Hey guys, so I receive an SMS and it gets shown in Pocket Outlook. Now on any normal phone I simply press a button and I'm given the option to reply by text or simply call the number that the text was sent from.
Where is the option on the Hermes? I'm running Windows Mobile 6. Please don't tell me it simply isn't there?! Even a cheap £10 phone from a supermarket has this available.
I'm starting to regret getting this phone. It seems like if you actually want to do anything practical with it you have to pay for additional software, like spb GPRS monitor to make sure you don't spend too much on data traffic, or spb Mobile Shell to actually give it a usable thumb interface. I think it is nothing short of scandalous that all these things are included as standard on a basic Sony Ericsson phone. Such is life; pay loads of money, you get ripped off. Free, you get it all. I am slowly resigning myself to the fact that as a phone the Hermes / o2 XDA Trion just plain f***ing sucks. Back to my K800i I go. At least that actually functions as a proper phone without all this nonsense.
All I ever wanted to do was have a phone with wifi built in and the ability to play old dos games. Never in a million years did I think that there would be so many hoops to jump through.
And no one here ever did answer my question about running dos or giving me a list of what number all the keys were (e.g. "Button 0" = OK, "Button 1" = Start, etc.).
I really wish I'd got a Nokia N95 when I renewed my contract. I wouldn't then be stuck with this piece of [email protected]

In pocket outlook (text messages), pressing the green key while highlighting a text message will ask if you want to call the sender.
Pressing the right soft key will allow you to reply.
Regarding dos, did you check out PocketDos

What do you mean, what number the keys are? In relation to what? Settings > Personal > Buttons, or something else?

Doh!! Well that could be a bit better documented. I was looking for a context or menu option, along the lines of "call this number / contact".

I mean, every key has a corresponding map number doesn't it? For example, if you go to Start > Settings > Buttons, Button 1 is the message button on the top of the Hermes, Button 4 is the Camera button, etc. If this is the case, what button numbers are, for example, the keyboard cursor keys? Or the cap / shift key?
Also, the problem with PocketDos is, as far as I'm aware, it doesn't play any audio apart from emulating the PC Speaker. And you hhave to use plug in which take up loads of memory, leaving you nothing to actually run the games.
Yeah, I can't say I've ever used pocketdos, Dos disappeared quite some time back for me. I think it's the best we've got, but check out some of the emulation sites for specifics.
The keyboard map does have specific key codes, but they are not compatible with the Settings > Personal > Buttons buttons. I think we're stuck with the 5 or so default buttons, and additionally emulated hardware buttons using apps like AE Button Plus.
However, try an app like PQz which will allow you to use many of the keys on the keyboard.
V
Hi, just out of interest do you know what the specific key codes are? It is this list which I am after and which it may be possible to create a mapping for with DOS.

I've been using PocketPC Phone Edition since the first XDA came out. Since then a lot of things has changed, devices gained more memory, became faster, smaller, adopted Bluetooth and WiFi. But one thing remain almost unchanged - phone dialer. It does serve the purpose, but a lot of things are missing and annoys avid cellphone user. You know what I am talking about
For me one of the biggest concern was absence of Calling Card support. I am communicating with our overseas officies couple of times a day on the regular basis and dialing all those numbers is really pain. So, while I was looking for calling card support add-on I came across this piece of software - MobiDial.
It's not a total phone dialer replacement, more like a shell for it. It does everyihng I want and excpect from a phone - calling card support, one hand operation, vibratouch, nice and clean interface.
Here how the main interface look like:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As you can see, all buttoms are big and nicely placed. Also, you can enable vibra option, so you can actually feel when buttom is pressed.
At the bottm you can see row of icons:
Settings, address book mode (see screenshot below), 4 strars represent speed dial windows where you can also assign pictures, and call log icon.
You can switch in between them by pressing jog left and right and scroll in address book mode by up and down.
As I've mentioned before, the biggest advantage for me is Calling Card support. Programm automaticaly dials International numbers without any users intervention. Actually, you can specify this in the settings: always use card, ask user and bever use it.
This is international call in progress:
Couple of things: current release version doesn't work correctly with Second Edition, but beta with SE support is available upon rewuest from developer. Also, first load takes about 5 sec, but then it pops up instantly, by the way, you can assign harware answer/hangup buttoms to MobiDial
You can try it for 14 days here:
http://www.mobidial.com/mD/
I've made a small video of using this software. DivX encoded, 950 KB.
Cheers

P.S. I've posted the same review on HW, I am using a different alias there
HI. I had same concern of yours for a while, and I got great help from your topic. However, I'm stil lmissing one feature: The caller groups, allowing you to assign a ringtone to every group or individual caller. Combined with the Sendrui pocketzenphone application, you might not even look at the screen to know when to answer whom. Any advice?
Thanks in advance, and hope I can be of any help one time.
It looks like a adverstisment more than a complain.

RingtoneX does this nicely. I have all my contacts filed under Categories in Outlook (like Family, Friends, VIP, Business, etc.). RingtoneX lets me assign ringtones to each individual or by category. It works perfectly. Since you can create any category name you want it makes it real easy. (Only thing I've noticed is it didn't like spaces in my category names like "Friends 1", so I changed my category name to Friends_1 and now it works great).
Anyways, it's only $7 for the software, and it works very well.

Alright, So I have this Universal, and I love it. Then one day, I figured that it shows a certain resemblance to something else...

See the resemblance?
A keyboard?
Two extra keys?
A touch-pad/touch-screen?
So I figured, why am I still ****ing with this media center keyboard and it's silly joystick-for-mouse thing? I got a full fledged remote control as a phone!
After two days and a lot of stupid windowing and socket coding later, I had a semi working app
I've attached it here. It's still alpha, so only download if you want to test, it's not ready for real usage yet
What it does at this point? You can move the mouse, but it will be pretty jerky, and you can type
What is still to do?
- Proper protocol, not some dumb-ass dynamic package size ****
- Soft keys -> mouse buttons
- Proper server application, system tray icon and all
- Password protection
- Some more neat features
- Maybe some features people recommend
How does it work? run PPCRCServerTest.exe on your PC, and run PPCRCClient.exe on your device. tap the screen, enter IP or hostname (for some reason hostnames only seem to look up if connected through activesync...), and hit connect. Once it says "Connected", start typing and moving touching your screen
Also, please note that for some reason WiFi seems to be faster than ActiveSync. I have no idea why, but it just does... odd uh?
So what do I need back in return?
- Feedback
- How on EARTH to know when a soft-key is pressed and released
That's pretty much it
Remember, just a little preview, not ready for real use yet!
Bye,
TB
Hi TheBlasphemer.
I don't have a uni, but your app still sounds pretty neat.
Here's something that might help you alone (if you haven't found it yourself yet):
There is a function called SetWindowsHookEx. I haven't played with it much, but I know it lets you hook the keyboard (all of it) and handle all key events up / down. If I am not mistaken it returns the address of the previous function so you can delegate the keys you don't want to handle back to the system. Kind of like window subclassing.
Now all you need is some debug prints to figure out what VK codes respond to the soft keys and you are done.
Good luck!

Actually as my window is the top window, I already receive all key events through WM_KEYDOWN and WM_KEYUP, so there's no need for windows hooks and stuff
I have looked into what happens when someone presses a softkey, but I only seem to get two weird keyup events when I release it :S (VK 112+16 and VK 113 + 16). I could use these, but as I could only see when they're clicked, I would only be able to do mouse clicks, not dragging
Btw, it should also work on other PPCs, like the wizard
Hi
Just tried on my BA WM5. It connects (it says connected on the PC server) then it closes the connection immediatelly for a reason. But this looks like a promising app so I'll keep on tracking it...
P.S: Do you plan to release the source code? (I'm a beginner programmer, examples are always good )
M'kay. I was looking at an assortment of "remaps your softkeys" programs, and I'm either too stupid to see it, or it doesn't happen. It's also possible I'm searching using the wrong terms. I am a little slow sometimes...
I want to press the center button on my dpad, and have it open the Start Menu. I'm using WA2 to gain cascading menus, and I'd love to be able to completely launch a program without using the touchscreen or pulling out a stylus.
If it's already been done, can someone please point me to it? If it hasn't been done, whose butt do I need to start kissin'?
Here's a shot of what I'm talking about, just in case my mis-speaking is confusing you. When I press that button, I want that menu to open!

Yes, I've heard of it. No it's really not the answer to my prayers.
I don't really care for the smartskey method (it would take too long to explain, but I don't like it, and that should suffice for explanation), and I don't get why you can't remap that center button...it doesn't do anything in the Today view (or much in anything else, other than "execute" whatever is focused).
Thanks anyways for the reminder. If all else fails, I can fall back on that as an unsatisfying workaround.
Got any other suggestions?
M'kay, it's not freeware, but it does have a free trial. AE Button Plus is capable of doing what I want, within reason.
I have to double click my center button (reserving single click for selecting highlighted items, etc.) to open the start menu. I'm actually okay with this as a solution.
Still, this program, as good as it is, is more bulky than I'd like (nearly 1/3 MB!) for such a seemingly simple action. I'd expected this to load pretty small, and was surprised by the relatively large package.
I know it's cheap of me, but I'd still welcome any (free/smaller footprint) alternatives to this...
Try HButton it does everything and more, i love this app.
you are able to map 6 apps on 1 button and you can even use your slider to scroll.
check this

At first blush, this appeared to be what I was looking for. However, I cannot figure out how (if it's even possible) to reassign one of the five HButtons to activate from the center button on the dpad, or how to distinguish that from, say, clicking the dpad once to OK a procedure or popup message.
Not really interested in clicking and holding (for example) my Messages button to open the start menu.
I feel rather silly for being so picky, but there you have it. I'm picky.
After wrestling with all of these, I'm slightly embarrassed to say that charly_mx had the best suggestion, right off the bat. It's not perfect, but launching Start from my left soft key isn't terrible, just not what I wanted.
Sometimes, you just don't get what you want, so you take what you can get, and so I have done that.
Apologies to anyone that I annoyed (esp. charly_mx).

Not sure if this is even the right place to post this.

Free PTT for any Windows mobile phone.
Works with;

mobile to pc
pc to pc
Uses wifi and data.
And it even chirps just like nextel

we have set up a support forum for this over at www.skinzone.org
and the support team at loudtalks is keeping an eye on it.
now this is still in beta, but works damn good for just beta.

yes. No button mapping needed.. PTT button is a software button on program.
Likin it! Thanks Volt
I also can verify that it is working nicely, a few glitches to work out all in good time. I used HButton to remap the program so when minimized it comes up, then on my wizard I use the center on the d pad and hold while I talk then release. Just like nextel, bit slower but free, what can I say! You have to (sender and receiver) both be set up on the system to communicate but that doesn't take too long to get set up. Put the word out and we can all help work out the kinks so this system can run smoothly. Remeber before you lauch you must already be connected to the internet. Andason is also correct, if you leave it open then you would not have to do any mapping at all as the program uses the select button on your phone. If it is a different button on your phone it will not be difficult to find by trial and error. Remapping isn't that difficult and HButton is a free program, works great...................Later.
Hey Voltage?
Hey Voltage do you know how a person with a touch screen only (no hardware buttons) can utilize this great software. Is there an issue because of the lack of a default hardware button to access?
hey wanted to just re-post that the developers are watching

1. do the headphones have a Mic? and if so, does it have button(s) on it to answer/end calls? can you do voice dialing with it?
i am currently using an IPhone 3GS where i can raise/lower volume, pause/play music and call people using voice control. just curious if the stock headphones can do all of this, or failing that if any aftermarket ones are available that provide these capabilities.
2. does any sort of Palm Pre styled application switcher exist? right now i can bring up this with a long press on the home button or spreading my fingers on the home screen, curious if this functionality is available on the N1/Android because it is extremely convenient.

In standard Android long press on home brings up a grid of the 6 most recent applications. Only icons though, no live view. And no closing apps from there.
Don't know an app like the one in your screenshot. I'd surely be interested if you or someone else finds / codes one.
1. N1's earphone does have a mic, you can next/play/previous music, and answer call. U cannot volume up or down using the earphone though. Voice cannot be activated using earphone, but you could hold the search button at home page to activate it
2. The app you show is just for the visual purpose. iphone does not have multitasking like Pre or Android, so why we need that fancy card slider anyway.
You can bring up the notification bar to switch between current opening apps

i knew about the long press on the home button from playing with the Android 2.1 Emulator. but i was hoping for something more aesthetically pleasing.
and yeah, the program in my screen shot is extremely convenient and aesthetically pleasing for switching programs. but i can imagine the pull down shade at the top of the N1 probably accomplishes all the same tasks...

are you sure voice search cannot be activated? nobody has added in this capability? that's unfortunate because it is really nice to use for making calls without removing the phone from your pocket. hell, with Google navigation you could probably use it for walking directions to somewhere as well.

my 3GS can Multitask, just poorly. even with the added ram (256MB) i can only run 2-3 applications at most before experiencing crashing since the apps were not designed with backgrounding in mind (for example, to play a basic game while running pandora i have to shut down Safari completely to free up enough ram for the other two programs..)
You can scroll through the running Activities/Tasks/processes with "AppSwipe".
Can be bound to a longpress on the search soft-button. Quite customizable too.
