I suddenly have to do it without contacts completion in the Messaging program.
Before, I could just type the first 3+ letters of a contact name on the 'To:' line in email/sms/mms/ messages and a pick list came up showing the corresponding contact(s) to pick.
That neat pick list doesn't come up anymore.... not even after a soft reset.
There still is the 'Check names' option in the menu, which also comes up with the appropriate name when entering only a few 'To:' letters, but the pick list is much more efficient ofcourse.
Note: I'm using the 2.00.04 PV PRO Crossbow ROM.
Anyone the solution?
Thanks!!
There...
....already found the solution.
Because every Crossbow version still has this 'Suggestion words when entering text' issue, I set 'suggest after X words' to the maximum of 7 letters, so that when I accidentally forgot to disable the suggesting (when Crossbow's bug enabled it again after a soft reset) the suggesting wouldn't come up by typing short words.
The thing is that, even when the entire suggesting is disabled, the number of letters you set up for 'suggest after X words' still affects the number of letters you need to enter on the 'To:' line in a new message before you see the mentioned pick list.
So, solved.

Thought I'd throw this one in incase I'd missed something.
There appears to be some basic failings in the ability to cut and paste phone numbers between various applications on the WM phone.
Take the example that I receive a SMS text message from someone not in my contacts database.
I know who the person is and I want to create a new contact entry using the received phone number.
There appears to be no way of cutting or copying the phone number from the messaging section and pasteing it into a new Contact.
Or it may be that I already have an entry for the person I just don't have their mobile number number in the contact record (or what ever new number is received).
Have I missed a trick here - or indeed is this a limitation that exists. If there is a work around I'd love to know. i just have such an appauling memory for numbers that I couldn't even remember between flicking between applications - let alone the scope for error.
Thanks
Re: Annoyance with WM5 behaviour related to number cut and p
Open the message (instead of just reading it from the list or notification window). You'll note that the From: field is already selected.
Press the Menu softkey, then Save to Contacts.
Simple as that
OK so that allows you to create a new contact. Once you have them in contacts you can do a copy of the number and paste it into an original record. Then delete the new contact just created. Ideally I'd like to miss out the intermediate step of creating another new contact - for those where I know I already have a contact entry, but just not with that particular number.
I agree with you.
There should be an extra choice after save to contact.
Like new contact/ add to contact.
The same with email. If i want to add an emailadres it makes a new contact.
An other problem i find is that copy/ paste is not always available when i select a text.
When I rename a file in file explorer I can't select the word and copy/paste by "tap and hold".
Now i use GSPocket Magic to copy/ paste
You would have thought that on the, what is it, 3rd iteration of WM they could have sorted this out.
It is behaviour like this that can make all the diference between something that is really user friendly and something which is torturous.
Hopefully there are some influential people who read this that can feed it back to the powers that be.
You can try PQz fot copy/Paste : http://www.nicque.com/PQz/
This there too : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33343
open up the message, where is says the from tap and drag on the screen to highlight the number then tap and hold on the highlighted but then when the menu opens click copy
HI All - Does anyone know how to force the phone display to show my contacts as <first name> <second name> rather than the other way a round?
I tried the hack available at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41968&sid=b73d9d6aacdea440d7d0dd916618b70c
but it didn't seem to make a difference
Dear stevep,
After installing this hack, you should tap and hold on the name in the contacts window and choose " File as: First Last " from the menu...
Regards and thanks...
Hiya! Are we talking about the same window? I mean the one that appears in the phone application. I think you are talking aobut the 'tap and hold feature' in CONTACTS app NOT the PHONE app. If I 'tap and hold' when in phone mode...I just get a window that shows all that contact's telephone numbers plus an option to send them a text
Thanks anyway
Dear stevep,
I meant that, after installing the hack, if you tap and hold in the contacts on a name and choose " File as: First Last " from the menu, then the name order is changed to First Last and this should also effect the phone window view. Now you should see the same view order in the phone window...
Regards and thanks...
File as <first> <last>
Hi again - Thanks for the reply
This is strange. The names are filed 'First' then 'Last' in Contacts, but in the phone view SOME aren't. I specifically changed one in Contacts to First Last...and when I opened up the phone window it was showing LAST, FIRST
:x
Dear stevep,
i advice you to soft reset after changing the orders to first last, because the phone window doesnt refresh it self till soft reset...May be this helps...
Regards and thanks...
Names 'order' in Contacts
Sorry...it does not appear to do this even after a soft boot. ie I still get LAST FIRST in some contacts in the phone window whilst they are FIRST LAST in Contacts
Thanks
Am facing a strange problem with my new Nexus, In Messaging when am trying to compose a message, In TO option it doesn,t show nay name and not even show any names from contacts, For Example, in my Contacts there is a nmae JOHN, but When in Messaging TO Option when i Type J it soesn,t show any contacts started from J, Everytime i have to add the Mobile Number there or Send SMS via Contacts.
Help me regarding this
Unless you memorized the person's area code + number, the name will not appear when you composed regular texts. I have found the fastest way to compose texts is to scroll through the contacts, click the name, and then select the green message smiley. Adds a few seconds of time onto the composition, but you get faster with it when you're used to scrolling through your contacts.

That's not true. I type the first letter of the name and they show up. I know what your problem is too.
You need to edit your contacts and add the number as "Mobile". I assume right now you have them set as "Home" which is the default. Your phone doesn't display "Home" numbers when you're texting.

It was my understanding you had to type two letters to get the auto-suggest to pop up, not just one. Try "JO"...

You can type one or two. His problem is that he has their phone numbers set to "Home" instead of "Mobile".

Seriously, I've always (had a G1 since launch as well) had to type two letters before the suggestions came up, I'm actually testing this right now. Going through each letter of the alphabet, and nothing comes up with just one letter inputted. If your phone does it with one, I'd like to know how!

Oh well I guess you're right. I guess I've never stopped at one letter =P
But either way I know what he's talking about. My wifes number got changed to "Home" a while ago and it would NOT display her name in the TO field. I went to edit her contact and found that it said "Home" so I changed it to "Mobile" and it fixed it.
Speak of the devil. It just did it again and I just fixed it lol.
I have twice now gone through my contacts and set Mobile first, Home second, etc for several contacts. After my newest ROM flash, the order is all messed up again, even on the Google Contacts side of things.
Is there some feature I'm missing? Am I the only one that wants a predictable listing of phone numbers on my phone?
anyone? 10char
Someone must know...
I get very anoyed by the contact's numbers order.
In my country:
- the mobile numbers begin with 06...
- fixed line numbers depends of the town, but mostly are 011..., 021..., etc.
Now - it realy is a pain in the back to search for a person, and 99% of the time to scroll down to 2cond or third number to pick...
Even when I want to send a message - the same is needed, although in my country it is not possible to send a message to a fixed line number (I know in some countries it is possible).
Is there an app to choose the order of offered numbers to dial, send messages and similar?
Cheers
I found on another forum:
"If you do a long press on the office number, a menu will appear. From the menu, you can select "Make default number". This way, when you dial, it will automatically dial the office number."
But :
- it doesn't appy to message compose,
- it can be applyed to one number only - if someone have 2 mobile phones (personal and work) - it helps just 50%
- it has to be done person by person, and it is a pain...
- it doesn't apply to all the dialers (just to default one)
Maybe I'm just going mad, but after a full reset, I think I'm missing some functionality in the Dialer.
If I pull up the Dialer, and start using T9-like search, e.g. search for "John" by dialing 5646, then the drop down list will pull up all the Contact called "John" (or that match other letters on those keys), or have "5646" in their number. If you click the down arrow/count, then the list is popped up.
Each Contact has their "default" number listed (if the default is not explicitly set on the contact, I think it uses the first/only number defined).
If you wanted to use a number other than the default, I was pretty sure that you could tap the thumbnail image to show the alternative numbers, and select from there, but this isn't working for me. Tapping the area other than the image selects the default number, but tapping the image has no effect.
Does anybody know how to get the Dialer to show the list of alternative numbers? Is it a setting/permission that I'm missing?
Anybody else having this problem, or can think of a solution?
If there a multiple numbers then i see them all listed when i click on the contact and then i select the one number i want. It was always listing them all, don't recall changing a setting
Thanks for the response - that's how I remember it working, but I can't imagine what I've done to stop if functioning like that.
I have the same problem on N910C 6.0.1. Does anyone have the solution?
P.S. I disabled all keyboards except the SwiftKey, disabled voice input and S voice. And removed S find from the notification dropdown by cuting the "com.sec.feature.findo.xml": https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/root-how-to-remove-s-finder-quick-t3161432
I dont know if that broke the dialer search, but i returned that last file and it didnt help (S find was back).
