First a hello, since i am new to this forum, but very much impressed with everyones effort to pull as much out of these devices and software as possible.
I have been reading a lot about upgrading, flashing, bricks, problems, etc. This to increase my knowledge of what is and what can be. So, now i am thinking about upgrading my htc 3300 to WM6 and have a few questions i can not really find a direct answer for. I was looking for a all in one post or a recent update guide, but couldn't find one. Perhaps this can help others aswell.
Here we go:
A rom is like an image of the OS with certain applications included. You can flash this to your device overwriting the current OS and all of its applications? Does this mean anything i have installed like TT will be removed and i need to reinstall this?
USPL needs to be run first for all custom roms, but not for official HTC ones, then again it can't hurt to run it anyways? Does it leave any permanent changes?
Running USPL or upgrading to WM6 official or cooked has an effect on warrenty?
Are Custom WM6 roms or Official WM6, the real thing. As in it gives all the new functionality (*ahum*) that WM6 is supposed to or are the custom roms a 'simulation' to the real thing? Even if i read that the official wm6 doesnt have much to offer, will it increase performance or slow down things? Is there some post with all possible roms, custom included, like Mark, Meschle's, HTC, vanilla...
If TT is currently installed (pre installed actually), how can i reinstall this program or any maps if i happen to remove this. Is there a key somewhere i need to write down, can i make a backup copy/image so i can always put it back?
There are probably millions of questions more, but these are the ones going through my mind now. I am just somewhat cautious about changing anything to my new device, yet i really want the WM6 instead of WM5.
I hope some of you are willing to answer my questions or will i get a 'use the search function', cause trust me i have, there is just too much and its too much dispersed (sp?)

yes you need to reinstall all your personal applications, and you will loose all the PIM's data as well

It does not leave any permanent changes, once you upgrade to new ROM it will return your mobile to notmal locked status.

if you have backup program you better backup all the licensed softwares keys, because it will delete all preinstalled software.

hey,
in advance, sorry about that if this is a serious noob question. i searched and i read numerous threads but i'm still really confused.
basically, i'm getting a wizard at christmas, which has WM5 on it. I've had little look around, and the general (and somewhat obvious) concensus is that WM6 (or WWE or whatever) is way better. I'm really confused about the whole G3 G4 thing and the whole updating ROM things. I've read guides/tutorials and looked at a load of the Wiki stuff, but i'm still really confused.
Is it possible that someone might give me a bit of a really broken down idea (not step-by-step tutorial) as to updating the phone from WM5 to WM6. Like what is involved? length of time taken? what essentially i need to do? etc. If people can tell me what to update etc, like the radio thing and such, i'm more than happy to search for the guides and tutorials on this forum. the guides are excellently done and very easy to follow, but i'm still lost about what means what?

Ok, the for idiots version (don't worry, I once needed the for idiots version too)--
G3 Wizard= when you boot the phone and get a bunch of numbers on the initial screen it will say x.xx
G4 Wizard= x.xx.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (joking, but it will have more decimals!)
The radio depends on location...I'm in Cali, I run 2.47 with the fix cab and have no issues...however...2.19 IS the recommended radio for the WM6 roms.
THERE IS NO SINGLE BEST ROM!! They all rock. The kitchen you choose is based on what fits YOU. I run Jaguar, I love it. But I like minimal apps, but not a vanilla rom. Read each kitchen posting carefully. Some come with all kinds of bells and whistles, some are minimal, some are really vanilla! Read what the bugs are, and if fixes have been posted.
Read Dr.P's tutorial at least 3 times on unlocking your Wiz (it is stickied).
You will want a few "must have" apps. Search lokiwiz, wst, and maybe even omap clock. Once CID/SIM unlocked, always unlocked. But before you flash a cooked rom, YOU MUST BE CID/SIM UNLOCKED!
When you flash a rom, you are not freeballing with your jacket open...flashing your rom simply means switching it out. It is recommended to flash back to a stock rom before trying out a new kitchen. This keeps the new install fresh and clean. Search for the stock rom. The search button is your friend. A lot of folks use the Tmo 2.26 stock rom.
And finally, invest in Sprite backup or a similar app. It makes things so much easier if you fubar ****. So always back your Wizard up.
And again, remember, read the wiki's and stickies until your eyes bleed. It is always best to know your device before playing around with it. What mods you do, you do at your own risk!
And an FYI, I don't honestly know if WM6 is better than WM5, but as the WM6's are all custom kitchens, they are a hell of a lot more fun!!
PS- the longest time taken is always in the initial modding. You MUST unlock your phone first...that will take a good 20 minutes at least. A typical rom flash takes roughly 10 minutes. A radio only flash takes 3 minutes...once you have done the initial work...you will find that if you want to change roms, you'll need to devote a whole 20 minutes---flash a stock rom, then flash a custom creation.
is there any way to run a rom on the storage card insted of on the device its self???
or if not what files and folders could i move to my storage card because im haveing a really really bad memory leak. i mean it goes from having like 25mb free all the way down to like 4mb free and it will do that in less then a days time. i dont really know what to do to either stop it or maybe slow it down.

Your problem is the T-Mobile ROM. The carrier ROMs have HUGE memory leaks, that at this time cannot be fixed. I suggest that you upgrade to one of the new WinMo 6 or 6.1 ROMs, they are faster, more compatable, and solve the memory leak problem.

Well, I would go with the latest version of the TNT ROM. Its pretty much considered the best, but if you want some variety in your programs, then go with S.V.I.s HORNET V0.5, as its got the most usefull program set out of all of them.
I can understand your wanting a ROM that doesnt have alot of programs in it, and I am sorry to say that there really isnt one anymore that is really minimal, but the 2 that I just told you about are still quite fast and stable with the programs that they inlcude, and they dont have any kind of crapware like the T-Mobile and other carrier ROMs have.
After you download a ROM, use the Wizard Service Tool to find out if you have a G3 or G4 Wizard, then read the appropriate guide to see how to flash it, or ask back here for more info. Happy flashing!
I read that the best way to get a base rom is to cook your own using FARIA but i have never tried cooking a rom before so idk if it would be a good idea for me or not i mean i got my wizard for free but i really dont feel like bricking it because i didnt do something right...

Meh, cooking isnt that hard, but if you plan on making your own, start with a newer kitchen as the Faria one is 2-3 years old now. Just read the instructions with whatever kitchen you use, and FOLLOW THEM TO A "T", if something is not matching the instructions STOP, and you should be fine.

Hi sorry to start a new thread but i had to be direct with my question to get a direct answer.....
I have the HTC HD2 from Virgin right from when it was first launched.
There have been, and apprarently will not be, any Virgin Rom upgrades.
02 Vodafone and Tmobile are all getting updated.
I read somewhere about "flashing" my mobile (please if someone can tell me what that is and how to do it i'd be greatful)
and then installing the latest Rom Upgrade from a different network...
Will i get any problems with network coverage, or abiltiy to use my phone as a phone If i upgrade to the (say) 02 Rom but am still using my Virgin Network?
Any help or clarity would be most welcome!

if your going to upgrade the ROm i would suggest a wwe english ROM so no branding or anything like that or a custom ROM really loads better, im on Virgin also i been custom ROM since the day i got it

don't bother installing an O2 ROM on your phone - there are better offerings here.
have a browse through the ROMs on offer, I'd suggest picking one which has been developed over a long time (you can tell by the number of replies shown on the right hand side), so for example Artemis or Energy ROMs.
often they'll have different "flavours" of ROM available ... these may not include the standard HTC Sense interface, so take care to pick one that matches your requirements.
you may need to upgrade your radio, but this is almost always explained in the first few posts of the ROM thread, and there are normally links to get the radio upgrade if needed.
one thing - in order to flash a new rom, the only skill you really need is the ability to read instructions and follow them carefully. generally things go wrong when people don't do that.
one final thing - on my previous phones, I noticed a clearer benefit to flashing a slimmed-down custom ROM, as the phone was less powerful and was slowed down by all the crap that the network puts on there. the HD2 is a pretty fast phone, and hence the benefits (imo) are less pronounced. for me, the more significant improvements have been through using things like Cookie's Home Tab (see here and here), which can be installed on any ROM.

PS - you asked what "flashing" is - that is the procedure for putting a new ROM on the phone. In my fairly non-tech head, it equates to putting a new version of Windows on your PC. in doing so, you will almost certainly invalidate your warranty, (however, there are procedures for putting your phone back to it's stock state, which are explained here on xda).
Hi, I recently bought a T-mobile HD2, the unit isn't unlocked yet but I plan to unlock it and use it with AT&T, anyways I'm interested in running Android on the device. Would updating the HD2 from the HTC website which I believe is the official update website prohibit me in anyway from locking out Android or do anything negative in terms of customization of the HD2 unit?
I am running the updated rom 2.13 I am on t-mobile though and I am able to use android all day but once I restart it reverts back to WM. So I am not sure if this helps you...I was able to get everything running but the calls sounded robotic. I read I needed to flash to a new rom.

Well first, if you have the T-Mobile version of the phone, you do NOT want to use an update from the HTC site, that's for the euro version of the phone. The upgraded stock rom that you can use is available on T-Mobile's support page for the HD2.
Now, flashing to the correct updated ROM will not prevent you from doing anything...you'll still be able to unlock it later, you can still run Android, and you can still do any customizations you want. It's just a newer version of the stock ROM that originally came on the phone.

The US HD2 certainly does use radios, it just uses different ones than the euro version...in fact, that's most of the reason the wrong ROM could brick your phone, because of radio incompatibility. As you said, the radios you see referred to here are the firmware packages used to control the hardware radios in the phone (voice, 3G/EDGE, GPS, WiFi, BT). When you flash a different radio, you're applying a different set of settings to the way all that functions.
Also, do you guys recommend flashing a different WM rom or just keep the stock one?

That's generally completely a matter of personal opinion, some people will tell you that using a custom ROM is so critical that if you don't your grandchildren will walk funny, etc....whereas I am doing just fine running the stock ROM and just manually tweaking and hacking it to my liking, part by part. However, if you're going to be running Android on it, there's evidence that having a custom ROM vs the stock will help with some of the known problems with the Android ports that are available.

There's several builds available, and all of the current ones are remarkably stable compared to the first attempts. But, I believe that that there's still not any that are absolutely 100% fully-functional...each has some minor drawback or caveat, like BT or 3G or the camera not working right, but usually that's the only issue(s). Also, it's been a couple of days since I checked on those, so they may have come even farther since then. One common drawback to all of them though is the heaaavvvy battery drain...but this is also being addressed as quickly as possible. And yes, in every build the apps and marketplace seem to be working just as they would on any factory android install.
Lastly, why didn't the developers develop a Android rom that you could flash so you didn't have to reboot into it after every Hard Reset?

Trust me, they are working on that, there's tons of members here drooling and waiting for that exact thing. It requires a completely different method of loading Android into memory, so there's a lot more kinks to work out

Wow, thank you so much sirphunkee, you sir are a scholar with your detailed response. Anyways, I apologize but I am intrigued by your response and more questions evolve. Once my HD2 comes I assume it will have a older ROM version and a official T-Mobile Update will be available for me. Now, I'm just wondering would I need to worry about what radios I need or will that be taken care of for me.

Anyways, sirphunkee, you mention tweaking the stock ROM, would you recommend BSB tweaks or something else because I read about it and users have discovered that they lose some functions after tweaking their phones. Also would I need to install this if I just plan to tweak the original/stock rom?
Furthermore, is Android on the HD2 currently run over/on top of the WM OS so could that be the cause of the heavy battery drain? Also, is the Android OS on the HD2 booted through an exploit in the firmware of the HD2? If so could this be patched? Most of the HD2's built or shipped in the past 2 months have the newer ROM on them, but even if yours doesn't then yes you can just go to the T-Mobile site and get the newer one.
Both of the stock ROM's have the radio(s) included, so you don't have to worry about it if you just stay with one of those ROM's. If you flash a custom ROM it (usually) won't have a radio included, it'll just use whatever radio was already on your phone (i.e. whatever one came with the stock ROM originally). You can flash to different radio versions....ONLY ones that are clearly labeled as being compatible with the US HD2...doesn't matter if you're running a stock or custom ROM, but it does require HSPL first before a radio can be flashed.

The original stock T-Mobile US ROM (yes, the one I'm running currently) is 2.10.531.1 ("2.10" for short), and the newer one that's been released is 2.13...so that pic you linked there just shows the stock upgrade utility about to upgrade a ROM to the new version (with an included radio).
You can tell what ROM/Radio is on your phone by reading the little text that appears on the bottom of the screen during bootup, and you can also access that info through a settings option once the phone is running.
"WWE" = "WorldWide English"....just means that I have an english-based ROM. Other languages are available by applying ROM's specifically built for that language, but I honestly don't even know if any exist for the T-Mobile HD2, I think they're only available for the euro model.
Since it's very easy to flash the upgraded stock ROM, if your phone comes with the older one I would just suggest running that for a few days and see if it gives you any headaches....if so, then just go ahead and flash to the newer one. There's a number of threads in this section that discuss the differences in the stock ROM's, and the advantages/disadvantages of each. Regardless of which stock ROM you have, the process to flash to a custom ROM is the same either way (HSPL, etc).

HSPL is "permanent", in the sense that it remains on your phone until you manually flash a different HSPL (like flashing back to stock SPL should you need to return the phone for warranty reasons). Once you have HSPL (yes, a hard bootloader) on your phone (HSPL3 being the latest/best to use), you can flash all the different custom ROMs or radios that you want, without having to apply HSPL again.

There a bunch of different things you can to to tweak a stock ROM, or to futher tweak a custom one, and BsB is just a nice tight convenient collection of some of the more common ones. I use BsB and don't have any issues related to it, but I also skip a few of the settings in it ("tap time" for example) that have caused issues for other users. Besides BsB, I also use HD2Tweak, JWMD Icon Changer, CHT/CHTE, as well as a whole list of other stand-alone tweaks that come in the form of cab files, or manual registry hacks...some are related to performance or function, while some are strictly visual or style tweaks.

I originially thought the same (that Android ran in parallel with WM and that was causing the batt drain), but from what I read it actually shuts down WM when it runs, so I guess that isn't the cause of the drain...but honestly I haven't been able to keep up with all the finer details of the Android porting that's going on. And yes, a version of Androd that will load straight to NAND at bootup is the final hurdle I was talking about, and that's exactly what a number of dev's are trying very hard to make happen....I suspect that a breakthrough in that is right around the corner, but I'm no dev so take that with a grain of salt!

Thank you again sirphunkee! Anyways I just got my hd2 and for the most part I like it. Though, I have a question, how can I backup my contacts so that after a new rom install I dont need to relink their facebook accounts again? Basically, I don't have the same names for my contacts, I only have first names so I have to redo it manually one by one and I want to use activesync to do it but it's telling me I need Outlook. Why do I need Outlook? Isn't that a stupid outdated email application? Also, how do you remove all the bloatware like blockbuster from the HD2? Is flashing a custom rom the only option?
Also, I noticed a problem that windows marketplace apps seem to not install. I try to install Skyfire and I see the progress bar and it goes to like 3/4 of the way and never goes past that.
An unrelated question I want to install HSPL3 I have a SPL 2.10.000 on my Stock 2.13 T-Mobile I'm wondering since in the instructions it tells me, that:
*YOU CAN NOW CHOOSE WHICH VERSION OF SPL OR HARDSPL YOU WANT TO FLASH TO YOUR PHONE*
*You can only select between SPL2.08.0000 or 2.08.HSPL. This is to avoid people with 1024LEO's installing an incompatable version and bricking their device*
What exactly am I suppose to pick? A SPL or HSPL? I mean I want to run Android but will this HSPL interfere with my stock ROM? Also, can someone give me like specific instructions on what I need to pick in the installer?
anyone have a idea? I'd like to experiment with android but i wanna make sure i have the right settings to i dontt have a brick in my hands after I'm done.

If you're just going to put android on the phone, you don't need to mess with H/SPL at all...you only need that if you're going to flash to a custom winmo ROM before putting Android on there.

I think what that thread is saying is that having a custom ROM is what helps with the stability of Android, not just putting HSPL3 on there (unless that's buried in that thread somewhere that I missed...). But yes, putting a custom ROM on the phone would have the prerequisite of HSPL anyway.
I don't have a custom ROM or even HSPL on my HD2, and I'm currently using the Desire v5 build of Android on here. It seems to run very stable, but I haven't yet gotten a few things working on it (i.e. 3G)...I can't say if a custom ROM would make those things work, but I can say it doesn't ever crash or hang or seem to slow down at all.
I just wanted you to know that HSPL wasn't mandatory for you to be able to try out Android on your phone.
Ok thank you so much sirphunkee again. Anyways, I'm wondering if you know why my weather will not update now when I ask it to on a Wifi connection. I try to update it and just says that its a connection error. And also my windows marketplace app installs seem to stall on the 3/4 complete and they never finish. Could you perhaps help me with that?
Lastly, I was wondering would you be able to tell me if I wanted to put a custom ROM on my HD2 what setting do I need to put on my HD2 for a successful flash?
