any potential perf issue with IM+/Skype on SD card? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi!
I have skype and IM+ installed on my SD card-- is this not recommended? Im just wondering if im asking for performance issues having these installed to external memory- especially since they each have today plugins.
thanks!

I run Skype off my MicroSD, and Agile Messenger too. Both work perfectly fine. I do tend to UPX compress them as well, which speeds up loading time, as it's less to load off the card, but it should perform fine anyway.

although my phones currently broken (lcd broke on me) i did have IM+ running of my microSD card and it ran perfect
never ran it on main memory but didnt see any problems with it running on the card

WM5 Memory Question

Hi there, a rant a question, but i will try and keep it brief,
First me rant, why oh why when an ipod can carry 40gig of data in its tiny little space, have HTC not taken the concept behind their Hard Drive systems, I would NOT complain for a second if my pda got half a cm or a cm thicker but gained a gig memory, or more,
And question, I use a Hymalaya, (m1000) i have been interested in the Universal and the WM5 upgrade, My sister has just got one and i have had an explore of hers, whats with the 44meg for programs, i struggle with the xda getting over clogged, is this a problem for the Universal, i can only see that iam going to be more limited to what i can install on the Universal than iam on the hymalaya, this has stopped me upgrading,
Looking to confirm if iam right or seriously needing to revise more.
Thanks Guys, sorry the brief idea went,
OK, for a start, an Ipod uses a mini harddrive, which would NOT be suitable for a PPC (in my opinion, its not suitable for a music player) as they are so fragile. Also, a hard drive chews power, alot more than flash memory.
The approach adopted with most PPCs is to use an exteral storage card, which you install your programs onto.
WM5 uses a different method of storing data to previous versions. It uses RAM to run programs, and it uses ROM for persistent storage (e.g. installed programs).
My advice, get yourself a 1gb sd card (~£42) and install your programs onto that.
I have got a 1gig SD in my M1000, but have refused to install programs to the sd card because of crashing it its removed, (sdio wifi card in use as well) and the time factor for the device to have to access the sd card for system files,
take it this is the way forward for the wm5 devices
Yeah have to agree with you on the ipod thing, like i say, was just a rant, coincidentially, less than 10 minutes after a hard reset cos it all got a bit much for it,
Think iam going to try installing to the mmc card and see how stable it is,
Thanks heliosfa

Losing connectivity to storage card

I did some searching, but couldn't find a related post, so here goes ...
I have started to have an issue where I lose connectivity to my storage card ... my wizard just simply stops recognizing the card. Ejecting and re-inserting the card has mixed results, but after enough attempts it finally starts recognizing the card again.
It had worked fine for several months and now it is fairly regular problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
Cingular 8125
TopRam 2GB miniSD
My wizard is certainly passed warranty and all the ejecting/inserting can't be a good thing for the phone. Thought I would check with the community before purchasing a different miniSD to determine if the problem lies there.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Greg
I had this problem with the cheap miniSD card I bought, I replaced it for a Sandisk one, and the problem went away.
Have you tried the card in a computer via card reader?
Thanks for the confirmation ... I will pursue a new miniSD.
I ad tried it in a card reader awhile back and it worked fine. Maybe I will try a more exhaustive test to see if I can reproduce.
Thanks again, G
i am having the same problem with my 2gb sandisk. sometimes it doesnt recognize it and i have to eject/reinsert the card again. its a pain in the ass!
i have this problem once every month and it makes me feel like tossing my phone against the wall. just when u break into the phone and like it, everything ****s up.
today, just today, my memory card stops working, nothing will read the card anymore.
brand doesn't mean anything, my card was as 2gb Sandisk.
WOW .. maybe this is more of an issue than I suspected. What could be causing this issue ...
- Obviously it could be a wizard hardware issue, although I would suspect that lots of people would be having the problem.
- Could be a card problem, either lemons or specific brands/sizes
- Could it be ROM related?
- Other possible causes?
Maybe we need to gather some information on those that are having the problem.
My data is as follows:
- Cingular 8125
- TopRam 2GB miniSD
- Submitter 2.24 ROM
ROM Version 2.24.10.1 WWE
Radio Version 02.25.11
Protocol Version 4.1.13.12
ExtROM Version 2.25.11.102
I get this problem with my 2GB Sandisk as well.
It's starting to look like a brand issue isn't it?
I'm not sure about brand, i've looked around and this happens for every brand.
my Rom is a Tmo 2.17
and im usig a 8125 with tmo-rom
i think this is a hardware issue.
I have the same issue. Brand new MDA Vario and cheap 2GB card.
It usually works if I stick the card in the PC card reader then back in the Vario again, but I shouldn't really have to keep doing that.
I'm not sure what the deal is with these MiniSD's, but maybe they're just not ready for prime time. I recently purchased two 2gb Kingstons and one was bad, not being recognized by two computers, two card readers, nor the MDA. The second was received and ditto, same problem. Keep in mind that the first card was okay and has worked without issues.
I then called Newegg, attentive as always, and they agreed to refund the Kingston and take my order for a Transcend, which was $15 cheaper anyway. The Transcend worked fine.
This trouble is odd because Kingston is a major supplier of memory modules, and I've installed their RAM in a number of computers, including this one, with no problems. I'm obviously not the only one who's experienced problems with these tiny MiniSD's, and I suspect maybe they've overdone the size-reduction trend to a point where reliability is jeoporized. Or, perhaps it is just the 2gb modules. I have two Ridata 1gb MiniSD's, the first I bought for the MDA, and they have performed flawlessly.
My 1GB sandisk works 100% fine never fails at all until i remove it.
I then have to insert it 5-10 times to get it recognised again by the wizard.
I'm having a somewhat similar problem
I use my XDAII mini as an ebook reader on the train, which is fantastic, but storing the ebooks on the storage card is all but useless. I'll get x number of pages into the book, then Microsoft reader will tell me that the book is no longer readable. I can still access the storage card fine, but the only way to continue reading the ebook is to move the ebook file from the storage card to the main memory, which sucks.
Anyone else have similar problems, or know a solution?
Cheers
Chris.

2Gb Dane-Elec Memory card hangs

Hi, I'm having problems with the 2Gb Dane-Elec mini SD card in the Trinity (original; did not flash it or something...)
The card just cannot be accessed after a while, or after I run a program off it. For example: I have TomTom Navigator maps stored on it. When I run TomTom, All works fine, but when I close TomTom, the card cannot be accessed anymore. In the explorer, the folder list is all garbled and shows strange symbols. When I remove the card and re-insert it, all works ok again. So, after I do something with the card, I have to remove it and re-insert it in order to get it working again.
When I then re-insert the card, it shows up in the Explorer with the name "StorageCard2", because apparently when the card cannot be found, a folder called "StorageCard" is created on the device.
I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by the storagecard being faulty, or perhaps an error / incompatibility in the device.
Any ideas? many thanks in advance!

It seems that the Trinity has this problem with some memory brands more than others. I have a 2GB sandisk and I don't have this problem. Another possibility is that problems lie in how the memory card is used: I use the card only to store music and other documents, but I don't have programs installed in the card.... maybe that's the reason why I am spared this problem?
I'm having the same issues with a TakeMS 2GB mini sd card. I've tried different formats (FAT16, FAT32) with no success. I sent an email to HTC and they told me they didn't know of any incompatibility problems with mini SDs.
same here in greece with mini sd 2gp sandisk and take ms !!! only 1 gb work perfect
Same problem with TakeMS 2Gb miniSD. Works fine on my girlfriend's nokia N80.

You've probably already tried, but formatting the card with XP with a card reader in FAT 32 might help.
Mine is starting to have the same problem too! I have a Kingmax 2gb minid-sd card. However. I didn't see any problems like this until a few days after I flashed to the new gps rom. A soft reset will bring everything back for me.
My SanDisk UltraII 2Gb works perfectly so far, both in FAT32 as in good ol' FAT format.
I don't think this is a card compatibility problem, more likely a bug in the OS somewhere or a conflict with some program. I have an SanDisk UltraII card like oVan (don't smile too long oVan ). Everything was fine for two weeks and then I experienced the problem, only the card got corrupted. I did a hardboot and reinstall and it seems to be fine for now.
It did happen after I did a restore created by SPB Backup (latest version). I noticed after the restore some things weren't as they should be. Not sure if it caused the problem or if it was just coincidence.
I think it would be helpful in figuring this out if people posted their Rom versions in case it is a bug in one of the roms, no?
Mine is
Rom: 1.15.405.5 10/23/06
Radio: 1.20.00.11
ExtRom: 1.15.405.101

Garsp...
'hope this is only a coincidence
Same problem here... and i am using a 2gb sandisk minisd card... occasionally I won't be able to see my files... and it will sometime give me weired characters when i open in the explorer... a soft-reset will bring it back to life again, but this is very annoying.... I was thinking that there is a problem with the card or with the brand and was thinking about buying a new card.... but now after reading this thread it looks more like a problem with the device itself

I remember the Magician had a similar problem with the SD card until finally a ROM upgrade became available that would fix the problem.
Early adopters have all the fun
Same with Kingston 2GB
Same here with the Kingston 2GB card. Happened to me both before and after the ROM upgrade. A soft-reset (or ejecting/reinserting the card) fixes it, but it's quite annoying!
Lee
I have the same problem with 2 GB Kingston MiniSD.
But I also have a 512 MB MiniSD with this feature.
I sent an email to HTC pointing to this thread and received the following reply:

Great. I hope we hear back soon. I'm using Kingmax 2gb sd and it seems to only happen after I upgraded the ROM. I used it for 3 weeks without a hitch before that.

Can't wait to see what they do with the info...
I have some new information regarding this issue.
I formatted my Kingston MiniSD with another PC and so far so good.
When I used the phone or my home desktop to format I keep getting this problem 4-5 times / day.
But 2 days ago I reformatted my MiniSD with a laptop and since then everything OK.
Maybe you can try the same (try to format another memory reader) and we will see if it helps.
I've tried to reformat the card with a laptop, with a desktop pc (both with card readers) and in the device using storage tools with no success. The symptoms are similar to the ones reported by sdhc card owners. Does anyone made any progress with this?
I had an Apacer 2GB card and I had the same problems. I also first thought it was the card but now... Actually I'm afraid of buying a new card because I alread lost some great pictures/videos.

Qtek terribly slow....

Al of a sudden my qtek is slow as hell. I had PDA Viet 4003 on it, I don't have any extra app installed and the phone is basically used for tasks, appointments, contacts, listen to music on my 4gb SD card, and a solitaire game here and there. I "formated" it and installed smart1.3 again (the one I had before) and nothing seems to speed the thing up. It is slow, slow slow. Even the wm5 novendor id was slow when I was switching. And bluetooth activesync went berserk too. How come? Anyone has any advice?
help....
Maybe is your SD. If it´s not an original one, it could be that is slowering your S200.
I have experienced that with a "false" SD, my apps were slowering a lot my PPC, as it was accessing the SD to read data, but the SD was not quick enough
Sorry about my english...
It could well be the SD Card. my vendor adviced me against a 4 Gb for the prophet for the same reason and suggested a 2 Gb instead.
Pull it out and give it a try.
Ok guys I really need your help because I am running out of options. I removed the SD card, tried without it and there's no way. The only way it seem to work is by using WM5.
Am I the only one here with that problem? I flashed (almost) every one of the available ROMs with the same results: S L O W !
What could have happened? Do I have to do to use my qt s200 with a wm6 rom? Or should I just pipe down, let it go and just use WM5?
Help!

SD card corruption-Any official solution nowadays?

Hi,
I've read some posts regarding this issue but I was unable to find if there's already a definite solution to the memory card corruption on P3600.
Can anyone update me about that, please?
I have a 2 GB A-Data Super 80X mini SD that worked fine for 2 years since I bought this HTC. 2 months ago I sent it to warranty for exchange of the peeling covers and they also updated the WM5 ROM. After that I took some photos and used the card on the PC to save a few Tom-Tom updates and 2 weeks later Tom-Tom complained that it couldn’t find any voices. When I opened File Explorer there it was, the funny characters replaced a few folders. Before that I was using the first Portuguese official ROM that activated the GPS.
Tips and tricks I've already found around here:
To workaround the problem you can set the device to turn itself off after 1 minute in the power options, then let the device turn itself off instead of pressing the power button.
Install WM6 - Is this confirmed to solve the problem?
Memory performance tweaks-File system cache is too big, there could be some problems with your storage card, so decrease your file system cache - Is this confirmed to solve the problem forever?
As long as I copy files to/from the card using an external card reader (and not via active sync), I have no problems. - It is slower but if this works I can live with it.
Soft-reset - This didn't work for me.

Thats the one thing i hate about my trinity. I haven't got a card reader, so everything gets sent via activesync. Unfortunately anything above 15mb just crashes the card and i have to soft reset and hopefully delete the files on there.
The only solution i have found that (sometimes) works is transfering over wi-fi.
I have got a corruption problem as well. I installed a game that failed but after soft resetting i was left with files i couldn't delete, but i dont want to format yet as tomtom and other larger files can be tedious transfering over wifi.
I would like to know if there is a way to get rid of this without formatting, and why activesync crashes at 15mb
After installing a WM6.5 ROM and formating the card this problem never appeared again. The 2gb mini SD card is working as it should work without any extra tweaks or drivers.
But now I have a spare micro SDHC of 4gb and will buy a mini sd adapter to upgrade my 2gb card on trinity. I'll post my experience with the 4gb card after testing it exaustively.
For people that are having issues with the SD card on WM5, maybe its a good idea to try some alternate drivers like these:
