how to connect to internet at home AND work - Networking

I'm still confused after looking for solutions.
My situation is as follows:
I have a I-mate jasjar WM5 - wifi at home and laptop at work which is connected through a secured network to the internet (where I can freely work with)
On my I-mate I have in the 'connections' setting:
- home: at the tab proxy setting I just ticked 'this network connects to the internet'
- my work network: same, but also ticked 'this network uses a proxyserver' and filled in the proxy server with recuired username and pasword.
In the network management I selected Home for 'programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using'
I selected 'My Work network' for programs that automatically connect to a private network...'
So far, so good, but know it begins!
Surfing the internet using my I-mate at home works without problems and I can use programs like netfront, resco radio,..
At work however, I can only surf the internet with my I-mate if I change the network managementsetting in both cases to 'my work network'. BUT it is not possible for me to check for example my gmail through outlook or use resco radio. It seems that I only can connect straight to the internet with internet brouwsers, but that other programs cannot access it????
I use active sync 4.2 at work and the setting 'this computer is connected to' is set to automatic.
All help would be welcome

does this help?

proxy for pocket ie

I just got my kjam today, about 5 hours ago, just took it off the charge like 4 hours ago and loving it so far. but my problem...:
I connect to my wireless router fine but my internet uses a proxy, so how do i set the proxy on pocket ie?(my isp requires i use a proxy to browse the net)
If i can't set a proxy on pocket ie, does netfront work with wm5 and does it support proxies?
ok, this i havent tested this but think its right:
On your wireless settings page (start/settings/connections/network cards/
Pick the wireless SSID relating to your home WLAN, click (not hold, just click) it'll open the config screen. in the connects to box, change to "my work network" or another network if you have edited networks already.
ok out back to the connections page
open "connections" under "my work network" configure the proxy server
Hopefully this will now work

there is no "my work network" under connections it just has my wap and gprs connection.
also i installed netfront and put the proxies in there but still nothing.
in that case try:
settings/connections
Advanced tab
select networks
programs wich automatically connect to the internet should use:
- click new
Make a new wifi network setting (call it whatver, wifi or your ISP name it doesn't matter)
Configure the proxy for that setting.
Revert to reply 1 to change the wifi SSID connection to associate with the new wifi network, and it will use the proxy settings you specified.
(hopefully!)
alright, i did as you said but i have another problem now. it won't even connect to my router. I took the WEP key i had off and still, wont connect. and yes its on mixed (b&g)
It says available then i click and hold click on connect. it says connecting then goes back to available... and wififofum does no good when i click on connect.
pocket ie uses my work network proxy settings and if you setup that way then it wont connect via wifi or/and messenger wont connect to the internet, i use netfront mostly better then pocket ie
i gave me kjam a static ip and it connects to the router right away, but still no browsing. im using netfront as well but every time i open it up i get an error and the "error reporting" thing comes up and asks me if i want to send the error.. is netfront WM5 compatible?
-update-
I just installed netfront v3.3 and connected to my wireless network and its giving me this error: "Cannot load page. TypeNS no server is specified" where to i specify the dns server? couldn't find it in netfront so its gonna be in the network settings of the kjam..
-UPDATE-
I GOT IT!!! IT WORKS.. wow ok but one last question, when you go to start>settings>connections>Network Cards and then click on "Network Adapters" on the bottomw, which one is the built in wifi card cuz i set the IP and DNS for like 4 of those adappters.
-FINAL UPDATE-
so i accidently hard reset my device but it did me some good. cuz i did a soft reset after the setup process and now have no junk apps installed
but i installed netfront 3.3 and set the proxies init, connected to my wireless network and it worked right away. msn messenger still isn't working but i installed IM+ and that works. i`m posting this using my kjam so all is well

Wifi at work say it connects to internet?

I have finally sussed out the wireless on my new JAMin with one exception. I have my wifi connection in the office set as a location of At Work so I can terminal services into my servers, map drives etc but... I cannot connect to the internet. It always wants to fire up my GPRS even though I have internet access at work.
And if I change my settings to say it connects to the internet then everytime I try to do any work things it tries to start my VPN. How can I have it set to work but also allow me internet access.
Many Thanks
This is a very simple (though somewhat confusing) thing, having to do with WM (all versions) connection management.
Here's what you have to do:
Go to Start->Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection.
You will see two lists. Top one for apps that connect to the internet and bottom for the ones that connect to network.
To make your WiFi connection usable for both you have to select the same thing in both lists.
For example if you set up your WiFi as 'Work' select 'My work network' in both lists.
Sorry to threadjack but I am having the same issue connecting to my home network, that also provides internet access. I want to use edge while away from home. I can connect to my wifi network, remote into my pc and browse shared files, but cannot connect to the internet. How can I set this up?
Well I am guessing your EDGE connection is defined under 'My ISP' profile and in the dialog I mentioned in my first post your top list reads 'My ISP' while bottom reads 'My work Network'.
Set both lists to 'My ISP' and your WiFi network connection 'To Internet' and it should work.

ppc (using USB activesync cable) to access the internet thru LAN?

i have an i-mate Jasjar wm5, I am using USB activesync cable to connect my device to my desktop PC. I would like to access the internet using LAN-DSL in my office.
Any idea or suggestions on how to do it?
Suggestions, insights, or any kind of guidance is highly appreciated.
unless you have set it to block it
then your device connected to activesync will allways have the same
lan network access as the pc
you prob have to change connection in settings->connection->connection advantage and pick mynetwork rather then my isp

thanks for the quick reply. activesync (v4.5) is on the exceptions list of windows firewall, hence it is not blocked.
My Work Network connection settings (modem and VPN) is empty. do we have to input any settings on them (modem and/or VPN)? On the proxy settings - I checked the box for 'This network connects to the Internet', I did several tests on unchecking/checking the box on 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - tried both IP of my desktop PC (192.168.1.12) and default gateway (192.168.1.1) on ports 8080, 80. I noticed though - the box for 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet' - always goes unchecked everytime I go back to check the settings.
i did several test settings, but it doesn't worked either. always it says 'This page cannot be displayed, connection was lost check settings'
any idea on these? thanks for your time
guess you could try changing the dns to what the pc is using
and try with other applciations like the network tools ping
and messenger to see if it's a IE issue
I also want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 usb
hi, i have the same problem, i want to connect to internet through activesync 4.5 and wm5 herms. i am not good a computer use so could you please guide me step by step. i can synchronize but can't use internet.
if its through the office network, you may need to play with some settings to "fool" the office network to let you out.
The way to check what im talking about is to download http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/ portable firefox, and see if it connects by default. In my office, i had to input the LAN proxy settings into firefox to make it work. If this is the same for you, then i guess you'll have to do the same on the PPC. If you do find that this is the problem, and you cannot connect with firefox, post back and ill see if i can help
Turn off "Advanced Features"

There's a setting in ActiveSync "Advanced" and uncheck the box. See if that helps. It apparently has helped others with USB connection issues.
rightclick on ActiveSync icon on systemtray --> connection settings... ---> config as my pic you can access internet thought your PC. If you still can't connect to internet please hardreset your PDA

WiFi + VPN + ActiveSync / Internet Explorer

Hi all !
look next post for solution
I've been trying to get this thing to work for ages (on both WM5 and WM6) but have been totally unsuccessfull. So far I cannot get the VPN to be dialed over WiFi (!!!).
The idea is to log on a public WiFi hotspot (behind nat) and to be able to "dial" a VPN connection back to my office via PPTP (as it works reliably behind nat) and use that connection for ActiveSync and other needs.
I tried following this howto: http://kb.iu.edu/data/atcn.html
The idea being here is to use "Work Connection" which allows VPN for everything and direct all connections to "work" with an "exception" rule (*.*/*).
Here's a brief summary of the things I did:
1. Create a "dummy" internet connection (My ISP) and select it as the "internet connection" in "connections"
2. Create the "real" connection (My Work) and setup the VPN server with username and password (tested and working with XP). Type PPTP, the rest of the options are default (excluding compression and header compression which are disabled).
3. The "My Work" connection is set as default for "programs that automatically connect to a private network".
4. Create a rule for "exception for intranet addresses" under the "Advanced" tab in Connection settings. Add "*" and "*.*/*" to the URLs which are supposed to use the Work connection (and VPN).
5. Under the "network adapter" settings, select "My network adapter connects to The Internet".
Result: Explorer and ActiveSync don't even try to dial the VPN connection (i.e.... the firewall logs show no activity from the PDA).
It seems that the exceptions is never used, and also that ActiveSync (which is supposed to dial the work + Vpn connection) ignores it completely.
Traceroute/pings (from vxUtil) work to the VPN server. The WiFi connection can be used to surf the internet, so that works too. The VPN server accepts connections from a notebook connected to the same wifi (and it's outlooks syncs properly to the exchange server in the office). I have the same behaviour with both WM5 and WM6 on a Tytn and a Universal...
What am I missing???
Thanks for helping.
Solved.
Oops... the solutions was rather simple and embarassing.
The problem lies in the way WM5 handles the Wireless Profiles. Once you connect a WiFi card to an AP a "profile" is saved for future use. The profile contains the WEP/WPA credentials and the type of network: being either work or internet.
This is where the solution lies: You cannot change the type of network once you save the profile. WM5 (and WM6 as long as I know) remembers the work/internet status but never shows it in any screen.
If the selected type was "WORK" then the VPN is never dialed (because we're already in the WORK network). To get the VPN to be dialed you must select the "internet" network type.
What beats me is:
1. Why you cannot change the type of network (instead of having to delete and recreate the profile.
2. The "network card type" setting in the "network adapters page" is not used for WiFi connections, because it's always overwritten by the WiFi profile.
We have 1 setting that never works and 1 setting that works but which is never shown and cannot be changed.
Beats me!

Real headache with WiFi and GPRS

I have a o2 XDA orbit with the standard WM5 Factory ROM.
I have setup the wireless settings to get it to work with my router. It connects and I get an ip address etc.
However On clicking the Wifi symbol it says there are no data sessions active.
I have my wireless contact active and...
My only problem is internet explorer, active sysc or any other Internet program decides to open a GRPS connection.
HELP Please!!!!
Forgot to mention, a lot of websites say:
In Internet explorer, Menu-Options-Connections
Untick 'automatically detect settings'
Make 'Select network: The Internet' or 'Select Network: WAP network'.
I do not have this menu path.
wilan
if your at home you should have your "my connection connects me to work"
press start settings connections " tasks advanced" go into advanced these 2 windows should both be on my work network
on the top one press edit under proxy settings top box should be ticked press ok on the bottom my work network setup a vpn to either your router or pc either works
i have two broadbands one home one in work i manage both routers so i give my xda stellar the same ip in both places it connects without a glich
your only problem then is when your out and about and you need internet connection you need change the top box back to my isp
