I have several questions that I should ask Cingular but I think I will ask them here first.
All I have is the Media Net Max Bundle (Unlimited) with 200 text messages 19.95 per month.
1. I have a MSN Live account. When using Pocket MSN does this cost me text messages or any extra cost?
2. When talking on the phone I cant use the internet connection, but I connected my USB to the PC with an active connection and bam I can surf while talking on the phone. Does this cost anything in MB used at Cingular?
3. Where do I increase the time the screen stays on and the keyboard stays lit?
4. With Outlook or POP3 email I cant find where to setup SMTP to send emails. I need to setup 4 pop emails to have them check automatically.
Has anyone ever experienced and GSM buzzing noise on their phone, PDA or Razr?
Sorry for the questions.
Redneck
1.
Pocket MSN is connecting either via WLAN or GPRS - you do not send your messages via SMS, so, in worst case you pay for GPRS (depending on your data plan).
2.
Not sure how you can enjoy talking and surfing at the same time on the 8125 but first: You can stay online while having a phone call via GPRS or WLAN. Prices depend on your data plan - you should contact Cingular for an actual price list!
3.
You can adjust the backlight by tapping on START - SETTINGS - SYSTEM - Backlight. An adjustment of the keyboard backlight time is not possible.
4.
Click on START - MESSAGING, then on MENU at the bottom right and select EXTRAS - NEW ACCOUNT - here you set up your email and messaging accounts.
No, I did not experience that!
I assume with my media bundle being unlimited then hopefully no additional charges will be there.
Thanks, Junner

I've setup POP3 but have no idea how to setup hotmail. Is this possible? When I've tried it's asked for Outgoing mail info and incoming mail info - but thats for pop3 right?
Has anyone done this before?
You have to install a program called HTTP Mail Provider.
In settings, enter hotmail (or msn if your address is @msn) for both incoming and outgoing mail.
Please tell me more about setting up hotmail in XDA - I have found the software and downloaded it to my laptop, however the 6x files are unreconised by my laptop, theres no setup.exe for example? Can you give me some more info please?
Thanks
HTTPMail Provider
HTTPMail Provider
1- Get the software from www.pocketgear.com
2- After installing it on your device, open the inbox and set a new account
3- Follow the steps. Once you reach step 4, choose HTTP for Account type
4- In step 5, enter hotmail for both incoming and outgoing mail if your addres is @hotmail, or msn fot both if your address is @msn
That's it
Use pocket MSN. They make a hotmail inbox in pocket outlook for you

Pocket MSN looks great but it could be pricey.
I have istalled the "HTTPMail Provider 1.0", however I keep getting this error when trying to connect..
Inbox
Unspecified error
(80004005
Error Source: Connection Manager
Status: Connecting
I then click OK and find that I need to try again. When I do log in again, Pocket PC just shows me that I'm loggin on and when I go to disconnect as it takes forever, my inbox crashes!!! I then close my inbox and open it again, and after quite a few minutes of waiting I get this error...
Inbox
The operation timed out
(80042002)
Error Souce: HTTP
Status: Logging on.
I don't know if this is a problem but I have not setup my HTTP access, only POP3 and MSN messenger. Can anyone help please?
Can't send mail
Even if I mention hotmail in outgoing server, it still doesn't send mail successfully. It's kinda wierd but my GPRS service provider do not have any SMTP server fot users. I get the following error when sending mail though HttpMail... "One or more arguments are invalid (80070057), Error Source: MAPI, Status: Sending outgoing messages". Please anybody help...
First connect to GPRS using your Pocket PC internet connection
then open inbox and start send and receive
OK I managed to fix the problem - I changed my connection from Work to Internet. however, I have another querry for those who know about this. I have set my hotmail account options to automatically connect and check email every 15 minutes but it says this...
Note that connecting automatically may result in higher connection charges.
Now I understand that my connection is through GPRS which I've been told you only pay for downloading data and do not pay for connection or time spent connected. Can anyone please confirm this is true because I don't want a huge bill at the end of the month!
Thanks again
Paul.
Well, we are discussing another problem, here.
I don't know about O2, but, usually, GPRS is sold by packages of total amount of download (40MB, 80MB, ...) per month, and not according to time use.
So, if you have a GPRS subscription, time does not count. Actually, you can keep your phone always connected.
When you add a new modem connection (using Start/Settings/Connections), in the modem selection, do you have a Cellular line (GPRS) available ?
ps: When you say you receive e-mail headers, is it by e-mail or by SMS ?
I recieve my emails by GPRS
Regarding email header this is just a cropped email limiting the download to about 2K. My network O2 allows me to download up to 100K free, after that they charge per Mb of data or I can buy discounted packages to save money. I just want to make sure theres no connection charge for always staying connected and retrieving my email every 15 minutes!
Yes I have Cellular line (GPRS) available.
It doesn't matter if you connect every hour or 15 minutes or stay connected all the time. What makes the difference is the amount of kb you are downloading each time you send and receive e-mail. Probably, whether you are receiving usual pop3 or HTTP, they are all part of the 100k package or whatever. So if you limit your messages to headers only, you would be saving a lot. But even if you exceed your package limit, it must not be expensive. In my country, the cost is 1$ per 1 MB.
Hi
I hope you don't think me too much of a plank but I've recently bought an Xda2 and am confused as to the best method of getting my email's.
<sigh> not another idiot I hear you say but as far as mobile anything's are concerned I'm a dummy!
I don't want to dial into my ISP every time so if any of you 'Patient' people can help me set up my Xda, I would be most grateful.
Best Regards
Ian G
It's quite easy providing you have a bit of information about your ISP.
Open your inbox - doesn't matter which one, active sync or SMS.
Use the Accounts -> accounts... menu option to open your accounts
Add a new one with the new button.
First settings page: Enter your email address
It'll now try and auto-configure your email settings. I have never known this to work, so hit the skip button.
On the next screen, enter your name as you want it seen, and your ISP's username and password (check the save password too).
I presume this is a regular POP3 account, so leave POP3 selected on the next page, and give it a name - this will eventually appear as a new set of inbox/sent items/outbox/drafts once you've finished configuring things.
Next page, enter your ISP's incoming mail server address, probably or .
For outgoing mail - and I'm presuming you're with o2 here, use smtp.o2.co.uk. Outgoing mail servers usually only allow people to send mail when they are logged on, so your ISP's outgoing mail server will not allow you to send mail if you're connected via o2 gprs. To send mail via the usual GPRS connection, this must be o2's mail server. Leave the domain blank.
Click the options button and on the options page select whether you want to check for mail periodically (Note, due to a crap design decision at microsoft, only the set of email folders that was most recently viewed is synchronised). Select "The Internet" as the connection (presuming you want to use GPRS or Internet passthrough, and you haven't change the default O2 connections).
On the next options page, leave each checkbox blank, and on the final page you can opt to receive whole messages or just the header + a certain amount of included message body.
Once you click finish, things should start working, and you should be able to select the new ISP's inbox, write messages, and send them with the icon at the bottom of the screen.
Let us know if you get into any problems.
Much obliged to you A.C
I will give it a go thanks for your patience!
Best Regards
Ian G
Set that up ok A.C
Now I get "Unable to connect: you have no modem entries created and no network card present"
What do I do now A.C - bearing in mind that I haven't entered anything into the Xda2 yet, only got it this afternoon!
Thank you
Ian G
PS - I would want to connect GPRS (I Think) <embarrased smile>
If you dont have any modem connections in settings/connections/manage existing connections, you will have to create one, tab new give it a name, chose celllular line gprs, tab next , acesspoint name! dont know about UK settings but here its: internet, tab next , well dont know what to use in your network, here we dont need to fill in anything, tab finish..Now if you then tab and hold you new connection there comes a pop up menu:delete / connect chose connect and if your settings are correct youll see ( after a info pop up) two arrows at your signal strengh indicator, and you are connected...to disconnect hold down your hang up button..using your inbox, send or recieve should start up your gprs connection automaticly..
Dont know if was any help, but anyway, good luck.

If you set your XDA II to auto connect every 'X' minutes to GRPS you WILL get huge bills if you pay as you go with GPRS.
I'm with O2 and pay for their 200 plan and I had a number of GPRS entries added to my online bill about 15 days behind every so often. It was claiming that I was connecting at midnight and downloading 3, 4, 5 and even 6Mb data during those times. I spent COUNTLESS hours trying to ask O2 to look into this problem as I wasn't using GPRS very much.
Turns out that at midnight the phone will connect & download chunks of data periodically if your phone has been set to auto connect to GPRS. O2 told me that this is a problem with this handset!
I hope this helps as this isn't something the O2 shop know about and neither do O2 customer service staff.
Can you tell a newbie like me where the setting for the auto-connect to GPRS is please?
Just want to make sure mine is not set.
You will need to do this for each email account you setup on your XDA II.
Navigate to your email settings as follows...
START/PROGRAMS/INBOX
bottom of the screen select ACCOUNTS & select an email account.
bottom of the screen select TOOLS/OPTIONS & select the ACCOUNTS tab.
Select your email account by name.
Navigate to Email Setup (4/4) & click the OPTIONS button.
OPTIONS (1/3)
Untick box "Connect and check for messages every:"
and your done.
A bit long winded but thats where you have the power to incurr HIGH GPRS bills by ticking that little box.
Hope this helps!
Thank you. I do have mine set to check every 60 minutes but I only download the headers. My GPRS bill hasn't been a problem.
I'm with Telstra in OZ and it costs me A15$ for 1MB inclusive per month. Additional is charged at 1.5c per KB but my bill hasn't exceeded A$35 for the month so far.
It will only check the email account if you leave the screen on the email account when you close PocketOutlook, so if you change it to SMS Inbox before closing PO and then turn off your phone it won't check email every XX mins.
OK HTC guru's.
I have finally recieved my Dopod 838 Pro after a very long wait. I have searched the forum (flame suit on) but still have a few questions which are niggling me.
Ok, first off should be the most simple. How do I instal skins? I feel so stupid here. I see that they are usually .tsk files, but where do I place them so I can find them in the Today menu?
Second, when I first started my PDA I had to do a setup, this asked me if I wanted a Pin or Password set. I skipped it (eager to get to the phone part), but now I can work out how to put it on. I have found under "lock" in the Personal Settings that you can set the pin or password, but it only allows me for set this to restore after a period of inactivity. How do I make it work after power on?
Third, email. My carrier (3 Mobile Australia) has an unlimited email pack which I have subscribed to which uses 3MMS settings. I have set it up and it sends and recieves beautifully using those settings. Except, that to send emails, I have to manually press send/recieve to clear the outbox. I have set the check for new incomming mail every minute, so it finds these ok (subject to problem 4 below), but outgoing mail is annoying. Any tips/hints?
Fourth, activesync/email. OK, now when the phone is not connected to my PC via activesync, the check for email every minute downloads any email perfectly. When I press the send/receive button, it clears my outbox perfectly. However, if the phone is connected to the PC by the activesync, I get a cannot connect or modem disabled error. This only happens if I try to use the email while connected to activesync. Any comments, better still, any solutions.
Cheers

Hey Fellow Aussie,
Im also on the 3 network but I am using a JASJAM. Im still having MMS problems (cannot receive them proprely).
Anyways, to answer some of your questions:
1. How do I instal skins? - put them (tsk's) in your My Documents folder or in the root of your microsd card. They should show up under the menu after that.
2. Pin or Password set - not sure how to do that after the PDA has been set up. I actually did a hard reset when I realised I couldnt find the option.
3. Email - I also use the $3 month unlimited sen/receive with 3email. I actually forward my corporate emails to my 3 email inbox, which I then download to my phone. When I send an email from my phone, the return address is my corporate email. Much cheaper than using data traffic with 3netaccess UMTS.
--- to answer your question about send/receive, the email wont get send out until a send/recevei has occured. If you have the option for auto-send receive (ive got mine set to 1 minute) then dont worry about it. After you write the email, it will be sent out shortly after that.
4. activesync/email - In MS Activesyn on your pc, you have to enable the "allow wireless connection on device when connected to desktop". This is avaialbe in the connection settings of MS activesync on your desktop. Ensure you are not connected to your PDA when you do this (as the option will not be available).
I hope this helps,.
Now do you have a few moments to help me out - specifically to 3 carrier settings. I have tried to do them manually but i havent managed to set it up 100%.
I have checked the extended ROMS on the wiki but they are generic ext.roms which do not have the 3 carrier settings. I know for a fact that 3 Australia tweak the shipped ext.rom to include set up files for their network.
Can you please copy all your files from you extended rom and email them to me. my email is .
if you havent unlocked/mounted your extended ROM you can do this with the fit4cat tweaker software. This software is available on the wiki I beleive. Or just use the extended ROM unlocker that is posted on the STICKY thread in this forum.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Which networks have their GPRS unrestricted? I'm currently on o2 and want to get my e-mail (Home e-mail server) on the move but o2 only allow you to access your o2 email address items. I moved from Virgin due to my parents complaining they could never get hold of me. I'm thinking of Orange because they have a similar choice to o2 of free texts when you top up, but am wondering is their GPRS unrestricted? Could I access my email on it?
Thanks,
Karl
You will need to use the Orange server for your outgoing email but you can download from any mail server - I know because that's what I do.
Thanks for your input TB. Am I right in thinking Orange's GPRS charge is £3/MB? I believe o2 is £2.35, but they do not allow access to other email servers except their own? Or am I wrong there and have been mislead by the internet?
I did have a tarriff of £1 per MB but I have switched to unlimited evening/weekend data for £5 per month.
The mail server thing at O2 seems to be a real pain. It's reasonable for them to expect you to use their outgoing server but on an unfettered internet connection, just about ANY incoming mail server should be fine, as is the case with Orange.
