I want to use Windows Live Messenger on my Atom Exec. However, I have to import all contacts from WLM into Contacts of my PDA. Now the Contacts are a lot of mess because I already have around 300 people in my phone and now there're additional 200. It's slow and very very difficult to navigate when I want to phone someone. Is there a workaround for this? I've tried using categories. However, when I close and reopen Contacts, the filter is restored to All Contacts.
Thanks.
Do you mean to say that you now have 500 unique contacts, or is it just that you had 300 contacts and the 200 you imported over duplicated some of them? So do you just have too many contacts?
Well I can think of two things.
First is to use Voice Command. With Voice Command, all you need to do is say, "Call Contact-Name at Mobile" without ever having to go through your contact list. However it is not always practical in all situations.
The other suggestion is to set the "View By" option to Company, then you filter using the Company feature. This "filter" doesn't refresh when you exit the Contact list, so this might help you out.
Some are duplicates. I think it is tedious to get rid of duplication, that is I have to go through all of the contacts. So, I prefer having the phone not displaying imported contacts and just display what I originally have.
Thanks a lot, I'll try justing View by Company.
Ps: Erm.. Is there anyway to set the Company of multiple contacts? Just realize I have 328 Phone contacts and 278 MSN Contacts.
Hmm I think you have to do them one by one.
My suggestion is to do the editing in Outlook and sync that with the phone. But whichever works faster. Hopefully someone has a better fix for this!
Sync the contacts between Windows Live and WM is a hard work when you have 100 more contacts. Besides that, I think Windows Live for Windows Mobile is much better than pocket msn....
me too face this problem!!
I'm very like to use Windows Live Messager on my PPC, but mobile contacts will auto import more contacts from live messager, so i'm very dislike it.
I don't know how to set don't import contacts from Live messager.
Now i'm switch back to old Windows Messager.

I can't find an easy way to display my list of people I phone (about 110) without it being mixed in with all my contacts that Outlook has gathered from email (1766). I can call them up via SIM manager but it takes about 30 seconds to build the list .... and I'm not sure whether people I add in here are reflected in my Contacts and vice versa. I'm sure there's a market for an app that manages email and phone numbers separately
Mike
why ?
i moved all my sim contacts to outlook as soon as i got the xda
havent had any reason what so ever to have any on the sim
Two reasons really:
Searching through a huge list while driving is much more difficult than it used to be on my ordinary cellphone with just 100 plus entries, and secondly MS Voice Command (I think) has to build a database for all 1700 outlook contact entries - I think this might be why it's misbehaving.
...... but I don't see anyone else complaining about this, so maybe I'm just working in some weird way
Mike
Create a sub folder in outlook, and move all your email contacts to that folder, then of course you'll need to tell outlook, through the options, the location of the new folder to use for your email address book.
Then leave all your phone contacts in the default contact folder, and this is the one active sync uses when syncing.
This is all due to a limitation in Active Sync whereby you can't specify the folder to be used for syncing, even though, of all things, Nokia PC Suite will do this, whilst microsoft's own solution WON'T.
The other alternative some use, is to use CATEGORIES.
By tagging all your phone contacts with a category label, say for example phone, then you CAN set up activesync so that when it syncs, ONLY contacts of a certain Category are synced.
Hope this helps fit your problem.
Hey .... both of those suggestions sound good. I will experiment. Am I right in thinking though, that I then won't have any email addresses at all in my XDA2. I guess I can live with this, as I'm generally only replying to emails with the XDA2
Mike
the way i do it is to have a category in outlook; i use the category of peronal which is out of the box outlook and then in active sync you have the option of synching only people in a categoy. i have outlook 2003

Er that depends.
Now I'm not sure what your original question meant?
The follow up implies that you do want Email address contacts on the XDA2.
So in simple terms, either you do want them, or you dont.
If you want a more prescriptive choice, let me know a bit more detail of what you are hoping to acheive, and I will let you know if there is a way or a workaround for it....
If only SOME contact records containing an Email address are needed by you on the XDA2, then just also tick them as a "Phone Contact" in the Category field, and these will then sync accross if you use Categories as the method.
Let me know exactly waht you mean...
actually your summary of what I want is pretty spot on. A few email addresses and ALL my phone contacts on the XDA. All my email addresses on the PC (I don't really care about the telephone numbers being on the PC). I followed your advice - but didn't think it through properly. I deleted all my contacts on the XDA, then set active sync on the PC to synchronise only the contacts I'd marked as phone contacts. Of course when it sync'd it decided to wipe out ALL the contacts on the PC. No matter - I have a backup - but incidentally I found that with just the 118 contacts from my SIM card loaded into the XDA, both Voice Command and Fonix were dramatically imroved.
Mike
If you open contacts, and then tap on the w, m, h, or e, you will see the available contact details for each person. Just set it to display what you want and it will be remembered between syncs.
IE. Joe Bloggs with a mobile (m), e-mail (e) or work phone (w), home phone (h). If you want the mobile phone number displayed, tap on the letter and choose M.

My apologies if this subject has been discussed before.
My Outlook Contacts currently holds about 2,100 records from around the world, which are primarily business contacts. As it would not be practical to sync everything to my imate, I put the most frequently called contacts into a custom category and sync that category only.
It has become a problem, however, when I need to have access to a contact which is not in my ppc and I have to wait to get to my pc.
Is there a way to segregate selected phone contacts for access by the ppc Contact software, and then have a separate contact database where I can put the rest of my 2,100 contacts for access anytime I want to, with full phone features?
To put it in another way, is there a ppc facility or a 3rd party software which can create and keep updated a Contacts database, with full phone features, but is separated from the regular ppc Contacts database (which is accessed by the phone)?
Would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.
Not sure what the problem is, I have over 2.5K Contacts and still less than half my memory is used.
All of my Calendar, Tasks and the last 3 weeks of email.
My Contacts are also business related and are heavily Categorised with some Contacts being in 4 different Categories.
I'm using ActiveSync 3.7.1
No problem
I have the same numbers of contacs and I synch them everyday...
Synchronizing 2,100 is not a problem at all. What I want is not to see all of these 2,100 contacts everytime I want to dial a number through the Contacts directory. I want only about 4 dozen most-frequently called number to appear on this directory, with the rest in a separate database, referable only when I need to.
My question: Is this possible?
If you put [Categories] on your Contacts, you can view them by Category. The default is ALL Categories. e.g. I copied the ones on my SIM card to OL and gave them a uniquie Category - "AAA", so they'd be at the top of the list of Categories.
Then when I go into my Phone Book on the XDA, the first thing I do is change the selection from ALL Categories to "AAA".
Works for me.
I just joined the android family.
And i was wondering is there is a easy way to import my contacts with pictures and appointments and sms messages from my xperia to my magic?
thnx!
Its a few steps sadly...
1. Sync your winmo with your pc and outlook, this will get your calendar and contacts in outlook.
2. export your contacts as a csv file and then import into google using web interface. Tip create a group for your phone contacts, as by default google syncs everyone you have ever emailed. I call mine 'Phone Contacts'. On the handset you can say only sync contacts in xxx groups. This way they stay nice. You can then reassign your contacts photos in the web contacts page. These will sync down to your phone.
3. install google sync (http://dl.google.com/googlecalendarsync/GoogleCalendarSync_Installer.exe), this will then sync your outlook calendar with google, which will then sync with your phone
As for sms etc, sorry can't help you there. But you might want to look at this (http://code.google.com/p/android-sms/) sms backup program. stores all your sms's in google under a label called SMS.
Thanks

pfff,.....
Ok
Thank you for your reply!
I guess this is still faster then manual input.
For SMS: if you have or plan to have root access to your android phone: http://android.modaco.com/content/software/288916/windows-mobile-sms-migrator-beta-1/
Cheers.

http://www.vufone.com/ supported windows mobile and android handsets.
sync using winmo, then do a full download using Android.
Granted its not free, but its an excellent took to use, and for $20 per year it can't be knocked!

Hi, everyone. I'm using this phone for a couple of weeks and i cannot say that i am not happy. There are some problems but i'm trying to fix them. One of the problems is that when i connected to my MSN (Windows Live Messenger), all my MSN contacts were downloaded and added to my main telephone contacts. Every time i am searching for a friend to call and go to contacts, i see 200 useless MSN contacts. Is there a way i can set my contacts only to show my real contacts and not MSN friends? Also, is there a way to show or select only SIM contacts and not ALL?
I don't use MSN but I suspect there are sync settings that you can turn off contacts from syncing.
You may want to consider "MyPhone" for syncing contacts.
Also, these devices suck out of the box so you may also want to consider a custom ROM, eventually.
I have deselect Contacts to be Sync under "Microsoft MyPhone", but still i cannot uncheck the option to save my contacts under "Windows Live" Options.
Apparently once your sync options are set in Windows Live, they are no longer configurable (greyed out).
I see 2 possible options;
Clean up your MSN list, or..
Hard reset and cofigure not to sync contacts from MSN.
Hi, i having a problem to sync my contacts, text messages, etc from my old OS (windows mobile 6.5) to WP7. I have backup my contacts and text messages to Myphone app, but WP7 seems don't have the app. So how can I syn my thing since WP7 don't have the desired app? Did anyone have ideas to help me solve this problem?
Check is WM7 is what you need...
That's a big WM7 issue. As far as I know (I just flash it yesterday and went back to droid) the only way to sync all is to use the "cloud", Gmail or Exchange. No way for the moment to synch anything with your computer!
The job to port WM7 is awsome, it works very nicely but the OS itself is crappy.
My HD2 became a toy for music, hotmail etc...
But as a computer peripheral it's useless (I need something which doesn't send all my contacts and appointments to a third party company as MS or google).
Check what you need in order to decide if WM7 is for you or not.
***please don't misunderstand my post, the port of WM7 is a great job! it's only the usage I need from my phone which is not compatible with this OS but all was working as it has to, fully activated by MS, access to market... really great job***
but maybe soon...
Regarding the amount of complains from "pro" users on the MS Forum, they may update Zune to sync more than just music, pictures...
So wait for updates from MS or third party (SpriteBackup, ...) apps to give the ability to backup/restore (at least) or sync directly with a computer.
Don't forget WM7 is still a new OS.
i am using gmail to sync my contacts =)

I tried Gmail and it's work, but I think the contact pictures are with poorer quality.

You can also sync through LIVE. Try this for better pictures Although Gmail is a more universal solution of you plan to go back to Android or have a second phone with this OS as I do

Exactly my problem too. I can save contacts with the usual number xxx xx xxx, and it works all good until i get a text from the very same number, but with country code added.. +47xxx xx xxx is not recognized as xxx xx xxx.. and the other way around again.. hoping for a fix soon
does someone know how to sync microsoft myphone with wp7.....cause i have all my contacts and sms backuped there....:S and i cant find a way to sync them with wp7 or Live services....any ideas?
You can't. Myphone is only for Windows Mobile, not Windows Phone. The best you can do is to log in on your pc and transfer your contacts to hotmail or gmail, then sync. Don't know what you can do about your texts at the moment.
Caller ID

You can fix this in the registry by setting the following:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone]
"CallIDMatch"=dword:7
Worked for me
thnx to xboxmod
A work around?
I posted this elsewhere and didnt get any real work arounds.....
(I returned my OE WP7 and returned to HD2 on WM6.5).
However, just a thought.....
MyPhone is only for WM6.5 but using ActiveSync you can sync mail, contacts, calendar & tasks with Outlook. I read on the Microsoft forum that you can download Hotmail Contacts to Outlook, and export from Outlook to Hotmail.
If I were to return to WP7, which no doubt I will do:
Contacts:
I would Sync WM6.5 with Outlook, then upload them to the Hotmail account I would be using on WP7. I remember (and may stand corrected) that when you register the Hotmail account on the device, the Contacts are automatically downloaded.
WM6.5 using Windows Live allows you to download Hotmail contacts to my phone, so I guess they would also sync.
Doesnt cure my original issue that I wanted my Phone and Hotmail contacts seperate. I may have to create an additional Hotmail account for that?
Calendar:
On my version of Outlook, I can have two calendars showing - one for the PC which is synced to my phone and one which is my Hotmail. I havent found a way to automatically sync them, but its easy tp drag an appointment from say my PC calendar to Hotmail and therefor on to WP7.
Regarding texts, theres no way like MyPhopne, just copy what you can to your sim card I am afraid.
Does that sound like it might work?
I was able to sync my contacts from my WM6.5 to wp7. Used to have all my HD2 contacts saved in Outlook contacts. I exported all those contacts as an excel (or you can do it as an csv-comma separated values) file to my documents. Then I created a Windows Live ID on my desktop. It is basically a hotmail account. Imported contacts to my Windows Live ID account from my documents. So all your contacts are saved online in your Windows Live account. Then I signed into Windows Live on my WP7 HD2 and imported all my contacts from my online account.
I also want to know. Currently I have Outlook stored my WM6.5 contacts, calendar, tasks, and PIMBackup stored my texts and call logs. Any 3rd party WP7standalone app available to do the similar. I think all the above addressed less than 1/3 of the requirements here.
