where can I find a manual on the net. - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have just purchased a imate Jas Jar.
Where can I download a copy of the manual.
Can I use any usb to mini usb cale to sync (ie motorola v3 usv cable)
Oh by the way the units not hot, but is a customer return to a shop I work at and was refunded with no software, cables or instruction manual.
Up to this point i have had my fair share of palmtops, starting with palm pilots, philips nino, psion 5,Hp hornada, ipaq 1910 gave to my bro coz wanted wireless and then ipaq 1950 and now the mighty Jas Jar.
Assuming I am starting from scratch.
I`ve seen alot of stuff about rom upgrading and bt switching off and needing to be redone(patch)
When i got it , it was running ver slow I have uninstalled skype and backgammon any other tips will be appreciated
If anyone has any useful links and what benefits could they post in this thread.
i also play battlefield 2 so if your into that let me know too.
Cheers
Stang

Please, put just a tiny bit of effort in it and use google next time :/

BlueTooth Internet

Yo!
I have a PC at home connected to the interent & I have a BlueTooth USB Dongle plugged in.
Simply (yeah, right) how do you configure my home WinXP Pro PC & my Xda Exec such that the Xda Exec can browse the internet using the home PC internet connection over a BlueTooth connection????
I have spent all day trawling forums & internet, but any reference made to Windows operating system does not seem to relate to the one I have installed??!?!?!?!???!
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
Andy
(PS I have manage to create a 'partnership' between the two, but that's all.
Won't ActiveSync 4.1 do this now? I've got my XDA Mini S connected to my laptop via BT right now and I can get Exhange email and surf the Web without WiFi or GPRS as my Laptop is connected to the internet
No special settings required...
However, makesure you pair your phone from your PC for BT Active Sync support... if you already have a pairing delete it on both the PC and Phone and repair etc etc...

erm, Okeey dokee, piggy in a pokey.....
Exactly, in words of less than one syllable, how do you do that.
Assume nothing, as I know nothing.
I have been pulling my hair out & shouting at everything ALL day trying to get this sodding thing to work... BT ActiveSync support <- what is that??? Is this the golden goose I'm missing?!?!?!?!
So far I have managed to, but have now lost a very unstable internet connection (that GPRS kept constantly trying to overrule) I've been messing with COM ??? for the last 2 hours (my latest discovery) but (for whatever utterly unknown reason) I simply CANNOT get my PC COM port to be in an acceptable range (i.e. COM<=9)
ARRRRRGGGGGG!!!!
You are one LUCKY little bunny if this 'just worked' for you!!!!
well done
Andy
1. Download and install ActiveSync 4.1 from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx
Follow the instructions you will need your sync cable
While you do that I'll erm go write it all down
Hey thanks m8.
Jolly decent of you ol' bean.
BTW ActiveSync 4.1 slapped in already...
BRB
Andy
OK went to write the stuff and thought I'd unpair mine need to make sure I can get the connection back seems that somthing is remembering pairing somwhere.
Gimmie a few more mins think I'll need to reset phone to get this to work TBH...
Oh and you should not need any COM ports defined in Local or Client as Active Sync creates one...
Yes hard reset fixed the problem.... so you will need to do that too I guess as it seems not to work as somehow the AS link to the phone gets ignored...
Sec should upload a Word Doc.
Cool
I am learning >many< things about BlueTooth USB Dongles.
All of them dodgy to say the least.
One biggy is removing the Microsoft driver from the PC (& issues concering COM port assignment). Once this is done, install the correct driver. THEN DO NOT USE THE DONGLE IN ANOTHER USB PORT.
Poor, poor, POOR programming.....
Andy
Here it is... A bit ragged but what you expect!
Now I gotta fix all my phone back hehe
The key thing is the Phone should show ActiveSync as a service on the PC if it only shows Serial Port it ain't going to work.
Thank you VERY much.
I'll have a look & get back for feedback.
Regards,
Andy
BTW,
This'll make you laugh.
BT.... For about an hour there I was in 'phone mode' (and why not). aka British Telecom (my excuse: I've been trying to unravel anachronims ALL day!)
Then it finally dawned on me. BT. BLUE TOOTH
Dozey sod!
Andy
ROFL
Well I got my phone back up and did sommit similar as I had reasigned I.E. button to OK and was wondering why I.E. kept popping up lots
[email protected]
Their marketing guys must have had a field day with this device.
(The stuff I design has only 9 buttons on it and Jesus, don't even mention marketing to my team - they all get nervous ticks).
Andy
Dunno how you cope with the weight of the Exec but tis nice
Look at my sig.
For the price I got it for I couldn't give a flying fart how much it weighs...
Anyway the mobile phone part of it is just for kicks (I hide myself on the very rare occasions that someone rings me when I'm out because I feel an utter pratt with that lump glued to the side of my nut. Note to self: must get a headset... hold on these are BlueTooth devices as well... arrrrrgh).
For the 2 weeks I've had it since fixing it, mainly used it for:
Showing off.
Mentioning how much I paid for it, and then showing off some more.
Playing 'Age of Empires', Quake, Doom, Tetris, Worms on the Bog. (did I say 'worms'??? )
Fiddling with 'WiFi' connections to the internet (at Work)
Fiddling with 'BlueTooth' Connections to the internet (at Home)
Working out why someone has decided the red 'X' now does NOT shut a program down.
And ultimately used it as a thing to be shouted at.
Weight?? It's lighter than my ZX Spectrum - Kids of today!

I have a few unusual problems

Hello!
I've just got the MDA Pro which I've bought on an online auction. It generally works, but I have a few problems with it...
First of all, I got it with no charger apart from the USB cable... is it supposed to be like that?
Second, I didn't get any CD with drivers, and when I connect it to the computer, it asks for a driver... I tried looking for the drivers online, but I couldn't find anything. Where can I get them?
Also when I started it for the first time, I got a screen saying "Test Only, Not For Sale".... this is weird!
Another thing is a strange version number. The ROM version is ok, I think... it's 1.30.68 WWE. But the Radio version is 0.00.00  However, the phone seems to work well....
The last thing is that the MDA has a German keyboard, but an English ROM, so some of the buttons are wrong... for example, I press Fn+2, which should give me a ", but I get a @ instead. Is there some program which changes the keyboard layout in the system?
All in all, I like my new MDA, but I'd like it more if I could at least connect it to the computer, so that I can install things on it. Right now I can copy stuff to my MDA using a SD card, but I can't install programs that way
Hi Starlight, welcome to the board.
Be wary of what you buy on online auctions
1. Charger cable - it does come with a mains charger normally, but a USB lead will be fine, if slower. But you can buy one on ebay for around £4.
2. You shouldn't need the drivers that are first asked for when you plugin. Just click "no this time" or something, and it'll shut up if you have appropriate user rights on your PC.
Then, you need to go to microsoft.com and download ActiveSync. Ideally disconnect the pda first, install, and then plugin usb again, and everything should recognise itself and you'll be away.
Note - using the sd reader method is much faster in any event, for large files like films.
3. Test only sounds odd. Sounds like you're using a test rom, I've not seen it before. Is it every time you boot, or just in use itself, or just the once etc?
4. Radio 0.00.00 means the phone was once network locked, and has now got Buzz's special rom on it, used to unlock it to simunlocked. Read around on the board about this should it be necessary, but basically, find your operator and flash it ASAP with a nice official rom. 0.00.00 shouldn't do any harm, but it was only a special rom for unlocking.
5. Keyboard - I think some other guys have solutions on this on the board. Worst (or best?) case, use an essential app called PQz.
V
I can answer some of your questions:
- mine came with a charger that you can plug in the mains + the usb cable
- you don't need a driver, just download active sync 4.1 from the Microsoft site, install it, THEN plug your device in (obviously that should have come on a cd)
- regarding the rom 'test message', looks like someone sold you a prototype. I can be a good or a bad thing. Hopefully you can flash the rom and upgrade it to a 'standard' model.
Good luck!
Thanks for the answers!
Wow, a prototype... well, that explains why it was so cheap! It was cheaper than other MDA Pros, that's why I bought it.
I've downloaded ActiveSync 4.1, but it said that I need Service Pack 2, so now I'm downloading a 272 MB SP2
As for the charger, I think I'll buy something like this: http://photos.allegro.pl/photos/oryginal/10/1092/109247/10924799/109247999
It's supposed to be an universal charger for everything which can be charged by an USB cable, so I hope it will work
I'll try to look around the forums for something about the keyboard...
Sorry for the double post, just wanted to add something...
I got a CAB version of some registry editor and changed some keyboard settings, and it works well now!
The SP2 is 53% downloaded, and I have to install it before I install ActiveSync to connect the MDA to the computer...
As for the "Test Only, Not For Sale" message, it appears on the startup screen after a reset... and there's a i-mate logo under it. So I guess my MDA must have been flashed before, because there's a T-Mobile logo on it...
Thanks for the udpate. Glad to know you managed to make work ok in the end!
I still have a big problem with ActiveSync... please check my other thread here

USB input on Universal broken

Hi all,
yesterday my Universal fell from the table on the ground, and it fell directly onto the USB cable connector, which was plugged into the device at the moment. So now, the USB port on my Universal is acting pretty weird, it moves from side to side and it accepts the charger cable only under a very specific angle, so it is pretty difficult to plug the charger cable in correctly. I am going to get it repaired soon, but I want to backup my data first. The problem is, that the broken USB doesn't let me connect the device to my PC, as even if the status LED lights up as if it was connected and charging, I get the "device not recognised" error on my computer. Does anyone have an idea that could help me please? Thanks a lot in advance,
Longlife

I would say download the trial version of Spb backup, and copy the CAB installer to your SD-card via an card reader on the PC. This way you don't need the USB connection. You can make a self-extractable full backup, just make sure that you have the same ROM installed before restoring. I hope this helps .
oh then get it fixed lol
i paid £10 for mine to be fixed (came straight off main board) from a local phone repairers

Yeah, I'm going to get it fixed for sure but I don't want to risk losing my data if the mechanic did a hard reset or something.
Same problem, without the fall
My USB connector started acting up a couple of days ago. It's strange, because I dropped it once, but worked fine afterwards. Now, I need to jiggle the cable aruond for a bit before it actually makes contact
What do you think, how long does it take for them to fix it in a repair shop. Could I possibly wait for it to be finished?
I would suggest getting a Universal Battery Mobile Charger to charge the battery and a USB bluetooth adapter for the computer to sync.
Then if you decide to get it fixed just make sure it's from a reputable repair center. After the repair, I still suggest using the mobile Charger and USB dongle to charge and sync to lessen the stress on miniusb. Goodluck!
Reputable it will be! The T-Mobile shop I purchased it at!
And how long do you think it will take for them to fix it(the repair shop is right in the back of the store...)?
Four days ago, I took the phone to a one of a very few QTEK services in the Czech Republic and they promised to make me an price offer of the repair. They sent me an e-mail yesterday, and the price was..14,026 CZK, which is about 500 EUR accoridng to today's rates. They said that the whole motherboard needed to be replaced, because one part of it had been nicked. Anyway, I bought the phone on ebay for about 400 EUR and I am not really going to pay such a huge amount of money for the repair (I can get a brand new Universal for this price..or even cheaper). Do you think it's possible that the service was either mistaken or lied to me to make a higher profit? And, if a part of the motherboard really is snapped off, do you think it would be possible to fix it somehow? Thanks a lot,
Longlife

Thanks, if I don't manage to get it fixed (see my last post) I'll probably do that. btw, I didn't see a BT connection option in my ActiveSync (and I think I have the latest version), do I need a special plugin or a different piece of software for the sync? Thanks,

sorry, for writing in slovak, its easier and faster and longlife understands.
nazdar oprava tu v UK stoji asi 20gbp, odporucam ti v cexax najst nejaky mobil servis, tu na ftp najdes man na rozobratie uniho, a skus si cez net kupit usbfemale(vsetky su standartne). xod do sevisu a skus ix ukecatnex ti to opravia.btw mas ho v zaruke este?
If you want to use BT to sync, you'll need to map virtual serial ports to your adapter(this can be usually done from within the adapter's program, like BlueSoleil), and the configure ActiveSync to accept connections from that port. Afterwards, you need to start ActiveSync on your MDA, and select "Connect via Bluetooth", and voilá.
The catch is, you can't sync music this way. But that might be the smallest of your worries

Hi,
Can you please explain how to do it in BlueSoleil?
I have BlueSoleil (legal), and I've been reading, and trying everything, for hours, without success.
I've managed to get a bt connection between my laptop and my Universal, and one of the available service is indeed ActiveSync. And I can see AS trying to connect, when I click on "Connect via Bluetooth" in my PPC. But then it just stops, and my Uni says it didn't find a partnership with ActiveSync.
Any help, please?
TIA

Initially you have to open a COM port for the Bluetooth Serial Settings..and then when you open the COM port (like COM 5 or something), go to active sync Connections Settings and then check "Allow connections to following" and then choose the COM port of the Bluetooth Serial Settings (like COM 5 depending on what COM port you put the BT serial settings).
This might buy you some time till prices go down and you could have it repair for lower price.
GOODLUCK!

Thanks Just one more thing..I will probably not be able to flash new ROM via BT, or will I?
Sorry no flashing via bluetooth only via USB. Not sure though if you can do it via SD if somebody builds an image of the ROM you want in SD then use that but not familiar with it on Universal.
Hello
I hqd the same problem happening to me : the connection between the mini USB and the motherboard were severed. I used stripping wire to redo the connections, and hot glue to make sure they don't break again.
You can certainly do the same. Please tell me if you need a spare mini USB connector to replace your broken one (got one ! you can also find one in any cheap USB reader)

Hi,
many thanks for your idea! I recently gave the phone to my grandmother's former student, who is an amateur electrotechnic. Hopefully, he will manage to mend it and if not, I will surely try what you have suggested. Just one thing..don't you need a special screwdriver to get into the phone?
Thanks, Longlife

There are instructions on how to take the phone apart on the FTP server. Follow them carefully!

My Trinity and Mac hate eachother...

Hey guys,
Any thoughts on the following problem:
My european HTC P3600 wont pair with either my MacBook or MacPro running MissingSync version 4...
I`ve tried both with USB cable and Bluetooth... the only thing left is to use some tinfoil between the phone and the freakin` power outlet of my two macs...
If anyone has ANY thoughts surrounding this strange lapse of communication between these two really great products, I would love to hear them. Expriences, tricks and encouragement is greatly appreciated!
Thanks and have a great night!
-Vespanator
p.s. Just some technical info for those who wonder: Running OS X tiger now... the phone was usually synced up with a Windows XP workstation via ActiveSync, and has not been tampered with after the jump over to a new MacPro workstation. Therefore an idea would maybe be to reinstall the os on the phone? Maybe? Anyways.
Same here, unable to sync between Trinity and Mac using missing sync. Try PocketMac Pro because of their promotion. But only with intermittent success.
Most of the time unable to find the device.
Is the option in "Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC" marked as enable (advanced network functionality)??
If yes, disable and try again.
M.a.s - Thank You!!
That cleared it ALL up! Thank you so much!! Have a great weekend!

Glad to know..
Great weekend for you too!

Repair / Replacement help

I have an xda exec, which i have had for over a year now and i have been very happy with it... until a couple of weeks ago the mini usb port detached itself from the mainboard :-( Ive read about it happening before on here... but i have no warranty now so im looking for anyone who can help. The mini USB port is also now damaged. I looked at re-soldering it back on but im not good enough to do that... I guess ideally im after another universal with a broken screen or something so as i can make one good one from 2 bad... and then save up a little more towards an athena...
Pocketpctechs will repaire it for $60(including parts &larbor)
Check out the links bellow
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~sessid~560175586~unit~O2_XDA_Exec-500~area~repairs.htm
Thanks for the link - really useful... im contacting them to see if they can supply a replacement mainboard to the UK as that is where im based, if not i can look at posting it over i guess... Many Thanks - Dave
i brought a stand alone charger that you pop your battery in! pain in the ass but if you have two batterys its all good then use bluetooth to sync and install your apps and files im in the UK too
Yeah, thats exactly what i have done in the short term... but after upgrading my old XDA IIs yesterday to Windows Mobile 6 i fancy seeing what sort of improvements are available for my Universal.
On a side question can you sync over wifi?
you used to be able to but there was security concerns so they removed it from activesync if you have an old copy of active syncc then yes...
