Hi everyone,
Here is the problem:
Every now and then, my XDA II cannot send an SMS
(nothing happens when click on SEND).
Settings-Phone also cannot be accessed.
To remedy this, I have to either
- Turn OFF and ON the flight mode
- or soft reset
My ROM is 1.66.00WWE
Radio 1.08.00
I cannot find the cause of this.
I have NO other software installed.
Once I tried to click on many places to try to get out of this problem
but it just went into HARD reset.
Anyone has a fix to this? Much appreciated
I had the same problem. That sometimes I had to softreset to get SMS to work.
Now I have recently upgraded to ROM 1.72 and I haven't had the problem since, BUT it is not so long ago that I upgraded, so I cannot say that the problem absolutly has gone away.
I have the same problem on 1.72 ROM on a clean device (after HR, no progs installed). But this happens rather infrequently.
I have the same problem your sms is kept in the Draft folder and after a soft reset you can go into Drafts and resend. inconvenient yes, but not much trouble.
hi, also had that problem! But it's working now!

Bummer, just got the same error state. So an upgrade to 1.72 does not work. Sorry.
Cannot send sms bug fix
I think the problem is Ia_caller_id.exe notification
This bug is described in
http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/ppc_cn_overview.html
I have installed their free fix yesteday and I have not
had the problem yet.
If anyone has similar success with it, let me know
I got a serious problem with this rom.
My xda2 hanged (can't switch on) twice and hard reset when I plugged the power supply.
Anybody had the same terrible experience.....
I suspected it's the bluetooth problem cause I started using my bluetooth headset again last few days....but not sure....anybody got some clue????
Cheers,
Chris
After upgrading to this .187 O2 ROM, My XDA II is really slow all over the place. I deleted the O2 Active User Interface thing and that seemed to stop it from being slow when turning it on and off.
Yeah, happenned to me too... hard reset twice in 2 days!!...just after upgrade to this rom...
My xdaii just didn't react to anything, not even the power button, so i did a soft reset... but it did a hard reset instead :s.
after that i changed to a belgian ROM (1.72 too) BUT kept the radio from the O2... and i wasn't able to send/receive sms after that, so i completeley installed the belgian rom to get rid of the O2 one.
see my post about it here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=12656
EDIT : looks like other people have a proble with the ON/OFF button under this rom... http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=12690 :| [/url]
The issue of the Xda II not responding to anything but hard reset happened to me two or three times, but I was on 1.60.44WWE.
The first time, I reinstalled almost everything to see if a particular program crashed the unit.
The second time, I narrowed it down to GPRS Tweak ... but still it happened.
The last time, I took out a program called SpaceReclaimer, that clears away cached & temporary files ... and this time, perhaps it was pure luck but the problem hasn't occurred since, it's been more than 6 months now.
I have no solutions, but just to share my experience and compare notes, perhaps the new ROM came with an app which messes with system files in background and causes this to happen. Well, at least that's what I suspected what happened to mine as I remember using SpaceReclaimer quite often before those hard resets.
Hi all,
I was wondering whether you have installed any program after the ROM upgrade or not? Coz I have no problem with my customized .187 ROM at all (what I have removed all UK O2 CABs, put some HK and AUS network settings and edited the config.txt). It works like a charm! The only 2 possible reasons I can think of for your problem would be 1) program(s) installed after ROM upgrade or 2) ROM is not correctly customized/upgraded. If worst comes to worst, phone is still messing up, try to do a SD-card ROM recover and redo the upgrade.
Hope my opinions can give you guys some hints on how to fix the problem.
Cheers!
Now that the honeymoon period is over I have started noticing a few problems with the JJ. The most serious I noted is that when the JJ has gone through some use after its last soft reset it tends to freeze when a new text message arrives in the in-box. This does not happen when the JJ has been freshly soft reset and only when some time has passed since it was last soft reset. Since I have set the unit to vibrating alert on receipt of a new message the vibrator continuously starts operating and the phone freezes. To stop the vibrator you need to do a soft reset again.
Anybody had this problem??? I am planning to do a hard reset and see what happens.
Regards
Definitely related to some software that you have installed. I use sms everyday and havent faced any such problem.
Yes it does freezes your device when you receive new SMS, some time even I lost the SMS which was coming tru,..
Once I lost the MMS Account itself, then had to go for softreset and got it back again...
I've had the same thing happening. Very annoying. That's just Microsoft as we know it. We can't get out of the habbit of frequent softresets.
I did a complete ROM upgrade today and I replaced the Arabic ROM which came preinstalled on my JJ with the english version as available at the clubimate site. Without installing any 3rd party software I tested the SMS freezing problem and unfortunately it is very much there. This at least proves that no 3rd party software is to blame for this.
Now I am thinking that maybe I will have to dispose of the JJ as I so much depend on text messaging. The worst part is that as the JJ freezes on arrival of a new SMS the message itself is also lost and after doing the soft reset you can never tell from whom the message was.
I will really appreciate if anyone can help
Kind Regards

If you have an SD card inserted try removing it and see if the problem persist.
What i dont get is why this problem is unique to a very small percentage of devices. Many of use the device for SMS quite frequently and dont face this problem. I wonder what the triggering factor is.

I have this problem since I updated my ROM.
I posted this a few days back that the Jasjar tends to hang not all the time but most of the time when a new SMS arrives and in fact the SMS is also lost when you recover after a soft reset.
I thought that I will re-post this question because now more users would have had more experience with their Jasjars. For me this problem does not seem to go. I have tried even a hard reset and the problem keeps coming back even with no third party software installed.
I shall be obliged if anyone else who has had this problem may kindly post his views because this may put some pressure on the people at i-mate to come up with a fix. I fear that since this problem is being faced by a very small minority of JJ users a fix may never see the light of the day.
Kind Regards
I have a himalaya device with WM5 and have the exact same 'sms-lockup' problem.
Also, somethimes all the incoming calls are forwarded to my voicemail, even when my phone ison and the signal is strong and im not using my device. This can only be solved by a reset or after i made a call myself. Till that time no-one could call me!
The problems started when i installed another WM5-rom and a new radio-rom( 1.18 ). This was the first time a upgraded the radio-rom, so i think this could be the problem.
Im going to install the older radio-rom ver1.08 (recommanded in combi with WM5 by buzzdef.net). I hope this solves it!
I to have the same problem... Every time you open a new text message or even after sending message and when you get delivery report it freezes and you will have to reset.. but if you are in the middle of a call the phone still works fine but not able to use the PDA part because its freeze...
Have installed another, older, radio-rom( 1.08 ) and used it for almost a week... no freezes sofar!! I dont know if this rom can be used for a Universal device...
Just uncheck the "turn off device after..." option in battery settings and this problem will go away.
This was pointed out by user Khaled in another thread.
im also experiencing this after i upgraded to Second Edition. my Himalaya tends to freeze when receiving SMS. applications starts to slow down but will eventually recover after the SMS receipt notification, no need for softresets. i also noticed that currently, it would take about 10 seconds before SMS notification appears in the screen. im sure about this because i would know that an SMS is coming because my computer monitor, adjacent to my XDA, would flicker. so the turn-around time from the flickering of the monitor to the SMS notification would last around 10-12 seconds. is this normal?
I was so fed up with the SMS freezing problem that I sold my Jasjar, albeit at a much loss and exchanged it for a new one.
Just my bad luck the problem is also there on my 2nd Jasjar. It is exactly the same as the one I have sold. When I get a new SMS the unit freezes and has to be soft reset. Please note that this does not happen every time but say 1 in 10 times. Anyways this makes the whole system very unreliable. When your phone is in your pocket and an SMS causes it to freeze you will never know if now somebody tries to make an urgent call because your unit is not responding.
I have also tried the remedy / fix mentioned in this fourm to to Uncheck Turn Off Device but does not work.
My only hope is that this problem is fixed in the next ROM upgrade.
In the meantime I am evaluating prospects of leaving the WM platform altogether and going for a Nokia 9500
a friend just adviced me that it was my Radio version that is causing the problem. 1.18 has a lot of bugs including this freezing issue. so he suggested that i reflash my ROM and go back to Radio version 1.17. could somebody point me where the bug issues of 1.18 are listed here in the forum? thanks
Hi,
i know this has came up alot, i was just wondering if anyone has found a fix for the xda exec crashing when a text is recieved. This does not happen to me often but it does happen and is quite annoying as the text is lost sometimes.
Also i find that sometimes when i leave my phone closed in clam shell mode overnight i wake up and open the phone but it seemed to be crashed. There was one night when my girlfriend sent me 3 txts during that night and she got delivery reports saying they were delivered, once i turnt my phone on in the morning it was frozen and i had to soft reset but didnt get any of her txts. Im now trialling to leave the phone on in standard pda mpde (screen facing out) overnight to see if it happens this way or not.
Michael
p.s: im using the standard rom that came with the phone
rom: 1.13.48
radio: 1.04.02
protocol: 42.37.P8
Yes the problem is very much there still. I have been using the Jasjar for almost 3 months now. During these 3 months this is my 2nd Jasjar and the problem is on both my units.
The chances of SMS freezing the Jasjar is more likely when the available RAM is below 17 MB. So what I am doing to reduces chances of this happening is to soft reset when the available RAM is below 18 MB. However this is still no gaurantee though it does reduce the chances of the Jasjar freezing upon receiving a text message.
This is a very annoying problem as this makes the whole thing so unreliable. You will never know that a text message has come through and caused your Jasjar to freeze till you need to use your phone again, and if during this period someone tries to contact you his call will not get through.
May I also mention that a few days back I also upgraded my Jasjar with the O2 ROM but the problem was still there. Furthermore I am convinced that this problem is not being caused by any 3rd party software. I can say so with confidence because I have hard rest several times and found the problem to be there even when no third party software was installed.
My only hope is now a ROM upgrade which I heard is due in December. I this does not solve the problem at least for me I can say that I am quitting and the Nokia 9500 will be my next phone.
Regards
@mho,
which mode are you using. I had the SMS freezing problem with my JJ but with my Exec in Corporate mode I have not suffered this. However, I have noticed that since I downloaded the latest ROM from the O2 my Exec is less stable then with the original ROM!
i am using the corporate mode, its mroe stable than the basic mode but upon recieving ssm it still crashes.
i think im going to call o2 today and ask them to change my phone. I thinking of samsung sgh-i300 now.
such a shame cos i really like the exec, if i didnt need a reliable txt function so much i wouldnt really care about it.
When I tried the O2 ROM on my i-mate Jasjar I also opted for the corporate mode and this still did not solve the text message freeing problem. I therefore shifted back to the original i-mate Jasjar ROM
Regards
Did you guys have Pocket Informant or TCMP + ffdshow/ac3 codec pack installed by any chance?
My SMS was perfectly fine until yesterday I installed the above, and upon receiving an SMS my exec (corp) hung...
Hard resetting now...

I have TCMP installed and running on the original corporate ROM and NEVER had the crash upon receiving SMS.
When I had my JJ I did get the freezing problem with receipt of a SMS - but I was also using Pocket Informant. On my Exec on Corp mode I don't use Pocket Informant but use Agenda Fusion and have never suffered the SMS issue. Looks like it could be a third-party app (I also may have used a Today screen plug-in on my JJ, which I don't use anymore) causing the SMS problem.
OK this is starting to peeve me..... hard reset, didn't install TCMP, only installed PI trial and SMS hang issue is back...argh!
no, i had no 3rd party apps and it still hung. I think someelse also didnt have any 3rd party apps and had this problem too.
thx mho... I'll test it out for a day or two more and if it still hangs I'm calling O2. I have a suspicion that it's an issue to do with the memory leaks, probably due to filehandles not being closed when accessing an SD card with LOTS of files in it.
Happening again after being ok for 2 days... calling O2 today...
Yes it is true... I am having same prob too... Even after hardreset without any 3rd party applications, after a while after softreset, my phone does freeze... Some time I am not even able to read the message.
Not sure how scientific this is - but I had the 'crash on SMS' quite a bit in the first week or so of using my Exec.
The first time it happened, I thought it might be to do with insufficient resources, so I regularly closed down background tasks and did occasional soft-resets to 'clean it up'. This didn't seem to make much difference.
HOWEVER, this week I've basically just made sure POutlook is actually running at all times, and I've not had a single problem.
When I fancy the old 'close all tasks' if I've got a load of apps running in the background - I just follow it with a swift press of the "envelope" button.
It SEEMS to be working!

Except I spoke too soon. Graaagh.
Came back to a flashing orange LED, opened up to see, and the thing had frozen.
doh!
I had the SMS freeze problem with my JJ now I only have it with email download over GPRS. Unfortunately a lot of Universal fans here don't think there are any problems with the Universal while the rest of us are trying to find workarounds. A bit annoying really.
It must be from the service provider, because someone already tested it after a hard reset with nothing installed and still getting these SMS freezes. It could also be the phone. It is hard to pinpoint because I don't see any Cingular-USA complaining of SMS freezing. As most Universal users are in the UK.
If it's any consolation.....happens to me once in a while too.....don't think it could be the network.....but maybe some O2 files??
no freeze but SMS just not received
see my post - only receiving some SMS - this is related to an XDA 2i
on O2 network
the more I trail this forum for SMS issues the more I am concerned that this is a serious bug with the phone.
I have done extensive troubleshooting on this and can confirm that it is a) not related to any loaded SW or backup, b) happening on nearly all XDA derivates to some extend, C) is mainly related to the unit trying to "wake up" (which is normal for SMS receive). Pattern seems to be that combined with a weak signal the XDA wakes up, looses network, re-aquires but the receive failed. The confirmation that the message was received is however already deliverd as the XDA woke up. I can re-create this behaviour at will now. If you send two messages within a short time frame the Second message only will be received. So it is definitely related to the unit waking up.
My XDA was with O2 for repair twice and no change in behaviour. they have agreed to exchange - but see above - form the posts here I think that it is a general problem with the unit
I am using the latest HTC ROM in the UK with Radio v. 1.03.03.10. When I restart the unit in the morning after switching the power off overnight the phone is off enough times to be a nuisance if I do not notice it. Occasionally it switches into flight mode when the unit is on as well, but this seems to be happening less frequently. I also sometimes have difficulty making outgoing calls, ie the call ends before even getting connected, and redialling will not work until I switch the phone off and back on again. Is anyone else having these problems? Is this an issue with the radio ROM? I have read about the difficulties with the latest Radio ROM upgrades on the forum, and if a Radio ROM upgrade would solve the problem I would appreciate some advice on the best one to go with for use primarily in Europe, with occasional travel to the US and Japan.
Hi, Sorry to hear about your issues, I and a couple others here have or had the problem with the phone being off/flightmode after turning it off, then back on.
Theres a another post about this somewhere..I was just too lazy to find it before I posted, and last I checked a true fix hadn't been found.
If I am correct it shouldn't occur if you only do a softreset, and if you look at your signal bars when you shut it off, it looks like it turns the phone/radio off during the shutdown process...that is normal I'm pretty sure, cause even when it worked correctly it still shut the phone off before a power off, I think the issue is related to the startup process and it isn't correctly turning it back on.
I have had it work fine for the longest, and then when I installed some software it quit, after the fresh installation of software it has worked again, also I notice if I power off the phone while its charging and then power it back on, it always works correctly.
I haven't had any actual incall/call issues myself I can't say if a Radio upgrade would help with that, but I don't suspect a radio only upgrade would help with the flight mode being on after a power down, but I am far from being positive, I think its installed software/ROM related, sorry I can't be of some real help, I'm dealing with it myself..its aggrivating to me, I have forgotten to turn flightmode off and missed calls for half a day untill I looked and noticed.
Start the improvement way by upgrading the Radio ROM
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
Here you can find the 1.20 ROM, extracted from JASJAM ROM. Try to install it on your device.
Tell me about this.
Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. Most helpful.
yes - i get that too - constantly (on a t-mob vario) - i get bumped off the network at least 5-10 times a day and it takes me anywhere between and 10 minutes to get back on. i also get bumped off systematically every night (i am always off when i get up).
calls too are a disaster - an average, it takes me 3 or 4 tries to complete a call when i have full network. (sometimes as much as 10-15 tries)
took my sim and put it into a magician and all went away, so *suppose* it could be a 3g thing, but i am really not convinced because the hermes does have a 2g radio as well (so it should fall back onto 2g whenever 3g fails...)
Not a Fix but a Working Solution
I started having the issue of the radio being off on startup a few weeks ago.
So I invested($10) in a copy of SK Softwares Scheduling Manager SKScheMa.
http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?skschema/m_skschema.html
This has a powerful scripting language and one of the script commands is "GPRS on"
I created a shortcut in the startup folder to a GPRS On script. and since then I have had no more problems.
i´ve the some problem, what do you do for no more problems ?¿?¿
thanks
Thanks for this. I will give it a try. Do you know by any chance if this also provides a way to have the phone ring through the speaker when it is connected to a Bluetooth headset?
>Thanks for this. I will give it a try. Do you know by any chance if this also provides a way to have the phone ring through the speaker when it is connected to a Bluetooth headset?<
If you are refering to SKSchema, then this should be possible. You can create a script that runs when a call is received.
The script can then instruct the phone to play a sound file.
We turned off the UMTS service and reverted back to GSM and that seems to have solved the issue.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
J.
Just a slight update to maybe help find the cause, I had created a backup with spb before the problem occurred (minus pim data and emails not sure if it mattered) and after having the problem arise again and a few other issues, I decided to hard reset and try out the backup I made.
After installing my backup the problem was gone, and then I got bored the other day and installed some software, and I think removed some, and I had it happen once again after I had ran memmaid 1.72 and rebooted.
I don't know if it the software installaions that are causing it..but one thing that has been a constant is the memmaid, and it could even be my fault.
Is anyone having this happen to a basically oem device?

Well, I can't exacly tell why but I get the same feeling about extra software.
After a hardreset or ROM upgrate (now Cing 1.34/radio 1.16) everything's fine. I deactivate ActiveSync and install some extra software (PocketZenPhone, Total Commander, Regedit, TomTom). After a few days still everything's fine. So I install some other software (SPB PocketPlus, Jetware, a today- and phoneskin) and still everything's fine for a few days. But then on a (not so) fine day: it hangs! The phone doesn't react or TomTom is hanging on the startup screen or the whole device is freezing. Why? I don't know, softreset and everythings fine for a few days.
I notices a few situations while it happened: first when I connected the carpower adapter and second a few times while receiving a phonecall (in my carkit and on poweroff).
Uninstalling everything doesn't seem to do the trick: it still hangs now and then. Also I dont have the patience to hardreset and use my device clean, without extra programs for a few weeks. But I guess in that case everything would be ok (?). But a device without the extra's has no use to me...
My feeling is that the installing the extra's causes a instability in the registry or elsewhere. I also have the feeling that the hardware causes certain instability: the gliding keyboard, the screen (alignmentproblems), the buttons, the SD-card, the network cards, bluetooth... (I had my device in repair with HCT because of the too easy gliding keyboard, the stylus, and the instability with TomTom, but those problems are solverd for now, exept for TomTom). So much hardware, so much software, all in one small device...
A small addition to my previous post: I think another possible cause for instability are the famous memoryleaks. Starting and stopping programs in my opinion never clears the whole memory, in spite of "real" programstoppers like SPB PocketPlus. After working a few days this could cause a freeze (?)
