I was playing with my friends Atom the other night (and I have one on order myself) and I wanted to see how the bluetooth worked. So, I used a bluetooth adapter on a computer to become a stereo receiver for the Atom. While I had no problems getting the device working, the quality seemed outragiously bad. I was playing an MP3 in Windows Media Player, and the sound played over bluetooth sounded as if it had a high pitched squeel over it the whole time. With this kind of quality, I question being able to use a set of bluetooth headphones with the Atom. The quality was not a problem in the MP3, and it sounded find out of the Atoms speakers. Was I having some other problem, or is bluetooth stereo sound just this bad?
On mine it sounds better on BT stereo than thru' speakers  Maybe your pc corrupted the soundz
Well, I suppose "better" could be rather subjective. But when using the PC as a stereo speaker it sounded bad. I imagine with that kind of sound on headphones, my head would explode out of sheer pain. I'm certainly willing to accept that my PC bluetooth software could be causing problems, but I'd like to hear what others think before purchasing a set of bluetooth headphones. I would be describe what I heard as if it had been overcompressed sound with horrible high pitched artifacts. Would you say that the actual sound being sent to your headphones was phonically the same, ignoring the quality of speaker vs headphones?
Remember "Garbage in Garbage out"
The same MP3 played on the computer it's being transfered to via bluetooth (and therefore the same speakers) sounds perfect. What I'm wondering is if bluetooth stereo quality is as bad as I've just experianced, or if it was something outside the normal "headphone" system that was causing this (such as poor receiving software).
Fortunately tonight while browsing the forums I came across the following,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=54621
This completely cleared up my sound quality issues. Sounds like what I'd expect now. Hope this helps someone else.
Tell me. Which settings did you apply? All or some of them. There are so many inputs you cannot even know ehich is which
I changed only Bitrate:
Bitrate 53 increased the frequency of breaks to almost one every 5 seconds. My original was the default 30 which was just fine at less than once every 2-3 minutes.
Am currently testing 35. Hissing is gone, but the ocassional cut is still there @ once every 2 minutes.
Load Music, connect the earphone and the output sount quality is pathetic/worse even compare to the XDA ATOM/Exec or for that matter any other WM device I owned in past. On the other side the speaker output quality is still OK. The sound through the earphone ecos..sometimeit the voice goes low and instruments are high... normally this happens when you switch on the 3D surround on other devices like samsung Innov8. But the in X1 the quality is worse.. I even took it to the sony service they reloaded the ROM a fresh but the problems still remains. IS IT THE ACCEPTED SOUND QUALITY FROM X1. How about other owners .. do they get better sound output/quality through earphone. Is there anything I am doing wrong, Kindly suggest.
really? i find the music quality more than good enough. what headphones are you using?
The Headphone quality is f*cking good!!! I havn't heard this kinda bass on my I-Mate Jam or HTC TyTN II.
One thing is correct, the quality of the original earpieces is bad.
I got ones from creative. The one that go into you're ear.
The speaker quality..... Don't talk about it. Hate it
I'm using Sennheiser CX400 earphones and the sound quality is actually better than my iPod 5g.

The headphones supplied with this phone are suprisingly high quality ones. I have my own Phillips branded ones however.
Aside from the headphones, I think you issue is with the software you use. I found that WMPlayer is pretty crap when it comes to playing my favourite tracks. I use PocketPlayer and also Pocket Music, which have some very good equaliser functions. They make a big difference.
I also find the sound quality f*cking good!!
I expected the worse because it's a WM device, but it exceeded my expectations. Also using Creative ear-ins (EP-630)
I think there is a bug in the Sony Media Player software that can result in a seemingly poor quality sound output.
I've found that when opening the media player for the first time and playing a track the soundstage of the music sounds like its collapsed (lacking any high end or openess in the stereo image). If you then tap pause and then play again all of a sudden the soundstage opens out and the sound quality is very good.
Since I've turned on the "clicking" noise for screen taps, the above bug doesn't occur so often.
However, if I receive a call whilst listening to music after subsequently hanging up the bug re-appears.
Anyone else getting this?

I have this too, but I don't think the bug is mediapanel related only.
I get this when I use S2P, Wmplayer and the media panel.
Sounds almost like flat mono before I tap pause and then play again..
I don't see this as a huge bug, but it can get annoying.
It depends on the mood I'm in..
can anyone compare the speakerphone to a nokia n73 or n70?
It's definitely weaker than the N73 one.
so much so its sickening or just a tiny bit? how bad are we talking about here :S?
I was expecting this thread to be about the poor speakerphone quality.... which it is. I know of no WM phone with a good speakerphone so I wasn't expecting it to be as good as my N95's. However, music through headphone jack is as good, or perhaps even better than my N95 (not as much background hiss as the N95). I use Shure SE430's (pretty expensive earphones) and I find the music playback to be quite good. I even hook the X1 up to my Logitech Z5500 speakers through the Line-in jack and I can pretty much DJ a party with the phone and it sounds as good as if the songs were being played off my computer. (This is all through the SE Multimedia Panel btw. I get similar results with CorePlayer or Windows Media Player).
The only problem I have with the media panel is I can't receive calls with it open. That may or may not be a plus/minus to some people, but I guess it's ok. When people call me, it goes straight to voicemail. The only way I can receive calls with music playing is to go back to the today screen (with the music still going), which works out ok too, since I hold the end key to lock the phone, which brings it back to the Today screen before locking.
worst audio player?? are you kidding?
sorry, but thats definitly NOT TRUE.
***************************
the x1 has got the best and most powerfull audio out, i`ve tested. (but not compared with n70/73)
i wrote it few days ago in the accessoires threat.
i use the Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Inear
with 3 drivers/speakers per earpiece. (like a 3 way oldschool musik speaker)
i`ve tested my ue10pro headsets with a lot of other mp3 players and mobile phones.
but the X1 is the first player, who can unleash the power to drive the UE 10 pro to there limit....
only my sondcard a creative x-fi has got enough power to blast your ears/tympanic membrane....
the base is unbeleavable! the headset can go down to 10hz. and the high tones are crisp, sharp, clear. but a little
to soft from the middle to the highest frequency. but this could be fixed with the equalizer/audio booster.
if you set the first base frequency to +12 and the second slider to -10, you can formerly 'feel' the extreme deep bases.
you cant beleave, that you are not in a club!
don`t use the x1+ue10 for longer time on maximum power. thats very risky for your ears. trust me.
the only thing is, you have to use coreplayer and calibrate the equalizer.
or use a new custom rom (touch it hd) with integrated audio booster.
holy ****, that rulez!!
Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Inear (~300$-400$)
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimat...escription.php
these devices with othoplastic, spezially for your ears. and a laser burns your name into the headsets.
if you have 900$ bucks into your pocket, take a look at that:
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimat...escription.php
or 1150$? with 4 audio drivers/speaker per ear!!
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimat...escription.php
this is the last headset you buy! the cables are replaceble with translucent cables and iphone button.
no more broken headset cables/wires.
my advice, use coreplayer. DONT adjust the equalizer/tone faders more then 12 db.
you will be surprised.
(core is able to adjust more than 12db/slider. more then 12db will bring disharmonies and ugly subtones and crickeling)
(the audio booster could only adjust 6 db. thats not enough for xtreme bases.
but dont use in coreplayer the 2 lowest faders both to +12. thats to much base and
the headsets and the power amp will be very unprecise and roar/rumble and you run into danger to burn the headset
for good kickbase decrase the lowest fader to -3 and the second fader to +12, the 3th to +6. increase the high tones 1-4 db.
for good ultra deep base drums, set the lowest frequenzy +9 or +12, and the second one to -2, the third 0 db.
i have a ultimate ear fi 5 pro headphones with two driver lower is range then DOMin8or tri fi 10 pro. i get quite good results but not on the default player. I only use touch flo 3d in -built music player with audio booster, if you know how to set it , i guarantee you get better sound then walkman phone. i prefer bass and vocal no to be so dull. get the touch flo 3d music player set it to rock mode first then try to made this mode to v shape by just shifting the first two bar to be same as the last two bar, trust me even if you are using your default headphones, you will notice the difference

speaker phone n95 8gb i think is the best
try this setting on audio booster
possibly, but i will it verify by my own. for me, this is the best combo i`ve tested. and ths x1 has got exactly that power, i`ve searched for. more power will destruct my/your ears
i like this unhealthy power of X1. and at 90% power, the sound is very precise and defined.
and 90% is my personal max. and i like it loud. but 100% ? not with me. *G
audio booster has got other cross over frequencies. so my advice/hint could not used with audio booster. audio booster has a range of +-6 db. thats not as good as cores +-12db(possible +-18, but most time useless. only for spezial noise filtering. for example in microphone recordings)
the most players output power broken down, if i increased the base and at high volume.
with other players, you can formaly feel the missing amp power. (ipod nano iv suuuxxxxxx, cheap no name mp3 player, orbit, diamond, nokia 6233, creative zen v plus. but zen v was the best.(not the best menu, but good sound quali)
but now the x1 is my favorit device)
imho the x1 has got a good power amp.
im not sure will it fit everyone style but after some tunning i think this settings best for me to go for on default earphones, i have been looking for post how to optimized sound quality, here is one, hopefully more will share there experience, i bought the x1 because of the 3.5mm connector if x1 doesnt has it i wont even look up to x1!

I have found some strange behaviour that i'm hoping someone else can test out on their Galaxy S.
I have found that some headphones seem to work fine with the phone for music playing but others result in the sound being distorted with the vocals being very faint as if the left and right channel are cancelling each other out (with vocals generally being on left and right channel).
The packaged Samsung headphones appear to work properly although the quality seems average. I tried my iPhone headphones but these resulted in the strange sound distortion described above. I also tried a pair of cheap Sennheiser which were a free give away with a purchase from Richer Sounds and they worked well. Another pair of no-name cheap headphones exhibited the same distortion problems as the iPhone headphones.
Oddly, the FM radio sounded ok with all the headphones, it's just the music player that has the problem. I have also tried a couple of other music apps including the doubletwist player to rule out the software.
I'm considering taking it back to the shop to swap for a replacement. I'd be grateful if anyone could try out some headphones (particularly iPhone ones) on their Galaxy S and report their results to see if this is just a quirk with my phone or the Galaxy S in general.
Many Thanks
I just need some clarification because I know that a headset, and not headphones, is delivered with the Iphone. If it was a headset then I might suspect that different Iphones use different polarity as opposed to Samsung. Try out the Samsung headset on the Iphone.
EDIT:
Obviously not the problem. I must have skipped over the radio experience.
I can't post a link to it, but I remembered that GSMArena did a thorough review of the SGS. If you find your way to it, go to page 6 and see the sound chart at the bottom. SGS is superior in sound to iPhone. Perhaps the iPhone headset/headphones and the cheap ones are not sufficient for the SGS? I'm guessing
I had a similar experience when I tried to use the Samsung Spica headset on my HTC Hero. It seems that it might be a difference in polarity as suggested above.
Does all the headsets that give distorted sounds have a microphone on them? (E.g. not headphones)
the iPhone's headphones have extremely high distortion regardless of the media using to play them. The SGS is probably just overpowering them because they are very loud headphones as well/easily powered.
No it's nothing to do with them being overpowered.
I have an expensive pair of etymotic in ear headphones that are exhibiting the very same problem. Strangely I found a fix. They have a microphone on them and pressing in the answer button on them seems to fix the problem. I have taped the button down now and everything works perfectly. The second that button is released though, everything goes back to being faint, muffled and distorted.
Odd!
PS. This isn't just with the music player. I noticed it first watching a video.
It sounds like Samsung has their own way of producing the 3.5mm port with regards to the microphone support.
The Samsung headset distorts music on my HTC Hero.
The HTC headset distorts music on my gfs Galaxy Spica
To be clear, are you saying the problem only affects headsets with microphones? I have etymotic er4p headphones and it would be a deal breaker if they didn't work right with this phone.
If its only showing up in the media player, check that you havent enabled the 5.1 button in the the top right of the player. This can really screw with the sound and entire frequency ranges can be lost. I'm guessing this is whats happening.
The default headphones work fine for me if a little tinny, but with my Senheissers, the results are very pleasing. Apart from a slight gap between tracks that should seemlessly play through, I prefer using it to my iPod Touch. Being able to change tracks and volume without unlocking is a nice feature.
I threw my iPod headphones out years ago, they're the most ridiculous design ever, with the cable tapping the inside sleeve all the time when you walk or run.

It sounds like that the problem is with headsets with microphones, yes. Not sure if it happens with all 3rd party headsets w/ mic though.
Considering you have etymotic, and ClownShoes a few posts up have problems with this brand, I guess you're out of luck unless you wanna tape the answering button like he did.
The er4p is just headphones, so it sounds like i'm in luck.
Got my GS a few days ago and im having exactly the same problem with the Etymotic hf2 Headset with mic. So yeah it looks like it the mic that causes the problems.

It's a little bit crude, but taping the button down does work.
I have the same issue with with Monster Studios even with the cable without the integrated mic. Would be great to have some sort of fix.
Headphone issues
Just thought I would post what I knew about the issue, both me and my dad purchased the same pair of headphones to use on mp3 players (the headphones are ultimate ears metro fi 220 vi's if I remember correctly, these have an in-line microphone as well as a single button for answering calls and to control music playback). Whilst I experienced no distortion when using them on my iPod Classic, my Dad's Creative player would produce the issues described above - he found that either taping the button down or slightly pulling the headphones out would solve the issue however it ended up annoying him so much that he went back to using another set of headphones.
I don't know what causes the issue but I just thought I would let people know
i have some sennsihaur sport headphones which work fine no problems. i also a monster fm transmitter in the car.. again no problesm.. just make sure the volume is not on max but 1 setting below max.
Hmmmm, a few problems here. Obviously the standard Samsung headphones are fine, no humming, no background noise. However if I connect the following:
1. Standard Apple iPhone (with mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
2. Shure (no mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
3. B&O (no mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
4. Shure (with mic adaptor) loads of background noise, humming etc greatly reduced by pressing the mute key.
Using the Shure adaptor with the others resulting in the same as 4.
Needless to say I'm not happy!
That's too bad. Not being able to use my Shure with the phone renders it useless for music and that IS important.
In the SERVICE MODE *#*#197328640#*#* there is an audio menu
there you can change the headset settings too like NR noise reducion.
i did not test and changed the settings but when i had the samsung omnia2 last year
i had some problems with my headset and fix it in in the sevice menu.
when you gonne do some tests write down the orginal settings before you try.
hope this will help some of you..... and post the results
im sure its the jack, cos the galaxy s has a 4pole trrs at left/right/mic/ground
iphone compatible headset have a 4pole trrs at left/right/ground/mic
thats why pressing the mic button clears up the sound as it closes the circuit
so it a matter of finding an adaptor that switches the mic and ground terminals
I have a tf10vi and im trying to diy one
will post the results
Just saw the post and thought I would check mine again, not that I noticed anything....anyway tried few songs and different types and all are sounding amazing, I use Sure 530 so music needs to be no lower than 256 to get the best out of the phones, most of my music tracks are 320bit.
Hi,
I just got my Desire HD yesterday and I love it so far and I am running the Android Revolution HD 3.5.
I have one issue though, when I have no music playing and I hit the play button with SRS, Dolby, or Equilized there is a loud 'click with base' noise right before the song starts, it almost sounds like I plug in the headphones into the jack and there is some electrical 'boom' , something similar to what you hear if you plug in a guitar with the amplifier on, if you understand.
It is really annoying as it happens evertime i pause a song and then start it again, note this only happens when I have the enhancements on, not on regular setting.
Using Bose Around Ear headphones.
Thanks
I know what you are mean ...
i had that problem too, but at this time i haven't it..
with the htc headphones it clicks but with the one i have now there is no problem
So you are saying that it might be the headphones?
Which ones are you using now, what fixed it for you?
Thanks for your reply!
BTW, if I use something like WinAMP would it go away?
Can anybody actually get good quality music from their DHD??
I have some rather expensive earphones which sound superb through PC, iPhone and iPod, plugged in the DHD, the volume is rather poor and the quality at louder volume suffers, I'm assuming this is down to poor hardware rather than software as I've tried several music players and I'm using lossless media.
Anybody managed to get near-iPod like quality music from their device?

I have to say that I am happy with the sound. I have noticed the issue to my problem though, as i paus the song, the phone tend to turn off the sound enhancements after few seconds and the sound that is really annoying is when it turns back on after that, so is there any hack to not allow it to turn off?

I tried CM7 but it just felt unpolished for some reason and I just want stock stock 2.3 if im gonna make the change, just got the phone so want to get tired of Sense first.
Mixzing app had an equilizer that worked perfect, not the greatest looking app thats around but it works.
I still cant figure out the problem with the regular Dolby stuff, really annoying, I mean its not a cheap phone.
Clicks and pops in pandora audio.
this looks like the basic stagefright issue but good lord how long will this go on?
I have tried to disable stagefright but have been unable to do it or tell that i have as the problem has not gone away.
i do still need to do that.
I see so little information on this.
CM7 2.6.35.13 pershoot kernel
It doesnt happen in jango. havent tried slacker.
Doesnt happen in radio time.
only happens on some pandora songs.
Coldplay songs on pandora have it often enough. "Clocks"
this is a tmobile g2. it is running off of 4g.
i have tried bumping the cpu up.
changing EQ settings and lots of searching.
it appears that some phones have this issue and other do not but most appearances of the issue do not have a solid solution.
if there is a solid solution to this i did not see it in a FAQ.
Is there no solution to this? is this still a fight between android and pandora audio format or what is the deal?
I noticed I get choppy audio from Pandora if "Cell Network Audio Quality" in "Preferences" is set to "Normal". After changing it to "High" the audio is clear and sounds amazing in my car!
Aw geese. I am using high quality audio.
The cm7 basic kernel does the same thing. It has done this since I moved off the stock rom to cm 6.
The clicks and pops and not easy to hear. But once I hear it then I think its happening all the time.
Slacker doesn't seem to have this issue.
I use blue tooth a2dp? Stereo head phones and they are working in this mode.
I have had a mobile 6.5 phone a 3g iphone and this g2 with these head phones. The g2 audio in pandora is unacceptable.
Ill use slacker but I like pandora.
And pandora should work.
I do not accept that it is an issue with only my phone.
I think if you listen with right song the clicks are very noticable. Anybody should be able to hear it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I use pandora mostly in my car with just a hair over 1000 watts total to door speakers and subwoofer. The door speakers have the majority of the power with a 760 watt amp, and I listen to my music loud. I'm sure I would have noticed any clicking and popping. I use a stereo jack though, maybe because you are using wireless it doesn't sound as good.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
it doesnt happen with all songs.
But it doesnt happen with slacker at all.
it is something to do with pandora.
I believe the past issues were with the android codec and a fileformat pandora used. I figure that must still be the case.
Not all of pandoras songs use the same file format as i understand it asn i dont hear the issue in every song.
I do hear it as well through the crappy car stereo mini plug input jack i use.
what are your phone specs? are you using cyanogenmod 7? which kernel?
Are you running in high quality audio for pandora.
have you tried it their coldplay songs?
also have you tried using bluetooth stereo headphones.
i dont use the miniplug input jack in my car.
the headphones i use are.
sony
dr-bt22a
they sound fine in pandora on all the phones i have tried that have bluetooth audio that is not broken. Granted a lot of phones have broken bluetooth audio.
I run MIUI 1.7.1, kernel 2.6.35.13-EB-CM7-Streamline5 on my T-Mo G2. Dunno the clock speed but whatever default is, I haven't tweaked it at all. I run Pandora with high quality audio, and I mostly listen to top hits, and electronic style music, not cold play specifically. Also, I don't have any bluetooth headphones, the only time I use Pandora is in my car, and I have a stereo jack input on my stereo.
cm7 nightlies here, I use pandora daily and have never experienced this issue... and I am definitely anal about audio quality.

not any known problems that I'm aware of, but that would be the first place I'd look to when troubleshooting.
see if completely disabling DSP manager for bluetooth makes a difference.
I'll try a coldplay station (mind you, I'm not a fan. you owe me. ) on the way home today and see if I can pick out any infidelity.
some call it heterosexual gay music...
but what ever.
I think i have tried disabling it.
I dont know. I was really hoping there was some known issue somewhere.
Other songs do it too. in pandora. slacker, which i dont like much, does not seem to have this issue.
it does it without the dsp from what i can tell its just harder to hear but
red hot chili peppers "scar tissue" does it pretty clearly and horribly.
dsp on or off. even tried killing the dps service.
next song was matt kearney "nothing left to lose" and i did not hear it there but i think it is... if i hadnt heard it in the previous song I would not think it was in this one.
maybe i can make a recording of the audio...
Hmm. if i can get to happen from the audio jack as well. it sounded like it was doing it in the car with the mini plug.
