Auto switch between VLAN and GPRS - P3600 General

Anyone know if the Trinity can seamlessly switch between WLAN and GPRS depending on network availability? I know the Imate PDA2K can - see http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3460

Yeah, it works, but it really depends on how you have your device setup and the ROM that you are running as to how the switch over behaves.

Up until the Radio ROM V1.38, I'd say this worked well, but with the new HTC, and custom ROM's with 1.38 and 1.41 Radio, it is a bit of a pain.
As is the norm with WM5, GPRS is on all the time, and in the absence of an Activesync or WLAN connection, will happily use GPRS. Turning on WLAN should make the data flow via that, but I now find that while GPRS is on, often nothing happens at all when I turn on the WiFi, as if both connections are deferring to each other. It often needs me to disconnect the GPRS connection before WiFi cuts in.
Turning WiFI off again seems to be OK- the GPRS connection re-establishes as needed.

The WLan problem is the reason that I haven't yet tried the new cooked roms. I'm still using the Dopod Test ROM along with the new 1.41 radio. My Trinity runs very well and everything works. GPRS is on...I can connect to Wifi, that works, connect to laptop via activesync, that works, disconnect activesync, then wifi works, disconnect Wifi, then GPRS works. I have also never had a problem with TomTom hanging, and most importantly my 4gb TopRam miniSD works flawlessly. Of course after all of the blah blah about memory cards, I'm wondering how long it will work...we'll see. I'm using the perfomance tweaks, the ATIfix and the bass fix.

Same thing here with the latest original HTC FRA ROM.
Same also with my Qtek9100.
The only thing I could not manage yet in the Trinity is to set up an automatic shutdown (disconnect) of the GPRS/UMTS data connection after a given time of no use to save the battery life.

Thats interesting!
I still had the same problem as mentioned above with the latest official HTC ROM. I had thought it was the Radio version, but as yours is OK, perhaps it is a hardware issue local to my device? My release Orange ROM worked fine though (but I had to get rid of teh horrid Orange stuff, some of which is in the ROM itself rather than the Ext_ROM)

I don't think it is a hardware problem. The thing is, I'm not usning an official HTC rom, it is a Dopod test rom that came out even before the first official Dopod GPS rom. I use it because since everything works, there was no reason to go looking for trouble . I've updated the radio to 1.41 and applied the performance tweaks, the atifix and bass fix. I remember at the time that the official Dopod and HTC rom came out that several people went back to the test rom because of stability, radio, and miniSD card issues. That being said I can't wait to try the new WM6 Trinity rom!

Band switch + time limit to come back to gprs.
I did not read the whole topic yet... I will try the soft today.
Thanks a lot Matterhorn
Edit: Installed and tested. Really great and helpfull tool.

Problems Using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Hi, I just bought a MDA Vario and downloaded the software to sim-unlock it. I've been using it on Vodafone for a few days and have some problems:
Wi-Fi:
I can turn wireless on, but when I then go to IE to start surfing, it tries to connect using GPRS instead of Wi-Fi. How do I get it to use Wi-Fi instead?
Bluetooth:
I can Sync my device to my PC using Active Sync 4.1 over USB, but when trying to do this over bluetooth, I keep getting told that the device can't find a an existing Bluetooth partnership, even though I've set one up (several times)! What could I be doing wrong?
ROMS:
I've got the T-Mobile ROM on my phone, but I'd rather have a standard (non-network specific) ROM. Where can I download such a ROM? Would ther ebe any issues in overwriting the T-Mobile ROM with a Standard one? Which ROM is the "best"?

If WiFi is on and connected successfully to the network, it should use WiFi. I sometimes find if I wander about, and the phone loses site of my Access Point without me noticing, the next time I request a webpage it will fire up GPRS. You say you're connected, but it sounds like the Vario doesn't think so. Are you sure you've got WEP/WPA keys correct, and that the Wireless AP isn't using MAC filtering? Have you been able to get onto the net with IE at all, or has it always tried to get out over GPRS instead?

When you pair the Vario with the PC, both ends will offer a list of Bluetooth profiles they support. When I tried with my laptop and a 3com BT dongle, despite it working fine with my old iPAQ, the Wizard didn't seem to think that the laptop offered the ActiveSync service (or maybe the laptop didn't think the phone did, I can't remember for sure). You need to make sure that the Vario (if that's the "device" that's complaining) believes the PC is offering ActiveSync as a Bluetooth service, or it will assume it's only paired with other phones, GPS's, headsets etc, but nothing with which it could activesync.

The ftp site here hosts a load of ROM's. I don't know of any that are noticeably better all around than any others. I have a Qtek phone, and although the later ROM fixes the BT voice-dial wake-up problem it also breaks, MMS and some bits of WiFi for some people. Others have installed the WWE version of a ROM and found that the keyboard doesn't match their hardware layout and some keys are wrong. They've then gone and broken button mappings trying to fix the keyboard problem. I know T-Mobile are the least subtle in their customisation, and many people seem to want to get rid of the pink look. I don't believe there is a clear winner in the ROM stakes. I've seen a few sigs that suggest people are starting to cook their own ROM with the GSM stack from one, the WiFi from another or whatever combination suits them. If you're up for doing the same, be my guest, but you may, unless you're experienced, find yourself worse off than you are now.
Have a look over in the "upgrading" forum and see what people seem to be using there. Be aware though, a lot of the "old timers" will be using I-Mate or Qtek devices which hit the streets before the O2 and T-Mobile variants, so they have had less device specific customisation done and were probabaly running a generic WWE (or localised) version anyway.
Hope that helps?

WIFI connection issues with Prophet (spv M600)

Hi all,
I have a big problem with my Prophet and its WIFI, I didn't manage to connect to anything.
First, I had the Orange French rom.
When i tried to connect to my hotspot with WPA protection, although the prophet could see the hotspot, try to connect to it, connection seemed to stay blocked... status was "connected to network" but no IP given (DHCP is activated on my hotpot).
Then I read that WPA wasn't well supported by WM5 so i put a WEP encryption on my hotspot. This time the prophet connect and an IP address appeared in wifi sttings, but connection reseted all the time... connected, not connected, connected again, not connected...
impossible to stabilise the connection.
I tried on another hotspot without encryption, and same thing, connection reseting again and again...
Now I've just tried with the last dopod rom which I've found right here, but no change, the wifi connection is impossible.
I'm kinda lost, dunno what's going wrong with something that should work without any problems...
Does someone ever seen something like this?
Could it be a material failure?
Thanks a lot for your help!!!
Cedrick
It was a hardware disfunction, replaced today with another prophet which works fine
New Prophet Revision out ?
Hello,
I Just got my XDA Neo (o2Germany) 2 days ago and because i´ve read about the Dopod Rom beeing faster, i upgraded immediatly.
The Problem now is the bad Wireless performance, i never get a good connection - Still if i am right next to the Router/Accesspoint...
Did i understand you right that this is a Hardware failure ?
Can I correct this with a different Rom ?
The Problem is that i cannot give it back to o2 now, because of the Dopod Rom - Maybe i have to try the Downgrade Method presented yesterday...
Can you give some more information about Wlan performance ??
THX !!
Hi,
First of all, did you try the wireless connection with your first original rom?
And what do you mean by "never get a good connection", could you explain that point? does the prophet connect and disconnect?
You must know that wifi performance are kinda poor on this device from what I heard and what I saw... you'll never get something like your laptop for example.
But I'll do some test at home and see how it's going now that I can really connect (I never could before, so I never really tried :wink
Anyway, in my case it was clearly hardware as I have the problem on my Orange rom, then I had the same problem with the Dopod one.
Now I just received a new prophet, and it worked fine on the first try with the Orange rom...
I'd like to try with the Dopod again but until they find a way to downgrade, i won't take the irsk... or maybe yes, i dunno
First of all: Thank you for answering so quick !!!
Yes i can connect, and i can also Use Opera, Internet Explorer and so on...
But i think it is really slow, i never got the connection far away from "poor" ...
Even the original o2 Xda neo rom was not better...
I will have to try some different Roms when downgrading will be made possible i think.
you said your o2 rom wasn't better? is that right?
it is slow for me too (right now i'm on my prophet over wifi)... but i don't think the rom would make a big difference, i mean, the dopod us supposed to be the fastest...
I think the device itself have a poor wifi...
could you confirm that your o2 rom was as poor as the dopod or did i get it wrong?
maybe you could also test your connection speed too.
If you tell me how i can test the Connection, i can do for sure !
I did not "really" test the o2-rom, i started the XDA and after Windows was ready, i saw it is quite slow in the menue - wireless was detected and i connected but signal quality was exactly the same bad thing i have now.
Edit: TXRATE is "Auto", after 2 Minutes or so it drops to 2Mbps
408 Kb/s is what I get when I run a basic speed test.
that ain't bad... and I t ink pocket IE is quite slow too...
We are not on a PC after all, the proc speed also affect the connection speed.
I think that it's already nice to have wifi on a little device like this
I`ll do a DSL-Speedtest, i think this is what you did, too ?
EDIT:
Downloading is very fast can you give me a clue wehre i can exactly see the speed?
exactly
Mhm, after a new Hardreset a interruped the *.cab file installs with the first reboot - The System is much faster now. The Wireless Quality is not better but i can Download and Phone via Skype without any Problems and interruptions.I Think my System had an overload, now it is fast and it works.
I will test the wireless range tomorrow...

GPRS Stops Working

Traded up(?) to the Niki from a Tornado, I use push email from the works exchange server, over Vodafone contract GPRS, the Tornado was always great for this.
Setup the Niki with the same GPRS settings, when I turn it on everything works, push email, internet browsing etc. After a while it stops working, can't sync, can't browse the web, or even get a weather update. Though it still says it's got a good GPRS connection.
Switch off and back on and it all works again for a short while, then same again.
I've even flashed wioth Tom's ROM to see if that improved things, still the same.
Stoping and starting the GPRS connection doesn't help.
Proxy, DNS, other issue ?
Any ideas ?
I have the same problem. The only way to restore it in my experience is by activating 3G in the comms manager (or restarting). From there the phone will log off from the data connection and log back on again. From the searching I've done it seems to be a problem related to WM6. I also use push mail and, when this happens, it's very annoying. Haven't found a solution yet. I've tried an alternate DNS address (still nothing), I've tried upgrading the radio to a Kaiser ROM (same problem), and I've tried using Toms ROM (still the same problem). I was hoping that upgrading the radio ROM would solve it, but it hasn't. I'm going to try and have the phone on 3G all day and see if it drops out of connection. If it doesn't then that would indicate some problem with the GPRS side of WM. I don't think it's a setting thing, but I could be wrong. I wish I could find a solution though because I'm considering moving to an N95 8Gb...
I have the same issue,
see my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374226
but with no reply...
When it occurs I can switch off the phone part (plane mode), but I can't switch back on, it stucks to plane mode... I've to shutdown the device to be able to restart a good data connection.
Maybe a WM6 bug... or radio rom issue .. I dunno
Thanks both,
I've changed the radio rom to this one, RUU Nike Radio 1.64.08.21K , which is a hacked Kaiser one, seems a bit better, still a low signal, but quicker reconection, and the GPRS stays up longer.
Vodafone UK
Tom's Rom
RUU Nike Radio 1.64.08.21K
Cheers.
GPRS connectivity issue
Same issue here. Push mail, GPRS, internet stops working after a while. Sometimes it works for a day or less. I place it into plane mode and then turn off plane mode. and it usually works. Sometimes i have to reboot the whole thing, but not very often.
The display still shows G in the top box, but doesn't work.
Anyone have any fixes, or suggestions...
OMG, didn't know that this is a common problem.
Waiting for the SE XPERIA X1.

Wifi isn't working after upgrade to WM6

Hi.. please forgive me, but I've been searching this forum for a couple hours, and tried everything I have read.. but my Wifi still doesn't work.
I have a Cingular 8125. It was running the factory WM5 yesterday, and my Wifi worked fine. (wifi is the main reason I got this phone).
I upgraded my ROM to the latest Hornet (wow, it is FAST - thanks!) and everything works great but the wifi.
IPL: 2.21
SPL: 2.21
GSM: 2.13.11
OS: 11.0.4.0
I tried the Hard Reset method and the other tricks I found on here... i'm starting to think I might need to upgrade my IPL/SPL too? If I go back to WM5, will my wifi work again?
Thanks for any hints you can provide.
Always making things
Make it men! maybe it works for you but I can tell you that IPL and SPL dont change the WIFI performance maybe your wifi radio is dead...
if you want to upgrade your ipl and spl try the Aku 3.08 for wizard and download that rom search exactly with that words on thi web... but remember its only for G3 (G4has too much issues and bricked problems)
post your results... and remember unlock upgrade and downgrade are recomended in XP, flash with your batt full charged and please downgrade to an original first before upgrade a coock ROM.

I don't want to try upgrading the IPL/SPL.... if I can't get my Wifi to connect under WM6, then I will go back to WM5.
My wifi radio isn't dead - it connects to my home wireless router and gets an IP address... but I can't call up any web pages using Explorer or Opera. However, web pages come up fine using EDGE/GPRS (I have AT&T). It's almost like the WM6 isn't configured right, to let Explorer know that it can use the Wifi (when wifi is connected).
thanks
Does you have the conection set?
Maybe on conections you have set all the ports edge gprs and others to let the IE in from that ports... maybe you can conect via wifi changing the advanced conections setting to not use proxy server or change from the first option from My ISP to My work network... i did it once and it works!

OK, I have a little bit more information.
The Wifi connection *IS* connecting me to the Internet, for about 15 seconds after it starts up. Using PING, I can ping the IP address of my Wizard for about 15 seconds, before the replies cease. I can also start up the Wizards Internet Explorer and call up a web page or two, before it stops working.
So, I can turn off Wifi, and turn it back on, and surf the internet for about 10-15 seconds at a time.
Does anyone know of a registry setting or something that is controlling this? Why doesn't my Wifi connection stay "active"?
Again, this issue is occuring with the latest "Hornet 5" ROM which I downloaded on Friday.
Thanks

Well.... today I went to a sports bar to watch the NFL. I turned on my wifi, and guess what? It worked perfectly. I stayed in touch with my friends via instant messaging for the entire game, no problems.
So... My wifi still doesn't work from home (it was working fine last Friday), but since I really don't "need" it to work from home, I guess I can live with things the way they are. I will spend a little more time troubleshooting my home network, but for now let's just say this is "case closed".
Thanks!

OK, one more entry, just to perhaps help anyone else who might be having this problem.
Still perplexed about why my Wizard's Wifi would not connect to my home network, I went out to my back porch and scanned for other networks in my neighborhood. My Wizard found 3 or 4. After 10 minutes of this, I came back inside and tried to connect to my own home network again.... IT WORKED!
I suspect that there is some flag or registry setting that is set by WM6 and/or ActiveSync during the re-flash process.... WM6 must initially set this flag to something like "this network can only connect via ActiveSync". After I scanned a bunch of wifi networks, at some point this flag got reset and WM6 let me connect to my home network via wifi.

Wifi Issues

Hi, I recently got my Topaz a couple of days ago, I have always had winmo devices from the start and am loving the Topaz, I instantly upgraded it to a 6.5 Rom from this site.
I am having issues with my Wifi not working properly, it connects but the internet traffic doesnt go anywhere, i have tried a tracert from the device and it doesn't get past my internet router.
Other devices on my wireless network are fine and my old winmo device worked fine.
GPRS connects fine and resolves pages and email etc.
Anyone have any ideas ? Its driving me crazy !
Thanks
Hi,
it's quite difficult to help you without knowing your ROM and radio versions, anyway I solved a similar problem by setting to "Maximum Performance" the slider in Wifi's Power Management tab. I suggest to try different radios, in my experience the latest two absolutely require this setting to work properly
Thanks man, that setting worked a treat !

What are your symptomes? Do you at least have a "connected" icon but cannot surf the web or upload weather forecast? Did you try other internet accesses (other modems,routers..)? I know it's ridiculous that a stock device beahves like that..maybe you should consider to try an upgraded radio.

Thanks for your reply.
The TD2 tries to connect but continually fails. I have the same settings on my MDA Touch (HTC ELF) which has flawless WIFI performance. How do I upgrade the radio (which might improve my TD2 in other good ways)? I didn't think the radio would have any influence over the 802.11 network adaptor.
Tony
Ps. After finishing typing this I checked WIFI and managed to connect for a nearly a minute...
Try to change a rom (And radiorom too). I noticed that Tom Condom's ROM have some problems with Wi-Fi (On my device), Rx on it is 54mb, Tx is laggy 1mb.
Wi-fi on Shadowline's rom works pretty good - rx and tx both are 54mb.
P.S. My radio is 3.44.25.27
