Cingular 8525 Scroll Wheel Mystery - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have enjoyed my 8125 and when I upgraded to the 8525, I ritualistically came here for all the answers. However, there is one issue that I have experienced that is not echoed by anyone else.
I have ROM version 1.34.502.1 and have the following apps installed:
Eten Dialer
Phonealarm
PQzII
TomTom 6 Navigator
TCPMP
Google Maps
Live Search
The problem is that when I freshly boot the phone and place a call, I can manipulate the in-call volume via the scroll wheel. Up, down, no problem. However, when I exit out of the dialer screen and return to it a few hour later, I find that I can no longer turn the in-call volume down via the scroll wheel--only up works.
If anyone can shed some light on this matter, I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you!

Anyone have any insights into this matter?

Not much help, but just an observation. The behaviour shown by your scroll volume is certainly not normal. I tested this out on mine. What I did notice was that there is some lag in the response of the scroll volume - so long in fact that it can appear to be non-responsive. It seems the device "remembers" the number of clicks up and keeps trying to raise the volume even though its at maximum. So even if I then scroll down it can take a few seconds for it to complete trying to raise the volume before it begins trying to respond to my down scroll. In fact this behaviour can make it appear as if when scrolling down it actually is raising the volume - but I think this is only due to laggy behaviour in my case?
Mike

I found that the E-Ten dialer disabled my scroll wheel short-cut to call history and quick dial. When I removed it these functions came back. Shame, I like the big buttons.
Mike

Thank you guys for your responses. It wasn't a huge annoyance for me. I just don't like it when functionality just evaporates away from my phone inexplicably. Hopefully, it can be resolved somehow? I will look for further responses.
Thank you all in advance.

It's the PQzII that disable the in-call volume adjustment. But my version is: "down" -> turn in-call volume down, "up" -> switch to today.

PQz version up
Hi all,
I uploaded new PQzII.exe for Hermes.
http://www.nicque.com/pqz/PQzII.htm
2007-04-21 0.0.7-4 [Bug fix] PQzII_20070421_0007-4_Hermes.zip
*) Jog wheel (Volume Down) bug fix while calling.
Please try it and let me know if you find any trouble.
cheers,
tom
*)Edit
if you use "0x76" as any function. It has been changed to "0xAA".
There are some Hermes devices as like DoCoMo hTcZ/Softbank X01HT have "MOJI" button.
The button outputs "0x76" but it could be a cause of Jog wheel problem while calling.
as for me, I used 0x76 key code for IME on/off. and changed to "0xAA".
if you don't use 0x76 you don't need to care about this.
cheers,
tom

Hermes / 8525 - Bug with the button repeat rate setting

Hi All,
Scrolling does not work as expected. In my HTC Hermes – Cingular 8525 there is a bug with the button repeat rate setting.
I have tried various settings using the – Settings – Buttons – Up/Down Control – Repeat Rate, and still have a problem with the behavior.
For example, hold down the 5-way button to scroll through contacts for a few seconds and the highlight of contacts continues to repeat long after I let up on the 5-way hardware button.
On my HTC Wizard / Cingular 8125, I can set the repeat rate to the maximum setting and the scrolling stops immediately when I let up on the button. This is the expected behavior.
The 8525 continues to scroll and scroll and scroll. This is a bug.
Anyone else experience this?
Any thoughts on a fix through a registry hack?
Thanks in advance.

No, can't say I'm experiencing that problem. Or any problem for that matter. My Cingular 8525 is still going strong. I hope you get this fixed.
same problem with my Oz trion. Very annoying.
I had the same problem with my Cingular 8525...even returned it for a new one. The problem didn't exist in the store (tested it), but started after I changed the settings to my tastes. Try going to Today/Settings/Sounds & Notifications/Hardware buttons. Make sure the box is NOT checked. No button sounds, but your phone should speed up. It worked for me. Now I'm a poster not a lurker!!
I had the same issue with my T-mobile Vario II. Sound disabling has solved it for me, too. For non-experts this might be very odd that the solution to a navigation issue is to be found at a sound function. Happy we are that some people take the struggle to find such unexpected solutions. Thank you, Bookworm!
I had this exact same problem with my 8525. I would scroll thru my contacts and be like "God this scroll wheel is slow..... stop!! damnit, quit going after I stop turning the wheel!" I set the repeat rate to the fastest and took the sound off the the hardware buttons and now it works like a charm. PERFECT!!

Assign Speed Dial to Hardware Button?

Is there any way of assigning Speed Dial (not Voice Speed Dial) to a hardware button?
Why do I want to do this? I'd like to be able to press a button which would bring up the Speed Dial list. I would then use the jog wheel to scroll through the list and scroll-click to dial that number.
With the phone application open to the keypad press the d-pad left and it brings up the speed dial list.[ Power>Green Phone>Left D-Pad ]Three buttons but still pretty quick.
quicker: power->green phone->jog wheel DOWN (or UP for call history)
Hi all,
I've lost this shortcut (Green button->left D-PAD) and I don't know what happened. As I lost also the Smart dialing menu item. It happened to me once before I upgrade my ROM which returned that back. Now I lost it again and I am going crazy trying to know how this happened or which application I installed did that.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks in advance

With an unaltered Ext_ROM, a hard reset should do the trick.
I don't know if I am missing something, but neither of the key sequences suggested (Power>Green Phone>Left D-Pad or power->green phone->jog wheel DOWN) do anything at all on my Hermes. I even tried a Soft Reset before trying these sequences and nothing happens.
I'm running the latest (South African) HTC ROM, as posted here, if that makes any difference.

Not sure what is happening there, because I have not used that ROM. Did you install all the cabs from the extended rom? If so, it may be that this was left out of the South African version for some reason. My TyTN is out for repair/replacement due to SA issues and I can't check it, but I think the latest TyTN ROM functioned this way. My 8525 with latest Cingular ROM certainly does.

I screwed up! Volume slider not working...Is smartskey the solution?

Hi there. I opened up my Wizard (thinking I was ultra-cool) to fix a keyboard problem that I have been having (in landscape mode, the touch-screen doesn't work)...
After doing this, I landed up with a second problem. The volume slider doesn't work. Now, I can't scroll but more importantly, I can't mute calls (aka silence incoming calls, put the ringer off)
Whats the alternate solution? After several hours of research, I'm thinking this is the possibility. I can use a program like smartskey and re-assign the mute functionality to another button like the END button. For example, if a call comes in, the first time I hit END, it will silence it and the second time I hit END, it will ignore the call. Is that possible?
Please help. I am totally dependent on my wizard for EVERYTHING!

volume key overrides keylock

I'm using an out the box Orange Touch HD (rom - 1.19.61.1 WWE)
I have found that the volume key still works even when the keylock is active.
I have used HDTweak already for other things and couldn't see anything relating to this. also searched forum to no avail (maybe not well enough )
Does anyone know of a way to fix this as it clearly seems to be an oversight.
Thanks in advance.

At a guess, i think its meant to be like that so you can adjust the volume if you are using it as a music player without having to unlock the phone. Does it affect you when you use the phone? (sorry i don't know how to help but I just thought I'd add my opinion)
thanks for the reply. i understand what you are suggesting but if i press the volume key then by default it adjusts the ringer volume and not the system volume. This is a problem as when its in a pocket i have already had more than one situation where I have gone to get the phone out and without realising, turned the ringer to silent.
I have a related difficulty... Hope you don't mind me adding to this thread rather than setting up a new one...
If my phone (Touch HD on ROM 1.56.405.1) is PIN-locked and I receive a call, I'm unable to change the in-call volume without telling the caller to wait while I unlock the phone and alter the volume... Is there any way of allowing the volume keys to work in this situation without having to unlock? I've search high and low for an answer or some suitable app to handle this.
Thanks.
Sorry - just done another search in these forums and have seen some similar questions and responses... I'll take a look there.

Hi,
I tried using the volume keys when the device was locked, you can indeed adjust the ringer volume whilst the device is locked, although if you try doing this after you switch the screen off by pressing the top power button, pressing the volume keys has no effect then.
Providing the screen is off, you shouldn't have any problems switching your phone to silent unintentionally .
Just thought I mention this.
it's a known problem that regards standard windows mobile locking system. Only solution is using another locking program (s2u2, pocketscreen, touch lock pro, lockmelite and so on). There are on this forum aplenty.
regarding to the other problem with PIN and incall volume i am not really sure but again iirc it's a winmo default locking "feature".
strange...
When I use the keylock (long press endcall-button), my volume keys won't work.. even when the screen is on.
This has been on my stock rom (1.14 NLD), new stock rom and on Dutty's 3.3 XT...

Nearly fixed all my issues with my HD2, only a few more. Any help appreciated

Hi,
As some of you may know I've recently got a HD2, and had a few gripes. Some have been issues with the phone, some have been just me not being used to HTC and/or Windows mobile. I must say the support on here has been nothing short of excellent
Anyway here are my remaining issues, I've searched for answers but can't find them. I have found other posts relating to my issues but not resolving them. I've tried wiki, and hints and tips.
1.Sometimes while making a call the screen turns back on and my ear presses all kinds of functions, and ultimately hangs up the call. I know a few people have had this issue, but has it been resolved, and if so how?
2.Sometimes when I'm typing and press 12# the cursor jumps to the middle of the text. Again I know a few people have had this issue, is there a fix? I must admit, I think I've noticed it happens more typing email rather than SMS.
3.And finally, the call volume. I find that the call volume is very loud and I have to have it on it's quietest setting, and still sometimes it distorts/crackles on certain words/letters, depending on how the person on the other end is talking. The other problem with having to turn the volume down is that when it's connected to my parrot handsfree in my car the call volume is too low and so have to turn it back up on the phone again.
Issues 1 & 3 are very irritating, and I must say pretty poor for a phone of this calibre. Issue 2 isn't major, but still annoying. Are there any fixes or workarounds for these????

I never had this but read in other posts, that message receiving will activate the screen when set as wakup on.

I also have the problem. what works for me is in a call, take phone from your ear adjust volume 2 clicks up and then completely down. this will reduce the volume in a call further when it was already set to mimimum. about the handsfree system i dont use that.

I get this too! I thought it was just me.
Hopefully there will be a fix soon, I never got it on the stock o2 ROM 1.43. So far I've only noticed it on the 1.61 ROM and 1.48 Rom WWE which Im using now.

Do you mean the sceen will activate if there's an incoming message? Mine activates whether there's a message or not Where can I find the setting for wakeup on/off?
Also I'll try that trick with the call volume. Shouldn't have to do it though, bad flaw imo

1. For some ppl, this is due to the hair intermittently covering the sensor. Would be cool to just press a button to turn of the screen in the call.
2. The new SMS-fix from HTC (released today?) apparently fixes this issue. There is a CAB available in one of the threads, if you are on a cooked ROM.
3. You can find a reg edit here to try: HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\inCall AND InCall2
Change the value of InitVol to "2". >One of them is "5"

1. I don't think the hair issue is a problem for me lol
2. What is a cooked ROM?
3. Do you change InitVol to 2 on both, or just the one that's 5?

2. A cooked ROM is one released by other source than HTC, normally newer versions of Betas, e.g. from one of the Chef:s here on XDA-developers.
3. 2 on both.

OK, I've changed the initvol so will see how that works next time I take a call. Many thanks for your help
I have had issue 1 & 3. I upgraded to ROM 1.61 and that solved all of the issues that I had with my phone and also increased the speed too. Issue 3 was very annoying for me and I sent my phone back to o2 for a replacement and got the replacement yesterday. I imediately flashed to ROM 1.61 which solved any issues I had, but the crackling at high frequencies still remain. I guess I have to live with it until some fix comes out. The high call volume is still an issue.

1. The problem happend to me several time, but I have boldhead, so in my case hairs are innocent
I notices twice that screen light up when I have been calling someone and pickuping phone on the other side of the line was the trigger. But this could be of course just some kind of coincidence.
3. thanks for reg entry, this is the first real reason to modifie some entry at this phone, because my calls can hear people standing next to me
First of all ... update your radio and your ROM. From my experience Xannytech is the best so far, in terms of design and stability. I3v5y is also nice, but a lil bit more buggy (not his fault, it's WM6.5.3).
And what I really think on 2. is that you maybe press the cursor button. I think the keyboard from HTC is not really developed for capacitive screens. I heard TouchPal is quite good. I dont write that much so I dont need it

Could it be the sensitivity of the touch screen ??
Ive had something similar with the sms on screen keyboard.
here is the thread to get the cab to reduce the sence of the screem . works for me with the On Screen Keyboard
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5071018&postcount=430
I've suffered from issue two and its deffinately not a case of fat fingers. After I noticed this happening I was very careful about where I was pressing, yet the cursor still jumped.
I've got around this by just using the long keypress to select icons from the normal qwerty keyboard.
On a similar line to this (and I think it may, fingers crossed, have been fixed in the latest update) is when you open an sms thread from the sense interface, if you start typing the XT9/ABC toggle is switched to XT9, yet the input is standard ABC, switching it back and forth still doesn't do anything!! Just another little thing I noticed.
