ppl with soundprobs! found my source! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

My htc has, since a cpl of weeks ago, seemingly randomly turned mute from time to time.
I don't mean normal mute as in "i know the phone is muted", it's more like "i wonder if it's muted, altho the sound vol is up and everything seems normal".
The muting is global, affects both system sounds, ringtone, mp3s etc.
I always thought it was a software issue since it all started right after i uninstalled phonealarm.
Yesterday, by chance, i discovered the source.
The thing is, when stylus is inserted the phone goes mute.
If i slowly remove the stylus the phone remains mute.
If i remove the stylus with a twist or fast the sound comes back.
So it's a hardware issue!
How on earth the stylus affects the audio i'm not sure of, my guess is there's some force applied to something in the phone which makes for bad contact to the speaker or something like that....
Anyways, i've read a cpl other posts which describe similiar symptoms about the audio, but i've never heard of anyone detecting the source to the stylus.
Not exactly the first place to look for errs.
Pls try fiddling with the stylus and lemme know if it has any impact on the sound.
Cheers

also a hardware problem here. hard-reset did nothing to the problem.
after reading the above, i now notice that sliding the keyboard open/closed will make the speaker work for about .2 seconds as the keyboard clicks open & closed. this is after hard reset with NOTHING done (except playing sound file using WMP)

Really a reply to both above posters. The front speaker is one of those that has spring type contacts with the board. These can become loose. This has certainly happened with one or two folks vibrate motor that also conects with leaf spring contacts. They found that just a slight bend back to give the springs a better contact worked just fine.
Mike

thanks for the info, but physically taking apart my TyTN is a little daunting for me.
I think maybe better just to send mine back for repair.
however, it's nice to know what is causing the problem!

I can confirm.
How hard is this to fix? And where exactly is this located- I've looked at all the photo files in the Wiki and I'm at a loss as to where exactly I find this.
My speaker cuts out exactly when the stylus clicks in to the clip. This is really disappointing because at this point I'm stuck either enabling the vibe all the time or keeping my BT earpeice on all the time- in addition there's the issue of no sound on speaker phone.

Can I just check - are you having muting on both front AND rear speakers?
I ask because muting on one when the stylus is taken in/out suggests a poor connection at the speaker - whichever one. If it's both then it may be a poor connection or a cracked mboard but not a simple loose connection at one speaker.

Not sure what you mean by the 'front speakers'- if you mean the standard phone speaker then the answer is no- can hear calls placed just fine. I've also discovered that I can re-enable the speaker by gently pressing the two halves together along the right edge (side with the power button). This screams 'short' to me loud and clear.
My issue is that a warranty repair will cost 3-4 weeks and 70 bucks to send to Germany (I bought mine from an importer). I'd be willing to void the thing if I was sure I knew what to look for once I got inside.

Ok, the rear speaker does not have the spring type contacts it's a white push in connector under the rear cover.
See top edge white connector (red/black wires)

No. My stylus seems to be locking in place just fine with out it. This raises a question in my mind: maybe it's not there to brace the stylus; could it be there to protect vibration damage to the mobo?

Well yes in a way. As you will know by now there is a white plastic spring clip that locks onto the end of the stylus, so the rubber block is not to retain the stylus as such. However, without the block the stylus does in many cases tend to rattle about a bit and often the clip alone is not enough to allow you to pull stylus out and have it come out extended. So yes it prevents a bit of vibration but also just firms up the stylus when extracting it.
Mike

Speaker Speaker!
i also have this annoying rear speaker problem since 2-3 weeks now.but my tytn doesn't seem to have a plastic block to disturb the speaker connector, coz i dismantled the phone n replugged the speaker connector and turned it on while its still turned on.but the problem persisted.i don't know wot to do,may be i can solder the speaker wires to the mobo!is this ok?

You could solder the wires to the board connections. But, without testing, you might find that the problem lies elsewhere e.g. faulty speaker.
I assume you have done a hard reset just to be sure it's not a software issue?

yeah you're right but theres something i haven't mentioned earlier.when i first experienced this problem i thought it was some kind of a loose connection and hit the phone softly on the back where the speaker lies.some times it worked and after 2-3 ringing times the sound went mute.anyway before soldering i should check the speaker.it never occurred to me since its a new device!
yes i tried hard resetting,in fact i upgraded the rom recently to black 3.1
WHY DOES HTC PRODUCE THIS CRAPPY DEVICES!!

Worth checking because I did see a report by someone who replaced the speaker and it then worked - and none of our devices are very old!
Mike

finally mike,i got it done!its the speaker you were right, repalced the speaker and voila!its working again!
thnx for the help man!

Not a hardware issue...
I have been having a notifications issue as of late. Currently using VP3G v2.0 Cingular... (non hybrid).
I will get notifications fine for SMS/MMS, Email, Newsbreak... but after it goes to sleep... it will randomly stop sending the sounds. I will wake the device and see missed emails and text messages.
If I go into System > Sounds & Notifcations... and go to the Notifications tab... I can select my text message selection.. and press the Play/Preview button... nothing will happen... if I then press the Stop button... THEN the Play/Preview button again after.. it plays fine... and it will work again for a limited amount of time before it goes silent.
This is obviously not a hardware issue... please help if you can... everything is perfect except this inconsistent behavior with the notifications.
Hope to hear from some of you... much appreciated.

More Hermes Sound Issues
Hi guys,
Tried all previous post suggestions, my 'no sound' issue seems more deep rooted than a few contacts (or the lac there of) here and there.
Ruling out software (after hard reset) and ruling out misalignment or contact deterioration, here's the insight to my problem:
when sound is either played through the back unit speaker, or the earpiece at first it seems like there no sound. But in either case, if you bring your ear up close to the respective sound source, a 'jittering' sort of sound barely audible can be heard. As the symptoms on both the sound source are identical, I assumed that its a problem in the sound circuitry, but non the less, I tested the rear speaker by changing with a known good working one, the results were the same.
Any one have any suggestions at all? or even access to the schematics that indicate the audio circuitry for some trouble shooting?
Thanks in advance.

All I can suggest is to try cleaning the contacts (both on the motherboard and the speaker) with Isopropyl Alcohol, or surgical spirits for the layman, to see if there is any corrosian present.
Use a cottonbud dipped into the alcohol. DON'T USE METHO... It leaves a residue.
Trying to track the sound circuitry isn't really feasible as the Hermes Mainboard is multi-layered and is a ***** to try to work on. You'd destroy it instead of fixing it.
Cheers...

How to repair the sound issue on Prophet
Hi
I could read a lot of posts on that issue and found this solution:
Remove the battery cover. Then the camera cover: to do so, lift up the gently the cover starting from the side of the battery.
You will see something looking like a fan. This is the speaker. the problem is with the red wire whixh connect the speaker.
Turn on your prophet and run your favourite MP3 song.
then touch the red wire with your stylus. The sound should come back. Insert a piece of folded paper to keep the cable properly fixed. that's all
Watch out not to wish to fix it too nicely, you could damage the wire !
Hope this help, otherwise a return to the service department will be necessary !
Hope this helps

Hay the paper trick works!
I went here to learn how to remove the flap to the speakers:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=240109
Well, my speaker had the voice coil broken... touching the membrane would bring it back to life but that is no real solution. I replaced it with a speaker from a used old cellphone with some minor use of hot glue to fix it in place and seal around it.
It works now just as new.
Nir
yeah it is a real Problem.
mine is broken twice in 6 months.
tried the paper thing. but it sometimes sounds weird and there's some hissing. maybe I did it wrong. so I tweak it a bit and just lost it completely. no sound whatsoever now.
went to the service center today. they said that they have a new batch of speaker which supposed to be better than the previous one. if anyone can confirm.

I'll try this one myself - my speaker just died again - it's been back once already.
Well, I followed the instructions above and now I have a working speaker again. A very low tech fix to a high tech device.
I have found a small bit of sponge does the job better than folded paper.
what is the type of speaker.
i mean can i use any speaker?
what's the best?
Mohammad, you seem to have missed the point of the replies in this thread. We don't know where to get another speaker from but we do know how to make the existing one work again.

Hay Guys,
I am suffering from this nasty problem since sometime. My brother has tweaked the speakers with a metal piece seem to work. However if I use speakerphone, it goes off.
Is there a permanent solution to this constant spurce of unhappiness.
Incidently I have been blessed with a on & off camera problem as well. I think I will never buy a DOPOD product in my life again.
My Camera has those colour matrix instead of proper images. Occasionally it behaves normally. I have tried hard reset already.
Any body? help !!!!!

It's too bad they saved on the speaker. Guess the manufacturer of the speaker had a very nice presentation @ HTC
Trying to download that pdf file, but it's not working :/ However I've read on other occasions that people talk about that motorola speaker as a replacement. Might be worth giving a more detailed look into that.
What exactly is the problem with the speaker btw? Did anyone narrowed that down already? Why is the speaker not functioning properly?

I did it yesterday, and works fine, but isn´t easy to do it

Gameboy Phone Update 12/10/2013

Hi there,
I'm trying to build a fully functional android gameboy phone
There is a motorola flipout inside with android 2.1.
I choose this phone because its small enough to fit the gameboy and i bought it for only 80 euro's (105 dollar).
I'm trying to make it as functionall as possible
UPDATE: 12/10/2013 Back in action
Sorry i didn't work on the project for a long time becouse i burned the motherboard from the motorola flipout.
I bought a new soldering iron with temputare control.
And use Kynar wire and thin soldering becouse everything is verry thiny .
And ofcourse a new motorola flipout phone and btw sorry for the bad english.
If you guys can help me sort out the Keyboard software problem my phone would be 100% functional.
I can already make calls and use the onscreen keyboard.
Also the microphone is working its located at the speaker hole from the gameboy.
I only tested Nes and a Gb emulator and it works quite well on the low spec device.
UPDATE: 12/10/2013

UPDATE 12/10/2013
Already done:
- Dremel the Gameboy casing for more space
- Remove keyboard buttons on motorola flipout
- Solder wires on motorola flipout keyboard
- Cut pcb gameboy buttons and solder wires
- Solder wires on lock button
- Solder wires on jack plug
- On screen keyboard while hardware keyboard is open
To do list:
- Locksreen button holder
- Jack plug holder
- External battery
- Micro usb charger port
- Camera Hole
- Paint the casing
Problems:
The Hardware keyboard is open so everytime when you push the gameboy buttons.
When the phone screen is off it will putt the screen on again.
I have to find a way to only disable the hardware keys when the screen is off.
And that you have to use the lockscreen button to unlock.
Does anyone have a idea to do that in Android?
Im not a programmer
What kind of Motorola flip out is it? Could you include model number and possibly some pictures of the phone's board? Great concept btw, I've been thinking of the same thing but with a classic NES controller, using my old Motorola W490...
Sent from XDA app on my ICS powered G2 ( Andromadus a10)
Haha you gotta love Nintendo
Its a motorola MB511 Flipout Qwertz
Android 2.1
First i couldnt use the phone to call when it was closed.
Then i used the app Fullscreen Caller ID and i could use the phone to call when its closed .
With fully functional front and backspeaker but the mic is underneath the display when its closed.

Closed:

The other side can hear me but when its in a Gameboy you cant hear me anymore.
For the front and back speaker i can drill holes as if the motorola was made 4 it .
But i need to extend my microphone and i was thinking about plugging in a microphone in the 3,5mm jackplugg.
But doesnt that take away the function of the front and back speaker becouse it thinks its a headset.
Why not cram a headset inside it?
I dont have enough space for it Only 4 the mic.
If i lower down the display it would look ridiculous.
So is there anyway to connect a microphone and still use the front and backspeaker?
Extending the microphone on the motherboard is my last option XD.
Mobile phones are fragile as hell and there is no such thing as a repair tutorial 4 the flipout.
So opening the motorola is verry risky for me
Props to you, good sir. I honestly don't know anything about what you are attempting to do with the microphone, but I really hope someone helps you. That is a brilliant idea. May I make a suggestion, though?
In the pic you showed, it looks like you are going to have just empty space in the lower part of the Gameboy. If you weren't going to already, you may want to add some filler in there, just to balance the thing out, if only to make the Gameboy not so top-heavy.
Are you going to make a charging porthole for the Gameboy, so that you can leave it in, even when charging?

There is gonna be some extra juice in the lower part of the gameboy
So i'm not that worried about the balance thing .
And yep i'm thinking about using the original porthole 4 charging
I took the motorola flipout apart
The good news is i can solder the buttons to the phone easily
My first plan was to solder the buttons to a bleutooth keyboard
Also the phone thinks the keyboard is open even when its closed
I have to do this because i cant call without the keyboard opened.
Now my only problem with the phone is how to extend the microphone???
I cant solder the microphone loose i geuss??
I made some pictures of the inside of the motorola flipout maybe somebody can suggest something???
awesome!
Why can't you drills holes on the gameboy plastic for the mic??
Do you have an electronic board on the lower part of the gameboy, on witch buttons interacts?
Because the best solution would be to have the motorola open inside the gameboy casing. With or without the motorola casing. If you take of the motorola casing plastic you could put the electronic board (with the battery) on top of the buttons and the drills a hole for the mic...
Yes, the second pic with the arrows should be the mic. You could get, or fashion, a piece that that goes over the mic to face it away from the rest of the device. Then have a tube (air tubing?) To string it where you need it. (Remember some sort of dust screen for the mic port)

+1 for a tube!!
I would suggest a wired mono headset so you can place a microphone at the bottom and an earpeice at the top. sorry if this has been mentioned already. I read only to about halfway down.
Fantastic idea!
Just a little idea- why dont you get a set of headphones with a microphone built in (wired hands free kit) mount the mic where ever you need, chop the headphones off and run a mono speaker where the stock speaker used to be?
If you wanted to get super awesome, why not hook the volume control wheel into the wire after the mic but before the speaker, and run a dual 3mm headphone jack, so you could mute the speaker, and plug normal headphones in if you ever wanted to, and still have an external microphone in there? (obviously the dual jack would have to support the microphone connection too, but you could always fabricate this yourself if you knew how? (I dont, just an idea) )
Definitely watching this thread though, I'd love to do this with an old gaming console and my phone somehow.

For OP.
Have you posted this on a Nintendo forum on the nintendo website. You could have some brilliant ideas come from there too. I am sure someone with a tech mind for modding could help you there.
YES YOU CAN!
IPHONE HEADPHONES WITH MIC?
also go to walmart and find a cheap headset
or dollar tree
or if funds are no issue, find an old Nintendo DS,DSI,DS lite
CHEERS N GOOD LUCK!
tried this before and sold it for 340 on ebay =) but i had the Pikachu Version!
and the Clear Purple
also if i can be any help PM me, and we will go from there
Nice work man!keep on
I want that yellowboy shell.
So far this is the most awesome project I've ever seen on XDA!
The Microphone wouldnt be a problem but there is little space 4 a earpiece if i would use a headset.
I cant use the headset and earpiece on the phone @ the same time .
The easiest thing would be if there is some kind of app to use only the microphone on a headset and still use the earpiece of the motorola.
Is there somebody that knows a app that can direct sound both on the phone and headset????
Oh and yes i have a electronic board on the lower part of the gameboy on witch buttons interacts
I'l make some pictures when i am finished soldering

haha +1 again for the tubing i cant use the tube becouse of the electronic part of the gameboy buttons.
But your tubing gave me a idea to use tubing to direct sound between the tight space between the screen and phone from the earpiece of a headset.

S5 Duos low mic

Hey guys just got my S5 and I am told that the mic volume is quote low by people I speak to. Is this normal or I have a faulty device on my hands
Very unlikely to be a hardware problem. Usually it's a user error e.g. not holding the phone close enough to your mouth or using the phone in very loud environments.
Try using the phone normally i.e. not in speaker phone mode where performance is worse and you annoy everyone within earshot. You can also try disabling noise reduction in the settings menu. Infrequently you may have water, dirt or your finger (when you hold the phone) obscuring the microphone hole on the bottom of the phone.
It's also possible to tweak the mic volume in the service menu /audio submenu. A forum search will explain the details if you wish to try that.

I have the same problem on the same device - but from all the googling I did - It turns out it a common problem with the S5 (single or dual SIM).
So far I did not find any solution to the problem...
Please share if you had any luck?
I am even considering widening the hole of the microphone (it is about 30% narrower then the S4), I do not care that much of the water protection...
Solved!
Happy to report I solved my low mic. problem!
Unfortunately it compromises the waterproofing, but I gladly sacrificed it!
I did poke in the microphone hole with a tin wire about 3-4 mm into the hole. I did not feel any resistance, but apparently I broke the waterproofing membrane on the microphone hole.
Now people can hear me even when I am whispering! I am so happy with my phone! (at one point I was thinking of replacing it because of the muffled mic.!)
The membrane I am talking about can be seen on the middle frame over the mic. hole on the attached picture.
Please if you do what I did - be careful, it might damage the microphone...

Hi armsel,
Good Spot!!! thanks for sharing the trick. I am having the same problem with my and I wish to follow your procedure in my phone.
Please provide more information with detailed steps and screen shots because I'm little confused in figured out microphone hole why because found two holes in bottom and top of the phone. I knew its my own risk and don't consider about waterproof.
Thanks in advance...

Your primary microphone is the one on the bottom - next to the USB port (the top microphone is used for noise cancellation and you can leave as it is). You only need to poke the bottom one. Be gentle - if you feel resistance - don't push (I did not feel any resistance as far as I can remember). Test afterwords and see if there is an improvement - if not, try to penetrate little bit further (I believe I went something like 3, maybe even 5 mm in).
Best way to test - if you have another phone and call it on Viber (I did that with my wife galaxy S4 mini). And leave your next to a radio set with talk show on.
Good luck! :good:

Xiaomi Mi A1 Volume issue with connected headphones - Volume self adjusts to DND mode

Recent Mi A1 owner here, as usual getting little joy from Mi support.
I purchased a new Mi A1 recently but when I connect the headphones the volume self adjust down to DND mode. If i try to increase it will resist and push itself back down. This is an intermittent problem but will usually happen within 2-10 seconds of plugging in.
The headphones are JCV with inbuilt mic and three rings. One button to answer call. When this button is pressed the volume reduces one step on the slider (volume slider display appears on phone.) They are working fine on my other devices.
The Mi A1 is Gold MDG2 running stock 7.1.2
I'm trying to determine if this is a hardware issue with the phone (in which case I can exchange) or
a software issue with Android
it has been suggested in (1) other thread that there may be an incompatibility issue with the inbuilt mic.
Has anyone else suffered similar issues? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
I believe this is an android issue. I've experienced the same on other phones, but it happened so infrequently (1 or 2 times a month), it didn't bother me. The quick fix was to take the headphones out and insert them again right after it happens. I find it happens with IEMs (with volume controls or even one button for pause/play/fwd/back) that are damaged or well used/dying soon.
Since i read this thread, i went looking to see if there were some fixes. Can you see if you can enable your System UI tuner? Follow this path >Do Not Disturb>Volume Buttons Shortcut to off?
I only read this so i am trying myself as well and will see if i get this problem again. My reasoning as to why this may work is that i think the volume controls may be an issue on the IEMs/headphones. I think it must be sending some kind of command that enables the DND with the volume button controls. Anyways, just my hypothesis, maybe give it a try.

Thanks for the tip about system UI. I have disabled it and will be testing now to see the effect. The JVC headphone are fairly new but are budget. I will try to purchase the Xioami basic headphones this week to see if the problem persists. They have the same feature set as the current pair I am using.
Same here.
Sometimes the volume will increase itself, making bad things to my poor ears...
The stange thing is that sometimes instead of increasing the volume, it will stop the music or enable DND mode.
This isuse happen with some device not all. I think this is hardware issuse, not software. I asked one guy who use LG quadbeat 3 like me, he says everything fine with him.
Try to test with xiaomi test, the test auto recognize volume down button without press.
So what is solution?
Use headphone without mic, or just one "skip" button.
Really disapointed with this device. After facing warm color screen and laggy scolling, and jack problem make me feel tired.
The first and last phone with xiaomi.
Some additional findings:
It seems that blowing into the microphone causes the volume to reduce on the handset. Also, if i am driving the issue intensify's so it seems to be something being picked up by the microphone that is making the volume reduce.
Xiaomi customer support are baffled and only advise to take it to a service center.
Okay this might sound weird, but I faced the same issue in yu yureka.
The cause from what i was able to determine was this type of connector will work without the issue you faced,

My CX180's and my JBL headphones (don't remember the model) work fine with the connector with two "grooves" where as
another pair of JBL's (don't remember the model) and a model of Sony headphones with three "grooves" will give me the above mentioned issue. Again, Just what i experienced. Might not be the case for all.
(Tested on both the black variant and the white variant)
Almost assuredly, it will involve 3rd ring because the 3rd ring is what sends the commands and the command it sends is what I suspect is the issue.
2 rings means no remote/mic and no commands, those two rings are output only, only transmit the sound.

It don't think this a purely hardware issue. It's happened on my old phones (Axon 7) and specifically with nougat, never happened in Lollipop. Also, Nexus/Sony/Moto devices have the same reported issue. So to blame this fully on Xiaomi, I don't think is fair. If that many manufacturers have similar reports, it's clear its something beyond hardware or a particular phone/manufacturer.
The one IEM I had this issue with is one with a single button. So I don't think that is a solution.
Can't say I've had such a bad experience with this phone. In fact, I think it's made me interested in buying Xiaomi again, especially if they continue in the android one program.

Odd indeed. Have you tried with other headphones? I'm guessing the system ui thing didn't work then?
I tried with my Sennheiser Momentum (3 button cable), an old pair of KZ ED10 (single button), and a newer set of KZ ATR (single button), all without issues. The only one I have with this issue on are my other cheap and well-worn VJJB K4 (single button). I'll keep testing.

I can confirm the two pairs of headphones I have tried are "three ring" variety and both give issues. It seems to be something to do with the microphone picking up sounds as when I blow into the mic the volume will reduce one step and when I am driving it will reduce all the way to DND.
Surely this does not mean I cannot use inline headphones with a microphone? I guess investing in bluetooth is the way forward. This almost renders the headphone jack as useless. I will be purchasing the Xiaomi budget headphones (with inline mic and answer button) and will report my findings accordingly. These are also "three ring".
Follow up report for anyone experiencing similar issues.
Since purchasing the Xiaomi basic headphones I have not experienced any issues.
Possible cause: The Xiaomi have a higher ohm rating than my previous set, so it could be something to do with this. My old JVC HAFR37A had only 16 ohms whereas the Xiaomi basic operate at 32 ohms. Both headphones have the same feature set.
Thanks for all the replies.
Some additional information regarding the Xiaomi basic headphones.
Went for a swim today and after completing several lengths of the pool I discovered the headphones in my swimshort pockets. Expecting the worse I left them on the side to dry.
Later that evening tested the headphones and the sound quality and function were all intact!
Yes I have exactly the same issue! I thought it was my headphones that were not working, but in fact I see that many have this problem. I ordered new headphones.

Nexus 6P - Since Replacing Battery, All Audio Function (in/out) Is Dead

Situation: despite a factory reset, I have no audio function, input or output - except via bluetooth, and even then BT won't support everything. The onboard speakers won't play audio for any app, including phone calls. The onboard mic won't pickup audio for any app, including phone calls. The same goes for the Google Assistant, which just says, "can't reach Google at the moment.". A wired headset will not play audio or pickup audio for any app. My bluetooth headset will play the audio from the YouTube app. However, on a phone call I can't hear the other person and she can't hear me. My podcast app (BeyondPod) will play audio, but only via my BT headset. Google Assistant doesn't work even with bluetooth.
I have an audio recording app ("Audio Recorder" by Sony). When I try to record audio (whether using onboard mic, wired mic or BT mic), it says, "Error - Could not start recording. Another app is using the microphone." However, no other app (that I know of) is using the system mic. In fact, I went into Settings \ app permissions and revoked microphone permissions from every single app, then tried to use Audio Recorder - it said it needed permission and I gave it. So at that point, it should be the only app with mic permission. Then I tried to record again, but it again gives me an error that another app is using the microphone.
And... it gets even weirder. Google Play Music (where I have a paid subscription) says, "Music temporarily unavailable - Music is temporarily unavailable. Be sure you're playing your collection on only one device at a time." Note: I am not playing GPM on any other device. When I open GPM on my Windows computer and try to play there, it says, "Unable to play music. Your music is temporarily unavailable from this device. Please try again later" so there's something weird with my Google account that (probably) has nothing to do with hardware or software on my Nexus 6P. And FWIW, I only ever listen on this computer and this Nexus 6P phone and I'm not actively listening on either device. In fact, there are no other "authorized devices" on my account.
All of this happened today after my battery was replaced by a local repair shop. (I had the dreaded, oft-reported "sudden shutdown" problem where my Nexus 6P would suddenly and without warning shut down at around 30-40%). After hours of futzing around trying to diagnose and repair this on my own, I took it back to them to check their work. They checked all connections and were adamant that they had not failed to reattach any ribbon connectors and hadn't damaged any hardware while replacing the battery.
I am more than freaked-out-puzzled and flumoxed over this. It makes no sense. I can't imagine a way to damage hardware that would explain this. Then again, for a software problem to happen at exactly the same time as a hardware change (or damage) seems very unlikely. And I have done a full factory reset. And then there's the weird issue with Google Play Music everywhere.
I don't know what to do or try next and I'm beyond frustrated. Please offer troubleshooting suggestions.

I'd be even more adamant that the sound and mic were working phone before they opened it, and stopped working immediately afterwards. Quite suspicious . My guess is the daughterboard or ribbon cable to it were damaged during repair or not seated correctly. But to be sure you should flash the factory image from Google's site to completely rule out a software issue. Shine a flashlight in all ports looking for debris, especially the headphone jack. Also try disabling the camera app then rebooting. Just wondering, is it still quick charging?
That sucks bro is it a reputable shop that fixed your phone? Maybe you should get a second opinion if you can't get it to work.

It's entirely possible that the tech broke something, but I've been taking my family's devices to him for years. I trust him. He might be trying to cover his tracks, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

That was my guess and that's what I told him when I went back to the shop. He took the back off and showed me the ribbon cables firmly attached. I didn't look through a magnifying glass, but all seemed in order. Maybe tomorrow after I've slept and can see better, I'll look again, this time with a magnifying glass.

I think this is my last idea without opening the phone. Try disabling the headphone jack with this app. I tested and it does work on 8.0.1 6P https://play.google.com/store/apps/...settoggle&hl=en&rdid=com.bjemtj.headsettoggle
You could root and disable the noise cancelling mic on the back from build.prop. Long shot but worth a try I guess.
Same issue... Solved
I had the same issue after replacing my Nexus 6P battery by myself. After the new battery went in, everything looked fine, until I received a call... no audio. Youtube, music, videos... no audio with and without headphones.
Some suggested consecutive 5-6 restarts, which didn't solve it. Other suggested different apps to change settings, but that didn't work for me either.
I suspected a loose connection. It seemed like the phone was not detecting the mic and speakers. I checked the cable that goes over the battery, and made sure all connectors were properly plugged in. This was not it.
I was really careful with removing the back cover plates when I first disassembled the phone. I used a soldering heat gun at relatively low heat, so I suspected that something may have gotten messed up at the top (camera) or bottom (charging port) areas. I removed the headphone jack and proximity sensor, then reassembled them. I then removed the PCB at the bottom (charging port) and noticed that it connects to the bottom speaker through spring loaded pins. I think that this was the culprit: It was not making a good connection to the speaker. It worked perfectly fine after I assembled everything together again.

Yes, thanks for sharing these images. I suspect pins 7 and 8 were not making good contact with the speaker.
Before I read @wmadwmad's post, I ordered another 6P off of Swappa. I'm not going to try to cancel out that purchase, but after it arrives, I'm going to take my existing 6P apart well enough to look at the daughterboard and see if I can get my existing phone working again. I might even order a new daughterboard ($14.39) and lower speaker board ($12.99) from GPD. If I can get it working again, I may keep it as a spare or sell it on Swappa myself. Hmm....
I really need to wait until the replacement phone arrives before tearing into the existing phone. Must be patient... which is my poorest skill.
Hi guys, I think I solved the problem.
After a factory reset, my phone didn't play any sound from the speakers (neither the top nor the bottom), couldn't record anything from the mic, couldn't record any type of video with the stock Google camera ("Can't connect to the camera" or 0:00 seconds long videos) and YouTube acted weird sometimes.
I spent to days looking for a solution, and I understood that the problem was in the headphone jack. It remains triggered as if there were headphones inserted, someone resolved inserting and removing a real device in the headphone jack 3 or 4 times, but it was not my case.
I took the phone apart, physically disconnected the headphone jack and then rebooted the device. All the problems are gone! The sounds came back perfectly from both speakers, the camera can now record video and the mic is working. After this test I turned off the phone, reconnected the headphone jack, rebooted and still no problems. The headphone jack works fine too, and YouTube has no problems reproducing videos.
I even tried two factory reset and everything is still working fine! I hope to be helpful to someone, this procedure has solved my problem!

Yes, sorry for my bad english. I've corrected
Firstly, thanks for your solution. However it doesn't work for me.
When I tried to play music, it will show the message that audioFX stops running. And of course, all sound has gone. Even mic is not working.
Everything happened after my replacement of battery. Maybe I did something wrong in the procedure of replacement.
I tried to disconnect headphone jack, and daughter board and reconnected them finally. But nothing changed, it doesn't work at all. Does somebody encountered the same problem and found the solution? Just give me some suggestion please.:crying:

yeah, I've tried what you said. Unfortunately, it's not useful. Now, I believe there's something wrong with my motherboard. By the way, my phone's camera doesn't work well, too. The problem may be beyond my repairing ability.
Hi. Yes, there is another possibility actually. It depends whether you're somehow having trouble with the accelerometer(screen rotation) too.
If this is the case, then I can tell you from personal experience that you might be having issues with the ribbon cable which runs behind the volume buttons, almost all the way on left side of the device. The engineers who designed the phone made an absurd decision as to render this simple ribbon cable as one of the critical connections in terms of Audio and accelerometer as I mentioned.
I had a spill once and though going through the insides and the board with a %99 alcohol, and cleaned throughly, the only function hasn't returned was audio and ability to make calls regarding to that. I did find some threads with almost same complaints that time and figured it out by replacing the cable from a broken variant(parts were not readily available on eBay by then).
So give this a go and write back if it actually turns out to be the culprit the way it was for me. And go easy with the cable in case you will need to replace it, start with the module-ish ends sitting on thr bezel first.

Now that you mention it, I did have issues with Camera not functioning, opening black screen either when that happened. Especially the front cam, seems like the symptoms do match. Give it a try and report.

thanks for your suggestion, but I find little information about the ribbon cable behind the volume button. So I want to post some pictures to check if I understand your suggestion well.
And if it is just the cable you mentioned, what should I do now. (I'm new here)
Yep, that's it. I would start by checking the connectors in the mobo, if that doesn't help, go eBay a new one, I doubt it would break the bank. Remember to check if your symptoms actually matches with what I said before everything. Gl.
