I went to do a defrag with Pocket Mechanics and it was supposed to restart in safe mode and defrag. But it only starts up in safe mode to the windows screen and stays there. Now I can't go anywhere else. Any ideas??? Thanks.

What version of PM are you running? I had this problem with 2.43 and I don't remember exactly how I got out of the situation. I seem to remember that PM creates a shortcut in \WINDOWS that is called from \WINDOWS\StartUp on restart. When I manually ran this shortcut, the situation was fixed on the next restart.
There have been several new versions since 2.43. There was at least 2.44 and 2.45, now I see there is a 2.50. It seems Anton has been so busy putting out new releases that he hasn't been able to keep up with the change logs, so I can't tell if this issue has been fixed. You may want to load the latest version and see if that helps. If not, send Anton a help request via his website www.wizcode.com, I am sure he will tell you how to fix it.
Note that all safe mode really does is disable your Today Screen items. Other than that, your device is still pretty much fully functional.
John
It's 2.45.
And it starts up to the "Windows Mobile" blue screen and just stays there. Nothing happens and I can't even do a soft reset or anything. Nothing. Active Sync can't connect to it so I can't execute anything. The only way is to take the battery out and then it just goes right back to this screen.
During startup, is there a key or something I can hold down to select a boot up option?

I assume you are trying to avoid a hard reset, as that would be the easiest option (and maybe the only one).
Before installing software I recommend a full backup program as your first ever purchase. These problems would cease to be problems as a hard reset can be followed by a full re-install of all your settings/programmes. I use SPB backup.
Mike
Yes, I'm trying to avoid a hard reset. And even then, I hope it works.

OK, this is not what I was experiencing with 2.43. I think you need to contact Anton for help. I agree with Mike Channon's suggestion, one of the first programs I bought when I switched over to Pocket PC was Spb Backup, and it has saved me several times.

I am a bit of a newbie...
My device was working perfectly. THen I started up AIM this morning and it froze. I reset it, but now when it powers up, it is frozen, nothing works or happens. If I call the device the phone doesn't even ring. NO clue how to fix it and any info would be much appreciated.
Thats very strange. Try pulling out the battery and let it sit for about a minute or 2. If that doesnt work, then try to return it for a new one. If you somehow get into the start menu, go to settings and then the system tab. Click on "Clear Storage" witch will reset the device back to the way it was when you first took it out of the box. Yes, you will loose all info stored in the PDA but its better than not being able to use it at all. But this does tend to fix 80% of problems.
I had a similar problem today... I installed netframework and after that it stop responding.... the only working thing is the power button and when I press it the only thing I can do with the stylus is select yes or not... other then that wherever I type it does nothing!!! have you solve it?

Hi,
I have a tmobile MDA (wizard). I attempted to install some software on it, but disconnected and rebooted before it was complete (it appeared to be just spinning).
Now after a soft reset, screen shows only 'Windows Mobile' after booting, and none of the buttons work and I can't advance from this screen.
Is there a way to hard reset that doesn't involve using the OS (ie, I can't click on anything because it's not getting to that point).
Also in this state activesync isn't detecting device.
Thanks in advance! - Chris
Hold down (and keep holding) the camera button while depressing the reset button. Hopefully it boots into a tri-color screen. If so, plug it into the USB port and, at the bottom of the screen, it should display "USB". If that happens, flash it with a *known good rom*, such as a stock T-Mobile rom. Don't try to be clever, the object is to get the phone working. Once the flash has started, *get up and walk away* for 15 or 20 minutes. Don't check in on it, leave it alone, It takes some time. When you hear it's little chime, it's done, rebooted and ready. If any of the above doesn't happen or the flash outright fails, then you may have trashed it permanently. It doesn't sound like it's beyond hope yet, however.
i have the wizard and im having the same problem after installing a ROM from this website...it just goes to the windows mobile screen with the numbers then shuts off...id really like to save my phone is there anything else i can try because that hard reset thing isnt working

Well same thing happened to me a few days back.. I had to Cold Reset [which restored it to factory defaults], but hey I got it working again..
Press Communication Button [Top Left] and Record Button [Top Right] at the same time and use the stylus to soft reset..
You will get a black screen, asking you to press "Send" to reset to "Factory defaults"
Press "Send".
Hopefully you should get your MDA working again ...
I read the "Above" in the HTC Wizard Service Manual [PDF] on the *last page* under the "Cold-reset" Section..
OK, I did something dumb. I went in and activated OMAPClock via Smartskey without fully testing the limits of my MDA. I'm sure you know what's coming next... now my phone won't boot. It usually will get as far as painting the Today screen but it completely freezes at that point.
Other than a hard reset, is there any way that I can get my phone up and running? I'm thinking of something like safe mode on a Windows PC, where I can bypass the stuff in Startup. Or is there any other way to block Smartskey or OMAPClock from starting automatically? If there were some way to get at the config file for Smartskey I could fix it as well.
Thanks in advance...
The only way to get safe mode is if you already have a program installed that has that function. There are a few out there, one being pocket mechanic and I can't think of what the others are off hand but if google for ppc safe mode you'll find them. Unfortunately if you don't have one of them already installed you're most likely in for a hard reset. I don't exactly trust safe mode on my wizard anyway, the one time I tried it out it wouldn't come out of it. It just kept rebooting in safe mode after that and I ended up doing a hard reset anyway.
As far as i know hard reset is your option. but thats me saying
I myself had this problem when i first started to use my phone and i found out that there is no safe mode but there is programs that have this option
Edit: xeno1 beat me to it
HR and recosider using safemode tool.....
Hi all, first time poster long time browser I checked the wiki and did a search but couldn't find a similar post. Here goes..
Yesterday i tried to connect to this protected wifi at a coffeeshop, but my HD did not manage to connect even after entering the network password. In the end it froze. The home screen was showing, i could feel the vib when pressing the screen, but no action happened. I did a soft reset, but that didnt make a difference... nothing working still, while it is still trying to connect to wifi.
Then I first did one hard reset. I managed to get to the screen where i am asked to touch the screen in order to configure the device. While i could feel the vib, nothing happened. I did a second hard reset, ended up at the same screen, but this time there is no vib when pressing the screen... and still nothing is happening. Same situation when doing a third hard reset.
I am lost for ideas.... Have anyone of you ever experienced something similar and what did you do to resolve it? Or have anyone any suggestions as to what I should try next??
Very bad dude,
what you can do (i dont know if this will work).....Flash your original rom again. it is a kind of a hard reset, but maybe this will work.
can you boot to boatloader (three color screen), and see the text USB when connected to pc?
Hi Kadir,
thanks for your answer.
I am trying to flash my rom using the excellent tool Hard-SPL package from OliNex, but to no avail.... i keep getting error message 202 meaning that it can't connect with the device...
This may sound obvious, but just in case... have you tried to remove the battery when the device is turned off? Is the only way to ensure you are fully turning it off, in case you have some kind of 'static' acting up. I had a similar issue on a PDA and also in my notebook, and was solved by removing battery.
hi,
thanks for the advice. I wish this was all it took, but alas no, i am not that lucky. I am starting to think this is a hardware issue....
can you see the 3 color screen?(when phone is off push power on + volume down button and keep volume down pushed).
if yes can you see it you are now in the bootloader. just chech if you see text usb, this means its connected.
and then flash, no 202 anymore.
do not use hard spl if you want HTC to repair your phone(warranty issue)
Don't you have to disable USB connection in ActiveSync too? Or was that just me?
I found the Flash program killed active sync anyway, but you're right all the guides say to disable it.

Try a factory reset (Loses all information on the phone, beware!). Im not sure how to do it just yet, but im sure your manual or something online can help you.
I remember on my Old MotoQ9c you held the center select button while powering on the device.
Anyone else know?

power off the device
remove SD card
remove battery for 2 minutes
replace battery
power on device while holding power button and up volume key
follow the directions.
This will factory reset the device, this means everything is deleted
*Sigh*
Alright, hard reset complete. Thanks for the instructions.
On the bright side, Im dont need to worry about backing up my data when those custom roms start getting released.
