How do I know if I'm using HSDPA or not? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Newbie here.
I have a 838 Pro and have subscribed to Hong Kong's "3" 3G/HSDPA plan. The icon only reade UMTS on the phone. How do I know if the phone is using HSDPA during data traffic or not? I have goten 400kbps out of it (from Spb traffic monitor), is this HSDPA speed? If not, do I need to call "3" to activate HSDPA (if there's such a thing)?
BTW, I've already used Hermes Tweaker 1.1a to enable HSDPA.
Thanks in advance.

How to configure 3G?

Hi techies
I have recently brought a Cingular Connection with the data feature. The Data feature includes 3G service as well. However, I don't know how to configure 3G on my Imate-Jasjar. I have read at few places that there is some problem with the frequency bands in which 3G operates. So, just to add the info, I am living in washington in Redmond. Can anyone help me with this problem, How can I configure my Cingular 3G service on my Jasjar?
Thanks
As long as you have your phone settings on auto, it will automatically use 3g where it has a signal. The JasJar uses UMTS 2100, so I hope that's what is available in your area.

The Latest iMate Rom includes Operator CAB files.
You select your operation and it installs the settings for the selected operator in the Phone.
I have T-mobile NL. So by selecting it, it installed my acces point, MMS settings and GPRS Settings.
Other option is to go to the webside of your provider and find the options needed there.

I just checked the Cingular's website and found that Cingular has launched UMTS 1900 .
Is there any other way that I can get my jasjar work with UMTS 1900??
Thanks in advance
I'd like to know if anyone has 3g working on Cingular's network.
I don't think it can happen

Confusion about Cingular and 3G/U/H/G/E icon

I'm a little confused about the internet connection icons that vary according to ROM and carrier. If I'm on Cingular in the US what 3G technology is this? Is it UMTS or HSDPA? Also, which icon set would I need to properly display whether I'm on GPRS, EDGE, or the 3G network?

all 3G cingular towers in the US have been upgraded to support HSDPA. if your device can use HSDPA, and you're on a cingular UMTS tower, then you'll be able to take advantage of HSDPA. HSDPA activates and deactivates on the fly, so if you're not actively transferring data the device will shut down HSDPA and fall back to UMTS until data beings to move again.
if you are using a cingular 8525 with 1.34 ROM, you'll see "U" when connected via UMTS, regardless of HSDPA being active or not.
if you are using a cingular 8525 with 2.06 ROM, you'll see "3G" when connected via UMTS/HSDPA, or optionally (via registry edit) "3G" with UMTS and "H" when HSDPA is actived.
i hope that was semi clear...i tried!
wait a minute. ive got a U showing, but i have 3G with a 3G simcard, so if it doesnt say 3G, than im not getting 3G? ive always thought the U was 3G.

How to Differentiate between GPRS, EDGE, UMTS & HSDPA?

I am using Hermes, (Dopod 838Pro Hong Kong Version) with
ROM 1.23.708.4
Radio Rom 1.06.00.10
Protocol 32.37.7010.01H
The network I am using supports HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS where I have not subscribed HSDPA service.
When I was with my Prophet, I saw there were an "E" icon and "G" icon to differentiate between EDGE and GPRS network respectively. However, I only get "U" icon and
"G" icon to identify UMTS and GPRS connection respectively.
My question is
1. HOW TO FIND OUT THE "E" ICON FOR EDGE?
(I have tried the registry tweak EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon, but it was not successful)
2. IS THERE ANY "H" ICON FOR HSDPA CONNECTION?
3. IF I HAVE HSDPA SUBSCRIPTION, IS THERE ANY PROCEDURE TO CONNECT HSDPA / DISCONNECT HSDPA BACK TO UMTS?
Thank you very much!
I dont think you will get HSDPA with that radio. You will need to upgrade the radio rom at least (if not the OS too).

Oh yes, I do have HSDPA with that version of Radio ROM. There's no indication for HSDPA. You have to use FieldText.exe to check it out. Or simply browse a web site and note the download speed (I use Spb GPRS Monitor)

Just about all your questions have come up before!
So for example you will find references to this as the best speed test - all you do is tapit into your device browser:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
You'll find references to this info:
"G" - GPRS, GSM and EDGE
"U" - UMTS and HSDPA
You'll find there are tweaks for changing the non specific nature of the above.
Try that google sticky at the top of the messages list.
Cheers

Hi,
I am using the latest German HTC ROM on my Hermes
RUU_Hermes_QTEK_GER_2.15.257.1_104_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship.exe
This displays
G=GPRS
E=Edge
3G=UMTS
H=HSDPA

Orange SPV M3100 / HSPDA

All
After much trial and testing....Unless anyone knows different
The Orange SPV M3100 in its standard form does NOT display a H symbol when using HSPDA and there is no way of finding out if it does so..
I am using the latest ROM update from the Orange site..but no other mods have taken place onto the machine...
Can anyone confirm or deny further ?
Darren
HSDPA also needs to be provisioned by the carrier, are you POSITIVE that HSDPA is enabled or even present on your orange account? If they are anything like O2 they might only offer HSDPA on business accounts.
pretty sure i have it enabled..
Just wondered about other SPV M3100 in the UK ?
darrem
My understanding of Orange UK is that HSDPA would work if the cell-base had it enabled. I'm not aware of any restrictions as per T-Mobile and O2.
a question then for any SPV M3100...How do you know you are using HSPDA ?
Any screenshots from a Orange device or Vodafone device ?
Thanks all
darren

One way to check HSDPA is to run a speed test by running DSL Reports in your Hermes browser:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Works on a PC as well as a speed check if you pick higher file sizes.
On your Hermes:
speed
300-400 kbps = UTMS
500+ = HSDPA
You can also double check with Field Test available for download on the Wiki along with manual:
Field Test: Hermes Engineering mode

T-mobile HSDPA

Hi,
When you use WinMo 6.0 pro with 3G and HSDPA capable phone (I use the new HTC Kaiser), what would be the icon that is shown up if you are using HSDPA network?
Is it "3G" or "H" ?
Because in the user manual it said "H", however in some posts, people refer to "3G".
I use T-mobile NL (Netherlands), and never got "H" icon, I always get the "3G" icon The speed is not that impressive with high network latency.
Do I need to upgrade my SIM card to enable HSDPA?
Please if you can inform about this, especially if you use T-Mobile NL.
Thanks in advance.
Hsdpa == H (3.5g)
Umts == 3g
