Missing the EDGE icon? SOLVED - NEW RADIO ROM - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I just downloaded vp3g's wm6 2.0 and where I used to get EDGE coverage, I don't. The speed tests say otherwise, but the icon is still G and I would like for it to be the E. I already tried the registry, and it is enabled there. I am currently on at&t if that helps. Thanks in advance everyone.

"U" Magically Appears After New HTC ROM Upgrade,...but

I have a TYTN and never had had the "U" come up on my phone. (I am with Tmobile). I recently upgraded to the newest HTC ROM and as soon as you go through the date and time setup and you tap to start using the phone, it immediately displays a "U" for the UMTS signal.
Then the extended rom kicks in and does its stuff and after the reset the "U" is gone and replaced by the "E" for EDGE.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Did I ever really have UMTS?
I have my band selection on auto and I have tried also to change the band settings. It tells me that there is s data call present and to try later.
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Allan
No you never had U. The new Cingular ROM always says U if you do not have the ext_Rom installed. I live in a E area on Cingular and it did the same until I put the .....PPT......cab from the ext rom on the device.
Your Right
You are right. I reset my TYTN and reset before the extended rom began. The "U" was there. I put in internet2.voicestream.com and the little "E" appeared above the bars while the big "U" was still there. I ran a speed test just to be sure. I got a wopping 135 kb. It was nice to see the "U", even if it was fake.
Thanks for the help.
Allan
Is this an official rom, final and released? or a test build?
I recently was in Boston (3G area) - 8525 with upgraded ROM, showing both "U", and at times "H". However, there was no real difference in speed (DSL mobile test). But, interesting none the less to have all four symbols (G,E,U &H) displayed.

Signal problems i didnt have with my Wizard

I got the Hermes (cingular 8515) a couple of days ago. And everything is just fine but the most important part. I keep having dropped calls in places where the Wizard didnt have any problem at all.
ROM: 2.06.502.3
RADIO: 1.34.00.10
PROTOCOL. 32.67.7020.10H
I had the shipped ROM but i had this signal problems so i upgraded to this one in the hope that the problems would be solved but same thing.
Cingular did change my SIM card to a 3G one. I was wondering if it is a different network inside cingular and that is why i have problems. I really dont care about 3G, don't use it. Would my problem solve if i ask for a new regular SIM?
Thanks guys. I looked a lot for the same problem already posted so i dont repeat but didnt find anything, wich worries me a little
Yes, it could be that, because if you're in a major metropolitan area it'll try to use UMTS instead of GSM.
In any case, there is a fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286844
This is a small app that will allow you to quickly change back and forth between the two.
If you don't want that, there's a reghack to enable a Band page in phone settings where you could force it back to GSM. Check the wiki.
Wow! thanks! it looks like the problem was solved!
I won't know for sure until i really tested it. But this is what i wanted to try

AT&T Pure bloatware

Does anyone know how to get rid of it? On the Fuze you could reset the phone after you aligned the screen, but on the Pure, that screen never comes up.
Did you try a hard reset?
Yea, tried that. Everytime you hard reset, it goes to the screen "Customizing for first time use", then you are in TF3D.
Try soft reseting it while its "Customizing".
Soft resetting while it's customizing it doesn't work. It just starts the whole process over again. I got my pure yesterday and I've been trying for a few hours. Hopefully we'll be able to get one of the standard htc roms with the Sense UI on Tuesday.
I wound up just installing NRG's ROM...no more bloatware and fast as lightning.

Does marketplace still work on that ROM.
BTW, did ATT restrict HDSPA on this device like it did with the Fuze? Meaning, only 3G speeds and unable to activate HSDPA?

I didn't see an icon for marketplace in this ROM. When I typed in the website within Opera, it just said "Coming Soon".
I haven't tried HSDPA yet, just got the phone yesterday and haven't done any surfing on 3G yet, just Wifi.
Marketplace doesn't work on this rom either as the site isn't up yet from what I can tell. I think that HSDPA was restricted. I'm now running NRGZ rom on my pure per KGEISSLER's advice and am loving this phone so far.
Are you running the NRG's Leo ROM or the Genesis ROM? I am running Genesis.
I'm running the Leo. For clarification from earlier, with the AT&T rom it only showed 3G. I now show HSDPA but not sure if I'm actually receiving that or if the Icon just changed.
is there a way just to bypass the att software without having to use a custom ROM...i just got my att pure today and I wanted to get it back to the HTC factory TD2 wm6.5 status w/o all the extra stuff...
I just got my Pure today. From the looks of it you are stuck with bloatware till you flash a different rom, soft resetting before the customization process starts doesn't cut it.
So far, the phone works great. I ended up moving all the at&t crap into a folder so it didn't crowd up my start menu.
It is unbelievable that ATT is still restricting use of HSDPA. We are supposed to be happy with slower 3g speeds while iPhone users can enjoy full HSDPA speeds. Goes to show you, ATT only cares about those stupid iPhones. Granted, I can put a custom ROM on it, but I should not have to just to get full 3G speeds.
to Duttys Ultimate (leo) R4
I put on Duttys Ultimate (leo) R4 and both HSDPA and G3 seem fine to me, no more bloated junk from ATT. but I did want to add some components back on, like mobileTV... any idea on where I can get the .cab files.
How is ATT restricting use of HSDPA, and more importantly, how can we undo this without flashing to a different rom? Is it simply a registry setting?

The same thing happened with the Fuze. On the Fuze you could enable Hsdpa via advanced config but as soon as you reset it went back to 3G. Can only be fixed with a different ROM.

Was 3G now G

Flashed T-Mobile 1.43 to generic 1.66 which has improved the loud call volume and distortion greatly. But the network now says G rather than 3G are they the same?
Does this mean the network settings have changed. I have selected T-Mobile as the network internet.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
3G is as you expect 3G, G is GPRS which is deffinately NOT 3G speed.
Chances are the rom you have installed has 3G mode off by default. Open Comm Mannager and you should find some toggle switches, one for data connection, and another for 3G. If the data connection one is on, but 3g is 'off', you will get G or E (for edge), but with the 3G one 'on' you should get H (HSDPA) or 3G
Tlooked through the settings and there is nothing that switches 3G on or off.
Anyone else seen this?
Thanks.
Suggestion:
Flash to Dutty's HG v8, which is based on the t-mobile ROM and has this option (and is much better than 1.66 stock, IMO)
I don't know about you since you are on T-Mobile, and if there is a 1.66 ROM released explicitly for the T-Mobile net, but I'll share my knowledge on this:
I'm located in Sweden and use the HD2 on the Tele2 net. I also upgraded to 1.66 and got the exact same problem as you.
I tried the 2.07 rom and the problem remained, however after 2-3 hours I finally got 3G connection.
The problem is that both 1.66 and 2.07 comes with newer radios. These Radios are the reason I can't use 3G at least. I downgraded the Radio to 2.05.51.05_2 and it all works fine for me now. I don't know if this is operator related or hardware related and hence I'd like to know if the 1.66 ROM you installed is explicitly released for the T-Mobile net.
If that's the case I'll probably need to contact my vendor since I'll probably not be able to use any of the newer Radios, which frankly sucks. Please let me know!
I have the 1.66 on Virgin UK (Tmobile and the 3G has not dropped at all.
Don't know if that helps or confuses ?

Ild rather have the choice, than no choice at all. Dutty's ROM has been the only flashes ive needed since T-Mobile stock ROMs.
The ROM is the latest 1.66 on the HTC website. I asked T-Mobile about it but the person did not really know. They asked if the internet connection was fast, but since I've had the phone it has been patchy. It seems reasonably fast today. We have two other T-Mobile phones, HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy and both these also show the G and these are non flashed standard as bought.
I'm a bit nervous about using cooked ROMs.
Andy
Went over to Hungerford this morning and 3G came up so it must be a network/location issue and nothing associated with ROM 1.66.
Good to know all functionality is still there.
Thanks for all the replies.

As I said, in my case it took a couple of hours (no matter location) and the 3G appeared. Could you do a soft reset when you get the 3G at Hungerford and see how long it takes before you get 3G again?

[Q] Can't get 3G or GPS working on HD2 running Android 2.3 NAND

Hi everyone!
This is my first post on XDA, but I've been referring to it a lot lately and have to say that it is a great community.
I am hoping that someone can help me with my HD2 problem. I initially tried running an SD version of Android 2.3 on my HD2, it was great but I had no working 3G or GPS. I thought this was to do with the ROM build, and started to look for a new one to try out.
It was at this time that I learnt about NAND. Since then I have installed HSPL 2.08, MAGLDR and flashed MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 (v. 2.6) A2SD+. This is a ROM of Android 2.3.2. Note that before I did this I had Radio version 2.15.50.14, which I believe to be correct (for the reason of needing 576MB RAM).
Everything is now running great on my NAND Android except for 3G and GPS. I don't have the option for enabling 3G in the 'wireless & networks' menu, which I should.
I've searched around but all I can find is people saying that before you flash Android you must ensure you have a radio that is compatible with 576MB RAM. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Radio 2.15.50.14 is 576MB compatible.
The fact that I have no 3G AND no GPS does suggest that the radio may be incorrect (from what I know about them), but I don't know for sure. Can anyone help me out here?
I don't know if this info will help or make a difference to which radio I should use, but I am on O2 UK.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help! It is much appreciated!
have you made sure the o2 apn settings are correct ?
I am not familiar with O2 in the UK but since there is also T-Mobile in the UK, I am assuming that O2 is a competing SIM card carrier similar to ATT in the US for me. And if so, then I would think that O2 only can give you EDGE and not 3G. That is what happens when I try my HTC HD2 on ATT. Unless I am on T-Mobile, all other GSM carriers will only give me EDGE and not 3G. In regards to not obtaining GPS lock, I think it could be caused by the build you are on. Many of the builds are optimized for the location of the developer. I would then change your gps.conf file in your build to optimized GPS lock for you in the UK. Here is a link to the thread to help you change the gps.conf file on your phone:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630

Hi. Thanks for quick reply. I can go into my 'Access Point Names' menu, in 'Settings' > 'Wireless & networks' and can see multiple choices there. Seven of the options are for O2:
O2 UK (mobile.o2.co.uk)
O2 UK (mobile.o2.co.uk)
O2 UK Postpay MMS (wap.o2.co.uk)
O2 UK Prepay MMS (payandgo.o2.co.uk)
O2 MMS Postpay (wap.o2.co.uk)
O2 MMS Prepay (payandgo.o2.co.uk)
O2 UK MMS (idata.o2.co.uk)
I have no idea why some of them are identical or why there are so many for O2. However, I would have thought I should choose either of the top two, as I am on an O2 contract. If i select one of the top two then I can see the settings for that APN. The settings I can see that have values are:
Name, APN, Username, Password, MCC, MNC and APN type.
Should it be as simple as selecting an APN from the list or is there normally customisation required?

Hi. Thanks, that looks like something I need to find out for sure, although my 3G worked fine when I was running WM6.5 on O2, it was only when switching to Android that the problems arose. When I had the SD card version of Android I could go back and forth from WM6.5 to Android and would have 3G work in WM but not in Android, every time.
The good point about the SD card method was that if I ever really needed 3G I could easily reboot and use WM6.5, but of course now that I have a NAND version of Android I cannot do this, and so I am pretty keen to try and fix the problem so that I can use things like Google Maps when I am out and about etc.
Thanks again.

Doing a Google search it looks like O2 can give you 3G provided you have the proper APN settings. The different choices you listed will be based on what type of O2 plan you are using. Here is a link to a suggested APN setting if you are on the postpay MMS plan: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/o2-uk-postpay-mms-internet-apn-settings-18558/

Hi. Thanks for the info and link. I tried the settings mentioned in the first link you provided and it worked! Brilliant! After I had input the new settings I had to go to 'Mobile networks' and re-tick 'Data enabled'. I now have a little 'G' icon in the status bar with an incoming and outgoing arrow above it and can browse web pages again! Ahh mobile connection, I have missed you!
By the way, that G icon, I've just Googled it and it seems it represents a GPRS connection, which is slower than EDGE. I have to say, this new connection is very slow (not that I'm complaining too much). Does this make sense to anyone? On the post I got the settings from (linked to above - I can't add URL's to posts yet as I'm a new user) I noticed that the users are saying that the settings will get 3G working, there was no mention of GPRS. Do you think my phone is defaulting to GPRS becuase it can't get 3G working?
Thanks!
I have exactly the same problem on orange. worked fine on wm6.5 but once i flashed android have had a night mare finding 3g coverage, but alot of ppl have 3g coverage on a nand android been trying to figure out why cant i, i also have that G but its really slow internet and cant talk on pingchat etc, gonna ring orange tomorrow n see if they can fix it/give me correct settings.

My 2G network option was always unchecked, but thanks for commenting anyway.
I seem to have a pretty much fully working connection now. I had the G icon (GPRS) when at work the other day, but once I went home I managed to get an E icon (EDGE), which was much faster. I don't know if I'll be able to get any faster than that (i.e. 3G or HSDPA), as I am assuming that is partly to do with my settings but also partly down to geographic location and coverage etc. But at least I have something now, I am very grateful for that much
In addition, my GPS seems to be working too (I started this post of with neither GPS nor my mobile networks working). It takes some time to get a lock on me, but it gets there after a few minutes. Fantastic!
Thanks so much to everyone who posted comments, I appreciate them all
I hope you get your problem sorted, LaneyEFC. I'd definitely recommend getting the APN settings from your network provider, my problems went once I got that step right!
