From a Wizar user, is the Herald a worth update? - Wing, P4350 General

My Wizard has served me well, but it's beginning to freeze or crash too often when working. Last week I did a hard-reset, but it didn't help much. So I'm looking for an alternative device and the Herald is the natural succesor.
I'm looking for opinions. My top priority at this point is stability; I'm also considering the Hermes, but not having AKU 3 is a disadvantage. I want to run TextMaker or PlanMaker (SoftMaker Office 2006), QMail, and a few more apps like Resco 2005 and Pocket Weather, nothing too complicated. But I don't want to loose time because my Wizard freezed when I needed to access one document, or when connecting with Terminal Server.
Are you happy with your Herald? Do you recommend it for a Wizard user considering that it's almost the same PocketPC with a newer AKU and slimmer form factor? Thanks

Yes, it is. The device is much better built overall, and works faster.

yes, i've upgraded and its much better

I've just bought a Herald today to replace my Wizard, and so far it's looking very good

Thanks for the feedback . I'll probably get one this week. In fact some time ago I purchased a MicroSD for my Wizard in preparation for future upgrades (with a MicroSD to MiniSD adaptor, of course).

microSD to miniSD adaptor? I've never heard about such a thing. Are you sure?

Yup, I'm using a Micro SD in my Wizard with this adapter. I wanted to make sure that I don't have to change the memory card, regardless of what device I could get in the future. And I also have a Micro SD to Memory Stick Duo to use another Micro SD on the PSP. I hate having docens of incompatible memory cards .
BTW, I'm running Faria's AKU 3.3 ROM on my Wizard, so right now I'm not going to replace it. And since WM 6 is just around the corner, it's better for me to wait a bit. If the Herald gets the WM 6 upgrade and the Wizard doesn't, then I will get one.

Two weeks and my wizard will be replaced by a XDA terra (Herald) with WM6 installed. We´ll see what is better.

In two weeks this XDA Terra is going to be released with WM 6? Then it will be the first device being sold with WM 6.
I think I'm going to (patiently) wait for the Toshiba G900. It has a lot more punch .

Backpack Problems

Nothing new here, but i am having problems with my Backpack and would like to find out from other backpack users if they are having problems. in order to be able to evalute the problems and possibly approach o2 could you please say where and when purchased, nature of problem, has this problem been from day 1 or did it develop.
thank you in advance, but i'm tearing my hair out here and i'd like to know the experiences of others before i go to o2 with what they may consider is a unique problem.

I have the backpack, bought it in may04. Don't use it much except maybe on holiday.
What problem are you having ?
Bought mine from O2 at same time as Xda II, works a treat although not used the CF slot must, mainly used with LCD projector for powerpoint.
Control 2 x XdaII & backpacks at work and haven't seen any problems.
If you post the exact problem I'll see if I can replicate it.
Bought mine from a PDA store in Kuala Lumpur about 4 months ago.
So far have experienced no problems.. Use the CF slot for memory cards and a Dell WiFi card. Use the video output with my Epson LCD projector.

backpack
My problem is i cannot get system to recognise any compact flash card i insert. first card i bought was fuji - i inserted the cf card and the system requested drivers! then i tried a bytestor same problem. i invested in a card reader and formatted the cards still the same problem. on one of the forums here i spotted a download 'bpinsert' i tried that and altho' it is a shortcut to a non-existent program the fuji card was recognised for a short while and i seemed to be able to access it, then the system froze and after a soft reset the problem started again. i have the part number, serial number and model number and am about to approach htc to see if i have a good product, if not i'll have to buy a new digital camera to use the 256mb flash cards and i'll sell the backpack on e-bay to some schmuck. (joking). the thing that is making my tear my hair out is i bought an sdio gps unit, as i was going to lose storage space i bought a backpack, now i find the sdio unit will not work without an update with autoroute 2004 and altho' the back pack does work with presentations - about three per year - i can't use the storage facility. oh well one lives and learns. still i could save some money on a new camera i know this guy............................
BackPack Problem
Hi,
I got my BackPack about 3 months ago, the reason I bought it was to do my powerpoint presentations using my Imate (xdaII). But the problem I found is that the Imate gets too slow. Have you also experienced the same problem?
Regarding the CF Card, it works fine, reading and writting, note that I heard 1st set of backpack manufactured early this year can not write to BackPacks!
One more problem, if you use XCPUScalar Softwar (to speed-up your PDA to 530 Mhz) then it can not recongnize the CF Card in the BackPack, you can not read or write either (acutally as if it does not exist). I guess this is due to the Speeding up software. If I enable it, then CF card is available and the Imate can recognize it.
Unkown card error
ianlake-
I've got the same problem - you're not alone. I am trying to use a 1 gig IBM microdrive and a 128MB noname card. Both, from time to time, ask for drivers for the "unknown card". What's worse is the error is sporadic and I can't rely on using the storage for anything important on the go. My desktop has a built-in reader (in which both cards work fine) and one of the main reasons I bought the backpack was to transfer files quickly from desktop to CF to I-mate. I haven't been able to find any tips in my searches but please keep me informed of any progress you've made.

This is certainly the answer to my problem, uninstalled XCPU Scalar and things are all OK, including some things that i hadn't really noticed.
I think i should contact XCPU Scalar and report the problem.
Thank you GoldenSands.

Most welcome "ianlake".. but does your Imate go very slow when you connect it to the projector and run a presentation? Even if it is connected to the monitor!
from what i've been able to read then when one display using the backpack the fps is limited to 1-2
which could cause it to seem pretty slow

Sorry, but what is "fps"??
The only reason I bought the BackPack is to run the presentations through my Imate, and I was unable to do so; due to the very low speed I get when it is connected to the projector. Actually it gets slow once I run IA Screen Mirror.
I got IA Screen Mirror Ver 2.01 (Build 15055)
Is any one aware about a newer version? and from where can we download it?
fps == frames pr second
as in how many pictures you get every second

yes, horribly slow, but by the time i get round to doing my presentations at the end of a boring lesson my students have gone to sleep - so no-one notices.

Спасибо !!!
I use my backpack with a compact flash modem and I did'n face any problem with it. But after purchasing a sandisk connect plus, WiFi+128 MB card, the device is getting very very slow plus it is only recognizing the memory part and not the WiFi part.
Originally I wanted to use my i-mate with WiFi but nochances.
I even formated my device several times but the original driver is nor working.
Also after contacting sandisk directly I got no help!!!!!!
RE
FI, no overclocking programs like XCPUSCALAR etc work with backpack. The files in the CF card will not be recognized if overclocking progam is installed especially if you set the speed above the default speed setting. Also, GPS performance is erratic.
I've changed my backpace twice. Firstly, it was a faulty backpack that could not recognised my CF card after a few weeks of usage. The 2nd time was the backpack battery konks out after about a year of usage. Could be due to end-of-life of backpack battery. All were changed within the warranty period of the backpack.

WM5 Memory Question

Hi there, a rant a question, but i will try and keep it brief,
First me rant, why oh why when an ipod can carry 40gig of data in its tiny little space, have HTC not taken the concept behind their Hard Drive systems, I would NOT complain for a second if my pda got half a cm or a cm thicker but gained a gig memory, or more,
And question, I use a Hymalaya, (m1000) i have been interested in the Universal and the WM5 upgrade, My sister has just got one and i have had an explore of hers, whats with the 44meg for programs, i struggle with the xda getting over clogged, is this a problem for the Universal, i can only see that iam going to be more limited to what i can install on the Universal than iam on the hymalaya, this has stopped me upgrading,
Looking to confirm if iam right or seriously needing to revise more.
Thanks Guys, sorry the brief idea went,
OK, for a start, an Ipod uses a mini harddrive, which would NOT be suitable for a PPC (in my opinion, its not suitable for a music player) as they are so fragile. Also, a hard drive chews power, alot more than flash memory.
The approach adopted with most PPCs is to use an exteral storage card, which you install your programs onto.
WM5 uses a different method of storing data to previous versions. It uses RAM to run programs, and it uses ROM for persistent storage (e.g. installed programs).
My advice, get yourself a 1gb sd card (~£42) and install your programs onto that.
I have got a 1gig SD in my M1000, but have refused to install programs to the sd card because of crashing it its removed, (sdio wifi card in use as well) and the time factor for the device to have to access the sd card for system files,
take it this is the way forward for the wm5 devices
Yeah have to agree with you on the ipod thing, like i say, was just a rant, coincidentially, less than 10 minutes after a hard reset cos it all got a bit much for it,
Think iam going to try installing to the mmc card and see how stable it is,
Thanks heliosfa

sdhc

I have a question.. I'm going to buy a qtek s200. Will that mean that it will be a G4, and will it be able to use sdhc cards now that it looks like wm6 supports them? .. One last question.. what is the memory limit for the qtek s200 as I need to buy a card with it. Thanks to whoever takes the time to reply to this.
A) Depends on the stock at the place you are buying it. You would have to check devices IPL and SPL version (displayed on boot) to find out. If it has 001 at the end then it is G4.
Question is why do you want G4? It seems that for now G3 is easier to handle as far as unlocking and changing ROM is concerned.
B) No. At the moment there is no proper 'WM6' ROM for this device and even when they cook one, there is no guarantee they will be able to port the SD driver.
C) I read reports by many users (just search this forum) who use 4GB SD with no problem. I my self use 2GB with no problem. One thing to watch out for is the fact that many 4GB cards manufactured today are SDHC so they won't work.
Now I have 4 gb Transcend SD 150x and it works perfectly

ph gosh, i've been trying for a year almost. i've been trying with tomtom 6, i downloaded like 6 different ones all from different sites. I then had the thought 'maybe tomtom 6 uses more memory than tomtom 5' so i downloaded many versions of tomtom 5 too, but same result, Then i was borrowing my mates tomtom 910, i got the smart idea of copying his memory card, put it directly into my xda IIi and it worked BUT same way as all the others, crashes back to the today screen. somtimes with the error message 'data type misalignment' or 'memory access violation'
Last night i finally found out how to 'cook' roms, so i downloaded a custom rom, with all the o2 stuff stripped out, and the camera fixes with new bluetooth and radio versions.
result - same.
then i worked out how to remove the clearvue suit completley, myself!
and the outcome - same!!!! it still crashes back just like first time.
i think there is one last thing to try, to get a faster sd card, ive been using a 1GB Kingston SD, 2GB Sandisk Mini SD with adapter, 1 GB sandisk MiniSD with adapter, 512MB Sandisk transfalash with adapter, i've heard, well read, that transcend 80x cards do the magic, as it can read and write information much faster, therefore using less system memory/ram. im going to buy a 2GB transcend 150x from the shop on friday and this will be my final attempt. if it happens again, then im gona throw this junk out of my window, run outside, then run it over, reverse, and run it over again....
sorry, its just i spent too much time on this thing to work.
im getting the feeling that its the xda IIi that is faulty? as tomtom worked perfectly on my nokia n80 which i replaced with this xda so i can get touch screen!
hope you have fun, i have only ever had one version of both 5-6 they both run perfectly from a cheapo 512mb card and a cheap 2gb kingston card the cards i have are nothing special. think the 2gb was £12.99 from play.com
you using original versions or *coughcrackcedcough*,you are installing them correctly by replacing the files and suck, also you are using the correct maps for the version?.
i am runing sbp pocket plus and clock at the same time, no probs on my xda2i or my dads xda2.

How or what did you do too remove the clearvue files??
By deleting clearvue from a custom rom & then cook the rom back I guess?

8525 hardware failure?

I purchased an AT&T 8525 on Ebay a week ago and have been trying to get it working correctly. After spending a few days at work browsing the forums and wiki, I am still having a couple problems to which I am hoping someone can make a suggestion or two:
1) the microSD card is only sporadically working (pqi 2gb)
2) the USB connection to the PC is coming up as a malfunctioning device 90% of the time (disconnecting and reconnecting a few times and it will connect)
I can live without the USB connection, but I need the SD card
The phone came with a vanilla WM6 and SPL-1.40.Olipro.
I have tried the following:
tested for bad blocks with mtty (no problems)
performed a hard reset with mtty
switched ROMs to Schaps WM6 4.31 lite
banged my head against the wall
none of these have seemed to help. I thought the head banging did for awhile, but then my vision cleared.
radio : 1.54.07.00 if anyone thinks that will matter.
Thanks in advance.
Oh, and I have tried reformatting the card. I have also tried a kingston 2gb microSD. The Kingston I tried with both FAT and FAT32 formatting.
Thanks again
1st thing, upgrade your SPL to HARD SPL ver.7 found in the upgrading section. This is a must. Better than the 1.40 SPL. Old version made by olipro, upgrade to 2.10.
2nd, try changing your os. There are plenty to try out. It may be that your os doesnt support your card(?)...
3rd, some sd cards dont't seem to be liked by the hermes......Try another that is recommended ...
Hope this helps... Cheers...
Thanks for the quick reply ultramag.
I forgot to mention in my first post that I had upgraded to HardSPL7. I plan on downgrading to the shipped WM5 to test the different OS once the wiki is back up. I assume that is what you mean by trying a new OS?
At any rate, just letting you know I hadn't disappeared.
If its Hard SPLed then why not try a cooked rom. I can pretty much guarantee that it will run better without the bloat on the stock rom. Also stock roms upgrade everything(this includes the radio) and considering you might not want to do that most, if not all, cooked roms are os only. This means it gives you the flexibility to change your radio if you want or keep what you have. wm6 is better all round than wm5. It has microSDHC support (that means you can use bigger than 2gb card) which wm5 doesn't. Personally I left the stock roms behind ages ago cos the chefs out there are top notch and do a better job of getting your os to REALLY run well.Try wm6 first if you do decide to run a cooked rom as there have been issues with wm6.1, though I do like the PDAViet roms for stability and speed(notably PDAViet wm6.1 build 19900).
Just remember though to read a bit about the rom and see if it does and has what you want. There is no perfect rom and flashing does get addictive....
Cheers....
Update:
I was going to run the latest PDAviet a few days ago, but the file I DLed was corrupted, so I went with the Faria 6.1. It's wicked fast, I'm glad I did.
Unfortunately, I am still having problems with my SD card, even after buying a new one (sandisk 1gb; tiawan, which I guess is not so hot for the 8525).
I have been keeping track of when it work/doesn't work, and maybe this will help diagnose the problem.
Occasionally the SD card will connect (usually after I have shut it off for 2 hours). When it does, it runs fine if all I play on it are mp3s. I have done this for a few hours.
It seems that when I run another program, or reset the device, the card will often disconnect. This still occurs when I have everything shut off (phone, wifi, bluetooth, beam, activesync).
Since it plays mp3's fine, when I can detect it (with both brands of microSD cards), I am thinking it isn't a hardware problem and more of a software one. I'm going to go buy yet another microSD card and see if this fixes it.
Programs I'm running:
Skype
TomTom6 (have yet to get it to run though, due to the microSD issue)
Apparently I can't search a forum. There's a nice long list for microSD problems and a few fixes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324
So, I'll be busy for a few days trying these out. I'll post back with what I find.
Thanks again for your help Ultramag
