WM5 Memory Question - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi there, a rant a question, but i will try and keep it brief,
First me rant, why oh why when an ipod can carry 40gig of data in its tiny little space, have HTC not taken the concept behind their Hard Drive systems, I would NOT complain for a second if my pda got half a cm or a cm thicker but gained a gig memory, or more,
And question, I use a Hymalaya, (m1000) i have been interested in the Universal and the WM5 upgrade, My sister has just got one and i have had an explore of hers, whats with the 44meg for programs, i struggle with the xda getting over clogged, is this a problem for the Universal, i can only see that iam going to be more limited to what i can install on the Universal than iam on the hymalaya, this has stopped me upgrading,
Looking to confirm if iam right or seriously needing to revise more.
Thanks Guys, sorry the brief idea went,

OK, for a start, an Ipod uses a mini harddrive, which would NOT be suitable for a PPC (in my opinion, its not suitable for a music player) as they are so fragile. Also, a hard drive chews power, alot more than flash memory.
The approach adopted with most PPCs is to use an exteral storage card, which you install your programs onto.
WM5 uses a different method of storing data to previous versions. It uses RAM to run programs, and it uses ROM for persistent storage (e.g. installed programs).
My advice, get yourself a 1gb sd card (~£42) and install your programs onto that.

I have got a 1gig SD in my M1000, but have refused to install programs to the sd card because of crashing it its removed, (sdio wifi card in use as well) and the time factor for the device to have to access the sd card for system files,
take it this is the way forward for the wm5 devices
Yeah have to agree with you on the ipod thing, like i say, was just a rant, coincidentially, less than 10 minutes after a hard reset cos it all got a bit much for it,
Think iam going to try installing to the mmc card and see how stable it is,
Thanks heliosfa

SD Card will not reformat

Firstly I should say Hi now I have finally registered here after lurking for a while
Please excuse me if you have seen this posted on another site too, I really need help with this
When I put my SD card into my card reader or laptop (I have tried it on both), I get the message "The Disc in drive E: is not formatted, would you like to format it now?" So I press yes and it says... "The Disc in Drive E: Cannot be formatted".
Any ideas?
This is so frustrating, I know I can install things through activesync but I am trying to put TomTom back on which I need to do via the card reader. (BTW, I would never have got TomTom installed the first time around if it wasnt for this site )
Please help.
Are you using a fairly recent USB2 card reader or one you've had for a while. If its not a new one then you're probably going to have problems with a 2G sd card.
I bought it off ebay about a month ago. so it should be fairly modern, it doesnt work in the slot in my laptop either. I know that 2 gig cards are ok on the laptop as I use the camera SD with it no problems.
I have used SK Tools to reformat it, having done this I lost all my programs on the phone so I had to hard reset. After this I can open up the stoarge card on the laptop but when I try to copy my Tomtom over it comes up with a 'write-protection' error, no problems moving cab files over and installing via activesync. Although I cant install TomTom this way because of the file conversion.
Im wondering now if maybe the SK tools format did the job and maybe my problem lays with Tomtom, it worked before though so I just dont understand it.
Thanks for your reply. I shall have to try that program.

I had some problems with a 4gig sd card showing as write protected like yours.
I solved it by putting a folded piece of the thin backing film from a screen protector on top of the sd card when I put it in the reader.
The write protection is a small contact inside the reader and it just needed this extra packing to put a bit of pressure on the contact to make a connection.
after doing that for a week it now does not need the film so I assume that the contacts inside the reader were either a bit dirty or had some sort of coating that has now worn off.
Worth a try ??
Thanks, I really dont think its the card reader though as it doesnt work on my laptops SD slot either, and when I try to take the files for Tomtom over via Activesync it does the same thing. Installing Cab files is fine though. Im starting to think its a TomTom problem, which is odd as it worked before on my old card, both Sandisk Ultra II.

From a Wizar user, is the Herald a worth update?

My Wizard has served me well, but it's beginning to freeze or crash too often when working. Last week I did a hard-reset, but it didn't help much. So I'm looking for an alternative device and the Herald is the natural succesor.
I'm looking for opinions. My top priority at this point is stability; I'm also considering the Hermes, but not having AKU 3 is a disadvantage. I want to run TextMaker or PlanMaker (SoftMaker Office 2006), QMail, and a few more apps like Resco 2005 and Pocket Weather, nothing too complicated. But I don't want to loose time because my Wizard freezed when I needed to access one document, or when connecting with Terminal Server.
Are you happy with your Herald? Do you recommend it for a Wizard user considering that it's almost the same PocketPC with a newer AKU and slimmer form factor? Thanks
Yes, it is. The device is much better built overall, and works faster.
yes, i've upgraded and its much better
I've just bought a Herald today to replace my Wizard, and so far it's looking very good
Thanks for the feedback . I'll probably get one this week. In fact some time ago I purchased a MicroSD for my Wizard in preparation for future upgrades (with a MicroSD to MiniSD adaptor, of course).
microSD to miniSD adaptor? I've never heard about such a thing. Are you sure?
Yup, I'm using a Micro SD in my Wizard with this adapter. I wanted to make sure that I don't have to change the memory card, regardless of what device I could get in the future. And I also have a Micro SD to Memory Stick Duo to use another Micro SD on the PSP. I hate having docens of incompatible memory cards .
BTW, I'm running Faria's AKU 3.3 ROM on my Wizard, so right now I'm not going to replace it. And since WM 6 is just around the corner, it's better for me to wait a bit. If the Herald gets the WM 6 upgrade and the Wizard doesn't, then I will get one.
Two weeks and my wizard will be replaced by a XDA terra (Herald) with WM6 installed. We´ll see what is better.
In two weeks this XDA Terra is going to be released with WM 6? Then it will be the first device being sold with WM 6.
I think I'm going to (patiently) wait for the Toshiba G900. It has a lot more punch .

Qtek terribly slow....

Al of a sudden my qtek is slow as hell. I had PDA Viet 4003 on it, I don't have any extra app installed and the phone is basically used for tasks, appointments, contacts, listen to music on my 4gb SD card, and a solitaire game here and there. I "formated" it and installed smart1.3 again (the one I had before) and nothing seems to speed the thing up. It is slow, slow slow. Even the wm5 novendor id was slow when I was switching. And bluetooth activesync went berserk too. How come? Anyone has any advice?
help....
Maybe is your SD. If it´s not an original one, it could be that is slowering your S200.
I have experienced that with a "false" SD, my apps were slowering a lot my PPC, as it was accessing the SD to read data, but the SD was not quick enough
Sorry about my english...
It could well be the SD Card. my vendor adviced me against a 4 Gb for the prophet for the same reason and suggested a 2 Gb instead.
Pull it out and give it a try.
Ok guys I really need your help because I am running out of options. I removed the SD card, tried without it and there's no way. The only way it seem to work is by using WM5.
Am I the only one here with that problem? I flashed (almost) every one of the available ROMs with the same results: S L O W !
What could have happened? Do I have to do to use my qt s200 with a wm6 rom? Or should I just pipe down, let it go and just use WM5?
Help!

Idea for ram increasing, posible or not posible?

dunno if this has been discussed here cause i havent seen anything about it. it is know that vista has a program called ReadyBoost, which integrates usb removable storage to the ram and i was wondering seen as it was ported to XP could it be done for windows mobile? using the storage card of course. sorry if this topic was dismissed already, i couldnt find anything related.
Smart thought acctually
But i doub't it
storage card is much slower than onboard ram therefore the idea is pretty weak.
I'm not sure it it would be of much use, since SD cards are extremely slow compared to ram memory.
Since data that needs to be accessed fast and frequently usually gets stored in ram, attempting to use falsh card as RAM would cause extreme slowdown of your device.
Also, the readyBoost doesn't integrate into RAM, but serves more as something like extended disk cache - some frequently accessed files can be stored in flash memory (faster then HDD and less power-consuming), so there are less random reads of HDD needed, resulting in better performance, and increased battery life on laptops.
For pocket PC's doing it the other way around (ramdisk - using part of RAM as emulated storage card) makes a bit more sense an is quite useful on devices with much RAM - for example keeping web browser's temporary files in ramdisk can boost its performance a lot.
i knew it is slower but i had the doubt these days and i wanted to ask. i read about the hardware way that works on some PPCs but i dont want to mess with mine like that.
mr_deimos another way could be using storage memory for it, it wont be as slow as storage card but it could work, the way windows use it, using HDD storage as temp. newer ppcs have a lot of memory, 32mbs of extra ram will be really usefull. i hope u get the idea.
While ReadyBoost is pretty much useless with today's RAM setups and the XP port is pretty much worthless for the same reason, it actually could make some sense under Windows Mobile. Even some of the newer devices come out with a measly 64MB of RAM that probably could profit from some extra (even slow) memory. SD card File transfer rates may be beyond good and evil on a mobile, but access times are actually very good and that is exactly what ReadyBoost uses to begin with. Focusing on the currently active program in favor of some swapped background applications could save the day every now and then. Think about it the next time Navigon and Opera crap out on you because you don't have enough free memory :>
I know that the storage Ram is different than the Memory Ram, however a ramdisk using the extra storage ram would be nice.
I've asked this question before and have yet to ever find a solution.

BT flash card reader (portable)?

Hello!
I've been searching for a (preferably portable) bluetooth flash card reader, so it can be used to read/write files without opening the case of the f-ing phone (yes, I'm very pissed at the phone designer, who made flash card slot in Fuze under the damn lid, which hard to open with a chance find the battery on the floor = the dumbest thing I've ever seen)
Changing cards in the phone is only one of the problems, another problem is that I install most of the programs on flash card, and it might freeze the phone when it's changed.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
Hi there,
Depending on the ROM you have, the bluetooth file explorer works exactly as you want. You can send / receive files over bluetooth from your laptop. I will warn you however, that this is an extremely slow process when working with files especially over the 10mb mark. If taking the chip out is the main concern, I advise you to get the USB cable and put the phone into Disk Drive mode. That mode is not quite as fast as taking the chip out and using it in a card reader, but it is still MUCH faster than bluetooth.
Feel free to PM me if you need help or further explanations
Thank you for the reply.
By portable I ment something much much smaller and much cheaper then a laptop...
Since designer of the photo camera I'm using was much smarter then HTC designer, the flash card can be easily be removed from it, and that where the files I need to transfer are from.
I've seen so many portable BT gps loggers, that look like a little box with a usb dongle sticked in (the box is battery), why not make something similar, but instead of GPS add flash card reader bult-in the dongle?
I mean it makes so much sense, but I failed to find anything even remotely close to this...
I still have my previous phone 8525, with a flash card slot outside, perhaps I could use that phone for now...as soon as I can figure out how to set up the bt link between the phones...probably will need update the rom on 8525..
