Dear All,
Please help, my new O2 EXEC is sitting here almost totally useless without ActiveSync.
I did a very stupid thing:
I plugged in the Exec via the USB cable before installing ActiveSync 4.0.
What used to happen (back inthe day 2001 etc) would be that windows would install its own driver for the portable device and then when you subsequently installed ActiveSync its drivers would not go in and hence ActiveSync would not recognise your device.
What is happening now seems like the same sort of issue in that now having installed ActveSync it is just sitting there saying no connection.
For ActiveSync 3.6 and below this is a documented problem and here is the fix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264693/en-us
BUT for me this does not work (well because there is no yellow unknown device in Device managers other devices).
In AUDIBLE terms
a) I get a du-duh sound when I plug in EXEC (like if you plugged in a USB key for example)
b) It shows up in the Device Manager-> Network Adapters as "Windows Mobile-based Device"
c) ActiveSync 4.0 or 4.1 does NOT give me the dulde-de-dah sound
d) ActiveSync shows no connections
Anybody any bright ideas? Surely I am not the only twonk to have inadvertently plugged in the EXEC first
Answers greatly appreciated.
BASICALLY HELP
PS: Have also looked at ActiveSync trouble shooter 2001, the ActiveSync 4.0 troubleshooting article from Msoft, tried switching off firewall, no result. Have tried deleting the Mobile-based Device, uninstalling AS 4.0, rebooting, reinstalling AS 4.0 or 4.1 then plugging EXEC,no good.
PPS: I convinced a friend to let me install AS 4.1 on his computer and then plugged in the EXEC and all was fine, so the EXEC itself is sound.
Maybe this will help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
Sorry, didn't read your message good.
Just see now you already did looked at the link....
But another idea: if your device works on your friend PC, then why not
do a clean install for the OS on your own PC?
Maybe this will solve your problem.
Dodger,
Thanks for the thoughts. Well actually thinking about a reinstall of my computer due a moments lapse of concentration is a difficult undertaking. With the backup of the on computer databases as well as over 100 applications installed, I think this would take me several person days.
Currently my thoughts are to clone the partition and then do a windows "over install" onthe clone, but logically that will not work because <of course> the whole point of an over install is that the registry and all applications are preserved.
I spent over 3 solid hours of googling, installing, uninstalling drivers yesterday trying to fix and can't believe I am the only one who has had this problem!
Perhaps somebody with a working ActiveSync can elaborate how does the EXEC show up in device manager (when its plugged in and synced), and also what device driver XP and /or Windows 2003 server would be using.
Thanks mb.
I was facing similar issue. Solution? Yes, uninstall my firewall, connect and sync with my JasjAr and then install the Firewall with Jasjar already connected !
This may help:
Open network connections on ur PC so u can see all connections.
Make sure AS (PC side) is enabled for USB
turn off JJ and plug it in to USB
Turn on JJ whilst watching the window of netwrok connections on ur PC
A new connection icon should pop up, then MAYBE dissapear again
Right click this icon, before it dissapears, and check it's enabled, then select properties
Now check the following items:
- does top box say "windows mobile based device"
- click "configure"
- under configure, is there a button somewhere (mine's working so I can't recall exactly where) that says something like "enable mobile device". If so, then you need to click this.
If this all fails, then repeat but with another USB port. The reason for this seeming waste of time is that you will get a DIFFERENT "Local area connection nn" icon, which may work for you.
I cant believe there hasnt been one mention of rebooting your PC - Which I can assume you already have done?
What OS are you running on your PC?
I have only just got my MDA PRO but this may help! as I did the same thing and for a while XP Pro wouldnt recognise the device.
Uninstall ActiveSync
Reboot PC
Install Activesync V4.0
Plug in USB Device
If there is still a problem connecting you shoudl see a USB device not recognised in your deviuce manager.
It almost seems like there is a time you have to wait before XP will respond normally to you unplugging and replugging in the USB.
Failing this you may have to uninstall Activesync and tehn remove all activesync registry keys it may have left behind! Then reboot and start again!
Just having tisproblem now, this is pïss poor of MS to still be foisting off onto us this Activesync package in such a terible state.
I've just had activesync stop working on me. It would connect but then refuse to sync anything even though it previously worked fine. I think it got upset after I booted up the PC with the Exec connected.
Anyway an uninstall and reinstall of Activesync on the PC cured the problem. Not the most robust software though.

What works for me is to turn off the handheld, and connect the cable after that. Then turn on the device if needed. Works mot of the time then.... no excuse for MS though....
Hi,
I can't get sync over bluetooth to work with the WMDC in Vista.
First I established a partnership with the device using a USB cable. That worked!
Then I paired my toshiba laptop (internal bt radio) with the blueangel (ticked the ActiveSync service checkmark). That almost worked.. I entered the same passkey on both and then vista tried to add a driver for the blueangel, but never found the driver. Goes online, doesn't find it and prompts me for a CD. Does such a driver exist? I just end up with a nonfunctionning "Bluetooth Peripheral Device".
If I press on nevertheless and on the blueangel I "Connect via bluetooth" it authenticates and says "Connected", but on the laptop in WMDC it says "Connecting" for a while, then "Error".
Any help appreciated!
PS: Amazing job on getting WM6 out on this device!!

Just curious, do you have WMDC 6, or 6.1?
Wmdc 6.1.6965
works fine here with wmdc 6.1. Besure to tick to the box for activesync in bletooth profiles on your device when pairing the first time.
Canaan,
I did tick the box.. which BT stack and monitor are you using on the PC and on the device? Were you prompted to install drivers on vista at any point? Thanks!
No, i wasnt prompted to install any drivers.Never have, not even on xp pro/wm2003-2005. I'm running vista and broadcom stack. Check your in discovery mode and your com ports match on both device and desktop/laptop bluetooth settings.
Here is how it is done under vista
1.go to control panel, bluetooth devices and turn your BT discovery on
2.then turn your devices BT on and search for devices
3.after finding your pc pair it with your BA ( i use passkey 00000)
4.then the wizard will ask you which services you want to use from your pc, select activesync
5.then open activesync on BA and select from the menu "connect via bluetooth"
and thats all
requirements are that you have WMDC 6 or 6,1 with default connection options (by default BT sync is on)
Thanks for you reply. I guess I wasn't clear in my initial problem description.. the steps you outlined are exactly what I'm doing. However, when I get to step 4 and pair the device with the laptop, vista doesn't find the driver for the BA. It looks online for it and doesn't find it, so it prompts me. I don't know where that driver is and so I end up with a non-functionning "Bluetooth peripheral device" in the device manager.
I'm kind of suspecting the Toshiba proprietary bluetooth stack and monitor on the laptop at this point. I had no luck with the MS stack either. I guess I'll try to get the widcomm stack going on the laptop, sounds like it's the only one that works with the BA.
well connect your device to cradle or usb, then run windows update, it will find updates to the windows mobile device driver (here it done it twice) install it reboot and your device will be found
there is no service "activesync" after devices are paired
Hi Xplode,
I did your steps and my BA can find my pc via bluetooth...
However, when you said a list of services comes up, and choose "activesync"... it is not there...
the only 2 sevices I can choose are "wireless stereo" and "serial port".
Also, when I try my PC to find my BA, it says that "it cannot detect remote devices"
Am I doing something wrong here?
do you have WMDC installed and updates installed ?
go to your bluetooth settings of your laptop and delete the serial port created for your phone and delete your partnership. delete partnership from phone too, then re-pair them. You should see your laptop's bluetooth searching for services on your device. It should list dial-up networking, serial, handsfree and activesync. If this fails,i suggest your try and force-install widcomm/broadcom drivers. On www.parrot.fr they have instructions on how to install a microsoft bluetooth stack over the toshiba one's.the toshiba stack doesnt play nice with a lot of devices.
Xplode, yes I installed the updates... as I have read before, connect via usb and run windows update... I found 2 updates, installed them and reboot...
Maybe before I go on, jst a quick question:
is bluetooth activesync faster than usb activesync?
The point of my question would be.. I wouldnt want to go through all these hassles if at the end, bt connection is slower, cause for me it is just a nice add in function, not a requirement.....
Thanks and please answer this question for those who have done it...
Bluetooth activeync is a little slower than usb activesync but for me,its still more convenient than carrying the cradle or cable around.
USE this way.
After having connect your device once over USB to the WMDC in BT device manager in your PC add an incoming port i.e. COM3, now go to the Mobile device, turn on BT, open BT manager and in the setting under Com port tab add the same # COM port, if you can't find under COM scroll to BTS, it doesn't matter where the port number is located. Now go to WMDC click your Device icon go to Connection Setting and instead of leaving the default Bluetooth for others device scroll to the number of Com port you choose before COM3. Try to connect from device et..voila. I really would like to know why u have to guess always everything with Microsoft and paying and never being paid for my long night spent to solve their problems.
..I forgot for the further access you must start from BT manager on device --> acttyvesynch BT and click on your PC icon
to synch. If ever will not work maybe WM6 reset in your device actyvesynch to USB instead leaving BLUETOOTH, just change it.
Hope it helps somebody !
I ran into this same problem with the Toshiba BT stack on an ASUS notebook and an HTC Wizard (WM5). The solution was found in a Toshiba troubleshooting PDF.
From Control Panel, start the Bluetooth Local COM applet (installed by Toshiba BT), find the COM port labeled “LocalCOMServer[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LocalCOM)]”. Usually it's COM7.
After identifying the correct COM port, open WMDC, click “Connection Settings” under “Mobile Device Settings”, ensure "Allow Connections to one of the following:" is checked, then select the COM Port found above (again, usually COM7).
Proceed as usual and "ActiveSync" should appear instead of "Serial Port".
I'll continue the instructions for whoever might benefit:
With the computer's BT in discoverable mode, run ActiveSync on the mobile device, and tap [Menu][Connect via Bluetooth]. If there is no existing partnership, you'll be prompted to create one. Afterward (or otherwise), the computer will be checked for a running ActiveSync/WMDC process, and if all goes well, you'll see "ActiveSync" among the available services, which should obviously be checkmarked, followed by a tap on [Finish].
Now a BT link can be initiated from within ActiveSync on the mobile device, by tapping [Menu][Connect via Bluetooth] as above.
Hope this helps.
I have a new htc tytn that I'm trying to hotsync with my notebook vaio, with a windows xp, but I don't get it. The computer dont recognize the device (it shows "not connected", despite the connection by a USB cable. I did all the recomendations of the guide book, but it did'nt work. Anyone have any idea?
find the usb to pc icon
find the usb to pc icon
it is either in settings/connections or in settings/system in most of the roms I have seen.
open it up and see if the box is check for advanced network functionality. If so, uncheck it. That has had to be changed for all Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 devices I have had, then activesync started working.
try active synch 4.5
You can also download ActiveSynch 4.5 if you have WM6/6.1.
hotsync is for palm based devices....
I recently had to replace my notebook, new one came with Vista, also coincided with purchase of Touch Pro 2.
my current kaiser (WM 6.0) works fine, connect usb, vista fires up mobile device center.
connect pro 2 (WM6.1) via usb , nothing, device center does not start up.
run active sync on the pro 2, Sync button is grayed out. I have set 'sync all pc's....' to usb in the connections screen.
have checked other threads but so far come up blank.
can anyone point me in the right direction to possible fixing this, I need to reload some software not to mention I would like to and would like to check out some of the roms on this sight.

Have you tried starting mobile device center manually? Also had some troubles now and then, reboot of my pc and softreset of my phone usually fixed my problems. Else most responses will probably include the usual: remove all partnerships and/or reinstall mobile device center.
Btw, does your device show up in your hardware list or under my computer when connect it to your USB port?
mobile devioce center (Vista) and htc pro 2
have tried pc reboots and htc reset, no go.
If i connect my kaiser it appears as a device under my computer and device center picks it up.
connect the pro 2, does not appear as a device under my computer and if device center running does not attempt a connect, if device center not running vista does not start it
also no partnerships currently set up.
did have a kaiser one , deleted this when the pro 2 did not connect

Well as far as I know Windows should at least show your device under My Computer, even without a partnership or without even having Mobile Device Center installed.
So my best guess is there is some conflict which prevents your TP2 from even connecting to your notebook. Have you tried connecting it to a desktop PC? Or are you trying to connect it through an USB hub or something? If so it is possible the hub isnt delivering enough power.
I had the same issue and ending up hard resetting my phone before I figure what I did wrong. Go to settings on TF3D then all settings. Go to connections, and under usb to pc, select active sync. If it says disk drive it will not work in active sync. Also if the enable faster data sync is checked...uncheck it. Sometimes this causes an issue.
Go to settings and choose USB->PC Settings. Here you can disable "fast synch". Now it should work, if not, activate "fast synch" ^^
YOu might want to re-instal active sync ( device center ), I had a simulair problem, and it was solved
gz reb3lzrr
rodium and vista sync
firstly thanks for the many replies.
still no go
reinstall device center
rebooted pc, reset phone.
tried with a xp laptop with active sync, still no go.
neither pc recognises the rodium phone.
when I attach my kaiser each pc 'chimes' , ie recognises the attachment and activesync or device center start up and connect
rodium nothing.
tried each of the usb ports and couple of cables, all work for kaiser non work for rodium.
Hi. I have had the same problems. Disable fast sync like my man neonoxDE said. That will help you. Altough it helped me. With Win7 you can sync with that option enabled.
(QUOTE: Go to settings and choose USB->PC Settings. Here you can disable "fast synch". Now it should work, if not, activate "fast synch" ^^)
thanks tried that as well, still no joy.
Its has if the phone is not telling the op system that its there. Ie the interupt to the op system that happens when a usb device is attached is not happening, or being ignored.
i had the same problem. i had to uncheck the box advanced network funtions. that wen you go in to settings and usb to phone.
that was the problem with my phone sync.
sorry for bad english.
Ugh
Just went through this all tonight. Also coming from a Kaiser (AT&T Tilt).
To get it functional, I had to:
1.) Add Remove Programs
2.) Remove Windows Mobile Device Center
3.) Remove Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update (if you installed it).
4.) Disconnect USB from phone.
5.) Reboot
6.) Reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 from CD (Sprint here).
7.) Install Windows Mobile Device Center Drvupdate. (WMDC dir on Sprint CD, called drvsomething or other, depending on if you're 64 bit or x86 on your PC).
8.) Then had to "Clear Storage" on the phone and let it clear itself (a simple reset did not let this work)
9.) Once soft reset was completed, I could connect the phone, it then found it, and worked correctly.
Yeesh.
Unchecking the box everyone is saying didn't have an effect for me, though I tried it many times before going all nuclear.
Thanks for this.
Tried this on my vista laptop still no go.
If I connect my kaiser 'installs device driver software' pop up displays and when this is finished windows mobile device center starts up.
Initial connection of pro2, nothing
After having the pro 2 connected for at least 45 mins I did get an an install device driver message, the device was unknown and device center did not start up.
so it appears that the pro2 was recognised has an unkown device
additional info
loaded down a usb moniter onto my laptop.
When I plug in the Kaiser usb monitor shows connection of the device on the specific port.
Unplug this and plug in the PRO2 onto the same port nothing shows as being connected.
rapidlycomming to the conclusion problem with the data pin outs on the USB, does anyone know of a diag program that could test this out or an easy way to check this.
save me the initial cost of checking by a repairer (which in the UK can be steep)
Although my TP2 will sync with USB, most of the time I sync via a bluetooth connection.
Have you tried doing it that way?
Maybe this will work.
One unconventional way to fix this, is to go to your phones activesync. select menu, then change it to bluetooth sync. After that, soft reset phone and connect via usb.
Windows Update
Try conducting a Windows update manually when your phone is connected via USB cable.

I have a strange reoccuring problem with connecting my Topaz to my pc. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and have WM6.5 on the phone.
The thing is, that I can have the phone connect to the computer for weeks several times daily always using the same USB-port, but suddenly I get 'USB Device Not Recognized'. Then I can change to a different port and it works again for a few days. Unfortunately it stops working on the next port aswell after a few days, and then it kind of decides, that it's generally unrecognizable.
I have tried almost every thing. From softresetting the phone, rebooting the pc, unplugging the pc, uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Mobile Device Center, updating USB drivers on the system, changing the cable - you name it.
All my other devices work just fine on the USB-ports.
It's as if det driver for the Topaz just gets corrupt. Then again I have actually experienced, that it just works again after some time, with no obvious reason.
I'm really starting to get desperate here. Is there any way of getting hold of a driver which can be used in this situation? Reinstalling the device Center does not work at all.
I would be very greatful if anyone could help me find a solution for this very annoying problem.
I don't know how this works in the "Windows Seven"..
But with ActiveSync in Xp i excluded the partnership and everything worked again.
I think that you have to exclude the device in Windows Mobile Device Center.
Restart your computer and try again.
Best regards!
Eduardo
One thing I had with XP was when the 'Enable faster data synchronization' in 'USB to PC' settings in Connections was checked I has a similar problem.
I unchecked it and it was fine since.
It might not help at all, but it solved the USB connection problem for me.
Well minded Steeve24!!!
Thanks for your replys.
I tried deactivation 'Enable faster data synchronization', but that did'nt change anything.
The I uninstalled the driver in Device Manager and exclude the device in Windows Mobile Device Center. After that I rebooted, mouthed the phone and waited for the driver installation but I still end up with USB Device Not Recognized.
Is it possible to force a specific driver on to this device and if so, what specific driver should i tell the system to use?
Tried switching USB port. That gave me connectivity. I reestablished the partnership, started a sync and half way through the sync, i lost connection again.
Tried once again to remove drivers, break partnership, reboot and try a different USB port. Plugged in the phone and got at complete sync. After the sync the connection closed and reopened and now I'm back to USB Device Not Recognized.
Having exactly the same issue with MDA Compact IV (aka HTC Touch Diamond) with Windows 7 (Enterprise) - 64bit!
Also tried nearly everything but still getting the "USB device not recognized" message ...
Device manager shows a "unknown device" (yellow symbol with "!"):
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
If tried to update the driver but then Windows 7 says:
The best driver for the following device is already installed:
Unknown Device.
It seems like C:\Windows\inf\oim24.inf is the required inf-file for installing the device. Wonder how I force W7 to use this one ...
Same issue on XP
When trying to sort my brothers TD2 on his laptop
Interesting little detail:
When I move the USB connection to a hub with external power (like the one in my screen), I seem to be able to keep the connection going for far longer then in a USB hub without external powersupply. That is defenitely different from WM6.1, which always ran smoothly on the "powerless" USB hub.
I imagine you've tried the setting which disables charging whilst connected to a PC?
Now it works again!
Yes, tied that - same difference ...
Yesterday i cleaned my computer with ccleaner and malwarebytes antimalware. The latter found and remowed 18 trojans/hijackers.
Today i connected my TD2 to a non-powered USB port and voila, connection and sync works again.
I do hope the connection is stable this time. If it gets corrupted again first thing to try is cleaning, rebooting and retrying. Of course I'll post here if the problem returns and pass on the information about the effectiveness of the above procedure.
same problem
in have a htc raphael for 1.5 years now. i made several installs of roms from your site, with active sync.
now, i have this weird problem. my htc is not recognised anymore. the error message is "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ".
I tried this in all usb from my laptop. after that i tried in 3 other machins, with the same result.
my laptop is Sony vaio vgn-ar51m and i am running windows 7. the ROM is EnergyROM_23081_RAPHAEL_29.Oct.2009
till now i had no problem syncing and upgrade-ing my phone with the same configuration.
any ideas, friends ?
thank you
Well, a few days ago my TD2 refused to be recognized on the nonpowered USB again. I ran Ccleaner (removing 8 GB of crap!), rebooted at voila, it connected again.
tried ccleaner, after that reboot comp reboot htc.
other setttings:
does not charge when connected to pc
enable faster data syncronization - disabled
nothing at all..
also, my phone is not connecting correctly with bluetooth also.
...i am kind of mad on raphy
