8525 and Edge working? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Ok, quick question. Like many others, I upgraded from a 8125 to a 8525 using T-Mobile. Question being, on my service status indicators, I only get a "G" icon, and can connect to the internet. Should I get an "E" icon for using Edge? The 8125 did. Glitch or just GPRS?

I see G E and U symbols when connected with that service... so you are just out of EDGE range I think.

8525 only shows "G" for both GPRS & Edge and "U" for 3G.
If you were to upgrade to the new ROM, then you would see "G", "E", "3G" & "H" here in the States, In Europe you would also get "U".

My Jamin shows "E" instead of "G" after

after updating my jamin with the latest rom the network icon now shows "E" instead of "G" although I dont have EDGE technology and I use GPRS. I successfully made a GPRS connection and after disconnecting it shows "G" for a while then turns back to "E"!!!! anyone experience the same problem!?
this is not a problem. If your network is able to work with Edge, it will appear "E" and than when you connect it will appera "G" (because your device donĀ“t have EDGE). This icon it represents what your network is able to offer.
the problem is; I KNOW THAT MY PROVIDER DOESNT HAVE EDGE!!!

who is your provider? as far as i know all providers in the use who is capable of using this phone on thier network is edge capable. outside of the small mom and pops. cingular/tmobile/cellularone are all edge capable.
sorry just read this thread over at hf.
I've had this . It momenterily shows the E and then reverts back to G. I am with Orange UK and I am in a Strong 3G network cell. I know that Orange are suposed to running edge out to areas with no 3G but not sure when.
I can only assume that it is picking up an edge signal from somewhere. To tell you the truth I wish I saw the E all the time . That would at least give me edge speeds .
This is defo a problem (Well doesn't hinder the phone). I was using my Jamin with copilot which was connected the whole time to Copilot Live via a GPRS connection. If I come out of the copilot screen and initiat a call the G symbol changes to an E . It then reverts back to a G when the call finishes.
Maybe your provider is doing some EDGE testing?

3G Icon

I have yet to get the TyTN, but I am curious as if there is a noticeable way of it being connected to 3G.
On the Wizard you get a G for GPRS and E for Edge.
Does a 3 show up?
The Vodafone ones have a 3 that appears where the G would be for GPRS. The HTC ones have a U. I *think* there are EDGE versions showing an E but I have yet to personally see it...
R
There is a "G" for GPRS and/or EDGE.
There is a "U" for UMTS and/or HSDPA.

Confusion about Cingular and 3G/U/H/G/E icon

I'm a little confused about the internet connection icons that vary according to ROM and carrier. If I'm on Cingular in the US what 3G technology is this? Is it UMTS or HSDPA? Also, which icon set would I need to properly display whether I'm on GPRS, EDGE, or the 3G network?

all 3G cingular towers in the US have been upgraded to support HSDPA. if your device can use HSDPA, and you're on a cingular UMTS tower, then you'll be able to take advantage of HSDPA. HSDPA activates and deactivates on the fly, so if you're not actively transferring data the device will shut down HSDPA and fall back to UMTS until data beings to move again.
if you are using a cingular 8525 with 1.34 ROM, you'll see "U" when connected via UMTS, regardless of HSDPA being active or not.
if you are using a cingular 8525 with 2.06 ROM, you'll see "3G" when connected via UMTS/HSDPA, or optionally (via registry edit) "3G" with UMTS and "H" when HSDPA is actived.
i hope that was semi clear...i tried!
wait a minute. ive got a U showing, but i have 3G with a 3G simcard, so if it doesnt say 3G, than im not getting 3G? ive always thought the U was 3G.

How to Differentiate between GPRS, EDGE, UMTS & HSDPA?

I am using Hermes, (Dopod 838Pro Hong Kong Version) with
ROM 1.23.708.4
Radio Rom 1.06.00.10
Protocol 32.37.7010.01H
The network I am using supports HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS where I have not subscribed HSDPA service.
When I was with my Prophet, I saw there were an "E" icon and "G" icon to differentiate between EDGE and GPRS network respectively. However, I only get "U" icon and
"G" icon to identify UMTS and GPRS connection respectively.
My question is
1. HOW TO FIND OUT THE "E" ICON FOR EDGE?
(I have tried the registry tweak EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon, but it was not successful)
2. IS THERE ANY "H" ICON FOR HSDPA CONNECTION?
3. IF I HAVE HSDPA SUBSCRIPTION, IS THERE ANY PROCEDURE TO CONNECT HSDPA / DISCONNECT HSDPA BACK TO UMTS?
Thank you very much!
I dont think you will get HSDPA with that radio. You will need to upgrade the radio rom at least (if not the OS too).

Oh yes, I do have HSDPA with that version of Radio ROM. There's no indication for HSDPA. You have to use FieldText.exe to check it out. Or simply browse a web site and note the download speed (I use Spb GPRS Monitor)

Just about all your questions have come up before!
So for example you will find references to this as the best speed test - all you do is tapit into your device browser:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
You'll find references to this info:
"G" - GPRS, GSM and EDGE
"U" - UMTS and HSDPA
You'll find there are tweaks for changing the non specific nature of the above.
Try that google sticky at the top of the messages list.
Cheers

Hi,
I am using the latest German HTC ROM on my Hermes
RUU_Hermes_QTEK_GER_2.15.257.1_104_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship.exe
This displays
G=GPRS
E=Edge
3G=UMTS
H=HSDPA

My Atom Life Says "3G" not "H" . . . Is That Normal?

My friend has the exact same subscription to the exact same moibile operator as me (MTC-Vodafone in Kuwait). We both have the same access point and proxy settings.
His Nokia E90 says "3.5G" right under the signal strength bars when he starts a data connection. But my O2 Atom Life just says "3G" in the white square box at the top of the screen and also in the smaller white box above the signal strength bars when I start a data connection.
Does anyone know why that is? I thought that 3.5G is the same as HSDPA. Is that true? And if so, isn't my O2 HSDPA-capable? And shouldn't it say "H" in the white box?
I'm running WM5 if that makes any difference . . .
Please help. I want my 3.5G!
WinCE displays the signal it can achieve. Maybe it's not getting an HSDPA signal where you're at.

What I can say is that you can only see "H" when you have HSDPA signal and also when your using your O2 to surf the web or checking email or doing some data transfer via 3G.
Other than that, you will only see "3G"
That is what's happening for my Dopod 838 pro.
I'm getting my Atom Life later in the afternoon

I have exactly same problem, my Hermes works perfectly well but the Atom Life never shows the H, I spoke to my operator and they showed me an Atome life (Chinese version) and that showed the H, no problem whatsoever but mine (English version) no way it will show, so the people at the operator said I should get it repaired as it should show an H when in HSDPA coverage.
O2 have now had it in for repair twice and last time even said that it does not support HSDPA, I just hope your service center in Kuwait is better than the one in Hong Kong coz they have absolutely no idea about mobile phones.
It should not matter whether WM5 or WM6 according to the operator.
3.5G is the same as HSDPA so there you are correct.
I'm not getting the H sign after I upgraded to WM6. When I was using WM5, the H sign appear when there is 3.5G service.
I contacted O2 support and they ask me to connect to internet when I am in the 3.5G area. I did and the indicator changed to H. So, I replied back to them stating that this is not what it supposed to be (in WM5, you do not need to connect) and they replied that it will be in the list of improvement... sigh...
normally without data passing thru it will fall back to 3G connection, when there is data going thru it will use 3.5G (HSDPA) if available. however i think the today screen or signal update is bugged it never show the current status when changed.
u can try downloading a big file and turn off the screen (hit the power button once) then turn it back on again. it will update the current connection speed.
btw I am using Atom Life WM6 CHT
