Anyone using x-series from 3 UK on their universal. If so what are the settings for the internet and how does skype work on 3 ? Do you just download Skype for Mobile?

As far as i know, Skype on x-series is a different proposition altogether from Skype for Windows Mobile. The two applications are different. Skype on x-series works over the GSM network so you can make and receive Skype calls anywhere in return for a small monthly fee to 3 (i think it's £5?). Skype for WM on the other hand works for free over WiFi (like the PC version) or over a 3G cellular connection if you have one (beware using it on 3G without an unlimited data plan though). You can download Skype for WM free directly from the Skype website.
I don't believe the x-series application would execute on the Universal as i imagine it was designed specifically for Symbian OS but i may be wrong. Let me know if you find otherwise

I have just added x series silver to my 3 contract and using it to surf internet and skype on my XDA Exec without any problem.
You would have been able to do this before as 3 allows full access now, the thing to be careful of, is do the applications on the X Series use a special proxy to differentiate between the plan you have purchased, and full open internet access.

I was able to use Skype before 3 activated x series, but I wasn't able to browse the internet apart from mobile.three.co.uk.
Everytime I typed in a web address (ie news.bbc.co.uk), I used to get the message ' You can only use this service on a 3 handset' or something similar to this. Now all websites work fine.
Also, if I was being charged for data, would this show up on 'Amount Spend' section of My 3? Anyone know?

my new provider offers a GPRS flatrate and I wonder if there is a tool to make IP telephony (for international calls) possible.
Does anybody know a company which offers that kind of service for PPCs? Or is there a kind of workaround to use this service from XDAII via GPRS?
I've been using Net2phone and Webphone before, I think it is impossible to convert and run their access programs on PPC. So maybe there is a way?!

You can use Net2Phone and other VOIP services on the Pocket PC...simply download either X Lite, X Pro or SJPhone and set them up to use the Net2Phone servers. Or you could just download the already-set FWD Pocket PC client from www.fwd.pulver.com. Voice quality over GPRS may not be all that good though...

I'd love to hear otherwise, but I don't think this could work at all. VoIP requires a consistent 17k data transfer with little loss and low latency (under 225ms). All my testing points to about 1000-1400ms latency and heavy packet loss, often greater than 50%. This is part of the design of GPRS; using "spare" data space so that the voice calls are always clear.
Hello all Ive just ordered my universal on Orange, for delivery tomorrow, they are giving it to me for free on upgrade.
So now because I often use over my monthly minute allowance and having a few friends around the world I would like to use a VOIP service.
The only one I know of is Skype, as I am fairly new to this type of thing. So can anyone recommed a service that is cheap, easy to use, Universal compatible.
As for call costs I would like a service that is fairly cheap to call both landlines and mobiles. The mobiles would only really be in the UK, if that matters.

I expect you've seen my post elsewhere asking about voip clients for the Universal. I've lived and breathed voip for the last three months at work so I know something about it...there seems to be three basic kinds of voip services:
1) wholly proprietory services - closed source client and protocols. Skype is the perfect example. Will let 'real' phone users dial you (they call that 'Skype in') on a real phone number, and will let you call 'real' phones (they call that 'Skype out') for a fee. For Skype, there's a client for the Universal (I think, I don't own one yet). Other services - you're probably out of luck.
2) semi-proprietory services - perhaps providing their own client software, but built on open protocols (usually SIP, session initiation protocol), so you get an enhanced experience with their client. Often the client is locked to only talk to their servers. Examples would be Gizmo or Wengo. Could be an option for a Universal user if you find one that works with other clients than their own, AND if there's a generic SIP client that works on WM5 - and according to my thread, Xten's PPC client works ok.
3) standards-based services - client-agnostic, built on open-protocols (again usually SIP). They give you a username and server details, you enter them into your client - be it a PC-based softphone, a pocketpc application, or a piece of hardware such as an ATA (analogue telephone adaptor - let's you plug a physical phone, even a cordless one, into your home network and use it to make VOIP calls).
There's a fair few voip services like this nowadays, either companies who 'only' do that, or voip services as addons to a traditional ISP service - that's the case with my company, PlusNet, which offers a voip service to our broadband customers. You get sip to sip calls free, a free 0845 number to receive calls on, and you can choose from three different ways to pay for outbound calls - either PAYG (buy credit in £5 blocks, use it up as you make calls) or subscription ('Anytime' or 'Evenings and Weekends' - pay a monthly subscription and get a block of minutes to use peak or off-peak respectively). what if you use a BT headset like the JABRA? will the sound be routed to the the BT headset or to the external speaker?

I use plusnet and love it and use the voip sevice to call landlines (free) from my laptop but I would love to know how to use my vario to do it. I presume I would do it via wifi through the broadband but dont know how. Please tell me if you can - thanks. I do have unlimited gprs but I would assume that I couldnt use plusnet this way as it is not broadband etc.

OK so I am new here, but I am not new to mobile devices at all. In fact I was a Mobility Admin in different forums. So please don't get mad at me for posting here. I have some questions. PLEASE don't play the FLAME the noob game. I swear that I searched far and Wide for my answers but have failed to find them.
So my question: is there anyway to tweak the T-Mobile T-zones Internet?
I can:
Connect to the internet
Download Files
Stream Music (orb)
Stream Video (badly[orb])
Use Google Maps
I can't:
Connect To IM servers, I have tried all of the programs. OZ for T-Mo is the only one that works, but it's horrible.
No YouTube, I can live without this but I hope to get it working.
MIDP can't connect.
Basicly nothing, that doesn't connect from, IE works.

I have played with the Proxy settings and nothing. I know that with my Treo 650 I could connect through VeriChat, but I can't connect on WM6.
Is there a program out there that can help me fix this?

I do not have an obvious solution but have also seen plenty of similar comments here from others - not just with T-Mobile either. I am using T-Mobile in the UK and have none of your problems.
I obviously had the original T-Mobile Vario II build (WM5) but now have the Black MAJIK build with WM6 and all has been fine with both. Some people directly accuse T-Mobile of blocking their IM, but I have no issue with it - albeit I use it rarely. Of course it "may" be that T-mobile are indeed blocking some services to 'offenders' (IM is not allowed) but I wonder if their system is that capable.
Obvious questions for you are: what OS are you using? Have you changed ANY comms settings from the original T-Mobile build? Have you tried a hard reset to restore original settings (including the all important T-Mobile extended ROM)?
If you still have the original OS ROM build running then you might try installing the configuration .cab files that are stored on the Extended ROM separately - some apply directly to such device settings. Access to that Extended ROM on the WM5 build is easy and you just need an application such as "HTweakC 2.0" (available here). Of course, and as ever, start with backing-up your device - but you will know that.

I have setup the internet (GPRS) settins like they are suppose to be.
I believe that it is a fact that T-Mo has blocked ports, and has only left http smtp and pop3 open. So my dilema is why did verichat connect on my Treo 650 and not on my MDA or my 8525.

if you are in tmo usa then you can't
if you have the proxies 216.155.165.50:8080 the most you can use is PIE (pocket internet explorer)
the best thing is to get the blackberry $20 dollar add-on plan and just setup without proxys. wap.voicestream.com and you have full internet access.
I am in the USA, and I have the T-zona 5.99 plan.
I am less than reluctant to close my mind for this not to work, since google maps works. and, as I said, on my Treo 650 using verichat worked perfectly.
I don't know what the difference in the way the Treo 650 connected and the way my 8525 connects.
Perhaps the programs that can connect are ones that ones that connect through port 80 and are proxied to 8080.
I am so lost on this topic though.

I think the question is valid. I have had a PDA for years and have moved through different version of device and OS. I love the features you get (including stylus/touchdrive screen) the ability to add many applications/themes and even upgrade to new roms etc not to mention Tomtom/GPS and push email from exchange.
I love the exchange push but my company are against it as they have been blackberry for a while and are worried about security/viruses and control of devices.
I recently was given a Blackberry from work which just turns out to be a basic phone with email...they work great but i cannot do much else. I have no memory expansion, MP3 player, not much decent addon applications, rubbish themes and no touch screen.
I would love to take the sim with its data tariff and put it in my Wizard or Universal or even my old XDA2 and use it for the blackberry service. I cant use it for excahnge push a it is disabled at the corporate end and if it was available would cost a fortune as the blackberry GPRS tariff charges extra for any data not going over blackberry.
I am stuck with 2 devices where I would dearly like to have one. That one would not be a blackberry but a fantastic WM6, touch screen, Satnav, Audio player, Camera, media viewer, media streamer from my home PC, media streamer from the internet over Wifi or GPRS, web browser, bluetooth stereo headset, voice dialing.....oh, and email from blackberry connect with my company SIM would be nice.
I think I am getting a bit bitter about this.........Sorry for the rant....I realy want Blackberry Connect V4 on my wizard.

HTC Mail is no good for me as it costs money. My company wants to give me a Blackberry but, like OhtwoXCDA2, I want a 'real' device. So, I'm hoping that the free BB Connect will allow me to get mail from my corporate Blackberry Enterprise Server to the Polaris.
And, to answer my own post, a friend who knows about this stuff assures me that you can simply install BB Connect on a WM6 device, enter the PIN fom the BES and everything will be rosey.
Confirmation from anyone else would be nice.

Blackberry Mobile definitely works with the Kaiser, so I can't see any reason (by looking at the specification comparison to the Polaris) why it would not work on the Polaris.

im currently using a HTC Kaiser, and am able to browse the internet fully, use msn etc, but I cannot get onto the 3UK mobile homepage, just the full one which takes up loads of data allowance. I suppose this applies to all smartphones but what is the 3 homepage for smartphones? I need it so I can check my usage etc.
