Hi,
Sometimes my backlight does not switch on when I've pushed the on/off button for 1 sec to go out of the stand-by mode. I can see that the telephone is working but only without backlight. I don't know where I can find the settings. I'm using the Vario from T-Mobile.
Can somebady help me with this?
thank you in advance.
Regards Witte
maybe hard reset or rom update? , cant imagin what will do that unless somthing is hogging all cpu power perhaps
A reset will help but I'm not happy to update my ROM. I'm afraid for more problems.

Spb GPRS Monitor does this problem on my 9100 too, any software with SPB in the name seems quite buggy.. ;-)
OK,
right now I don't have the problem anymore but I'll will monitor it and maybe then I will uninstall the gprs monitor.
Thanks!!

MDA Backlight issue
I ran across a problem with the MDA, where I adjusted the Backlight settings. From there on the Backlight woulf not turn on unless I went to the setting control to adjust it. The fix: Go to backlight settings, set your brightness desired (maybe in the middle). Go to Battery power from the tabs that are currently listed. Make sure you have (Turn on Backlight when a button is pressed or the screen is tapped) Selected. Then press ok.
That should fix it if the issue you are experiencing is similar to mine.
I have the same problem with my artemis. And i think is from spb plus since the backlight control button from today dont even work on this new version. Or from phone profiles. Everytime i make a soft reset i have to reajust the backlight or when it turns off i have to make another soft for reajusting before it goes out. It's quite boring and i'm trying to find an app to replace spb with the close button and task button ant the today buttons shortcuts if is that the problem. And my artemis rom dont know why dont have the option on the backlight settings to turn on when screen tapped or key pressed.
Whenever my phone goes into standby mode, or when I manually put the phone into standby mode by briefly pressing the power button The phone is unresponsive to any other key press or screen taps. I have to press the power button again to get it out of standby mode. I am using a usa T-Mobile MDA with the 1.08 rom. The only today plugins I have installed are magic button, rlcalendar and powercheck. Is there w way to fix this? It is kinda annoying.
take a look here..
start / settings / buttons / the lock tab at the bottom /
there should be three options, if you have the top one checked, then only the power button will wake your phone up.
hope this helps

I prefer it like this as it means you don't have to rememebr to 'lock' the phone before putting it in a case/pocket/bag to stop accidental turning on/dialing.
I've asked a similar question in a different thread... but does anyone know how to prevent the buttons from becoming active when the device automatically re-starts itself? e.g. when it's in my pocket, I don't want the keypad suddenly activating when a text message notification appears on the screen. Do I have to lock the keypad manually to do this?
Andre
Thank you Gazzrenn, your suggestion helps greatly!

I have security set up that have to enter the password before the device comes on and the buttons become active, so I dont suffer from this. If I dont enter the password, ie when its in my pocket and I dont hear it, it turns off after 1 minute.

Don't you find this a bit tedious if you want to answer a call but have to enter a password first?
I would prefer my device not to activate the screen when its in my pouch or pocket, but to have to activate the keyboard and enter a password to answer a call I find is tedious - or have you found a quicker way to do it.

Call answer is the one exception.
I have the password setup so that no-one that steals my device can get my data, sure they can hard reset and use the device (not as a phone as that will be blocked from UK networks) but they loose all my private/personal data

I haven't used the password feature.
If I set a password does that automatically allow the phone to be answered without entering it?

Yes - when the phone rings the phone you are able to answer, but once you hang up the password is requested.
hey all,
my problem is this: if i put my BA into flight mode, after a random period of time (its been anything from 5min to 30min) it automatically comes out of flight mode and switches back to the phone being on.
now, i'm basically using my BA as a pure pda so i haven't even got a sim card in it... if i can disable the phone side of things all together, that'd be great, but if not some kind of fix to stop it reenabling the phone would be much appreciated.
thx~

Hi
have the same Problem in Flight-mode. Is there anybody who knows how to patch this?
This might be a problem for me..
I'm away to KL next week (12hrs in the plain)
Flight-Mode
Be sure, that no application (like Pushmail) is starting any GPRS-Connection.
In my case (installed HTC Comm-Manager), I can't start/stop Pushmail over the Comm-Manager - i change the settings in ActiveSync (Shedule) and change to manualy.
Then it's recommended that you stop the Data-Conneciton. I can't stop it with Comm-Manager, so I use the G-Symbol in the Titelbar to end the connection.
Perhaps it helps.
Chris
I think i've found a fix for this... well, so far my phone hasn't gotten out of flight mode for 72 hours so i'm hoping this is a fix.
anyways, goto start>settings>menu and make sure "profiles" is enabled
then goto start>profiles
in all the profiles, for the ring type select "none" and set the phone volume to the lowest setting then click apply for each one separately
eg: click on general, select "none" for ring type, set the phone volume to none, click "apply" or "ok" (its the left softkey). then go back into the program and repeat for silent, etc etc...
but yeah, this seems to have worked for me so far. ^_^v
Hi all,
I have decided to uninstall S2U2 and I don't want any other locking applications. However, is there is a way I can have the standard device lock activated with a short press of the power button?
Currently I am having to hold the 'End call' button until it locks, then turn the screen off with the power button.
Thanks
I have a pin setup and use the short press of the power button to put the phone into powersave 0 whixh then outs the phone into pin lock after a short while
If you push the hang off button for more than 10seconds, it will be locked
No...

I don't know about your device...
On my HD you can press the end button and count until 3, and the device is locked
I can't remember whether it's in HD Tweak or Advanced Config, but there's an option to automatically lock the keypad on screen turning off (both timed out or power button press I assume, but not tested) so you could try that?
Edit: instead of being lazy I actually looked it up - it's in HD Tweak, option 4.1; Lock -> AutoLock
Just tried it and it works, turn backlight off by short power press and it's locked a well as screen turning off!
Good tip: works for me!
By the way: you can configure what happens when you pres the "disconnect" button too.
Guys
Thanks for this thread. I am very confused when it comes to locking the phone. Can anyone tell me...
Does the built in device lock work well? Will it keep the phone locked when a call comes in ?
If so, then why do people use S2U2 or other third party apps? Also some people say that S2U2 drains the battery. Is this true? How does it drain the battery?
The HD tweak had the disadvantage that when the screen turns in 'shaded' state the device is also locked.
Then when unlocking the device the screen stays 'shaded'.

Maybe it takes you 10 seconds to count to 3.
I've finally got there with locking my HD... I had a S710 before the HD, and I liked the fact that on that I could hold down the "end call" button, and that it would lock the phone and turn the backlight off. The screen would then turn off completely after whatever time I had entered (2 mins I think). And on unlocking the device the backlight would turn on.
On my HD I have now disabled the device password, but enabled my PIN request, so that it secures the phone if it has been turned off completely. This means that I can now hold down the "end call" button for 3 seconds or so and it locks the device (requiring a 2-tap process to unlock, like the S710). I have also used the standard windows mobile settings (power) to have the backlight automatically turnoff after 30 seconds, and have used HD Tweak (setting 4.1) to autolock the device when the backlight turnsoff. The only problem is that when AutoLock happens using HDTweak, when I unlock it the backlight fails to turn back on, even once I have started using the screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just to confirm my above question regarding this specific feature of HD Tweak... I have got this working on my HD now too, but when it autolocks, and I unlock it, the backlight doesn't turn back on, and the only way to make it turn back on is to hardbutton off and on the device (not power-off, just press the button the top of the phone and press it again).
This is stopping me from using the HD Tweak autolock now, which is annoying because it does precisely what I need! Can anyone offer any advice?
I've just realised that it actually says within HD Tweak itself (on 4.1 option selector) that this is a known issue... any idea on if and when it will get fixed?
How about using Gyrator to lock the device? I have set it to lock the device and switch off the screen on inserting the stylus. Also, I have it set to unlock and switch the PDA on when the stylus in removed.
Simple. Works for me, anyway!

Hi,
Is this similar to an application my friend had on his iphone. Basically, when he needs to use the phone, he needs to put in a pin to unlock. I think the Nokia E61 has a similar feature.

Mhh, I also think it's very annoying. I first used the auto lock feature by setting
HKey_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/BackLight/AutoDeviceLockEnable = 1, but I also have the backlight-issue, which is really annoying.
I also installed S2U2, but after installing that program the battery-life was inacceptable. By now I'm using the manual method, pressing hang-up for 3 seconds. It works, but I often forget it, and it then happens easily that I press the hard-button which awakes the phone from standby and I make pocket-calls.
The auto-lock feature is also exactly the thing I need, except the fact that I get the backlight issue then. Does anybody know how to fix the backlight issue? Maybe by editing another key in the registry?
Regards,
Tobi
As I said in the hint topic, in order to lock my device I just press the power off button (this activate the stand by), simple and fast
I use S2U2 at first, but it drains power too much, so I uninstall it after 2 days.
Then I use your method - hold the end call button to lock the device.
Now, I change the right softkey to invoke a small application that will turn off the machine (just like press power button). When I take out the stylus, the machine will on again.
Thus, I don't need to press any button, and I feel it is better......personally.......

Yes, but when I activate standby and put the phone into my pocket, I often accidently hit the button again, which reactivates the phone. hit_one_button_to_unlock ist not tobi-proof
Hi all.
I have this annoying problem with my Blackstone.
When the screen turns off everything closes down. It's really annoying if i'm using messenger or something and not look on it for 2 min it closes messenger down.
I know i can choose in battery setting not to turn off the unit if it's not used for a while, but i still like that the screen is turned off, but still working.
Can this be done??

Go to Start/Settings/System/Power/Advanced and you can select the screen or backlight to turn off if device is not used for x mins on either battery or external power

Yeah i know, but it only turn the lights down, not turn the screen off. It's only if i choose to turn off the device the screen turns off.
I use gyrator to set up an event that turns the screen off without turning the device off when the stylus is inserted (you can modify the default gyrator behaviour which is to lock the screen when the stylus is inserted). If you want to be fancy you could set it up to turn the screen off if the phone is turned face down, you don't really need the screen on then anyway unless you're in the habit of looking at your phone above your face while lying on your back, or trying to use it while doing acrobatics in an stunt plane.

Just tried the screen off when phone is face down and it doesn't seem to be working for me either for some reason. But the stylus in event is working fine, just pop the stylus out and put it back in again and the screen goes completely off without killing the processes in the background (can still explore phone with active sync). I wouldn't want to mess with the power button as that is really useful to provide a proper device suspend when I want it.
I have a similar problem but with the GPS.
I have raised the question here, on some other forums and directly to HTC.
From HTC I got the answer that it is done by design to minimize battery drain and that they would have many angry costumers complaining about low battery life.
The only solution I know of so far is to use a 3rd party app.
I use "screenoff" and everytime I use the GPS I go to advanced-power and uncheck all the boxes.
When I'm done using the GPS I check the boxes again, otherwise I'll have to remember to turn the screen off manually everytime in "normal" usage of the phone.
I think it's sad though on such an expensive device not to have the option to run programs and hardware in sleep mode.
I'd rather find a solution where I can push the power button as usual and where I can have the boxes in advanced-power checked all the time.
I managed to get gyrator to turn the screen off by flipping face down, just needed to put the screen off command before all the rotation disable commands. Now if I want to disable the screen I just have to flip it face down for a second or so.
Thx for all your help.
But i found out that it's not only when the screen turns off everything closes. If i just leave it on home screen for like 2 min. everything also closes down.
I've heard from another forum that it's something HTC has decided to do to keep on the battery....
I don't know if there is anything to do here then??
Go to the start button, select settings, select system , scroll down and select power then the advanced tab and UNTICK Turn off device if not used for 2mins for both external and battery power.

I had a similar problem and only thing which resolved it was a hard reset!
I'm just testing it again to make sure. Have a track playing in the HTC music app and I'm signed in to messenger. Screen is off and I'm waiting for 3 mins to make sure.

That was going to be my next suggestion, really doesn't sound like normal operation to me. So hardreset and install one app at a time until you find out what is messing things up for you. 3 mins are up and track is still playing and I'm still signed in to messenger.
Thanks to a guy called Dawsonas I just found a program called Pocketshield.
It has an application permission feature:
"When this app is running override power off: just do screen off" (use this option for music players, GPS apps, loggers, IM, or any app that needs the device to stay awake). This setting will take effect either when "Power off on lock" or "Power off after 20 seconds" options are enabled.
