Clearing email settings on 8525 - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I've had to have my 8525 replaced via warranty exchange. Before switching out units I did a SPB backup of the 1st unit and after moving the battery and sim card to the new unit did a backup restore. For some reason the restore didn't properly set up the email accounts I had on the original unit (they don't show up on the messaging list) . So I've had to go into the new unit and set up my pop email accounts, but I am not able to use the existing names for the email accounts since apparantly there is something setup in the registry referring to the original account's names, etc. I am even showing a message for one of the original accounts showing up on my today screen. Is there a procedure for 'wiping' out the original email settings via a registry editor or some other option?

This seems to have been a bit of an issue with Spb backup. When it happened to me, the only way around it was to hard reset, then restore selectively from backup ie everything EXCEPT mail. Then setup email again.
Like you, when I tried to do it the 'normal' way, it kept telling me that the name 'hotmail' was already in use etc.
I think they are trying to fix this as it's a bit annoying when you lose sms messages etc. And it doesn't seem to affect everyone.
Try it. Hope it works for you.

I seem to remember somebody saying that if you did the restore twice, it would work. I never tested it, but I'm pretty sure I saw it mentioned a few weeks ago.
If you haven't already completed setting them up manually, you might want to give it a shot and report back here as to whether or not it worked.

Activesync wipes contacts after restoring system with Sprite

My XDAII recently decided to hard reset on its own and I hadnt backed up for about 10 days (I use the latest version of Sprite Backup). After restoring I connected via activesync and it read the contacts on the PDA and decided to wipe 10 days worth of new contacts and outlook database edits! Because they wernt on the XDAII it assumed I had deleted them! Is there a way of avoiding this in the future?
in the activsync options there is a option called
conflict resolution which deside how conflicting settings are handled
Its not about a conflict- there is only 1 version of the new contact on my PC which it choses to delete because it doesnt see one on the XDA. I set the conflict resolution setting to "always replace the item on my PPC"
well some times when i sync there comes a dialog asking me if
i want to replace items on my ppc or on my pc or combine them
i always pick combine and clear up manualy if i get double entries
but as a rule ms software that you get for free have some troublesome strangeness personalities
I got caught by this a few times. My solution was to delete all the items on the desktop ( without emptying the waste bin so you can get them back if you need to) and then synch. This avoided the all delete or all duplicate scenarios. I think Sprite must affect a synch flag when it restores. Anyway - this works for me as I don't add that many contacts on a daily basis

Doesn't matter how many copies etc - it's a hidden TIMESTAMP that might cause this.
So despite them being in Outlook, and NOT on the phone, when you restore back to the phone, the timestamp is more recent than in Oultook.
Thus, when you sync, Outlook thinks ITS numbers are old, and no longer needed, and deletes them
I agree, it's the timestamp, how we work around it?
Shadamehr,
I completely agree with your diagnosis, and is very annoying to get the original date changed on my main PC since the date stamp is for me a criteria used to understand when a contact or an info comes from...
Is there a solution?
I use XBack-up, but I understand that also people who use Sprite have the same problem... is there a software without this problem?
By the way, taking about back-up, mine done on a kingston 128 menory takes around 6 hours... (restore is under one hour) is that normal? What is your experinece? Do u think it's a memory card a ROM or a device problem?
Thanks,
Chris

Lost my Email accounts after crash!!!

Well my O2 Exec went a little doolally the other day...
Froze on the password screen with no way of getting password input or using keyboard to input password. Happend after a phone call came in
I soft resetted and all seemed fine... Except my today screen details the number of unread emails in two of my email accounts. I cannot access them!
Messaging does not list them either. I cannot create the account again with the same name as it is already in the system!
Any way of either getting the accounts back into the messaging list or removing them from the machine so they can be re-added?
Otherwise reasonably happy with the device.
P.S. the crash also caused my wireless settings to be lost and also my bluetooth partnerships
I have noticed a similar problem in that if you soft reset after receiving e-mails, or texts, even say an hour after receiving them, the Exec forgets that they were there, and deletes them.
This is fine for e-mails (well, annoying not fine) as you can download them again, but for texts it means they are lost forever.
Is there a way to make the device 'save to disk' all Pocket Outlook items before having to soft reset?
I realise one shouldn't have to soft reset so often, but with a device this buggy it's outta our hands.
The biggest problem is the actual account is gone
It shows up on eth today screen but is not selectable from messaging. This means I cant read old or get new ones. I cant recreate the accounts with the same name.
I suppose that its looking like I need to do a hard reset
I had a very similar problem on my Blue Angel a while back and after trawling through the registry, I eventually found some references to the "ghost" e-mail accounts. Deleting them sorted things out for me, so it'll probably work for your Exec?
Wish I could remember whereabouts they were in the registry, but it was a few months ago...sorry. Have a snoop around and see what you can find though, it might save you a hard reset.

Cannot get rid of an email account

I set up one of my email accounts on the MDA which worked fine, then started playing with RegistryWizard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725). I made several tweaks, but I think this is what may have caused the problem:
6. Use different email address in MSN
Registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Pocket MSN
Key: AutoDomain (string)
Value: @hotmail.com (default)
Delete key to use any email address
After I checked this option and rebooted, I deleted the email account in “Messaging”. That is a rather strange sequence of actions, and I messed up something in the process, as after this I started receiving strange messages in my “Text Messages” account (which I cannot delete). The messages are always from “701” (whatever that means). The “To” field shows my phone number, and the body of the message shows the email address of the account that I deleted. The messages do not come to the email account because I deleted it, but they somehow still show up as txt messages.
I looked in the “Messaging” options – the account is not mentioned anywhere anymore, but the messages still come in. Even hard reset did not correct this. When I look in the registry after hard reset, the “@hotmail.com” value is back there (if it was ever gone, I never checked).
I tried searching for the deleted email address with Total Commander, and it does not find anything. Although I am not sure I am doing the search correctly. I search for “myrealbox” or “s-eugene” (which are both parts of my email address), but the Total Commander does not let me put anything into “Containing text:” field, so I may be missing some values in the registry.
I wonder where the device still keeps that email address. I have a backup of my data from before I ever started playing with the registry, but I wanted to avoid restoring it if possible because my current version of appointments and contacts is newer than the backup. Plus, if hard reset did not take care of the problem, will restoring the backup do that?
Hope somebody has some further ideas on how to delete the email account completely. Thank you.
I'm the last person that would probably be able to help, but because you metion text messages, I wonder if you have inadvertantly changed something for msn messenger? It has an option to receive messages as sms in one of the options screens.
Well, there is a checkbox under "MSN Options - SMS" called "If my data connection is temporarily unavailable, use SMS to keep my messages and contacts up-to-date." I do not entirely understand what it means, frankly, but the box is unchecked, anyway.
I guess my pointed question is: what could have screwed up my settings so much that even hard reset does not help eliminate this email account? Yes, I fooled around with registry, but I thought hard reset returns the registry to the original state?
I did not burn a new ROM on it. There is a miniSD card in the device, and there is some information left on it from before the hard reset, but I can't imagine that that can affect things this way.
Any ideas, anyone?

Backup Software Problem

Hi,
I've used SPB backup for years on my PDA's so when I backed up my HD2, everything looked like it backed up ok. Had to hard reset the HD2 but didn't think much about it because I had a backup exe. Ran the exe twice and nothing changed. Im pretty sure I have the latest version that is compatible with WM 6.5.
Do you have to turn off HT sense in order for the back up to work properly?
I've read in the forum that others have had good luck with Sprite, anyone use either of these programs successfully?
Thanks for any insight you can provide
Mike

I used SPB successfully, except for the fact that when sync'ing after restore, the PC does not recognize the device as a device that was already connected, and sets up a new Mobile-pc connection (which makes a second connection on the mobile, and can cause problem sync'ing mail).
I have read that others had problems with restored SMSs when using SPB, I did not check that.
I had a VERY BAD experience with the Sprite backup.
I just would NOT restore the contacts and calendar data,
and messed up the multi-language support after ROM upgrade,
no matter what restore method I selected.
So -
in my experience concludes that - NO backup program is reliable.
Depending on what you want from your backup solution, Microsoft MyPhone is particularly good!
It syncs data to & from an online store where you can view it via a web interface. You can sync your data with MyPhone, hard reset the device, sync your data again and it's just back.
What's more, you can set it to automatically sync data on a periodic basis. I have it run a sync at 4am every day, and it's only ever failed a couple of times, and I've been using it for over 6 months now!
Have a look at it - it should be on your phone, but it's in the marketplace if it's not there. Alternatively, just google MyPhone.
Hope this helps

Yeah, right,
just the small fact they dont back up the data on their servers make it just as unreliable.
(The server crashed no too long ago, and they had no backup, and many users lost their data)

If you rely 100% on a backup then you are gonna get screwed sometimes. Like I said, mine syncs daily, so even if it didn't work for a couple of days I wouldn't actually lose any data unless my phone went down.
So basically, if everything fails then yes, you'll lose your data.
Anyway, neither of the articles you linked even mentions the MyPhone service.
Thanks for the info though
Just as a matter of interest, cloud services like MyPhone seem to be on the increase. However who is asking the questions of these service providers as to how safe and secure our data really is?
So if I upload a thousand contacts onto MyPhone how do I know that someone isn't going to get their hands on that data or, worse still, use it for either commercial advantage or nefarious purposes?
I am not against cloud services per se; however these services, including MyLocation, seem to be getting accepted without any of us either fully understanding how secure all this data is, who actually holds it, what the impacts are on our right to privacy, etc, etc.
Just asking the question chaps. Interested in your sensible views.
WB
I'm with you, WB, I suspect we (the global "we") are losing our grip on our data and privacy without even realising it.
personally I just sync with outlook for contacts and mails and I backup outlook every week or so. I doubt ill use cloud services for some time to come.
hey dude, i am using spb backup i hard reset lots of times because i trial lots of softwares, till this date never had any problems! SPB been really reliable
I've been using SK Tools to backup my HD2 since I got it. It works fine with the HD2 except for one small but weird issue.
The first time I restored a backup from SK Tools, it restored everything just fine, except, when in ActiveSync, I could not copy or write to the phone, nor could I install new software on the phone. It seems like the permissions on the phone had been changed to "Read Only" for all files and folder. However, if I then connected the HD2 to my PC, but select it to connect as an external drive, I could then perform read/write data from/to the SD card. However, if I started to install a new .cab file from the SD card it would still fail during installation.
The way to overcome this issue, was for me to perform a hard reset, connect the phone to my PC with ActiveSync, perform a read/write to/from the phone, then after that, do the restore with SK Tools. If a file had been read and written to the phone/SD card with Activesync prior to the restore, it would then restore perfectly, and everything will be back to normal.
Other than this one weird issue, I haven't had any problems with using SK Tools for backup.
Had always good experience with Sprite Backup, used it on "O2 Orbit II", HTC Touch HD, and now using Sprite Backup on HD2.
On HD2 i didn't need a Image restore yet, but I do not expect to get a problem in this case.
File restore worked well!
Using the default Sprite Backup configuration contacts, calendar and tasks will not be backed up, because in the case of a Image restore Sprite-Software says you can get double entries afterwards when sync with Outlook.
manilla
Thanks all for your input, maybe this was just a glitch. I'll stick with SPB unless it happens again...
I've tried Sprite Backup and SPB Backup to get my call history and SMS's on to my HD2 (from a TyTN2) but have a problem with the results form both. Messages display in the Sense tab, and in the "all messages" list if the traditional non-conversational view mode is used they all display correctly and can be opened and viewed. If I leave the phone in conversation view however, I can't view any of the conversations. The conversations appear in the list, but if I tap any of them it goes straight bcak to the Sense tab showing the newest message. Photos for contacts are also not displayed against the conversations. If I send a text to someone it starts a new conversation and displays the photo. These new conversations open properly when you go back to them.
I can't work out what is causing this, anyone else had this problem?

Email issue: not sending or auto-addressing

My email stopped working right about 2 weeks ago. It MAY be related to the new TMOUS ROM I loaded, but not sure. I can reply to email without issue, but I can't auto-address an email, nor can I send an email that isn't a reply. In auto-addressing, usually I start typing an address and options show up, not anymore. In sending, I type in an email address (not a name) and hit send. The soft button flashes, but nothing changes on the screen. I tried searching on email issues, re setup all my email information without using Manilla (native windows setup), and tried soft-resets galore. No go.
One complication in the past has been I have a large contact database (12k names) and so autocomplete often took some time (30 secs or so) to bring up options. Now however, I can leave it plugged in over nite and no suggestions.
Any thoughts anyone?
OK tried a bunch of stuff, finally gave up and re-installed the 2.13 ROM update. Without re-installing all my stuff, I tried it again. Same problem. However, I had already sync'd my contacts, so don't know if the database size is the problem. Used to work fine in the previous ROM (2.10).
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Bump? Anyone else having trouble with email?
I found a portion of the issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544453
While the autocomplete suggestions are coming up now, the email still doesn't send. An additional issue is that I can't save the email to drafts either.
Another symptom, periodically I will click on an email, and only a blank screen comes up.
Did the hard reset again, and rebuilt one app at a time. Nothing caused the email problem. Seems to be related to my contact database. I'm either going to have to shrink that, or find out if something in the database is corrupted...
So I restored my database a little at a time (by unplugging the cable during sync. ) It was working fine until I put the last ones in. Then all three symptoms occured simultaneously (no address drop down, no send, and blank emails on view). I suspect at this point a corrupted record in the database, but it might still be size based. I found a couple of chinese characters in the database, which might be the problem. Deleted an restored that record, but doesn't fix it. May have to hard reset again...
Does anyone know a way to clean up and verify the integrity of an outlook database?
PIM database too big?
The problem does seem to be with the size of the database. I found that by removing one category of contacts (~4000), behavior reverted to normal. Restoring and then removing another category (~4500) did the same thing, so it does not appear to be a corrupted database.
While this works, it would be nice to have all my contacts back in. Does anyone have an idea on the limitations of the contact database size?
