Summary of settings for the "Universal" to work with 3 network Australia
There are 2 primary connections you need to set up.
One is for accessing Planet3 or 3 content, which is basically intranet site made by Three...in here you can only view Three content, its not full internet where you can surf anywhere on the web you want.
The second connection you need to make is for browsing the full internet just like you would on your computer.
After you have created the connections outlined below you will have to manually select or switch between them depending on what you want to do ie: surf the internet or view 3 content.
To get Planet3 (3content) working you have to set up the following connection:
1) Go to Settings - Connections - then click the Connections icon
2) Under "My ISP" click on 'Add a new modem connection
3) Enter the name for the connection: 3services
4) Select a modem: Cellular Line (GPRS , 3G) - then click Next at bottom
5) Access point name: 3services - then click Next
6) User name: *****@three.com.au
(when you signed up with 3 you where given a username & password. Enter you username before the @symbal)
Password: Enter your password
Domain: Leave blank
7) Click finnish
To access the Internet you have to set up the following connection:

3mail settings
Access point in use - 3services
Outgoing mail server - smtp.three.net.au
Send Message - immediately
User Name - your full Three email address (including @three.com.au). This will always be your 3 email address even if you are using forwarding
Password - it's a while since I set this up, but from memory it's the 4-digit PIN that you specify when setting up voicemail. Customer care should be able to reset this for you if necessary
Incoming mail server - mail.three.net.au
Mailbox type - IMAP4
Security (ports) – Off
POP3 Email
You can also set up your pop3 email accounts, use the settings as you would setting it up on your PC.
Registry Change for PIE
1) Using a registry editor, find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent
2) Edit the default value to "paragon"
3) Soft reset your universal

If your using Opera as your Browser then you can get access to most places without having to do anything else.
If your using pocket internet explorer (PIE) then its best to make changes to your registry. I personally have found that PIE seems to run faster than Opera, my Universal in general runs better without it installed, and the big bonus is that it intergrates better with Planet3. Whats even better is PIE PLUS its proving to be a very good broswer option.
At this stage Video streaming has not been worked out yet, this is for viewing Mobile TV, Big Brother, World Cup soccer etc....
There has been lots of testing done with various streaming players and the latest testing has been on the WM6 roms with their inbuilt players, however still not fully working as of yet.
Three has recently released the Depod 838Pro which is using WM5
http://www.three.com.au/PhoneDetailAction.do?mid=27&mname=Dopod 838Pro
I think our solution might be in there !!!

The Depod runs on Microsft Windows Mobile 5.0, that means that if we do get the software off it we still wont be able to install it on the Universal ?
lalalalallalalalla
I have found that WM6 which has a built in streaming player works with some of the MobileTV channels offered by 3. Channels such as CNN and a few others work ..... finally.
Very nice. Thanks. Now...how do I get a 3 sim card for my Universal. They dont sell SIM cards...last time I checked.
Nice summary! That useragent string was EXACTLY what I was looking for!
Now I've got everything working but MMS and Video streaming... (I tried Ivan's roms a while back - but they didn't seem to work for me - it might have been the earlier beta releases...)

Just get any phone from 3 and put its sim card into your Universal. That's what I did. Now I'm using my Universal with a 3 sim card, and I have a spare phone with no simcard.
What ROM and Radio versions are you guys using with your Uni's on 3?

They do sell SIM Cards - just ask for a USIM only sale (trust me, I work for a 3 Dealership....)
3's knowledge base is down
I bought my USIM back in August last year. I got the $29 cap on no contract, cancel anytime, without a phone. No problems at all. Used it in a Sony M600i, Nokia N73, LG something, Treo 750 and an HTC Universal without any trouble.
Just go in and say you have a phone, and would like to get a USIM pack on the $29 cap (or whatever you want). They will transfer your number or whatever you like. Was very easy.
My Treo 750 and HTC Universal work great with X-Series too!!

I just bought a (German ver.) MDA II. I have followed every tutorial I came across to set my phone for Cingular GPRS. I've signed up for the internet service through Cingular so this thing should work.
When I try to connect to the GPRS it says:
Cannot Connect
-------------------------------
Cannot connect for unknown reasons....
What can I possibly be doing wrong? Trust me, I have tried every different setting I ran across i.e. WAP, Data, Dialing Rules.
I know nothing (yet) about flashing or editing a ROM but intend on learning later. Is it possible that someone out there has a pre-configed ROM that I could flash this thing to solve _all_ of my problems?
Although this phone is from Germany, I believe the company I bought it through flashed the ROM for me to the English version??
ROM Version: 1.60.00WWE
ROM Date:12/03/03
Radio Version: 1.06.01
Protocol Version: 1337.16
ExtROM Version: 1.60.06
Is it my settings? Is it my ROM version? Am I holding my tongue right?
I beg and plead for your help.
Thanks!
Be glad to help. here are the settings I have discovered after much searching:

You should now have 4 different connections
Data-gprs
wap-gprs
data-csd
wap-csd
Under "normal " use the WAP setting is used.
cmccarter - Thanks for all of the info. I am much closer than before. I can connect via WAP now and my MMS is now configured correctly. THANKS!! BUT!!! It's still not allowing me to connect via GPRS. It still says that it cannot connect for unknown reasons. What else could I check??
What do you mean you couldn't get it to work after adding the media works package? Which connection stoped working?
Which brings me to another question; why would I use WAP over CSD or Data over CSD?? I don't know the difference. Heck, I don't even know the difference between WAP & GPRS. Can you tell I'm confused?
I used Afrocream's GPRS settings on this thread:
CLICK
They're almost identical, but what the heck. Works for me. Be careful of your entries and the CASE. UPPERCASE must be uppercase.
Also, be aware that (I believe) the SMS dial number *might* be regional. My phone uses a different number.
For more info on the differences between CSD & GPRS go to:
http://www.howardforums.com/
In the Cingular Message area there you will find lots of info.
I was unable to get the connection to isp.cingular to work and after talking to the CSRs at Cingular determined that it was not included in the Media Works package... no great loss as you can apparently tether to wap.cingular just as well. (tether= connect your pc via your phone using a cable, bluetooth or IR)
I might be mistaken but I have the Mediaworks package and, other than WAP sites, I'm connecting to isp.cingular.
re:
i just switched over to cingular and for the life of me cannot connect ot gprs or wap. i followed the direstions to the letter and im stuck please help...
seattleboi -- from what you posted it's very difficult to know what's going on. What happens when you try to connect? Are you sure there's no error in your entries (a slight typo, an unneeded space, etc?)
Are you sure that you have GPRS enabled with Cingular and that there's no problems in your area? Have you slipped the SIM card into another phone to confirm this?
Since these settings seem to be working for most of us (with iMate and other phones) there's no easy way to figure out why it's not working for you.
i did, it works now, but for some reason like every 4 hours it will not connect even rebooting several times, i end up deleting the connection settings and end up redoing them and rebooting a couple times to get it to work, my suspsicions are starting to fall on the rom image that im using, maybe skewring them up, the Rom i am using is the latest ATT rom WM 2003 that i made in the kitchen, so later on today i guess i will have to try the t-mo rom and see is that is giving me problems, (Evidently the night i did try to connect the GPRS network was down) and yes i did try with another phone i have a 3650 at my fingertips from Cingular to try. 8)
hi all my first post so take it easy on me  As above really I have tried everything I can find to set this up but have had no success only had the xda1 a few days so I am a little green with it.I know that the sim is gprs enabled because i had it working on my previos phone have tried help from vodafone that dont want to know because of it being an O2 phone all help appreciated please

Domain name not rqd
That should do it but not sure if you have to get it sorted also with Vodafone.
Tried it but it comes up with cant find the serial port name any suggestions vodafone emailed me last week said everything is switched on so I have ran out of ideas.

This is what I did;
1 Start / Settings / Connections Tab / Connections / Tasks / My ISP / Add new connection / Enter a name - Type whatever you want to call the connection, / Select a modem - scroll down to Cellular Line (GPRS) / Next / AccessPoint Name - internet / User Name - web / Password - web / Advanced button - check Use server-assigned IP address / Ok / Finish.
Try this it worked for me straight away http://www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp?code=108654&thread=31&man=IMATE
extract from the forum
OK got it now, after speaking to a very nice lady at Vodafone!
For GPRS internet connection for UK Vodafone sim cards, there are two categories: Pay as you Talk and Contract
Navigate to the usual screen: Start>Setting>Connections>Connections>
Add a New Modem to My ISP (use Cellular Line (GPRS)
For CONTRACT:
- APN: internet (lowercase)
- User: web (lowercase)
- Pwd: web (lowercase)
For PAY AS YOU TALK
- APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk(lowercase)
- User: web (lowercase)
- Pwd: web (lowercase)
leave anything else blank!
For me, what I was getting wrong was using APN: internet instead of pp.vodafone.co.uk!
Hope this clarifies the issue!

Cheers guys got oi working now dont know why, all this is exactly what I did before go figure!! now how do I get my email
Okay, I updated my firmware on my PSV-M3100 to the one here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281146
And all works fine in terms of day to day usage of the PDA, but when trying to access WAP or the internet via 3G or GPRS I'm getting errors saying the connection needs editing.
Would someone running the default UK Orange firmware be kind enough to post the connection settings that come with the SPV-M3100 as standard.
I even called Orange to help but "the guy who knows the SPV-M3100 has gone home for the day" not that it is a M3100 issue, just any old Orange 3G settings I imagine?
Anyway, any help on this would be appreciated.
I have tried searching here and the net for what should be in the connections area but very little info is out there
maybe this can help:
http://www.pda-friendly.net/PDA_GPRS_Settings.htm
Thanks, but I was looking for something a bit more thorough...
Settings for Orange World, Orange Internet, Orange MMS
And then the connection settings for GPRS/3G under these
Plus proxies etc.
Still, I am meant to have Orange calling me back today to help me out here, so whatever they tell me I'll document here for the Wiki.
Cheers
ok, i don't know if there's any cab available with all the settings, but a quick search on the networking forum poped up this which also contains MMS settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=224183
Thanks for those...
Orange are baffled and now my phone number is not recognised by Orange World at all, and I can't see any website sites...
I'll give them 24 hours more to fix or I cancel my contract (it'll be my 3rd SPV M3100 in 10 days - must be a record).
...at least I can get a 3G connection without it bombing out, even though I can't do anything with it.
Sweet! Those settings worked perfectly on my Orange UK M3100, just as they have on all my other devices. Shame there isnt a cab that can do the same!
Cheers,
Fin
Are these of any help?
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Hi There,
Just to let you know, you can get the settings straight from the Orange UK website. Just create a free account based on your billing and phone number, and there will be a section for them to either SMS you the settings to your M3100 or for you to stick them in yourself.
I recently put on WM6 onto my M3100, and just put the orange wap setting. Even though there are originally about 3 or 4 different gprs settings on the M3100, the only one that really ever is used is the orangewap access point settings. The orangeinternet access point settings are never touched when the M3100 3G access is taking place.
FYI from the orange site under 3G Setup for M3100:
Setting up the data account
1. On the PDA, tap on Start and then Settings.
2. Tap on the Connections tab.
3. Tap on the Connections icon.
4. Tap on the Advanced tab.
5. Tap on Select Networks.
6. Under the first drop down box, tap on New…
7. In the Enter a name for these settings: field, enter Orange GPRS WAP
8. Tap on the Modem tab.
9. Tap on New…
10. In the Enter a name for the connection: field, enter Orange GPRS WAP
11. Tap on the Select a modem drop-down list and select Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G).
12. Tap on Next.
13. In the Access point name: field, enter orangewap
14. Tap on Next.
15. Tap on Finish.
16. Tap on the Proxy Settings tab.
17. Select the This network connects to the Internet option.
18. Select the This network uses a proxy sever to connect to the Internet option.
19. Tap on Advanced… Tap on WAP.
20. In the Server field, enter 192.168.071.035
21. In the Port field, enter 8080
22. Tap on ok five times
23. Tap on x to close the Settings screen.
24. Tap on Start, Programs and then Internet Explorer.
25. Tap on Menu.
26. Tap on Favorites...
27. Tap on the Add / Delete tab.
28. Tap on Add...
29. In the Name field, enter Orange GPRS WAP
30. In the Address field, enter http://wap.orange.co.uk
31. Tap on Add.
32. Tap on ok.
33. Tap on x.
The new WAP profile is now configured and ready for use.
I did everything apart from Step 21, whereby when I wrote my settings down, the port number remained at 9201, NOT 8080 as written in step 21.
Give this a go, and see if it works for you.
Good Luck!
if you're on contract, the accesspoint is orangeinternet no password, nothing.

I have created a cab file that will install Orange UK internet, WAP and MMS settings to make things a little easier!
Hi,
I have upgraded to 20070320_RUU_Hermes_WWE_3.23.0.0_1.34.00.10 on my M3100 which works great except for the 3G connection. To configure the device I used the 'Orange Internet MMS Settings.cab'.
Once the Direct push is configured for my exchange server, the device downloads emails. The device then drops the 3G/GPRS connection and the activesync screen shows error with No connection for data.
Looking into the xml files saved from the original Orange ROM shows extra settings that do not appear in the 'Orange Internet MMS Settings.cab' file.
Has anyone else seen this issue or have more info on Orange 3G settings?
Many Thanks
Crammy
I've flashed my phone with this WM6 ROM as well. Has your SPV M3100 stopped receiving/sending MMS's ?? I've checked and re-checked my phones MMS settings a dozen times and also had orange send them to my phone cia SMS but no joy. I wonder if it is just me or a common problem with the new WM6 ROM's and the M3100?
Mine works fine.
As long as you set up the MMS data connection AND the mms server correctly, yours will as well.
There are hundreds of threads here and elsewhere with the correct way - but the key is to set up an ORANGEMMS connection in the "private" connection settings (with user Orange, password Multimedia and APN as orangemms, then set up Orange MMS server in MMS settings with Gateway IP (proxy) address: 192.168.224.10 , Port: 9201, MMS Message (Relay) Server URL http://mms.orange.co.uk/

Looks like we are having a double conversation here!! Anyway. I have deleted my original MMS settings as these were set up in the "internet" connection, not the "private" connection as you advise. I have used exactly the setting you show above but when I try to send an MMS I can't and I just get the timer symbol showing they cannot currently be sent. I'm really at a dead end hear unless you have any other ideas?? I really appreciate you taking the time out to help though.

The browser is probably not returning the correct user-agent string. Unfortunatly the operators decided to use autodetection via this string. Its a right pain because i cant access the o2 pda site either, i get the crappy wap text version
I believe the gurus are investigating it. What ROM are you currently running?

MMS Settings not working
Thanks for the settings. I still can't get the MMS working on my TyTn on 3 Ireland network.
These are the settings I'm using:
MMS Server: "3MMS"
Gateway: 217.171.129.2
Port: 8799
Server address: http://mms.um.ireland.ie:10021/mmsc
Connect via: "My ISP"
Sending size: 300K
WAP Version: 2.0
Connect Using: "My ISP"
"My ISP" Settings:
Modem:
3
Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
APN: 3ireland.ie
Proxy:
Nothing checked
Also, has anyone got Planet3 and services working for 3 Ireland?
check your mms apn it 3ireland.ie not ireland.ie,ive been using mms for 3 weeks now no worries with the posted setings.i can log onto the 3 web site,my 3 etc 3 mail is a bit of a pig as it is not tytn friendly, internet is proving a stumbler as i cant navigate away from 3 and cant download mail over gprs, there may be a proxy or port that need sopenong alternatively a slight change in the apn may be required.keep looking
Duh, got it now... Thanks stevieboy.
Server address should be: http://mms.um.3ireland.ie:10021/mmsc, dunno how I missed the 3 when putting that in...
I can access the internet and use exchange active sync and windows live over the 3 connection, I've got a mobile broadband bundle and it is working fine.
Some of the links of the 3 internet aren't working (complaining about incorrect handset, I've tried updating the User Agent string without any joy) and streaming media isn't working at all, comes up with a 'Failed to find network' message, but according to the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=313961 there is nothing that can be done about that.
ive managed to snarf a copy of the australian dopod wm6 upgrade pack for three AU. flashing your tytn/hermes would brand it as a three phone and i suspect open up the streaming and wider web access, but might be a bit limited in scope other wise ,i,ll atempt to extract the relevant bits and post back with results
so then i flashed the phone with the dopod AU rom, repackaged first as it wont work if you've oli'd your phone.made a note of the USER AGENT and had a good look around, some specific network stuff in the rom area but nothing to get excited over.reflased the phone with new rom and inputed the UA and bingo, full internet with working links from the 3 site, very few "not available on this handset" etc,pop mail etc all good.maybe i got lucky and dont realise it but who gives a fu.....
heres the UA...ppc;240x320:/E1000/mozilla/4.0.
the E1000 was my idea instead of dopod 838pro as the e1000 is supported by 3 here in eire, ive kept 'mise and compatible out of it as nothing else seemed to work.
anyway by accident or design this has worked for me and i'd be keen to see if anyone else can make a go of it
I haven't changed the UA string at all and EAS, POP3 and most internet sites work fine off the bat.
i got all 3 services working

have downloaded the.CAB file so I can surf away but mobile.three.co.uk does not work as my homepage ?
worked fine on my Universal ??
any direction/help welcome
great site by the way everyone !
mobile.three.co.uk doesn't work on the Universal any more either, three have changed something and now you just get a blank page
If you have them bookmarked, you can still get to My3, Free to watch, Current spend, etc. but not "Today on 3" or Services.
If anyone has a solution, please post it.
found this elsewhere but it may be of help to you
" HTC TyTN 2 and XDA Stellar etc.

Server Name: 3 MMS

Connect Via: The Internet
Send Limit: 300k
Wap Version: WAP 2.0
When done send yourself a piccy to test. Mine works fine with the above on 3"
The connections work fine, the problem is that we cannot access planet 3 (the 3 online 'walled garden'). I'm pretty sure the problem is that the phone is not supported, and is being blocked. The old method for changing the user agent with the registry doesn't work for WM6 or later versions of WM5 - you can add a value to HKLM/Security/Internet Explorer/... but this only appends a value to the user agent string, you cannot change the start of the string using this method.
I've heard it's possible if you edit browser.dll perhaps? Is there a guide for this? Or does anyone know a better way, perhaps with a (WM6-friendly) PIE add-on?
