my t-mobile Vario II crashed the other day as I was replying to a text message, nothing unusual there, wm5 has been known to crash once in a while.
so I soft reset it, and it reboots.
But now, after it's all finished loading, it would run for a few seconds, only to crash again.
I reset again, but the freezing up follows shortly.
Nothing I do stops this happening.
So in desperation I go for the Hard Reset.
Everything gets wiped and it reinstalls all the T-Mobile stuff.
But now I have no signal,
I take the SIM card out and put it in an old nokia, and that works fine, i receive two text messages which I think were due around the time of the first crash.
The texts are normal texts from friends, saying hello and stuff.
So it's not the SIM card, it must be something to do with the phone.
I've just tried the SIM card in the phone again, and i notice on the T-Mobile boot screen it says the usual stuff.
M 05 S 04 B 06 D1.21, but just before it blinks it says No GSM.
I searched the forums and, this seems to be a problem people can get when tryting to unlock or upgrade their phones rom.
Problem is, I've not tried to do either.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Am I going to have to mess around with ROM upgrades, all of which scares me greatly.
Or should I just send the phone back to T-Mobile for repair.
quang.
I've just checked to see if i can read the contacts of the SIM card.
Tapping on SIM Manager doesn't work,
nothing happens.
Which leads me to believe that maybe the SIM reader on the phone is damaged in some way.

Hi,
On my XDAII (1.72) I sometimes experience a not responding phone/SMS application or radio stack.
People trying to call me are instantly redirected to the voicemail, and if I try to make eiter a call or send a text message, respectively the phone application is stalling or the SMS 'Send' button stays in the 'pressed' state.
Soft-resetting the phone or toggling the 'turn off radio' function re-establishes the radio.
Does anyone knows of a solution?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and possibly rewarded with a 6-pack Heineken beer
weird, mines just done the same thing. I sent an sms and nothing. I was then taken to the phone screen and it said something like invalid sim something.
I'm wondering if the sim card is not locked in place. I was fiddling around with mine yesterday and maybe forgot to lock the sim card in place.
Just a thought but maybe worth checking
what radio version do you have ? I recently have the problem that when people call me, the ringtone goes for about 2 seconds, then restarts, etc.
Meanwhile I can do nothing ( green button don't work) . When the caller hangs up my phone returns to the normal state.
I use radio 1.18. Thinking of downgrading to 1.17 which people say is more stable.

Click to collapse
I'm using Radio version 1.17, ROM version 1.72.00WWE
The SIM is firmly locked into place
ah.....
Hello folks,
I have the same problem now for a week... It's driving me crazy... At
some point in time during the night or the day my Qtek2020 gets weird.
The result is that people trying to call me can't connect but to viocemail,
and I can't receive SMS. The only way I can see that I am having this
problem is that whenever I try to send a SMS I get a message "your SMS
cannot be sent", and if I try to make a call, the phone seems to dial out
normally the first second, but then the DIAL-button (which is color-less)
becomes green again...
Please, if someone knows what's wrong or if someone had the same
problem and solved without having to default the whole thing, please
let me know what is the solution.. It is really annoying, so I now have
to randomly reset my phone throughout the day.
PS: my battery is now on 4% so I have to look for my charger, and
after that I can supply with info about radio-version etc. I am running
WM2003 by the way, and I've had no problems like this before, this
unit has been working fine until now. I guess it's a sw-bug? And I
am also wondering if this problem occurs whenever I pass a place
with low signal.. hmm, it's so annoying..
Thanks for any help!
Fred
I've been having problems similar to the OP for 2-3 weeks now (found this thread in a search before posting). It's damned annoying, as it means you can't really trust your phone - am I meant to reset every morning, or more frequently? It seems an intermittent problem, in so far as I've been receiving and making calls as normal, and then you someone asks 'did you get my text?'. Gritting teeth, you call the phone from a landline to find that calls are going straight to voicemail. After a soft reset all missing texts are received immediately, and calls can again be received.
When in this state other PDA functions seem to work as normal. However, I suspect that the power display is "suspended" too. On performing a soft reset after experiencing this problem today, I immediately got "your battery is extremely low", whereas before the reset I recall it was around 50% (vBar image). As others have stated, one clue that not all is well is that sent texts do not get a "Message sent" confirmation.
I've been racking my brains as to what's changed recently on my PDA. For family reasons I've been making a lot more calls than usual, but I also added TomTom Navigator 5 a couple of months ago, and so have started intermittently using BT. But I don't use Sat Nav that frequently, and this problem seems more prevalent.
I'm conscious that I don't have latest and greatest ROM, etc, but am vary about attempting upgrades without strong reasons.
Has anyone seen and solved this issue?
Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the sim card? After a while dust and general wear and tear can mess them up. Also as it's obviously(?) a phone problem it might be beneficial to call your service provider for a new sim card.
That's what I had to do last week. Wish you the best anyway.
It can't have anything to with the sim card as I'm having this problem with a brand new sim card.
Hi,
I've been searching for some time now how to resolve my problem but without any result. The problem is that I have to wait very long time ( 1 - 24 hours ) to receive any sms even when the screen is on. Please tell me what should I check on my phone and how to resolve it. I’ve got a HTC Touch HD ( Blackstone )
Thanks
Anyone can help me ??
I think that has to do with your provider since your screen is on.
I remember this happening to me a few years ago, my provider asked me to input a series or numbers starting/beginning with * and # and the send key. Apparently it cleared up the sms cache of my mobile on the network.
I've spoke to my network provider and it seems to be ok but it is not ... still. Any other suggestions ?
Can you try a friend's SIM in it just to be sure? And try your sim in another phone.
ya worst case worst, hard reset or change ur sim cardd
ok .. .I'll try another sim, but this one is working on another phone.
I have a sim lock so i could only try another sim from the same operator and it is still not working. But my sim on another phone ... not htc ... is working perfectly. So what now ?
I'm not sure whether this could be the problem you are experiencing but it may be worth a try.
I'm with Orange and had a problem at the beginning of last week when I noticed some SMS messages weren't coming through for up to 24 hours whereas some continued to come through as normal (even from the same people). I also noticed that I had voicemail messages that I had not been notified of. Up until this point everything had been working fine so I contacted Orange. After a few pointless calls where they tried to send SMS messages to the phone with settings (not ideal if you're having a problem receiving them) I finally got through to somebody who explained that sometimes a problem can occur (he wasn't able to explain what unfortunately) and he provided a solution.
I was asked to delete all SMS messages from my phone (Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Deleted etc.) and enter in a code on my kepad which I believe may clear the SMS cache allowing system messages to come through. I then had to turn my phone off for 15 minutes then turn it back on. A system SMS then arrived which I had to delete, turn my phone off and back on again and the problem was solved.
From what I could gather from the guy at Orange it was a problem relating to the handset which can occasionally happen which may explain why your sim works correctly on another phone.
I hope that info is of some use to you.
and what was that code ?
Ok ... I think I’ve found the bug. I've done a hard reset and its working now. The problem was that I’ve put my sim into the device while installing touch flo 3D and this was the problem. This time I've done the hard reset without the sim and SD card. And I put them back when device was ready to run. In that way the problem just disappeared. So I think that my sim card was making some installation problem. Now I receive messages immediately. This solution also resolved another problem with backup. I'm using a Sprite Backup and before hard reset I couldn't make a backup ... some of the files was missing or couldn't be attached to the backup file. Now it's working perfectly. I'm writing this because I’ve found another topic about backup problem but without any solution. So maybe someone will find this threat.
So if You encountered problems with messages take out Your SIM card and SD cart and do the Hard Reset and wait until the second reset ( first reset is for WM6.1 install and the second is for HTC Customization ) After that put Your SIM and SD back. This will also solve problems with backup and maybe other problems.
Hi there,
I have this strange problem with my HTC Elf. The problem existed with the original ROM (5.0) and after my upgrade to 6.5 as well.
It started once a Month, but now it's twice a day.
If i receive or make a call, receive or send a SMS the device just shuts down immediately. (like a hard reset).
The device then automatically starts up, i get the "Smart mobility" screen and then it starts over again. The boot cycle runs endless, until i remove the battery and start again. Sometimes i need to remove/replace the battery 3 or 4 times to get it booting up again. (Doing this booting drains a lot of battery power)
If i remove the SIM Card, everything works fine for hours and booting isn't a problem at all. So I believe accessing the SIM Card somehow craps the device out. The boot-cycle seems to happen in the last stage of booting, when the device first tries to access the SIM card. (That's something i have to suspect, cause there is no way to log the booting).
I don't believe that it's connected to the ROM Upgrade to 6.5 i did, as the problem happened in 5.0 as well... (btw. everything is much faster and more light-weight since the 6.5 upgrade. It's just great.)
Here are my questions:
- Is there something, I could log the boot process, to see what's the last action when it starts over again?
- Is there something like an event log in windows, where I see the last action or even failure / exception, before the device restarts while doing a call / writing an SMS?
- Did anyone see this happen before?
Thanks for any input!
Hi
Have you tried to change the Sim card or use another one just in case the sim is the problem?
Hi Tito,
I plan to swap SIM's next weekend. But i don't get how a SIM can crash the whole thing. I would understand getting errors like "Can't read SIM" but auto-resetting the whole device?
Anyhow, I'll post an update after trying another SIM. The whole thing is, that it's not reproducible by a specific action one could take. So if the device keeps up even for 2 days with a spare SIM - that doesn't mean the SIM's chip is the problem. Just an indication...
Thanks,
mc
Hi
Please do post the result
I had the same problem (endless reboot) on my Elf. I solved it by replacing the battery.
Hi,
well it's like always. If you need the problem, you cannot reproduce it.
The device wasn't crashing even once on the weekend.. Either with my own SIM or with another one.
The battery thing is interesting. As soon, as the problems start reoccurring, I've got now a spare SIM card to test. If this fails, I'm able to test with another battery in march.
I'll post any results.
thanks,
mc
I have the same problem...and also struggles to find a signal. Did you solve the problem yet?
same problem
I have the same problem and !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, the thing is i upgraded to the HD2 and didn't use my elf pretty much lately.
I changed my provider and got a new SIM but that didn't solve the issue. So I can exclude the fault being in the ROM or the SIM card.
When the elf was crashing I couldn't start it up. It was booting, and as soon as it tried to register itself in the Network, it crashed again. However, when connecting it to a power source (charger or pc) and booting it up, it went fine through and was able to register in the network.
That brings me to the idea, the even if the battery is full at 100% it might have a flaw and doesn't bring enough energy, when the device is scanning for the available networks.
So next time, I'm in china, I'll get a new battery pack for my elf - however, it's no more that important as my HD2 is running pretty fine.
Hope it's something which can help you.
cheers,
mc
Hi guys, I got a little problem on my hands. Ive had the HD2 for several months now, absolutely love the phone. I have a problem as to when I do a soft reset for my phone, or any time my phone is turned back on, I get two new txt messages. Problem is, is that the messages are not new at all, one is from 129 which I read on here is from visual voice mail, not that big of a deal for me. But the second message I always get, was the last txt from my ex girlfriend, about 2 months ago, which to say the least almost got me kicked in the gonads this morning when my current girlfriend turned on my phone. I did a search and got nothing on this, anyone ever experience this issue? Or is this some black magic voodoo from my ex trying to give me a headache?
I get this on my tmobile hd2 also, it has a little sim card icon next to it, So what I usually do is click and hold the text and select move to phone. Then ill click and hold and delete it. Sometimes it works but i cant seem to get the 129 to go away. it usually only pops up when i hard reset.
Have the same problem, any resolve?
seen this myself, but strangely only once, and that was after dozens of flashes where it didnt happen (although they were custom roms, so maybe had 'show sim messages' turned off, whereas teh time it happened was when i flashed back to stock, where it no doubt isn't turned off.)
Just one txt, about 4 mnths old, that was on my sim card. I put my sim in an old (simple) phone and deleted it from there.
Heh the same in my case. I resolved this yesterday, when i remove SIM card and plug it to my old Nokia N82, enter to SIM Messages and delete it.
Now when i have my SIM card in HD2 back, after SR i don't having this pissing off fake new messages.
Okay.... so I am having this weird problem with my G2. Starting 2 days ago, I am no longer able to make/receive calls or txt messages on my phone. I have 4 bars showing for signal status and data is connected. I am able to access the internet and download from the market, but if I attempt to make a phone call, nothing happens. The only way I get notified that someone attempted to call me is if they leave a voicemail and I get notified by Google Voice.
I have tried flashing a different radio as well as completely wiping the device and reinstalling the Virtuous ROM (as well as tried the new OTA rooted ROM here on XDA) but still cannot get calls/txts to work.
Anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing this?
Maybe a bad SIM? Not sure if that would cause no voice/SMS but still have data. But it wouldn't hurt to go to a T-Mob store and ask for a new SIM, as I think they usually will give you one for free.
Funny you should mention that. I completely wiped the device one last time and then reinstalled the Virtuous 2.0 ROM. Again I had data but no voice/SMS. After a reboot my status bar indicated that the SIM was not valid. I turned the phone off, removed the battery and SIM card and cleaned all the dust out. I then put the SIM card and battery back in and was able to get my voice/SMS connection.
I think I might still try to get a new SIM card just in case. Maybe the dust wasn't the issue and I just happened to get lucky after removing then reinserting the SIM.
