it is a ROM bugs or mechanism issue. Will HTC release a Micro Driver diagnostic tools?

JustStable is a ROM. That's an equivalent to an Operating System on your computer.
Metaphor: Sure, you can run Linux off of a CD Drive, but Windows, no way!
Your SD card in your phone is similar to a CD drive. So, NO, you cannot install an operating system (ROM) onto your phone's SD card.
And one more thing...Flashing a ROM (installing it) isn't nearly as simple as installing a program. Just like how upgrading your Operating System on your PC compared to installing a program on it.
If you wanna upgrade and flash to JustStable, tell us, and we've got some guides that you can follow.
what's the first thing you download

First thing you do is go to: www.thewingster.com
Then you go to the ROM's section. Pick your ROM. Do NOT pick a ROM that says, LZX. Once you found a ROM you like, locate the How To Flash this ROM link on the ROM's page. Follow the instructions.
As it says, first, you download and extract your ROM. So, you return to your ROM's page and click DOWNLOAD. Then you unzip or unrar it. You might need 7zip for that.
Then follow the rest of the instructions. Got it?

It should just fine. Let it stay connected for a while, it has to download the Windows Mobile Device Center, so that takes some time.
If you're on 64-bit, it still should work, but I've heard some problems with that.
make sure the device has been hard spl'd. or use uspl to flash.

Okay, from begining
Answer in points like I ask you questions
1. Can you enter bootloader? (serial text on screen without backlight)
2. Which Bootloader version do you have? It is written on screen when in bootloader mode at bottom (like 1.03v)
3. If you put your device into crandle (of course crandle is connected to usb in your pc/laptop) do USB text appear in place where Serial text was already?
4. Which system do you use? (Xp, vista, 7, linux, unix, amiga, commodore)
5. Do you have nk.nbf and Upgrade.exe or HimaUpdate(...).exe in THE SAME folder?
6. What happens if you run update application and click Next?
7. Did you tried to run in administrate mode?
8. Do you have x64 system?
9. Do you have himalaya? put out your battery and check if it is written PH10B or PH10A.
10. Did you tried another PC or another crandle?
11. Which rom you want to flash?
Answer here.
HI,
1. yes
2. v1.01
3. yes USB is displayed
4. windows 7. ( i have XP aswel which i tried and failed also)
5. Yes. Both files in same folder on my desktop.
6. it says checking information on your PDA then says connection failed.
I tried it when not in bootloader mode aswell and it said it was erasing everything off my PDA but then said connection failed straight away.
7. Yes tried it in admin mode but same error messages.
8. no not using x64 system.
9. under the battery it says PH10B
10. Yes, tried my laptop and also my desktop.same errors on both of them.
11. Ive tried a few ROMs. any ROM will do realy. just want to get rid of windows mobile 2003.
Thanks for your quick replies.
ive updated alot of phones from windows 2003 to windows 6.5 but this 1 is just stubbon lol.

Linux and PDA

Hi,
after long time without a PDA i bought me a Vodafone Compact IV. It's a great Pocket PC, since it store the timezone and date i entered when shutting down . But i really don't want to use WM anymore. It runs WM 6.1 original.
How do i get into the Flashing things? Where on the WIki are some instructions for it? When i had my wizard i had to know if it is G3 or G4, i had to read some stuff like ISPL or something. But where is a beginnerfriendly tutorial? Then the next is, how do i get Linux working on the device? I know about a tool to dualboot WM/Android. And i also found threads which explain how to run Android from SD card. At first i have to know how to start. That's why i need to know about the flashing.
Is there a bootable Linux image? It's okay for me, to delete the WM Partition, but is this possible? Is there anyone working on?
Might it be a problem that i am on Linux with my Desktop PC? :-/. I could use OSX too, but i don't want to get back to windows.
I hope there are some out, who know my situation. Please excuse my imperfect english
edit: it actually doesn't need to be Android. I would be happy about a working Linux system with package manager. There doesn't need to be X11 and the stuff. But, of course, a Desktop environment would be great
edit2: okay i got a HardSPL'ed device know i am flahsing with SD-card. Thats very nice. Is there a Linux Image out there, which i cann install via SD-card and that runs instead of WM????
