Bit of a wierd one this...
I'm trying to sync my M700 with Outlook (from Office Pro 2003) using ActiveSync 4.5 on my Dell M70 laptop. Works fine at home, but fails at work with a synchronisation error. ActiveSynch spends ages with the "Looking for changes" message before displaying the "Synchronisation error" message. Sometimes "Synchronisation cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft AvtiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer." is displayed in a dialog box. The troubleshooter can't find any problem when I use that. I'm trying to sync Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes and Files. Even though synchronisation fails, I can still browse my PDA in Explorer, so it's connected, it's just the synchronisation bit that's failing. PC is mains powered and uses the same cable in both cases. At home the laptop is plugged into a docking station and screen, but the cable is plugged into the same USB port on the laptop (not docking station). The other big difference is that at home, my laptop is always connected to a router and the internet via the ethernet port on the docking station.
Any suggestions.
Cheers,

What kind of (software) firewall do you use? I had same problem with Kerio. I had to change my firewall software.
TB
My firewall is from the F-Secure Internet Security package and is always running regardless of where I am so I never thought to try that. However I unloaded it (easy to do, just right click it's icon in the system tray and choose "Unload and allow all network traffic", but not "Unload and continue with current security level" because then ActiveSync won't even connect, let alone allow syncronisation) and suddenly everything synchronises. So firewall + internet or no firewall + no internet and everything works, but firewall + no internet and ActiveSync is broken. Application control is set up to always allow the two ActiveSync apps (WCESMgr.exe & rapimgr.exe) so I'm not sure what's happening here.
Anyone got any more ideas about what's going on? It's quite easy to unload the firewall when I want to sync my laptop to my PDA, but it's also quite easy to forget to restart it before I reconnect to the internet and eventually I'm going to get hit by something nasty. And I don't want to swap internet security packages since I've just paid for a years worth of subscription updates.

hello all,
After the installation of ActiveSync, i insert the usb cable to laptop and put the Xda II on cradle, the ActiveSync in computer couldn't find any device (Xda II) and i can't setup the partnership, however, my Xda II display the "connected" only for 2 seconds and then interrupt for ever, i have installed the ActiveSync many times and hardreset the XdaII, but it is still not connected, what's wrong with this? :?: :?: :?:
When the xda 2 is first plugged into usb you should get a message on your laptop screen saying device found htc etc, once this is done activesync should see it. Which version of activesync are you using?
I tried the ActiveSync 3.7 and ActiveSync 3.8, the results are same. The laptop can find the USB, but the ActiveSync can't find the XdaII.
Idea
I am assuming Active Sync works on other computers?
If you are using XP,
Make sure the device is plugged in.
Open up task manager, (Ctr + Alt + Del), go to processes and end task on WCESMgr.exe and or wcescomm.exe.
Right click on My Computer, select Manage. Expand Device manager, Windows CE USB Devices, right click on PocketPC USB Sync and Uninstall, click Yes.
If you see any devices with an explanation point or marked Red, Uninstall them too.
Unplug your device.
Open up Active Sync, under the settings, make sure USB is checked.
Plug in your device.
I have seen this happen if windows did not configure the device properly at first.
As a thank you for my time, send me naked photos of your wife!!! KIDDING!!!!
Thanks for your help, i have done this by following what you said, but it is still not connected. When the laptop find the Device USB first time, the XDAII just display the "connected" for 1&2 seconds. I click the "Error" on XDAII, which is Synchronize with Server, then it displays:
The connection failed due to mising server information or user credentials. Tap Options, and then the Server tab to verify that your server name is correct. Then, tap'Optaions..." to verrify that your user credentials are correct and try again.
I haven't changed ther Server Synchronization in "Option", and my laptop doesn't need any user name and password to logon.
What's wrong with this? How to set up the "Option" in XDAII?
DUDE!!!
It is hella confusing.. BUT... You do not use the Server setting.
I use the Server setting but I have my own Exchange server 2003 and using Exchange Server 2003 Mobile Services, I have my Contacts, Calendar and Inbox always up to date via the Internet, (I have unlimited Internet through T-Mobile for $19 a month).
You need only to use the PC synchronization. Open Active sync, Tools, Options, Options again and check to make sure it is checked and USB is selected, OK, make sure the other two are "Ticked" as well, OK.. Then try.
This Time I only want naked photos of your DOG!!!
There should be some problems with laptop, because everthing is ok when i connect my XDA with other PCs. I can't find what problem is with my laptop. It is running Windows XP professional edition.
Darge, this isnt going to sound very logical, but if you have more than one usb port, please try the other port, I have had similar problems with activesync whic have been resolved by doing this, dont ask me why because i dont know.
May be should try othe type of connection other than USB. Try using either bluetooth or wifi. May be you should search in the forum regarding connection using bluetooth or wifi.
My Xda and laptop are connected and working very well after i reinstalled the Windows XP for my laptop. It was the stupid and only way what i could do, because i have tried all kinds of solutions which were not useful.
Thanks a lot for your advice and help anyway. 8)
I have a new problem with ActiveSync.
When i connect my cradle to the laptop (via usb) activesync connects to the device, i hear the nice connected sound from my speakers and the green activesync wheel starts turning while it displays a "looking for changes" message...
My device shows that its connected via activesync and the tray icon is visible.
After a few seconds, i hear the disconnect sound, Activesync disconnects and the tray icon on my ppc disappears. However the wheel in Activesync remains turning for a while and then it also stops, becomes grey and it says "not connected".
This happens whether i connect via usb or bluetooth. in both cases it connects adn then disconnects. i have removed the partnership, uninstalled activesync on my PC and reinstalled it and recreated the partnership but still nothing doing.
I hate ActiveSync...
help Sad
I have the same proble. I have no firewall, tried reinstalling activesync, outlook, cleaned the registry, checked the network setting, changed the usb cable. Still nothing...Can someone help me out with this.

Try checking or selecting Maintain connection.

Some of your posts helped me flush out this problem, so I thought I'd share my find.
Problem: ActiveSync USB does not connect to Qtek9100/HTC Wizard OR connects but never syncs
Solution(s):
1. Uninstall/reboot/reinstall ActiveSync 4.x
2. Hard reset your mobile device
3. Configure your PC firewall correctly, see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
4. When you connect to your USB, go to Network Settings on PC
5. Find your Mobile Device, something like Local Area Connection #5
6. Select Properties, make sure TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft…, Client File and Print… are ALL CHECKED. For some strange reason, mine were not and this was the problem. Default setting should be fine for all three. ActiveSync 4.x uses the TCP/IP stack to communicate, therefore you need to get a DHCP address from the PC ActiveSync Client (this is all automatic)
7. Make sure your Mobile 5 Active Sync is configured to use USB, mine was under MenuConnection and required selecting the check box to use USB.
8. You should be good to go!
9. A fall back technology is IrDA, but hopefully the above worked for you!
Best,
Ldr. D
Though even after doing everything you need to do you will still find that every few synchs Activesync will hang and refuse to do anything until you have shutdown and restarted wcescom, rebooted your 9100 or both. Still defies logic how a microsoft OS synchronizing with a microsoft OS via a microsoft synch product should have so many problems.
Active sync via USB
I never get a Network connection. it selects a network adapter. any ideas?
Another issue that I beat my head against is the "Modem Link" under Programs. If that bloody thing is active, then it will NOT see a USB link to ActiveSync. I was working out the kinks of the modem a couple days ago, and found today that AS wouldn't work. Of course I went through the whole install, reinstall, reboot, pound head, etc. before getting to the modem link issue.
When I plugged my JasJar into my computer via the USB cable, dirctly to the port on the back of my computer, my Windows XP system immediately detected the new device, and installed "Windows Mobile-based Device" (Network Adapter)
Upon attempting to find it with ActiveSync, it claims there is nothing connected. Upon attempting to activate ActiveSync on the JasJar itself, it comes to a window saying it is not connected, with info to connect to an exchange server.
I am using ActiveSync 4.1 (listed as 4.0 in Add/Remove Programs) downloaded from Microsoft website. I was at the time attempting to sync with Microsoft Outlook 2000. I have since connected the device to alternate USB ports, hard reset my device, upgraded to Microsoft Outlook 2003, and uninstalled + reinstalled ActiveSync 4.1 (in that order) in attempts to get my device working.
Alas, I experience faliure. However, my device charges, and if I uninstall the driver, it ceases charging. I do not have my SIM card in the phone yet, as I would like to be able to get a connection, and upgrade the ROM before I worry about making it a production system. Until then, I will be still using my old phone, who's profile I have deleted from ActiveSync, thinking it would conflict with my JasJar.
If anyone else has had this trouble at all, and figured out a way to get this to work, I would appreciate it if you could let me know. If any other information is needed, I can provide you with extensive information.
I have searched through I-Mate's supprt forum, and through xda-developers forums in the Universal sections, and looked elsewhere, and can not find any similar issues where ActiveSync will not see the device, or where it shows as a Network Adapter.
Thankyou!
yes I had same problem. Goto network connections>click on properties for local area connection Windows Mobile Device and checkmark all 3 boxes (Client for Microsoft Netwrok, File and Printer Sharing and Internet protocol.
It should connect and start working.

I did so. All three boxes were checked, so I unchecked them, saved, disconnected the JasJar, reconnected, checked the boxes, and did the same disconnect/reconnect, and soft reset the phone as well. Alas, it remains in the same state.
I do have a very strict block on TCP/IP ports on my computer, however, that is only with the Ethernet and Wireless adapters vis Windows's TCP/IP filtering, so that should not affect this at all.
Are there any specific IP address settings I should have? I do not have any firewall software installed, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1, and I have an HP iPaq 6315 that connects and syncs fine . . .
I very much want to upgrade to my JasJar. I am going to have to take it to one of my friend's houses who has a JasJar, and see if his computer sees it. I will not be able to do so for a while, maybe a week or so, but if I can not figure it out by then, it would at least narrow down the issue to either computer or JasJar.
Thankyou for your help, if you have any more information, maybe I just need Service Pack 2 . . . need to clean my HD up a little to make room for it though.
Minor Success
I have more information. I was able to connect to a computer that has Windows XP Service Pack 2 installer. It was a success. I was able to sync. So, I am attempting to install Service Pack 2 on this machine as well, and see if that is what is troubleing the whole sequence.
OK, there is something else. I upgraded my PC to Windows XP Service Pack 2, and it still fails. However, it fails differently now. The network adapter it is listed as has a conflict. I attempted uninstall, and reinstall of the adapter, and Active Sync, and no success.
It works on the Windows XP SP2 laptop, but not on the desktop. These ssytems are very similar in the setup with the way they have been configured, so I am uncertain as to why this is happenning. It makes me jolly sad.
Howdy,
I bought an HTC Touch a month ago to replace my iPaq 2490. Everything about it works great except for the desktop passthrough feature that lets me connect to the internet when cradled to my PC.
With my iPaq, I could plug it into the cradle, open up IE, and surf to any website with the desktop passthrough feature. I also had an application that would download RSS feeds to my device when connected. Both of these features no longer work. The error I get when trying to use IE to connect is this: "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again".
The funny thing about this is while connected to the cradle with the HTC, I can check my POP3 email accounts without any problem. It also connects and updates my weather plugin, so there is an active connection, it just doesn't seem to work through Internet Explorer. Anything that uses IE to connect to the internet fails.
I've downloaded the Opera Mobile browser and I am able to connect to any website when cradled. Unfortunately all the RSS programs I know of use IE and therefore still cannot connect to update my feeds.
I don't believe it's Activesync related because if I plug in my old iPaq, the desktop passthrough works perfectly. I don't know if there's some place on my HTC to tell IE to use my desktop passthrough connection or not... I can't find it anywhere.
I've done everything I've read from various posts on the net, such as:
- Changed connection type from "Automatic" to "Work Network"
- Added the AllowLSP registry setting recommended to fix a similar problem
- Tried it on Windows Vista with WMDC without any success.
- Tried it at home without any firewall
- Unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in the USB to PC setting on the device.
- Uninstalled Activesync 4.5 and reinstalled from scratch
- Done a hard reset of my device twice.
If I connect via GPRS or Wifi, I can use IE without any problems.
You guys are a lot smarter than I on these things so I thought I'd give it a shot and post to see if you've got any helpful advice.
Thanks,
-J
