I know this subject is old but I could not what I need & how can I fix it
I have bought a pocket pc with phone edition from USA, and when I tried to insert my SIM card it asked me to but my PIN code, then ask me to but the unlock code (SIM code).
Now I am in Saudi Arabia.

Unlocking Quest
Here's my quest to unlock my T-Mobile PPCPE. I think some of this information might be useful to anyone confused about getting this
done.
First I called TMobile to request the unlock code. Since my account was up to date I figured no big deal right? WRong. My IMEI (or TMFT) number was not in their database so they could not give me an unlock code so they said. They told me to call the manufacturer of the device which they said was Microsoft. Knowing full well this was crap I called anyway.
The support guy got a good laugh; MS does not make devices
like this, they only provide the OS. He recommended I call Siemens.
So I did. Real nice guy named Jack had a good laugh as well. Not only could Siemens not tell me who really made my device (a third party made them for T-Mobile) but even if they had unlock codes they could not provide them because of contracts with TMobile. So I go back to TMobile.
The support people felt really bad about the run around and escalated really high up the chain (or so they said). AFter 48 hours I decided to take my own course. Having had good luck unlocking a Treo 600 through 'alternative means' I figured time to tackle the Pocket PC Phone Edition.
This was MUCH different and much harder to figure out.
After a good 12 hours and a whole slew of reading I finally figured out some stuff. Most of this may seem a no-brainer to some of the more educated XDA people out there but for us newbies maybe it will help.

The PDA side of the ppcpe and the radio/phone/gsm side are two totally different animals (not a surprise to some). When you refer to the 'operating system' you're talking about the ROM
like the XDA Developers special edition or any of the ROMs from the ROM kitchen at http://lumpistefans.dyndns.org/. The Radio or RSU (for Radio Stack UPgrade) is totally separate from this. The other variable is the bootloader version (Wallaby in my case).
Now my goal was just to use the XDAUnlock program. When I ran the program right from the defaults I got 'error getting unlock code.' All the posts I read said put on the special edition rom and you'll be fine but that did not do the trick. Still got the same error message.
Here's what I started out with:
ROM: 4.01.16 ENG
Radio: 6.25.02
Wallaby booatloader: 5.22
What finally worked:
Radio: 6.24.00
ROM: 3.17.03 ENG (xda special edition)
then upgraded bacdk to 4.01.16 ENG
Wallaby boot loader 5.15
How I did it

I meandered my way through this to eventual success and since the dratted device now works fine I'm leery about putting it all back to the old way and doing it all over again. Therefore use this process as a guide only, not a definitive instruction set. Also I walked through this as a troubleshooting exercise so some steps may not have been necessary. I eventually succeeded but maybe went the long way around to do it.

- Bootloader utilities: Get to this by holding down the power button and pressing soft reset. You may have to hit the contacts button to get into the menu if you don't see it right away (like if you see a simple GSM OK message at the bottom of the bootloader display.
- Cold boot: the reset swtich on the right side bottom of the device with a picture of a red battery with an \ through it. This disconnects the batter from the mainboard and trashes all the data on the device except the Operating System in ROM.
What I grabbed

- XDATools
- XDARit
- ActiveSync (I used 3.7.1) and connection by USB cable
- Wallaby bootlolader version 5.15 files
- XDA Developers Special Edition ROM
- RSU 6.24.00 files
- XDAUnlock.exe
- SD Card (mine is 128 MB but I think as long as it's bigger than 64MB or your current memory in the device you're OK)
- pnewbootflash_40116.exe
All of these files are available here on xda-developers.com, just
search for them.
First back up everything. Not just using the sda backup tool, from the boot loader. You can do the SDA backup if you want, consider it backing up your data. You can also do the ActiveSync backup if you want to save your data. In my case all my data is stored in Domino so I don't
give a hoot about the data on the device. Your mileage may vary!
Second I'm doing ALL of this with no SIM chip in the device. THis may or may not be necessary.
Stick your SD card into the PDA. If it complains about wanting to format it go ahead and let it format the card unless you have stuff on it you want. I'd recommend dropping anything you want from the card onto safe media and just working with it as a blank the rest of the way through because it's easier to just wipe the card in between some steps.
Go to the bootloader utilities. Hit Contacts button and you'll get the boot loader option stuff. If the bootloader utilities you get to right away takes you to a menu with things like Boot+CE-->SD then you don't have to worry about hitting the contacts button. You only need Contacts button
if when you get to the bootloader screen you see nothing more than
some nice colors, the bootloader version and "GSM OK" message.
Take the Boot+CE-->SD option to back everything up. This will take a few minutes.
Once it's done pull the SD out ofthe ppcpe and stick it into your SD card reader.
Bring up xdarit and chose your removeable device.
If you have more than one MMC slot select the different ones until you get one that says 'wallaby' in the hex codes at the bottom of the XDARit screen. You'll be writing out two files, the first is the NB0 file (which is the bootloader) and the second is the NB1 file (which is the OS or ROM). Name these something like original.nb0 and 1.
Wipe the SD card (format FAT).
Stick the SD card back into the pda and soft reset, then cradle it.
Go to a DOS prompt and CD to where you put 'pnewbootflash_40116.exe.'
Type 'pnewbootflash_40116 nbl515.nb0' to write the wallaby 5.15 boot loader to the device. If when you downloaded the 5.15 bootloader you called it something else (like 'wallaby_boot_loader_V5.15.nb0'
you should of course use that name instead!
The output looks like this:

Now..why did I downgrade the bootloader? At this stage I'm troubleshooting why I get the 'error getting unlock code' message running XDAUnlock. I've got three variables I know of, bootloader, ROM and Radio Stack. I chose to start with the bootloader because
some posts out there say boot loaders 5.17 and higher have some checksum that keeps certain ROMS from working properly. Perhaps if I'd started with the radio stack I'd have been done right away and saved a few hours but all the posts about possible device destruction made me start with the bootloader! Again, your results may vary!
Next I changed the ROM to the XDA Developers special edtion.
Make sure the SD card is in the PDA and cradle it.
Run OSIMagetool and load the ROM file in the first box, chose SD Card in the second box.
If you downloaded the special edition ROM you might
have some luck using the Installer that comes with it but apparently that
does not work with ActiveSync 3.7.1. I got messages that said it could not access the device or no connection etc. Instead I used OSImageTool to load the NK.NBF file included in the distribution. Note that to get to this file you DO have to unzip the EXE file you download!
Once complete pull the pda out of the cradle.
Hold power+soft reset to get the boot loader menu. This should show up as 5.15 now. It will automatically detect that the SD card contains a ROM that can be flashed to the device. If for some reason it does not automatically detect this maybe you have to hit Contacts. I did not have
to do that, it just told me to hit Action to download the ROM.
Hit Action button (aka the jog button) to write it to the device. This will take a few minutes, go grab a beer or two or three. I took the safe route and connected power to the device while writing the flash.
Once it's finished cold boot the device. I waited 2-3 minutes before re-engaging the battery.
Here's a gotcha. On the right side of the SIM there is a little switch. If the rubber door for the sim is not totally closed you can't get the device to boot. This switch is real small so it's very possible to miss it. You can see it fine if you take the back off the device (which I determined from a post here that told you how to get the battery out).
When it boots you should have the 5.15 wallaby booting the xda special edition. Follow the instructions to calibrate the screen and you're ready to move on.
Now if the radio is 6.25.02 xdaunlock won't work, it just generates the 'error getting unlock code' message. You have to downgrade the radio to have this work.
There's lots of posts around here that say don't screw with the radio because if it errors you've got a fried device. I imagine this is true so balance how bad you want to unlock the device against the possibility of totally frying the device. I've done two radio upgrades in my life on the PPCPE, both were OK but again, caution is advised.
Grab the 6.24 radio zip and unzip into a folder on your computer. Use activesync to copy the files to \windows on the device.
Execute the rsupdate.exe program to reprogram the radio to 6.24. WHen completed soft reset the device and go into start-settings-system-device info to make sure you're at 6.24 radio vesion.
Copy the xdaunlock.exe to the device and execute. It should say 'you're device appears to be SIM Locked, would you like to remedy this?" click Yes to unlock the device.
Now the device is unlocked. You can change the ROM to WM2003 now if you want (which I did). I imagine you can re-upgrade your bootloader
and radio stack if you want but I'm leaving well enough alone for now!

I love this site and I think that everybody does a great job. I found rhodwyn’s post to be very comprehensive and it is the one that ultimately helped me out this time. I don’t know if anybody is even interested anymore, but since I’ve been helped, I figured that I’ll try and help someone else. I assume that you’ve already read rhodwyn’s post.
I had the same starting configuration. I did everything that he suggested except for changing the bootloader and it worked perfectly. So, as he suspected it was enough to downgrade the radio stack and to load the special edition ROM. I subsequently upgraded my ROM and all is good (although I haven’t upgraded the radio stack and I’m not sure if I will).
I’ve read other posts about problems downgrading and upgrading the RSU and the 1% problem… I had a problem the first time I tried and I became very nervous, but I looked at rhodwyn’s post more closely and placed rsupdate.exe into PPC’s \windows folder and tried it again and was successful.

Changing Hard Reset Rom

I was just wondering , is there a way to change the backup rom stored on your phone so when u hard reset it installs that rom, because i hav a t-mobile mda rom 1.8.10.2, and thats ll i can hav since i cannot ujpdate my phone via usb so im jus wondering if there is a way somebody please help

There is no such thing as "hard reset" or "backup" ROM on your phone. There is just one ROM, parts of which are loaded to RAM when the system runs and parts are used as is (it called XIP - eXecute In Place).
What happens when you hard reset is that all the settings you changed and all the data you added to the phone are deleted.
Question is why can't you update via USB?
There are options where you can flash a new ROM from a specially formatted SD card, but I am not sure if such thing exists for your device.

Help Please - renamed registry folder & can't change it back!

What a numpty!
I was trying to get HTC Home Weather working thru T-Mobile UK using v1.5HTCHomeproxy0409.cab (without success), so went into the registry using Total Commander to check the Proxy settings.
Unfortunately I got as far as \\\Registry\HKLM and was trying to double click the "Software" folder but instead it went into edit folder name mode and whilst distracted by the wife managed to change the folder name to "n"
Whatever I try, I can't rename it "Software". I've tried creating a new "Software" folder and copying the files across, but a few won't copy:
/Apps/Shared/ "\Windows\mscoree.dll" and
/Apps/Shared/ "\Windows\Intellipad.dll" and
plus some .NET Compact Framework files in /Microsoft/ folder - but I'm guessing these are something the prev user had and wont affect the normal functions / programmes I will use
so... is there any way I can put the files I moved from
\\\Registry\HKLM\Software back, do I need to etc ????
Would appreciate a bit of advice from someone less accident prone!!!!
Its a (recently bought off eBay) , ex T Mob (UK I think) unbranded with HTC home etc. Can't work out how to see what version of HTCHome was on, but guess I've written over it with the proxy.cab now - the icons have changes and have lost today screen battery indicator, but that's a problem for another day!
Not sure what the ROM is, if its an original or cooked (OS ID looks normal to me, WM5?), but ExtROM looks like its been hacked by its name - dferriera WM5SE

Well, if it wont change back, you can always hard reset or reflash to a new ROM...and if you do the later, all of the prerequisites have been done for you, you have HardSPL allplied already, and the correct radio ROM version for most of the ROMs, so you can flash away!

As you've probably noted from my profile and foolish behaviour, I'm new to this, does anyone mind just explaining the above comments on the ROM flash for me please?
-all of the prerequisites (?) have been done for you
-you have HardSPL (?) applied already: Is this related to the Server Proxy I've been trying to patch to HTC home for the weather fix?
-and the correct radio ROM version for most of the ROMs: does that mean I need to be careful I pick a ROM to match my radio version somehow?
If I can't find a way to rename the registry file, I'll have to go for a hard reboot, ROM flashing will be my next project once I feel I've done enough reading to understand what I'm doing and what not to do!

In order:
1-Prerequisites)-You have got HardSPL flashed succesfully to your device which leads to;
2-HardSPL)-Since you have a G4 device, in order to flash a non-carrier ROM you have to have HardSPL applied to your device, and you can tell that yours has been done by your IPL and SPL. Your IPL or 2.21.0001 indicates that you have a G4 Wizard, and your SPL or 2.21.Olip means that you have HardSPL applied already, otherwise you would have had to do it in order to be able to flash any ROMs...which leads to;
3-Radio)-What I mean by correct radio for most of the ROMs is that 2.71.11 is regarded as one of the more stable radio ROMs out there, and together with version 2.19.X, they are the preferred versions, though any version will work with any ROM, some work better than others.

So maybe flashing a new ROM is not too far away...
Does the ROM contain the Windows operating system, in which case can I upgrade to WM6 / 6.1 (version currently says WM5) on my device, will I find a selection with info on what's in them on the downloads pages? (can't get access right now for some reason)

I just did this today with my Touch Pro, it's alarmingly easy to break your device like this.
I think I have it fixed ... after I made the mistaken renaming, the device had locked up (or grown very slow) so I soft reset it. That rebuilt a large portion of the Software folder. After that, I copied the remaining keys in the renamed folder to clipboard and overwrote whatever was in the new Software folder.
Phone seems to be back to normal, but I'll be on the lookout for anything that didn't quite work. If that's the case I may have to hard reset.

@burnsy, yes, most of the download pages contain what the ROMs have in them, but I would look at my review thread in the Wizard Mobile 6 section...its called ROM Features......such such such, its got a list and ratings of the ROMs that you may find interesting.

Dr G, seems you're getting on a bit better than I am - my device won't let me copy all the files into the new folder. Noticed that I can receive but no longer send email, even after deleting and reinstalling my account, but that could equally have been caused by the htc home proxy files I was playing with!
I feel a hard reset coming on...

Strange Crash

I　ｈａｖｅ　ｂｅｅｎ　ｒｕｎｎｉｎｇ　ｄ－ｔｗｏ＇ｓ rom for a while now and it is working great for me. Last night I tried to connect to live messenger and it went a bit crazy. Now it will only get to the today screen and then it hangs. I am looking around the site for a solution but I just wanted to ask here as well..
I know a hard reset will get me going again, problem is some text messages from last night that I really really dont want to lose.
I think it may be relatedto xpuscaler, but I dont really know. Activesync will not connect
The ideas I think may help me are:
1. can i use something like tty to get into the machine and either take the sms and contacts file or remove xpuscaler from the startup?
2. Can i use the clean registry without the format storage option from the hard reset menu? would this destroy my contacts and sms?

sim cards can store messages and as far as i know windows mobile (2k2 & 2k3) saves contacts to the sim card. check it in another phone if the stuff is stored there and if it is HR or reflash your unit.

1. as far as i know, there is no way to access files or folders remotely unless the device is fully booted, so, no mtty, no accessing in bootloader mode
2. yes you can use that option, that is a pretty good idea actually, because while the registry might contain startup information, it does not contain your sms or contacts.
another thing is, always keep your contacts synced, so they can never be the issue, and for sms, i recommend either to sync them too, or regularly make a backup with pimbackup, of course, this advise does not help you right now, but it might avoid issues like this in the future. since we are not carrying around normal phones like nokia, SE, ... and play around with custom roms, we must always be ready to perform a hard reset.
but back to the topic, unfortunately, the BA offers no "Safe Mode", as known of windows pcs, so avoiding the startup. you can try tricking the BA to do something else first, if the registry clearing does not work, you could put an extrom to your SD card and maybe the extrom startup will be first. maybe an extrom containing the same or a newer version of xcpuscalar will uninstall the current version and install the new version with the standard settings, and since the extrom shuts down everything else, it might just work.
and kind as i am, i actually built an extrom for you, just unzip and copy to the sd card, if it does not work, rename the folder from EXTROM to 2577 and it will work.

In the time since last post I have been able to get it working at the today screen but nothing will load.. maybe 520mhz made the processor die? have been running at full speed for a few weeks now..
You are right about the backup, I usually have pimbackup automated to backup to my sd everyday, but I hadnt got around to it since I installed this ROM. Typical luck! I wouldnt really care but I have some important sms that I need to recover..
@ares93 unfortunatly I dont save to my sim card as I have too many contacts to do that. And I dont think my sim could store my four years of sms that I seem to still have...

Well unfortunately the extrom didnt help so I bit the bullet and did a registry clean from the hard reset menu. It now boots and I have removed lots of apps to try to get rid of any clashes.. at the moment It appears to be completely normal until you try to run anything. mshome is working smoothly, the start menu is working, some settings panels will load, but I cant get it to run anything..
anyone seen this before?
Does anyone know if i can take a complete image of the device at this state and restore it later after i start really messing with things

In the end a hard reset didnt work, so I reflashed and its all running smooth, lost some important documents, but it was all i could do.
lesson learned, remember to schedule back ups for everyday to sd

it is portable, just put the exe on your sd card, no installation needed, also it allows you to back up you entire device, and restore individual items, like sms, for that matter.
if you want to make a full backup that would completely restore your device after a hard reset, with all settings, programs...
you should try SPB backup. there is a trial version at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/backup/ that lasts for 14 days, that should be enough for your matters now. the only thing you need to know about spb backup is: you cannot restore a backup on another rom because it also saves the entire windows folder and that varies from rom to rom.
pimbackup, however can make universal backups that can be restored on other roms, other windows mobile versions from wm2003 to wm6.5.3, even other windows mobile based devices.

I need help! I can't install any software!!!

And after delete temp files and clean registry, I can't install any software.
Any try finish after while with "install unsuccessful"

Also - make sure your device (actually, your wm version) is capable of runing software you are trying to install.
Anyway - just hard reset your device. It will be most likely impossible for us to guess what is missing. Propablly there is a big mess in your windows mobile now and I don't know of any method to return it to original state except of hard reset. It will be fastest method, and your software won't be deleted if you installed it on your sd/mmc card. Most of it will be still working too - you will only have to make shortcuts.

No clue. But I'm pretty sure that installation will take much less efford and time that any attempts of fixing os.
Did you make sure, that it's not becouse of your os version, that you cannot install software? For example, try totall commander, if it won't install, then hard reset your device.
By the way, why not give wm6 a try? wm5 is in my opinion outdated, and the cooked wm6 roms are not really unstable or anything.

unfortunately total commander not installed.
So, only hard reset left...
I will do it in next month cos I need CoPilot for few week now.

I'm not sure. It depends of what backup contains.
If I were you, I would just leave device like it is for now. If you really can't afford to have CoPilot corrupted, then it's the best solution for now. Just do hard reset when you will be able to.

easyiest thing to do is: =]
Step 1: Start -> Settings --> System? --> ClearPhone / hardres
Step 2: type in: 1234
Step 3: What till the ROM has reloaded
Step 4: Formate your SD card to default settings But change the formate to: FAT32
Step 5: Reload Copilot 7, and see if the problem is fixed or persists

OK, problem solved!
I made full backup, and reset my xda to factory seating and ROM.
Then I restored backup and every thing working very well now.
