Recurring Storage Card Corruption - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Corrupt files and folders are starting to appear on my Vario II storage card (sandisk 2Gb) and I cannot establish why. As you can see from the view of the card below it contains many illegal characaters so neither the files nor folders can be deleted. Whilst I can understand any crashes of the device may cause stray files they do not normaly comprise corrupt names and as you can see from the file dates it all looks rather nasty.
Last time I just copied all the good folders (using a micro SD card to USB stick converter) to my laptop then formatted and started again with a freshly formatted (Windows FAT32)and checked (Windows scandisk) the card - copying all files back afterwards.
This solved the problem but as you can see the issue has occured again and I notice that some files and folders have disappeared (I tried Google and this forum but the posts seem to concentrate on fixing the problem - I can do that). What I need to know is how to avoid this again - can anybody offer any help? Is it a virus perhaps? I am concerned that my files are at risk and even resolving this immediate problem will not address the cause.

Stop using sandisk - get a kingston card. all my problems disappeared ...

I used to have the same problem on my Xda IIi, so maybe it is a card problem more than the phone? Sandisk too...

Use kingstone!
I originally had sandisk 512mg and had problems of lock ups and corrupted files. Soft reset would fix it but not for long. However, since I got a new Kngstone 1gb card, all problems were gone. After that I needed more storage and couldn't find Kinstone 2gb card where I leave, so bought sandisk ultraII 2gb card 3 days ago hoping it would be different. Nope! The problems are coming back again. I am going back to Kingstone.

Hi Tony,
Notwithstanding that there are apparently known issues with certain SanDisk cards, do you remove the mSD card while the device is still powered on? I have noticed disk corruption such as lost clusters and truncated files on my Kingston mSD card when I have done this. Seems better to power down the device and wait the ~10 secs for the caches to be flushed before removing it.

John,
I have removed the card from time to time but this appears not to be the cause in this case. I have now even started removing software in the hope of resolving the issue but so far this has not helped. I have found the problems occur every few days and if left gets worse - the screen shot below shows how it starts - this happened today. I have not removed my card for days now but it has once again happened - BUT take a look at the screen shot of my device in Resco Explorer. Note that there are corrupt files in the route, that folders have gone (trust me) and also that a folder previously named "GB_plus_major_roads_of_WE" is now called "GB_PLU~1". Most of the folder names are now also in upper case where by default they are not normally.
This is very frustrating and although I can revert to the full folder structure copy on my laptop it's a pain to restore so often.
Each time I restore the data to the card (2Gb Sandisk) I remove the card and put into a USB adaptor that allows the card to be used as USB stick, format the card (in Windows XP - tried FAT and FAT 32), then run check disk on the card - which never finds any errors even on the card with corrupted files and folder names! ARGHHH - what can I try next?
I have found plenty of references to this kind of fault but nobody appears to have previously posted screen shots or referred to this detail - it's almost as though there is some form of MS DOS (8.3) folder name change going on for at least one of the folders. Any help would be most welcome - it's almost time for a hard reset to try to isolate the problem - I suspect software is the cause because of the MS DOS type folder name change...

It's possible that bad software is doing this, but I'd be surprised. This looks more like "low level" (i.e. SD Card controller) corruption. Have you tried a different card (even from the same manufacturer)? It's possible that there is a hardware fault with the card that you have (does happen, especially as they become cheaper and cheaper).

For a while now I have thought this is a hardware issue that then leads into software issues. IMHO it's possible that the card (particularly Sandisk) is making poor contact with the contacts in the device. This poor contact, possible it's intermittent, then messes up the tasks the software is performing. My reason for saying this is some of the common factors reported:
1. The card works fine in a card reader on PC (yes the corrupted files show up but scans reveal no problems
2. The cards have not been reported to become corrupt when being used in a card reader
3. There are likely to be miniscule differences in the physical dimensions/contact surfaces between different manufacturers. Hence Sandisk shows more issues. However use caution with this assumption - there are probably far more Sandisks around than other makes - hence statistically there will be more problems with them.
4. The problem appears to be random - not associated with any particular programme or use of inbuilt software package.
5. There are reported cases where folks say if they insert the card at a certain angle or pushing up or down a little when inserting the card will work better. This is a fairly definitive indicator of contact problems.
6. Some have reported sticking a layer of paper on the non-contact side of the SD card makes it work better. Again this suggests a problem with contacts. Perhaps Sandisks are a little thin than other brands?
7. To make a very crude point - the card slot and internal contacts are very delicate. We have all had a torch with poor battery contacts that when shaken the light comes and goes (or brightens and dims). Imagine the same situation if this happens to your SD card while data is written or FAT tables read.
8. All makes of card can suffer corruption if card is removed while data is being written or card is removed before data is written back.
There is a backup FAT table that can sometimes mean that if you spot corruption on the disk and perform an immediate soft reset the data may return in un-corrupted form as the device uses the backup table. However if you continue to try opening and closing files in the corrupt state or if any information is automatically written to the card then the corrupted version of the FAT table becomes the backup and the corruption is non reversible. This is a matter of pot luck when you spot the corruption, it may already be too late.
May I just say that I have never suffered this problem and I use a Sandisk 2gig.

I had same problem with my hx4700 after I upgraded it to wm5. but that was 2 years I ago. have you tried defragmenting your card? just a suggestion

Mike,
Thanks for the excellent summary of factors - it sounds like the contacts may be to blame as I have rarely removed the card when the device is powered - and then when I have it appears not to have caused any problems. I wonder if I am not able to retify the problem because I use applications installed to the card and they access the card so removing the FAT backup and the possibility of making good with a soft-reset. I'll try the paper trick - I've already tried gently cleaning the contacts on the card with a soft clean cloth. I'll report back.... This card has now been in use for over 6 mths and only just stated to cause problems.

I have a Sandisk 2Gb that never corrupted but I have a Sandisk 2Gb Ultra 2 that has been corrupting with my old WM5 builds
I did not tried it with WM6 as I am working with this unit...

Card now appears to have failed
The card now seems to have failed altogther as neither the USB card reader (USB Stick like) nor the device can even see the card when inserted! Suspect card failure as the USB Stick-type device is recohnised in Windows empty and inserting the MicroSD card just makes the light on the stick come and stay on.
I wonder what can fail in these cards? There is no damage and no obvious sign of any external problem

Aha, as I suspected. Lucky guess more like it!
SD cards contain flash memory (obviously) and also a controller (basically a mini-processor) to do things like wear leveling (not writing too many times in the same spot, since flash memory is only good for so many write cycles) and automatic defragmentation. Considering its size, it is quite a complex piece of electronics. Like many pieces of complex electronics, it is also suspectible to damage through bad handling, e.g. static discharge across the contacts. However, newer devices are definitely better made (at least, the more expensive ones), are more resilient and last longer. I guess the old adage, "You get what you pay for" comes to mind.
This posting is not at all meant to undermine Mike Channon's comments (whom everyone here acknowledges is the XDA Hermes hardware expert), in fact, Mike comments were quite valid and now that I think of it, probably the cause of my corruption experiences. It's probably wise to buy a card, insert it (carefully) and just leave it there. Probably will last longer.

Sd Card No Sandisk But On Kingstone
I had a SANDISK CARD and I HAD ever problem of detect and crash of smartphone. Now, I have buy a new KINGSTONE card and all my problem are finisched.
by and say see you at SANDISK

New Card ordered
I've just placed an order for a new 2Gb Kingston card so will see how this gets on. Thanks for all the advice. I am now trying to pursue a claim against the warranty - bought it via "flashman" on Ebay so this might be interesting (to claim against an ebay seller). I am sure I will be referred to Sandisk and I have already sent them an e-mail seeking advice.

Tony, try to use a 2mm thin tape , 5 cm long and tape it over the card right next to the notch, overlapping the notch slightly. This fixed my UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER 2G byte card and made my TYTN fly comparing to the state it was before. I used to SR 10 times a day, loose my card at least 5 times a day and not be able to turn my TYTN on twice a day. This all gone and my TYTN today is steady as a rock with WM5, 2.11 and many programs installed including SPB Plus, Diary, Time, Weather, Imageer, Backup, Emoze and others.

The card is now dead altogether and will not even read in the USB stick convertor, which it had done quite OK before. Are you suggesting I appliy this mod to the card and then try using in in the card reader?

I doubt he is. That trick is for a card that is making a poor contact - normally in the phone only. If your card does not read or format in a PC card reader then sadly I think "it's up the Swaney"

SD card disappeared *POOF*

Hi all,
Had my XDAIIi for a month or so now... beside the odd lockup it's been more or less trouble-free.
However, I put the phone in the cradle today and got a strange message from WMP about sync settings... upon further investigation I found that my storage card is no longer recognised by my phone. It a Viking 512mb card.
I can't see it on File Explorer or via exploring on Active Sync. It's as if no card is plugged in... I tried another old 8mb card that I had and it works fine.
What should I do. Try to return the card, or is there a way I can reformat it? Any advice would be helpful...
Hi
I got the same problem, this is the second SD, I got the same weird msg.
Did you find a way to fix it?
The SD is not recognize neither in digitals cameras (tried only one) or other pocket pcs (other XDAlli and an HP).
I've heard form some friend that lot of people are getting this problem...
maybe vikings are troublesome..

Yep my new XDAlli killed a dane-lec 512mb card after a couple of weeks.. Couldn't use it in anything. Got another 512mb card this time branded as PRT?? card has been OK for the last 4 weeks but I do get the "storage card detected - search for audio & video files" message every now and then.. I also find the XDA can't see the card sometimes but a quick removal & replacement fixes the issue. I have also notice xbackup now takes around 10 mins..It was taking over an hour with the dane-lec...
I'm sure there is a compatibility issue with somecards..
AMAZING
I just read this post out of interest, casually browsing through the forum waiting for 5 o'clock , went to my XDA 2 and guess what.... no storage card!!!
Forunately, a soft reset was all it needed but how spooky
odd my xda2 like all others take a few sec's to reinit the sd card when it wakes up
and if it's needing some batt it dont
i've used sandisk slow version 128MB
and now kingston ultra something something 512MB
never had any issues apart from the sandisk being superslow
So once it's toast, is it really toast or can I somehow reformat it?
I guess I'll try to return it...
Can anyone recommend a card that hasn't reported any issues?
I am having the same problem... I am using PNY cards and am now on my fourth card. I am going to try a new branded card when i get the chance. People seem satisfied with ScanDisk cards so am going to try them.
MMCdata not seen
My XDA II recognize my MMC but file explorer does not show all of the data. Even my card reader does not show the data in MMC. But memory shows that Card is in use and all of the data is there as shown by the memory used... Please help!

SD card unreadable

The data from my SD card became partly unreadable, some prgms could not be started and when looking at the root folder of my card I found some items named like ç!é”è((é§éç. Putting the card out and back in didn’t help, only a soft reset did the job. All data was still intact. This thing happened twice untill now. I use a Sandisk 1GB card.
Has anyone had this problem before? I remember reading about the same problem on a forum but couldn't find the posting.
I also experienced the same problem
I had this problem before. When I pulled my Sandisk 1 GB Micro SD and pushed it back in, the System did not recognize my Memory Card. I did it several times and suddenly it came back again.
The trick I used was pushing the Memory upward (against the back of the phone) until the memory was not completely inserted. Roughly about 1/10 of the memory sticks out of the memory slot
I believe this is a major hardware problem with the Memory Slot.
I have had this problem with my 2GB miniSD on my MDA Compact- the first time i had no choice but to re-format the card and start over but second time, re-inserting the card solved the problem.
May be something to do with the card not getting proper contact.
It doesn't work at all anymore!
I've had the same problem with my 1gb SD card since I bought it 2 years ago. It's crap, because copying a movie for instance through the phone (MDA compact) takes forever.
Now I reformatted it, and copied some stuff to it through my card reader. But after putting it back into my phone, the card now is not even seen at all by my phone, and putting it back in my PC doesn't work either... now it's not recognised anywhere anymore...
Anyone, now how to get this fixed?!
Thx!

Try using this utility (or similar) to format your card from a card reader:
http://www.sdcard.org/Downloads.aspx I've used it many times on various cards and seems to do the trick.

Hmmm, thx for hint, but that didn't work either. Since the drive isn't recognised, so does this tool... weird enough the adminstrative tools in windows (drive managament) does see a 1gb drive, but assigning a new drive letter causes an error.... damn... looks like I'll be buying a new SD card.
Does anyone know which brands/types (I now have a 1gb Kinston) have less problems with this, so I can copy files to and from my card though my card reader instead of my phone, without srewing my card up?
Edit: Ha! I formatted my SD card with my digital camera! Leaving just the problem of not being able to copy files to my card through my cardreader...

As far as I can tell getting the data back is not an option. The best you can hope for is to wipe it and start again. Luckily this phone has a ton of internal memory so the only things i have on my card are TomTom maps and music which are easy to copy back over.
I've been using my laptops card reader to format it cause my desktop and usb reader wouldn't read it. But I just tried http://www.cnetx.com/format/ and that works too if you can't find a PC with a card reader that can read it.
I'll probably get a replacement if I keep having this problem cause I've already tired 3 different SD cards and it keeps happening: 512mb, 1gb, 4gb. All different brands Kingston, Sandisk, and Transcend.
I'm trying my Sandisk 2gb card now.
Not permanantly lost
Corruption appears to be random... and not permanent...
I've been having some troubles with my phone as well... When I look at the SD card via File Explorer, Resco Explorer, or through ActiveSync, most of the files and folders will be missing - replaced with random numbers...
If I remove the card and put it back in, everything returns.
It has scared me numerous times when I thought I lost all of my files, but it's not permanent (in my case).

I just shipped my phone off to http://www.bodyguardz.com/ to get fitted for a case, but as soon as it's back I'll give that a try. I tried resetting the phone, but I never tried taking it out and putting it back in.
One morning I found all the filenames on storage card scrambled, but after restart they all came back... nothing lost. Only happenned once in a month.
Lost files... Or so I thought....
Well, it finally happened to me... I lost the files on my SD card - previously, all I had to do was eject the card and re-insert, and my files would show up... But not last night.
So, I decided to figure out what had happened... Since data recovery is just one of the things we handle at work, I fired up some applications to figure out where my data went. I assumed that the data was still there, but just no longer visible - similar to when, with Windows 98, if you powered off improperly, your drive would think you had less data than you did, and a scandisk fixed it...
Ran the utils, and all 350MB of files I had thought were gone were sitting right there - the recovery apps said they were right there - I should see them. Until I looked at the PATH... Turns out that something is going wrong with the path structure, the files that were missing were in the "." path... Confused?
Let's say the root of my SD is the "I:" drive... So
I:\Blah.file is where my files were...
But now, they were here:
I:\.\Blah.file
Still there, just in "." - and of course, you can't access that! So I simply had it move the data back to the root, and viola - all my files, no corruption, no lost data.
I decided to do a chkdsk on the card, to see if anything had gone wrong other than the data (it was 5AM and I didn't want to do a full byte scan with the recovery apps). XP's chkdsk reported that the path structure was invalid, and even noted that "." and ".." were wrong, so it corrected them! WARNING - DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE DATA, XP/VISTA CHKDSK WILL NOT RESTORE YOUR FILES THIS WAY, IT WILL ONLY CORRECT THE BAD PATH, BUT YOUR FILES WILL NOT COME BACK. And, funny thing, it said I had CROSSLINKED FILES! Now that's weird - and the only time that really happens is when write processes are interrupted...
Anyway, for people that have important files that they think they have lost, they can probably be easily recovered... Just do NOT use standard operating system tools to fix it, since they probably won't...

I received my Spring Touch on 11/5 and loaded a bunch of pics and a couple of video clips onto my SD card. A day or two later I went to show someone the pics in the Camera Album app, but it was empty. I looked at my card and everything was gone.
I think that was with the 512MB card that came with the device, but I can't remember for sure since I soon went out and purchased a 2GB card. Regardless, I have had no troubles since then (almost one whole month), but I'm careful to have a backup of any file that I store there on my PC as well.

htc vogue corrupting memory card
The memory card in my touch has corrupted 2x already in the time I have had it. The first time, I only had about 200 MB of files on the card, but it was showing out of memory--none available.
Reformatted the card, was good for a week, now my entire My Documents folder has disappeared, but the available space on the card would indicate that the contents of the My Documents is still taking up storage space.
How do we report this to HTC?
I am using the 512MB card that came with the phone as my wife is withholding my 4 GB Card as a Christmas present.
Happened to me again (second time in a month) this morning.
picture attached.
Didn't lose any files. Directory is just scrambled.
Restart and it all comes back.

add me to the list... in my case, it could be due to me removing the card while the device was in sleep mode. SD card corruption has happened at least once on every WM device i've owned so i always create frequent backups of "important" stuff. fortunately, i recovered from today's corruption (in 5 mins) using a day old backup.

ppcgeeks.com found a minor solution to this, and that is to prevent the device from fully going to sleep by using s2u2 to turn the screen off but leave the device on, it prevents 3 problems people have been having 1, it prevents the corruption issue with microsd cards, and it prevents the device from not waking up from sleep and as well as prevents people from missing calls because of that
Howto Recover Lost Data on Sprint Touch Card
I had my second run-in with corrupted storage card on my vogue.
Mostly I wanted to save the pictures and was able to do so using this free program http://www.download.com/PC-Inspector-Smart-Recovery/3000-2242_4-10261986.html?tag=lst-1
PC Inspector.
It took hours for it to inspect the files, but it found all of my photos. It doesn't however look like it can find and restore anything other than files in image formats.

I encountered the same problem. I usually just need to restart the Touch. But today, reboot doesn't work any more. This is really frustrating.
pissed at my vogue
I'm not sure if i'm happy to read that i'm not the only one having problems with the Vogue After a week of ownership, I experienced my first data corruption on the standard 512 card. However, the only main problem was the 100MEDIA folder in DCIM was gone (along with all my photos). I believe I had the camera album open when the device went to sleep. I just cleaned the bad clusters and made a new folder.
Every week random programs stored on my card won't run and File explorer shows the files aren't on the card anymore. After a soft reset, they're back.
When I take the card out and replace, it becomes "Storage Card 2." Opening this folder shows only Outlook email attachments. I can also open the "Storage Card" folder but missing files are still gone.
I also miss about 3 calls a week from the thing locking up and not coming out of sleep. Besides just having the backlight turn off, has anyone found a solution?
I'm a bit upset about this, but I always keep my contacts (my only important data) synced with my exchange server.
Should i try a replacement phone, or will i have the same issues?

AHH NO! 2nd memory card gone

Ok, so when i first got the TD2 i bought a 16gb mem with it, but about 2 weeks in, it just wiped my memory card and made it useless, trying it on the computer, on the phone, even in a camera brought nothing up. I was hoping it was the memory card faulty. So i bought a new 16gb and it's gone and done it again. Just randomly, whilst using coreplayer to watch some blue, my phone froze. so i did a soft reset and now my mem card has disappeared. all my apps saved it it have gone, all my pics...just everything
what the hell is going on?
I use spb shell, luckily that was saved to my phone so i stil have it, but half the apps on it don't work now
I installed Advanced Config 3.3 and turned on SD-card powermanagement... shortly after that I lost one 8GB sandisk card ... Diamond2 could not see it anymore. My PC could not see it anymore.... Maybe it was the Advanced Config setting that somehow broke it or maybe it was coincidence?? ****ty thing is I didn't make a backup so lost a lot of nice pictures on it...
If you use activesync, you would need to configure WM device center to NOT replace items on the device. Switch that to replace items on desktop.
If its not that, then maybe shell is the culprit. Or advanced config.

Nope, it's not just deleted data. In my case the SD-card is really broken. I cannot open it in any device anymore.
I had this problem with my Xperia twice, and I'm far from convinced that the TD2 is any more stable.
I haven't tracked down what is causing it, but I have never had any problems with SD cards in all my years with PalmOS or Symbian devices. I think it is just a 'feature' of Windows Mobile because the system is unstable and prone to crashes which corrupt the cards.

Well corruption can usually be repared by a format or something like that but in my case the card isn't even recognized by the system anymore, it just won't show up.'
this has happened to me too. twice!

Really? Talk about 'give a dog a bad name'. If you knew a little more you'd soon realise it has zip zero and sweet buggerall to do with WM, which is stable, flexible and reliable, though the UI is admittedly rather dated, and everything to do with HTC's implementation.

Yep twice with me as well
once with normal TF3D and once with SPB shell
Just totally broken my card...tried using 2 usb readers and 2 computers with it...nothing
tried putting it into an sd card converter and putting into 2 cameras...nothing
Be warned people!
Back up your stuff! TD2 looks like it enjoys corrupting micro sd cards and making you pay for more
perhaps HTC has a contract with Sandisk or something
Keeps sandisk bringing in profits in this troubled time of recession

Our opinions differ it seems, but unless someone finds the actual cause we will never know the truth.
My apologies for not knowing much - I am trying to learn WM after many years on other platforms. All I have to go on is my personal experiences with 4 WM devices (all originating from HTC), and those experiences are not great. WM has a bad name in my eyes, from direct personal experience. Maybe I am maligning it falsely if the true cause of the problems I experience lies elsewhere...I am willing to have an open mind.
I am several £££ out of pocket, having lost 2 16GB cards to these devices - a problem I have only ever suffered with HTC/WM. Given that HTC is the leading manufacturer of WM devices it does not reflect well on either them or the OS platform they are working with that they cannot create stable bug-free systems.
Are these genuine memory sticks?
I work in repairs and I have had a number of HTC devices along with others too that have had this issue.
It turned out that on average, 7/10 devices had fake memory sticks from reputable vendors who were duped.
1/10 were corrupt memory cards just from use/standard wear and tear or just corrupt out of factory.
and the last 1/10 was a faulty memory card reader on the device -
I had an original SANDISK 8GB micro-SD card in it. I now have a 6GB in it which still is OK for now... But backups will be made. I am going to get me another 8GB card and possible trade in the broken one (warranty)... these things should not brake this soon.. the card was 3 weeks old!! If the second one also breaks than maybe it's a D2 problem??
edit: I have to notice that it broke down I did turn on the SD-card powermanagement save option from Advanced Config.... maybe that's the cause??
I've had my 16gb card in the phone since April 15th when I got my unit...not one issue touch wood so touch its the phone ... if anything, it might be your specific unit but I would still bet on the card itself
As an example, I got a 32GB USB stick from Kingston - so not exactly a small make
Within a week, I lost 31.8GB and was left with 2mb.
Data has gone and is not retrievable. Kingston have now tested and diagnoised the memory is corrupt and unfixable so they are replacing it.
So it can happen
An advice: Whenever you do a operation such as backup or something, do not charge your phone!! That really hurt your SD card....

what do you mean? Like no charge when on activesync? I can't see
why that would hurt the card.
Did you guys format your mem cards before using them?
I have a stack of SanDisk MicroSD cards (256mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb hc, 8gb hc and 16Gb hc). My 16Gb and 4GB cards both had faults (the 16gb one wouldn't format and the 4gb one just didn't work and wasn't even recognised as being in my phone or card reader).
SanDisk have a 5 year warranty, so I registered all of my cards on their website, reported the fault and had them replaced. The whole process took about 4 weeks, but they sent me brand new 16gb and 4gb cards.
Sometimes flash media just fails...
maybe you all should get transcend.. they give you lifetime warranty...
Yep, but I lost my reciept ... and I need that to trade in.. But yesterday a bought a new one... maybe I use the new reciept to trade in the old.. cards are the same size en look the same.. so i'll probably get away with that.
Me too - lost the 8 GB card in my TD2 last week, it's completely unreadable now, can't be formatted, etc. Never happened to me before. Hope this isn't s.th. serious with the TD2...

SD Card is Damaged. Try Reformatting it.

Anyone else getting this with their S4? I bought my S4 two weeks ago and a Sandisk 64gb card to go with it and started seeing this error about twice a day. I returned it for a Samsung SD and didn't see the error for almost a week until today.
The card actually appears to be fine, all I have to do is remount it after seeing the message and all is good, it's just worrisome cause I store all my photos on there. I'm wondering if it could be the phone itself? I have one day left to exchange it, but it's rooted.
SD Errors are because the card is physically moving when its being written to. This cause bad sectors on the card. Try putting a piece of thin scotch tape and cut to shape of the face of the SD Card. See if it fits more snug....
Are you jogging with the S4 or something? Samsung SD's are class 10 which I think write faster. Maybe that is less likely to cause damage because its written so fast? Not sure....
Try the tape trick and see if it reduces the problem. Else its a physical problem with the slot.
i also have a class 10 64gb, some guy on the forum posted this problem too, he said that by formating the card with a PC and then formating it with the format utility in the phone settings has solved his problem. If not, might be a slot problem like slider mentionned
I had this problem too with my 32 gig class 10. When I put my shock absorbant case on it my problem went away

I had never had an issue with a Sandisk card until my S3 ate a 32GB. I then started readibg how the S3 ate non- Samsung cards. I have been using a Samsung card with no issues
hope you make regular sdcard backups and copy to pc
polish_pat is correct, reformat your card with sdformatter, use Full Erase On and Size Adjustment On
Of course backup first
you shouldn't have to reformat again in phone--
if the card is good this should solve your issue
I had tried 3 different San disk 64GBP class 10 cards and had this problem, the fourth one works so far...doing some searching I found lots of complaints from lots of different device forums about this card. Only fix I found was running chkdsk repair on the card in Windows but this only worked for a few people ( couldn't save my first three cards)
anyway, imo exchange the card or better yet buy a different brand

Posting here as doing a search revealed this is the closest to the problem that I'm having. I've had my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 for approximately 1 month now. I purchased a Sandisk 32GB SD Card for the phone. Two days ago I began experiencing issues where when unlocking the phone I would notice the card would unmount then remount (this was in the notification bar). Later that night, the card unmounted and there wasn't any way to get it recognized again. I posted in some other forums and someone said there were some good posts here.
I've contacted Sandisk regarding the card and they refused any involvement stating it's a problem with the phone, not the card. They determined this because once I was able to get the phone to recognize the card and plugged the phone into the PC, the card was able to be read. As long as it's readable, it's fine. After dealing with this I eventually found my MicroSD to SD reader and plugged it into my media reader in my printer. I had quite a few issues from time to time reading the card, however I can't 100% for sure say whether this is the card or the printer.
Anywho, I grabbed copies of what I needed. Formatted the card on the PC, then formatted it on the phone. I began to copy my entries however at one point instead of saying I had 29.* GB Available, it said something like 2.0 EV of 3.0 PE or something like that... these weren't the typical numbers I've seen nor the units of storage space. I apologize that I can't recall that information. I reformatted again and it worked. Left the card in the phone empty over night then tried to copy files later today. This worked.
Now, approximately 48 hours after the problems began, I noticed more issues. SD card stated that it had been damaged and that I should reformat it. While this message stayed in notifications, I confirmed I was still able to read files on the SD card. When googling that error hoping I'd find more resources, the card again unmounted.
One of the resources I found had me do a CHKDSK /F /X on the card. I did this and found no issues. I've replaced it back into the phone and it seems to be working for the moment.
1) Are there any confirmations if this is a bad card, or if perhaps any applications are causing the card to do this? I do have QuickPic and have enabled some of the hidden file features if that helps.
2) Do we know if there are any logs that can be pulled to help verify this?
3) Is it a specific card? (I've heard SanDisk 32gb, but also have heard non-Samsung SD will fail)
Looking to get this resolved ASAP. This card was purchased directly from AT&T when the phone was purchased. I am just looking for some confirmation that if I have to buy another card, I'm not going to gamble if that's going to have the problem as well.
Thanks! If I forgot anything please ask!
Edit: Per the thread, this is a Class 4 card. Also the phone was not moving when it was writing data. I've been couch-ridden all day and unlocked it. I don't believe the phone was in deep-sleep mode as I had received a text not long before I began noticing these messages.
same problem
i have the same problem and guess what ?
the phone is acting like the ***** it stays ok for 3 weeks while that time i download to many stuff to my ext card 32g Elixir Memory after that it crach and give me notification that sd card is damaged and i have to reformat it sucks
