Changing Hard Reset Rom - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I was just wondering , is there a way to change the backup rom stored on your phone so when u hard reset it installs that rom, because i hav a t-mobile mda rom 1.8.10.2, and thats ll i can hav since i cannot ujpdate my phone via usb so im jus wondering if there is a way somebody please help

There is no such thing as "hard reset" or "backup" ROM on your phone. There is just one ROM, parts of which are loaded to RAM when the system runs and parts are used as is (it called XIP - eXecute In Place).
What happens when you hard reset is that all the settings you changed and all the data you added to the phone are deleted.
Question is why can't you update via USB?
There are options where you can flash a new ROM from a specially formatted SD card, but I am not sure if such thing exists for your device.
I suggest you check the WiKi.

Hard Reset doesn't reinstall ext rom cabs

Hello there,
just wanted a fresh start with wm5 after recieving my 1gb minisd. because i didn't got the hardreset by pressing the buttons to work i used clean storage to hard reset, but afterwards it asks for calibration and timezone settings but doesn't install the cabs in the extrom. does someone know why and how i can fix this?
Ok, found out how hard reset by presing the buttons on the device works. But it's the same thing. Windows Mobile 5.0 setup starts (time zone and popup menu howto) but after this it says setup is completed and returns to the today screen.
But The cabs in the extended rom are stil there. I never touched them but copied the as backup to my pc. I#m able to manually install them when unlocking but they do not install by default. Why?
Can someone of the german XDA mini S users send me a copy of their original ext rom? I'm completly confused why my device ignores the complete cabs and autoexec from ext rom
hello there,
just inspected my extended rom a little further. There is no config.txt. I may have accidentially deleted this file.
Can someone who own a GERMAN O2 XDA mini S send me hiw original config.txt?
Thanks in Advance,
Maui

Full formatting the Jam....

Hi,
I made an hard reset on my Jam but I think that some configurations are still present after that.
Is there a way to make a full reset in order to restore the original settings and cleanup ALL the user's info/configurations?
What kind of settings do you mean? A hard-reset should clean-up everything. Don't forget that after the hard-reset all ext-rom apps & settings are loaded. To skip this, you need to soft-reset just after the initialization end. this is when the default windowsbackground shows & before the pop-up with 'customization' shows.
regards, M
after full formatting of ppc,the storage looks like clean and empy, but 3 mb is not free.Have anybody the same problem?
You may have flashed or been flashed with a custom rom/extended rom.
If that was the case, you are hard resetting, but to the custom storage that is built into the ROM. You might want to flash with a standard operator ROM.

the rom is 1.12,and I download it from this site...

Am I close to bricking my 8125?

I was trying to install IIWPO.
After I copied IIWPO.cab into the "Extended_ROM2" directory, I clicked on the "Extended ROM2" directory and it was blank.
I performed a soft reset, and now it looks like some files are there (but not IIWPO), but some of the files seem to have garbled names.
I'm using a cingular 8125:
ROM version: 2.25.11.1 WWE
ROM Date: 5/11/06
Radio version: 02.25.11
Protocol version: 4.1.13.12
ExtROM version: 2.25.11.102
Questions:
1. Can I & should I try to recover the files in this directory? I don't care about the Cingular stuff in that directory, as long as the unit still boots & can access Cingular phone & internet service.
2. Am I at risk of bricking the phone?
3. Is it safe to hit the reset button on the side of the phone?
4. If I am not at risk of bricking the phone, is the phone still able to be reset to manufacturer defaults by clearing the storage (Settings -> System -> Clear storage) and doing a fresh install like I have done 100x in the past or is it possible that the installation files are corrupt? (ie are they in this extended rom directory?)
FYI: the phone is still locked and CID locked, although I did download (but not run) lokiwiz03a.zip.
Right now the phone seems to work (minus the IIWPO)
Disclaimer: I only have a very rudimentary knowledge of this stuff.
I would do a hard reset and start over... first off.. unlock your device.. lol.
If I do a hard reset isn't there a risk of bricking the phone? The hard reset runs many of the programs in the extended rom, correct? Any idea as to the answers to my other questions?
A hard reset I don't beleive will brick your phone.. .. But just to be sure, read up a little bit, a hard reset restores your phone to original form.. erases pretty much everything and reverts it back... since your rom is 2.25.0001 which is the cingular windows mobile 5 carrier rom it will clear all your settings and saved information and put it right back to where you started.
In answer to one of your questions.. alot of the rom installation files are unnaccessable, so I beleive it is safe to hard reset.. again.. read up on it.. because as with ANYTHING you never know.
I thought that the extended room doesn't get touched on a hard reset (the premise as to why iiwpo works).
So you are saying that a hard reset will put back all of the corrupted files that are in extended rom?
Some of the files are reporting to be over a gb each, so if I think its important to fix.
Can anyone confirm for sure that a hard reset will rebuild tbis directory?
yeah Im not sure about that, I just know whenever I had ANY problem.. that seemed to me like it was potentially phone-killing I did a hard reset.. thats why I said to read around and see if you can find anything similar... I'm not 100%.

Ok, let me clear some issues
A hard-reset does NOT brick a phone and does NOT restore the extended_rom, it only erases the USER area. What will happen, in this case, is that after hard-resetting there will be no files in extended_rom to customize the ROM with all the garbage Service Providers like to push (and sometimes, unfortunately, some useful fixes or network configuration)
@ hamm3r
What you have done is you tried to write to a protected zone (not possible from SPL 1.06 and beyond) and although you thought you did, you saw the result upon rebooting the device - it got corrupted. The FAT is no longer readable and therefore files appear to be GB in size. The only solution is to flash a new extended_rom in case you want to use it when hard-resetting the phone and that can be done by flashing just the extended_rom (using my tool - check signature) or by flashing a complete RUU package - which must be the same you have now (official) since the phone is CID locked
cheers

How to return to old windows mobile

Hi everybody , I have i-mate JASJAM with WM5 soon i'v upgraded to windows mobile diamond ,however I want to return to the old windows I mean the original one but I dont know how to do this , any help please??
Press Start -> Settings -> System -> Clear Storage, press enter to launch, you will be prompted to type "1234" and to press Enter. If you do this you will lose all contents and the Dash will be restored to its original configuration. It takes about 5 minutes for it do this and reboot.
hold down the two soft keys and power the device on. Or you can also hold both soft buttons while pushing the stylus into the reset hole.
Not if mamadoharoona has updated the rom... Doing what DhaMajoR said will reset the Hermes to default BUT it uses the OS installed as the default. So, if you have flashed a new OS on your device you need to flash the WM05 stock rom to get that back, and good luck finding it...
Cheers...
Thank you DhaMajor , Ultramag69 is right the OS system does'nt change after applying your steps ,thats make me want to ask ULTRAMAG69 how can i flash the WM05 rom? I tried the same steps i have done with WM black diamond ,and the os still the same.
If you have any advice please tell me
Thank you for your interest
You need to find the WM05 flash file, good luck with that as they are as hard to find as hen's teeth if you didn't keep a copy of your original WM05 rom.
Make sure you have Hard SPL V7 on your Hermes and then flash the new rom. I use the sd card method as it seems safer to me, my opinion, and is REALLY easy.
1. Format 2Gb or less sd card FAT32. Copy .nbh file of new rom to it and rename to hermimg.nbh .
2. Put sd card into Hermes and reset Hermes into bootloader.
3. If 1st two steps done right, follow the prompts. If not, just reset to get out of bootloader, fix up what needs fixing and try again.
Cheers...
Thank you
Thank you very much

HELP!!..how to reinstall htc OS, not hard reset..thx..

hi guys..i m using a HTC touch (GSM) with WM professional 6...hw can i reinstall/reformat the OS completely...i try google and search here bt all thy give is hard reset, not reformat the OS..so no choice bt to ask help here...pls sumbody guide me....thk u vy much 4 ur time...=)
What do you mean by reformat ? If you want to return to factory settings, hard reset is the answer.
HI
Did you install a cooked rom and you want to return to the original HTC rom of your Device , If so you need to search and download the official rom specific for device model and flash it (your device will become locked again unless yoy had a hard SPL)
If you Didnot install a cooked rom and still have the original one but having some problems may be due to installing some programs then all you need is a hard reset

Hard reset reinstalls your original rom new as it came out of the box but it will erase all data and programs you added to phone
Hanging ,resetting and slowing may be due to virus(not common on WM) or more commonly low memory (too much prog or data on internal storage) , Bad or incompatible software
Antivirus
There are several antivirus prog for handheld devices (Kasersky , McAfee etc) search Google buy or use a trial version and check your device
If infected after removing virus it is better to format SD card
Reformat OS = Flash.

Yes, hard reset also clear memory too.
but to be extra safe, flashing is a better bet.
Flash to stock htc rom.
Hard reset clears your phone completely
to backup your data you can
Use SPB backup(I had it on HTC software disc in thge box) this will back all your settings ,contacts , messages and programs into an exe file on SD card after hard reset run it and everything is there again BUTif the cause is virus or bad programe it will retun to so i prefer that you dont backup programs
PIMbackup is also a free tool to back your messages and contacts only
how to flash locked htc has stock on logo plz help rely need on [email protected]
