Broking the digitizer... and the buttons gone! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi!
I'm new here and i've bought a tytn a month ago. Thanks for ALL THAT YOU HAVE POSTED HERE!
Unfortunately I've broken my touchpad digitizer but I'm yet buy a new one that should arrive in a few days. The problem is that the front panel keys.. (green phone, soft right and left, start, ok messaging an IE) stops working till the screen was broken.. The Dpad work fine in all the five direction.. Is that a problem connected with the screen? they will come to work again after the changing?
I think that, beeing on the same connection, the malfunction of the screen can cause an uncorrect connection to the buttons but it's only a prevision.. (read HOPE)
I hope I'm able to explain my problem also with this very very bad English. Sorry.
Gianmarco

From the information you give, it is possible the connections to the keys have become dislodged. This is more likely if the phone was dropped.
However, until you open the TyTn you will not know the extent of the damage.
Mike

Thanks mikechannon for the prompt answere.. i try to explain better:
All the connections are in good condition (the connection on the mainboard and the connection on the front pad are perfectly placed). The only one "open circuit" is the digitizer.. 2 of the 4 connection does not join the layer that has been scratched away (yes.. don't tell me more...). In poor world, the resistive input of the first layer of the digitizer is.. max ..open circuit.. ^^
I've to wait the replacement and hope? ^^

I won't ask what you've been up to Abusing your poor TyTn!
You may be lucky. Certainly there are numerous reports of screen problems being linked to dead keys so good luck.
Infinite resistance - sounds like a frigid virgin. If you have one I'll cure her with my special equipment !
Mike

ok.. waiting for the replacement.. if all goes bad no problem..
SELLING LIKE NEW TYTN WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WAY OF HUNG UP A CALL..
I'm the only one that remove the battery for closing a call against an answering machine.. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I can soft reset with the stylo!! GOOD
Serius question: you think I can change the digitizer without the lcd?? It should be easy.. isn't it?

I thought you were getting a new screen? They normally come with digitizer attached??
Mike

Yes.. normally.. but i've bought only the digitizer without the Lcd..
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Sorry man!
I've no problem!!!
YES!
My Tytn has starten NOW.. god!!! i've repaired it!!
OK.. i explain.. the digitizer has 4 pins.. 2 was broken and not connected with the layer BUT.. yes BUT.. i'm so crazy that i've cutted a alluminium film (small, 2 pieces of less than 1mmx2mm) and i've reconnected the layer to its configuration.. obviusly the screen is totally scalibrated because now there is the resistivity of the small 2 alluminium connection but the buttons works FINE!! ALL! yes!! wow i'm crazy of happines!!! i've repaired my tytn.. but i've always to change the digityzer because i can't use the touch screen.. not important
Now i can close a CALL!!!! great!!!
Thanks to all for the picture of the inside of the phone, the instruction for the dismount of the phone the constant support that you gives to all!!
Thanks for the icon.. the smiling icon of the past post.. I'm crying ^^
THANKS xda-developers!
ok.. ok.. it's late for all.. i'm going to sleep (with my repaired tytn!!!)

Hush everyone Gianmarco is sleeping - fixed his TyTn - happy days - sweet dreams

Sorry for the long silence.
I was here but i forgot that thread.
I'want to thanks again all the staff because a week after the fact mentioned above i've recived the new digitizer from HK. I've changed it with the original one and i've experienced a new way of playing with my ppc. The new (i think not htc orignal digitizer) has no alignment problems.
Thanks a lot for all the work you've made and you do here.
p.s. i've to change the digitizer again because the new one (now) is full of scratch.. amazing.. isn't it?

Is there a way to fix the screen?

Hello all, i'm facing a very serious problem with my skin.
I woke up the morning and the screen of my Atom was awful! I can't describe it because i don't know what the hell it has!
Here is 2 pics to see my problem:
With the screen off the problem is very obvious on the upper left corner

A pic with the screen light on (the problem isn't so obvious)
I'm in desperate position, i don't know what to do!
Is there a way to fix the screen? Do i have to buy a new one? If yes, do you know from where i can buy it? Unfortunately i can't send it from Greece to Hong Kong for the official service.
Any help appreciated!
Bill
Yes there is...
Hi Bill,
Im very sorry to hear about your screen. the problem with the screen is that the backlight of the lcd is not functioning. ( Its called BPD-light).
there are 2 options : 1. you can change the whole lcd screen, but thats pretty expensive if its not under warranty 2. you can replace the BPD which is very cheap actually (35-60$ ), but it is very rare to find.
In my store we fix those problems.
if you are interested, you can contact me : [email protected]
Goodluck!
Not sure whether it's the similar case as mine. My screen was ever like your atom snap shot a few times. Very clear when it's screen off. Mine's due to the screen got depressed a bit too hard (while in the pocket or doze off on bed with my atom ) that it some how stick to the one beneath. What I did was just to press that area with little preasure and it got back to normal. Hope it helps.

Umm, what??
The backlight clearly is working in the second photo.
Thank you all for your replies.
Yeah, it is the screen's problem and not the backlight.
So, the device it's on the way to HK for the official service and LCD's replacement.
I have seen similar circumstances in many TFT applications (I used to repair digital cameras).
My hypothesis:
The problem is perhaps liquid trapped next to the reflective diffuser sheet(used for backlighting) a piece of opaque polarised plastic paper.
I think water has got between the plastic rear membrane and the diffuser paper, and it is trapping it, in what can only be described as the capillary effect. (HTC might disassemble the LCM, let it dry, and then clean with isopropyl, or just replace it because it's too much hassle).
Finally my Atom is in my hands with the screen replaced!
I have sent my Atom ~20 days ago to Hong Kong with the help of baubaubau (http://forum.xda-developers.com/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=83579).
I've shipped the Atom to him, and then he has delivered the device to the O2 Support. Also, because O2 has run out of LCDs he gave them a strange push for not the replacement be delayed.
So, i have to thank him in public.
If you have any problem with your device or you want to buy a new one don't hesitate to come in contact with baubaubau. [/url]

Black lines on display when screen freezes

Since a few weeks, at an increasing rate, my screen tends to freeze completely. This usually happens while entering a program, or after a few seconds when I'm playing music in the Windows Mediaplayer. It also happens when my Wizards wakes up when I receive an incoming call.

Some remarks:
- no overclocking installed
- sometimes the things displayed start 'shaking' a little before it shows the barcode
- music continues to play, and thus the wizard itself doesn't freeze
- when I push the 'on/off' button to make the wizard go standby the black lines dissapear slowly
- when I push the 'on/off' button again the lines have vanished and the wizard works just fine... but usually it freezes up again after a very brief moment
I've re-installed the ROM, even different ROM's. Nothing seems to work.
Who knows what this problem might be?
If you've done a hard reset and it doesn't make any difference, then I'd say it's a hardware problem and you need a new phone.

Mine is also from T-Mobile (so it actually is an MDA Vario). Mmm, sucks. Hopefully I can turn it in for a free repair.
Hi,
I've just got the same problem on my T-Mobile MDA Vario.
I'm in the UK and tried to contact UK T-Mobile but I've received no further response after telling them that I bought my phone from Ebay and I was not their account holder.
Can anyone have an advice? Thanks!
BUSPBP
My MDA Vario has also started doing the same. Can somebody please help??? :'(
As far as i know it is a faulty connector tape between main unit and screen. should be easy to repair in any service point. i have the same problem as i mentioned here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321078

How did you figure out it is the connector tape?
Because thing like this occurs ONLY and INDEED ONLY as a result of damaged connector tape.
I haven't read about a single device with this symptom that had this problem caused by something else tham connector tape.
Thanx. Will have to look for a place where they would repair/replace the connector. Funny thing is, only MDA Varios seem to be exhibiting this problem.
Nope, I've got an xda mini s (o2) and the same problem. Mines only goes fuzzy when the keyboard is not open, but it is very annoying.
Btw.. as for the faulty connector tape between the main unit and screen, is there anywhere this can be bought?
I have the same problem and have diagnosed it as the connector tape too. So far I have not seen them available anywhere. I did ring up PocketPC Tech in the US and they said I would need to replace the screen (presumably because the screen is sold with a connector tape assembly too?)..
I find I can solve the issues by turning the device off and holding the LHS of the housing down on the LCD slightly. Then I can turn it back on and it's ok. I also tend to find the problem occurs more frequently when the device is cold (poorer connection I assume).
Mine Fades to White
Hello everyone.
My HTC Started doing the same (Fading to white on wake).
I never had this problem before. It happened when i updated the ROM; from the original WM5.1 to 6.1.
As i'm not the technician here; you shouldn't take my opinion as granted.
It can also be the screen "tape"; since my HTC TYTN has a minor scratch on the Screen Tape.
To solve this problem i do 2 things:
1- If it didnt stuck; press the power button to put the device in standby; and then press it again to wake up.
2- If the device went stuck; remove the battery at least for 3 sec. and boot it to the bootloader. (also figured that when it doesnt boot with the boot loader or else; it can be "revived" with the usb cable plugged in; and doing the bootloader step).

With any luck it's just the keyboard connector that's a bit loose. It's just under the back cover so no major dismantling:

Sorry.
How high was the fall?
I've dropped mine many times on all sorts of surfaces and still kickin... If you saw the condition of my 6 month old 8525 you'd shiver
No help to offer. :|
Do what mike says, mines taken many a tumble and i've had to set the keyboard connector and the front camera back in place twice now.
Just as the thread states....I DROPPED MY HERMES!!!!
Assessing the damage, part of my keyboard popped out slightly. It popped back into place, but while using the phone, if I close the sliding keyboard, my phone will freeze. Or in other words loss of power. If the keyboard is not closed all the way, I can use my phone. If I carefully close the keyboard, I sometimes can use the phone. A small bump will result in loss of power.
I believe I have a loose connection somewhere. I am going to take Mike's suggestion to look at the keyboard connection. Does anyone have any other ideas I should check?
Giving an update. I opened up my Hermes to find the battery connector has broken off. I did more searching on the forums about this very issue. Hopefully resoldering the connections will work. Understand that the board has many layers and a may have damaged the connection internally. Will have to see. Luckily, I have a friend who works on all sorts of digital components for installing and repair. Hopefully this is the ONLY problem and not just one of many!

Funnily enough i did make a post suggesting a problem with the battery connector - but you may know the site was hacked and we lost some posts from Sunday.
Anyway, let's hope it has just broken the surface solder joints and all will be well.

new case probs

okay i bought a hermes off ebay, ment to be scratched like u expect after a year in ya pocket.. it was SCRATCHED to hell like a sheet of sand paper was used on it, and somoen had written war and peace on it.
it was cheap so i thught i may as well pick up a new chassie for it, i did it arrived today, i had already watched the few videos about how to dismantle this phone (i am no stranger to doing this as i tend to repair my friends and ppl i knows mobiles and used to have a alpine that went through 2 lcd`s and 3 touch screens until i learned to look after it)
i carfuly stripped it down, replaced all the casing to a new jasjam case, and now the keyboard wont light up (ya i know about the light sensor) and the screen wont auto flip, but i can still use the keyboard just with a normal portate screen, i have tried hard resetting as i am still trying to find a rom i like and dont have any software installed.
is it the kb ribbon thats gone? and anyone know were i can get one in the uk? is there any way of manualy rotating the screen like on the alpine? as i can live with doing that until i get a fix.
I did the same, got a new case but I was lucky, it still works altough the blue light is always on.
To manual rotate the screen you assign a hardware button to it. Go to setting, buttons, select a button and the rotate screen from the program list.
Good luck

Amost certainly either the Keyboard ribbon cable or its connections (As you say). The magnet operated orientation sesnsor is built into the ribbon cable and is of course also linked to the keyboard open light up action.
BUT, I have seen this happen because the magnet has dropped off!!! It's a small metal oblong and does not look like a magnet.

Hermes Screen (Digitizer?) broken

Hi everybody,
I have a question regarding the HERMES screen/digitizer with which i have always had problems...
I have been using my O2 XDA Trion for a bit more than a year now and i have always had the screen (dis)alignment issue. As i do not have warranty anymore i decided to check out the source of the problem one week ago, so I did a lot of research (also in this great forum ) and diss/reassembled the Trion without any problems. The problem now is : While I was testing the Trion's touchscreen with the included pencil suddenly the screen behavior changed. I am, as you can see on the two pictures below, not able to get in to the lower right corner of my screen anymore:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
There is no way to get in the lower right corner of the screen, even touching at the very low+right point doesn't work. My questions therefore are:
- Do you think the root cause is a digitizer failure? (The LCD itself still works flawlessly...)
- Do you think buying + installing a new digitzer might fix the issue? Might it also fix the screen alignment problem?
- How "hard" is it to install it? Through my research in this forum i heard that soldering is needed?
Thank you very much for your answers in advance,
Cheers,
Philipp
Looks like a digitizer issue as you can't get any sort of selection to happen in that area but the LCD is not damaged as you said.

That's very probably true. The other thing that can cause wierd effects is anything that may be pressing on the digitizer around the edges underneath the bezel. Unfortunately some Hermes suffer from the digitizer remaining sensitive to touch even under the lip of the casing.
Regardless, I would not be tempted to replace the digitizer only. Although it's theoretically possible, it's not an easy job (LCD and digitizer are stuck together and contacts have to be made, positioning accurate , danger of cracking the LCD etc etc). Despite extra cost I would personally replace LCD/Digitizer as one unit.
One final point is that replacement carries a chance that things will not be perfect after replacement. This is because of various sensitive parts that can be affected when dismantling. eg. the d/pad connector.
Mike
Other way would be to find a "broken" Hermes (make sure its not the same problem or whitescreen) and use the whole slideout screen section. I did this and it worked fine...
Got my spare Hermes off ebay....
Cheers...
Hi guys,
just wanted to give you some information on the results.
I ordered the replacement screen 2 weeks ago here in Germany for about 45Euro (which is quite cheap i think, yeah ).
Everything worked fine so far. I installed the screen as described and it directly worked without problems. I have been using the Trion for more than one week now and the best thing is : Even the screen alignment problem seems to have dissappeared with the new screen, yeeppeh
Btw: I was a little surprised but the "new" replacement screen had the same date of manufacture on it as my "old" screen (which is in fact >2 years old). Nevertheless it worked...
So thank you all for your responses and help!
Cheers,
Philipp
