Hello xda world. Like the forums... I'm new to PPC, but I've previously developed Palm apps.
I've had an x7500 for a week or so. Lots of messing around trying to get a configuration I like, and somehow I've managed to break it (maybe).
The backlight works fine - when there is no external power.
However, when external power is applied, the backlight goes to its lowest mode and will not honour the slider settings in the Backlight app.
This is really, really annoying. Any suggestions?
Is it a PPC or an HTC thing?
Thanks & regards

i remember i had similar problem before, do you have Phone Alarm install?
Thanks for your help, but... nope no phone alarm.
(In the phone app right? I don't see any options for a phone alarm.)
hi Devany
not sure if you managed to find a resolution but i too had a similar problem.
i think mine was caused by phonemanager (which i have since uninstalled)
i found that when on battery power the slider in backlight settings did absolutely nothing. the only time the backlight would become brighter was when the alarm was going off.
searching throught the registry i found the solution.
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\controlpanel\backlight
change the onoffbat key to 1 (mine was set to 0)
once done press the power key down for ages to reboot.
my slider now works fine.
hope this helps

I have a bug in my Exec:
whenever I start using my Exec, my backlight setting (within Settings/system/backlight/"turn off backlight if device is not used for...") REVERTS back to 10 seconds,
although I keep on changing the setting to either 30 seconds or a minute.
- I think i read before that someone else had encountered this bug in the past.
--Does anyone else have this?
--Does anyone know of a solution to fix this problem?
i'll appreciate any help ! ...this bug is really bugging me
nobody has any input :?: :?:
Are you running PocketZenPhone, or any other brand of profiling software? They might interfere with the behaviour of this setting.
mine acts normaly !!
SiliconeS:
No - I am not using PocketZenPhone.
Although I am still (not for long though!) using the o2 Active [i.e., the o2 Personal setting] which MIGHT have some profiling s/w - I am not too sure....
I am about to disable it within the next few days in any case - I hope that would solve the issue.
 Please write if you have any other insight considering the info I just provided.
First, a question: the maximum backlight time is usually 10 sec (in the Jasjar, at least). Did you change it using a registry tweak ?
I believe it is the keyboard backlighting that has the 10 second maximum. It seems the screen backlighting maximum for battery is 5 minutes through the settings.
I haven't had this problem at all by the way.
Tekflow:
I have the O2 xda Exec - so I am not too sure as to the settings in JasJar - as I haven't tried the i-Mate Rom yet;
I think Shivafool is right - I strongly doubt that the JasJar has a 10 second backlight limit - and the keyboard light is quite limited in time ...
In the Exec at least you can change it by going to: Settings/system/backlight/"turn off backlight if device is not used for..." (as mentioned above...) I am sure it is located in a similar place on the JasJar.
As to my own problem - I used SiliconS advise and looked for any profiling s/w within the Exec. I strongly suspect that indeed it was the O2 Active s/w, which has some profile settings, and which constantly over-rode the regular setting.
I am not entirely sure yet, but after I will change the o2 personal settings to Corporate (which would also disable the o2 Active s/w) - within a few days - I will know for sure.
I will post here if the problem will not be solved by that.
Thanx for all the help everyone !
Oooops, sorry, I thought you were talking about the keyboard backlight.
On a slightly different topic, my Backlight button on the front between the two speakers doesn't appear to work.

It probably does work, but the problem is that it is an almost useless button. If you have your timers configured such that the backlight times out and goes off before the device times out and turns off, then during the time that the backlight is off and the device is still on you can press the backlight button to turn the backlight back on. AFAIK that's the only function for that button.

Hi,
Sometimes my backlight does not switch on when I've pushed the on/off button for 1 sec to go out of the stand-by mode. I can see that the telephone is working but only without backlight. I don't know where I can find the settings. I'm using the Vario from T-Mobile.
Can somebady help me with this?
thank you in advance.

maybe hard reset or rom update? , cant imagin what will do that unless somthing is hogging all cpu power perhaps
A reset will help but I'm not happy to update my ROM. I'm afraid for more problems.

Spb GPRS Monitor does this problem on my 9100 too, any software with SPB in the name seems quite buggy.. ;-)
OK,
right now I don't have the problem anymore but I'll will monitor it and maybe then I will uninstall the gprs monitor.
Thanks!!

MDA Backlight issue
I ran across a problem with the MDA, where I adjusted the Backlight settings. From there on the Backlight woulf not turn on unless I went to the setting control to adjust it. The fix: Go to backlight settings, set your brightness desired (maybe in the middle). Go to Battery power from the tabs that are currently listed. Make sure you have (Turn on Backlight when a button is pressed or the screen is tapped) Selected. Then press ok.
That should fix it if the issue you are experiencing is similar to mine.
I have the same problem with my artemis. And i think is from spb plus since the backlight control button from today dont even work on this new version. Or from phone profiles. Everytime i make a soft reset i have to reajust the backlight or when it turns off i have to make another soft for reajusting before it goes out. It's quite boring and i'm trying to find an app to replace spb with the close button and task button ant the today buttons shortcuts if is that the problem. And my artemis rom dont know why dont have the option on the backlight settings to turn on when screen tapped or key pressed.
For some reason my device has suddenly started switching to the minimum backlight setting whenever it's switched on. If I go to the backlight settings and then adjust the slider it will stay at the selected brightness until it switches off. When it switches back on again it's at minimum brightness and I can hardly see the screen!
This started happening after I installed and then removed PocketZenPhone.
I don't really want to hard-reset the device unless I absolutely have to - does anyone know what registry key sets the default switch-on brightness?
Thanks,
I dont have the solution but I have had the same problem intermittently. Can be really aggravating in the dark because it can be hard to get to the proper screen to increase the backlight. Hasnt happened in a while. Have not been able to figure out what triggers it. Have not installed PocketZenPHone. Curious if anyone has an explanation.
yah, i've noticed this to, sometimes i'll hit the power button to take it off standby and the backlight would be off. first couple of times it scared the hell out of me cuz i thought the screen had broke or burnt out.
also i noticed the version of spb pocket plus i'm using (3.04 build 4195) doesnt adjust the backlight brightness.
Now that you mention it. the SPB Pocket plus backlight does not work for me either. Strange...
Well I think I've managed to "fix" this by setting the following;
Backlight Settings:
On battery power, turn off backlight if device is not used for [5 min]
Turn on backlight when a button is pressed or the screen is tapped
Power Settings
On battery power: Turn off device if not used for [3 minutes]
I think the key thing here is to have the device auto-switch-off BEFORE the backlight timer kicks in. Since setting the above three settings I have not had the same problem again.
Ill give it a try as well.
Hmm...maybe someone can help me. One day, my backlight timer settings when the PDA's not plugged in reset to 10 seconds (in the registry it has it as 7 seconds). I'll go in and change it to 2 minutes (the original setting I had it at), but the minute I turn it off, it resets back again to the 10 seconds setting. I even tried going into the registry and changing it, and it resets it back to 10 seconds. I suspect it may have something to do with an entry in the "scheduled tasks" but it looks like a complete mess. Is there some kind of scheduled tasks cleanup utility?
Thanks,
Q
hello i have the same problem using phothet with WM6
Thanks
Nicolas
I had the same problem often about 15 months ago - it happened often each day.
I posted herw but had no joy with a solution - but then found one on Modoco (i was looking about March/April 2006).
Even with that - it has still done if perhaps five or six times since - and basically makes the phone unusuable if it happens somewhere or time with poor light.
My KJam backlight keeps changing by itself to dark
Suddenly my KJam backlight always turns to low without me doing so, then I have to change it to high, barely can see what I’m doing as it is almost black. This is kept happening especially after I installed Pocketweather. I reinstalled the Rom, it worked fine then suddenly it is back again when I switch the screen off, or automatically it is switched off, the backlight slider I find it at the lowest end.
Why thus is happening, it’s driving me crazy, please help me
Perhaps someone has an explanation why my backlight doesnt light up again when a button is pressed?
From time to time, the backlight goes dark and even though I am pressing buttons, screen, power button, etc, the backlight doesnt come back on. I have to search for the backlight adjuster (in the dark) in order to switch the light back on.
I have wisbar advanced and SpbPocketPlus installed - might that effect this somehow??
Thanks for any advice!
i have exactly the same problem and don´t know a solution. ;-(
Wisbar Advance 2.6.0.1 is installed, SpbPocketPlus not.
I think it comes more often if i use the camera, but it is not reproduceable...
I've never had this problem before, I dont have wisbar installed.
You may be doing a press and hold function on your device. Quick press of the power turns it off, a long press turns off the backlight. the only way to turn it back on is to long press the power button.
also you have settings that turns the back light screen off, which may be affecting this.
This problem used to occur on the O2 XDA2i ALL THE TIME!
Just my 2 cents. Sorry, not very helpful, but defo a problem we've seen before. You hvae to go into settings to start the backlight back up.

It hasnt happened lately (actually ever I posted this thread strangely enough) but its quite embarrassing when you have to find your way through a dark screen.
I put a large symbol of the brightness adjuster in one corner (using SpbPocketPlus), so I only have to find that symbol rather then start --> settings --> etc..... its not a cure but it makes it easier switching it back on.
If anyone has a remedy for this problem, please share...
Not sure why this happens, but I fixed it using...

This app - run on your prophet, and all is back to normal. Keep a copy on your SD card...

didn't help
I tried and still use the neo backlight fix. But this fix is only for forcing via startup a longer measured time for the light to stay on.
I too have suffered with the problem of the backlight not coming on every now and again after starting up the prophet. I've had this problem on numerous roms too which is interesting. What more interesting is that even in the days of my owning a Blue Angel (Orange M2000, MDA) I STILL remember having this intermittent problem with the light not always coming on. Only way I fixed it was to simply soft reset the device. Whenever I did that and when I do it now, it stops it happening for week or so at least.
I still use the neo back light fix too as my phone has the quick light turn off problem without it. Neo certainly created a good fix no mistaking.
All the best
Nicholas
i had the same problem...just put the same value to the standby and backlight ...( both 3 mins on mine)...and never happened again....i think it helps...
I have a strange backlight & power-off problem on my Qtek S200:
When the backlight is switched on and I press the Power button shortly to switch it to sleep mode, the screen gets blank but the backlight does not go off.
So now I wait first when the backlight timer goes off before switching the device to sleep mode manually.
Another problem:
When the power settings is set to switch the device off automatically, it reboots when the timer goes off. So my solution is to disable the auto power-off feature.
How to fix this to the original behaviour ?
I tried the neo_backlight_fix and set the backlight timeout to the same value as the standby timeout, but with no avail.
My Qtek S200 has still the original old ROM (G4 model) and Windows Mobile 5.0:
ROM version info:
IPL: 2.10.001
SPL: 2.10.001
GSM: 02.07.20
OS: 2.10.7.25
Please help me to solve the problem.
Maybe I messed up a lot and the only solution is to install a newer ROM which is available since some time at qtek.nl.
Thanks in advance.

Happens to me after a soft reset, then sleep. The wakeup has the backlight switched off.
My work around is to go into backlight settings immediately after a soft reset, change to a different level, then change back to the required one. After that it will wake up with the correct setting. Bit of a faff I know but thats M$ for you!

Here is one solution:
http://www.iaccarino.de/silvio/ppcstuff.htm
Scroll down to the backlight timeout fix.
Or use a registry editor and set the value
LockLevel
beyond the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel
back to zero.
Or if you use phoneAlarm you may also use the newest version of my NetManager
http://www.pocketmax.net/smf/index.php?topic=2650.0
the timeout bugfix is included in this release.

Silvio

This bug just started happening to me and I KNEW it was related to the phone lock (because it didn't start until I was playing around with the lock settings) but couldn't figure out how to fix it.
Whew... that was driving me absolutely nuts.

HTC Cruise backlight
Hey
i had the same problem (i guess) in addition to that the level of backlight used to decrease to the basic level after hanging up a call. However when i re-adjusted it, the level indicator is exactly where i left it! and once i touch it (not move it) it "remembers" the current level! but still darkens after hanging up calls or coming up from a sleep period.
the solution was :
after a soft reset, adjust the level you want then immediately lock your device and let it turn off the screen by itself. when it wakes up everything will be stable.
