Is there anyway to have a custom text message ring or a custom alarm ring?

um...for what/where?

PS Generic answer: sure!

Yes. But first, a suggestion (actually two):
You'll get a much better/faster response if you make your thread title more descriptive... "T-Mobile MDA" could mean anything! And in a forum dedicated to this device, it's sort of redundant.
And for the second suggestion... well, not to give you grief, but your question is *very* basic. You could probably figure it out by reading the manual, or poking around on your MDA. Not a subject really worthy of its own thread.
That said, here's the answer:
Go into Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications. There are two tabs; play around with what you see there. You can set sounds to most things that you do or that happen on your MDA. If you have a custom or special sound that you want, copy the sound file into the My Documents folder on your MDA; and then you will be able to select it in the Play Sound selection box on the Notifications tab.

Okay, sorry about the title, newbie issue.
But please don't assume that I haven't read the manual. Yes I have already done numberous times what you have suggested, I have plenty of files, but for some reason custom files are only compatible for ring tones. So unless you can provide me new information without being condescending as to the simplicity of the question, then don't provide anything.
Sorry for my tone, it just goes back to the saying about assuming.

New sms Tones
What you need to do is to put the sound you are after, in the form of a wav file into the windows folder on your device. It then appears in the drop down list in "Sounds & Notifications".
You can get some good tones from http://www.spbclub.com/index.php . You will need to register but they also have some great tips there to.
Hope this is of use.

OK, sorry... I really didn't mean to condescend or patronize.
Ixtana's post was good: Have you tried WAV files instead of MP3s?

MP3's as Ringtones?

I have copied over some MP3's onto my MDA and would like to use them as ring tones however I am anable to see them in the list when I try to assign the new tones. Does anyone know how to do this?
OK, here's what you do.... You move your mouse to the area above your post in this thread. You will notice in blue writing a button called "Search" (it has a little magnifying glass beside it, just in case you get confused). Now click on this button. In the search box you type MP3 RINGTONE and choose the option to match all words.
Now go through the list of dozens of posts made by people asking the same question. You will have no problems finding your answer and if you did this first you wouldn't have to wait for a sarcastic reply like mine.
many appologies - thanks for help - though 1 liner saying "use search - existing topic" would have been adequate
Just copy the Mp3 file to the /Windows/Rings folder and you should now see them in the list.

Message sounds?

My first post in this incredible forum, I have all ready found so much help here and are most thankful, please keep it up.
Is it possible to make your own message sounds and use them when recieving text messages etc.
If possible at all what format should the file be in (mp3 wav)?
Tried with an mp3 placed in the windows folder it seems it cant find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not an expert so hopefully one will reply, but I think they have to be .wav and I think they have to go in the \windows\rings folder.
cheers

Actually, you are 1/2 right, they need to be wavs, but they go directly into windows, not in the rings folder.
Steve
Yep steve is correct the sound file will need to be a .wav and place into the windows folder, ring tones can be mid,wav and so on and they are placed into the rings folder within windows.
Sound file converter???

You might try Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It's a free download. I use Sound Editor in Roxio's Media Creator 8 -- one of the MANY useful tools in that program.

YW -- (but I'm a GAL -- not a guy)!! LOL!! But, that's ok -- none of my friends can believe how "techy" I am, either. But, I'm the first one they come running to with a problem. Go Figger!!
Cheers all,
You keep refering to ring sounds, I am looking for Sounds for alarms and recieved messages, and alerts in general.
But I will try it now with wav files in stead of mp3.
Manindesert,
I'm using Sound Forge 7, but then again I really need it for all my music stuff, so give Audacity a shot.
Update Works fine with alarm and message sounds, thank you all.
Is there any way, hack or otherwise, that will allow you to point your rings/sounds to your SD card? Thought it would be nice to free some space and stop having to move files on and off the card. I change my ring tone with my mood
Javahater,
I've been loking for a hack/program/setting that will do that, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, all SMS & ring tones must be located in main memory!
But there's a possibility to create a program that will browse a folder of ring tones on SD card & once u select a tone, it will be copied to main memory (and of course erase the old default tone from main memory) & will set this new file as the default ring tone for the phone.
Javahater and Ezzkht,
Maybe you should look here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks scroll down to this "ANY FOLDER RING TONES"
You will need a Registry Editor like Total Commander 2 or PHM Regedit
Hope this helps
Javahater,
Have been trying above solution for about an hour, seems that this solution doesn't work under WM5, or at least it doesn't make any difference if you change the folder or not (it only points to windows not windows\rings)
Will have to keep looking.

AGREED !! I've got WM2003SE tried the steps mentioned http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks no use.......it still picks up the default folder from \windows\rings, where as I am pointing it towards \Storage Card\Sound\ not working
ok just double checked.....in sounds and notifications options it goes to \windows\rings folder.....but I have o2 plus installed as well...and in o2 plus sounds and notifications options it points me to \Storage Card\Sound any ideas ?
Ezzkht,
Happy t worked for you, can't say the same for me.
Well it is getting more and more weird, when I look in my registry it only points to \windows\ not even \windows\rings\, despite this it still manages to pick up ringtones/sounds in the rings directory, and all sound files placed in the root of the SD Card(go figure).
I'm out of ideas right now, but am still looking for a solution and will be back if I find one.
I just used Resco Explorer with the registry editor add-in.
It worked with me without a soft-reset!
What device do you have, Mike?
Maybe some nice sounds
Hello everyone!
It's a little bit off topic, a little bit not
My advice: SD card is not really a good place for sounds, at least in my case. Why? Sometimes it happened that when I got a phone call, instead of my nice ringtone I've heard the standard one. I think it has sth to do with powering up SD card while changing from standby mode. It's just my impression.
Secondly: I'm looking for some nice SMS ringtones, not the funky ones... I'm getting a lot of messages and it's really boring if you hear "Heeeeellooooo! Your message is coooooomingggg!" every now and then. I will appreciate if you could share your ringtone with me

Changing Sounds of Notifications - such as "Message Sen

I searched the registry, found nothing, searched through some folders and found nothing either.
So as the subject says, is it possible to change these types of sounds? I've got some great sounds in mind. E.g. the sonic the hedgehog ring, for this event in particular.
... For new text I have the sonic 2 - 1 up sound
If you could help that would be great!
Hay there, yep this can be done, thou first you need the new message or notifcation clip to be a .wav file type, so you need to convert the items to wav first.
Once you done that place the newly converted wav file into the windows folder, not into windows>rings like you would do for ringtones.
Then goto settings, and notifcation and sound menu and select the new one there.
Hope this helps.
Ooo
I've been trying to figure this out, how could I change the sound that plays in my ear for callwaiting? lol i feel stupid because I can't figure this out!!!
Thanks!
Yup, I am not too happy in this realm as well. My busy tone sounds like a Modem that is trying to handshake, and that is when it decides that it is going to alert me. I would really like to swap out some of that stuff.
I beleive my expertise will come in handy here
There are many sounds which can be changed which ARE NOT visible in the "Sounds And Notifications" control panel. They can be accessed by pointing your reg editor of choice to...
"HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds"
We'll take the busy tone as an example...
Navigate to "HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds\BusyTone"
In there you'll see:
(Default)..................(value not set)
Catagory..................InCall
Script.......................apr
Sound......................HTCBusy.wav
Change the sound one to any file on your pda. (Must be an mp3 or a wave file) (Include the full path if the sound file isn't in "/windows") The changes should take effect immediately, if they don't you've not done it correctly...
Hope this helps you all...
Note: To my knowledge, you can't change the message sent tone, sorry...

Changing the sound when message comes ?

Hi,
How can i replace the sound when message comes with an mp3 ? It only accepts midi i think.
Thanks
Put the tone in /windows/rings folder or root of storage card.
Buy an iPhone. Thats the only way for people like you.
If u r usin WM then copy .wav file in the windows folder and then change the notification sound from notifications.

The guy asked a question, don't be a such ****.
Message sounds can also be selected if the .WAV is stored in /Storage Card/My Documents too. This folder works for incoming call alerts and other alerts too (except Alarm tones, they have to be n /Windows for some reason!).
With my tones in my card's My Documents, and my .tsk homescreens in my card's root directory, no need to copy files after a ROM flash!

So let me guess - when you got your first HTC device you were a genius from the outset????? I think not Einstein, cut the person some slack and help - if you can that is!!! Otherwise, hold your tongue / fingers otherwise you may learn that there are others within these forums that can be equally smarmy!!!
To answer the question - you can look at asim.khans response, it is the same way that I managed to do this very thing.
Good luck.
thanks guys,
I'm sorry I couldnt reply instantly. I didnt know a wav file can be selected for a message ringtone. I wanted to select an mp3 file to be a message ringtone, I was just wondering maybe an application might change the settings and make it possible.
For the IPhone isseu, I dont think it's good for me because I love my HTC and I dont prefer iPhone, I used an iPhone for a couple days (I'm kinda nerd) and I prefer installing and uninstalling applications, trying new things, writing some little applications for my phone. It's the fun part, not playing with your fingers
Thanks for the replies

Word! Couldn't agree more.

so i've got it, some questions about softwares and ui

1. is there a way to increase the font size beyond the windows restriction?
2. I've tried pdastats program to give me more detailed view for such system stats like battery, memory, ram, etc but it didn't work, the icons were too small, even smaller than the start menu icons; any good alternative? especially for battery, ram, and storage?
3. how to turn on sms delivery report permanently?
4. what's the best registry hacker?
5. how to change ringtones, sms tones, etc with my files? does it support midi files?
6. what's the best phone profiler app?
7. is there an easy way to transfer contacts from se m600i to x1?
8. how to access symbols like + from hardware keyboard?
9. how to uninstall panels completely from system?
that's all for now, now I want to tell u about the good and the bad about x1 for me so far:
10. my pin lock bypassed @startup but then when i want to call suddenly it kick in! i'm worried if thats prevents me from receiving calls and smses unexpectedly?
+ powerful, highly customizable, great screen, god battery
- very hard to grasp for non geeks lol, fonts too small, panels are crap, no unique softwares, not even a pouch supplied for a device this expensive?
It's a bit rude to ask so much without so much as searching for these topics first. Most of the answers could be found in a couple of minutes.
Push the blue key to get to the blue symbols on the keyboard.
Yeah, rude to say the least. RTFM please...
sorry if I was rude, but I'm sure most of my Qs weren't asked before (I'm reading this forum everyday)
help please?
Most of your questions are generic to WM and not in the X1 section. You should be able to find the answer if you search within forum.xda-developers.com (or even google)
For Panel, you can't without modify the rom. But you take have to stop loading by remove the shortcut at /Windows/Startup

You just have to get used to push the phone button when the todayscreen is up after starting. Then you can have another go with entering the PIN.
