8525 has no front camera - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

The rumors are finally debunked. The 8525 unfortunatley has no front camera:

that sucks... guess i can stop gathering all the reg values now... i wonder if its possible to buy the cam somewhere and put in on and mod the case.. oh well thats to much work that i dont have time for

We could start a rumor that certain serial numbers have the camera and these have been allocated to certain states only.
We then encourage people to get their drills out and use plenty of pressure as that TyTn's real solid. Now the thing is, what states don't we like, which ones have folks with the old Brain Alignment issue - Illinois?, Missouri? or maybe those Georgian boys???
Place yer votes here.

um yeah, i have one of the special serial numbers here in missouri and mine has a camera, just had to get a 1/2" drill and drill a hole straight through the phone, then when i was done i affixed a couple of mirrors angled in different directons on the back of my phone so that it reflects through the hole in the front of the phone, and voila my back camera now works in both directions...

WTF ... looks like a lot of people were right in buying the TyTN ..
But then how do we know that the pic is of a 8525? :hehehe:

Tell me, what can you use the front camera for at this time?
Is there any way to video conference in the USA?
No, right? It's more of a potential use right now and probably for the next 2 yrs, no?

Actually yes video teleconferencing does work on Cingulars net work. I was recently invited to a 3G training and got to see the demonstration from the Ericsson team.

Apps like CoolCamera are starting to show up which support the front cam .. And I think IM apps supporting mobile video conferencing are not that far away ... The next version of Skype is rumored to have it ..

Sure you can. There are a number of H.323 apps out there

Apparently, Cingular engineers are saying the system is capable of VC. This is interesting b/c earlier engineering sources stated here that the necessary QOS enhancements don't exist in the ericsson equipment they're installing.
Still, I bought my TyTN for it's front camera and the slew of video call enhanced VoIP apps that will be released in 2K7.
Hint: M$ is working on one of them....

The only video service will be the Video Share ( one way ) feature which will be available only on the LG CU500 in Jan-Mar '07. Unlikely VC will see the light soon.

I tried Resco Recorder, simply put, does not work.
I tried Vito Audio Notes, its also not working.
Any news on this? I am desperately in need of this to record argue converstation with gf because she likes to turn things around.
No possibility of recording calls on HTC devices simply because of legal issues they wanted to restrict it by making the drivers route the calls not through the OS and that's the main reason for not able to have an auto-answering machine software also.
I love Symbian for this reason alone.

Get a new g/f dude but if you really think a recorder will solve the problem,it may be time to get a new you...lol. just kidding dude and good luck
I loved being able to record convos on my Treo 755p. I would be going back to it but I like GPS on the mogul too much.
Sounds like you need a saner girlfriend and not spy software
I need this for everytime sprint says "Sure are our service is the best".

Don’t worry as soon as we understand any female SHE WILL MORPH AGAIN !!
4th and 20 from your own 5........PUNT!!!
I don't think it is a legal issue as someone posted. Many states allow you to record calls as long as at least 1 member of the party is aware, some states require more than 1.
I know my last PPCPE the wizard allowed me to record calls. Recording calls is not only for spying. I used mine alot when someone was giving me a phone number and I didn't want to go through the whole crap of opening the notepad, selecting free text etc.
It just seems the Mogul overall has been a dissapointment with me. I was HTC's biggest fan when the produced the first XDA for T-Mo with a 3.5" screen
RANT...
Talking about 3.5" screens what happened to them. I've literally stopped using all office mobile apps ever since they shrunk the screen down to 2.4 Excel Mobile is a pain. Pwoerpoint is manageable and Word...Well word mobil is only realistic with a device with a keyboard. I loved using transcriber but there is so little room to write on the 2.4" screen.
Are there any rumours of any 3.5" PPCPE in the works?

The only reason yu think the 3.5" were big is because you've become accustomed to the 2.4".
After the death of the handheld PC in the late '90's and bisth of the PPC. People couldn't belive that PPC's could be as small with their 4" screens. Then the 3.5" came and we were like wow, they shrunk it even more.
I personally think the reason HTC ditched the 3.5" was because PPC's had been regarded as business computers and in order to gain or expand their market niche they brought them down to the siz of cell phones.
Apple has brought the 'BIG' screen back with the iPhone. Since they seem to set fashion trends I'm hopefull.

One way is to use GrandCentral. You press 4 during the call. May not work well for an angry gf though because it announces that it is being recorded. You'll also have a new phone number. I have my grandcentral line forwarded to my mogul. Lots of features. I know this probably won't work for you but it is the only think I know of for recording that works well.

Thanks for all the "trying" to help guys. I really need this because gf keep changing her mind and story. I need something to show her that.."this is what you said 5 mins ago".....I am going nuts with this. And you know that girls also like to turn story around and make it as if it is your fault. Well need to record those too to study the psychology behind it.
I really like my mogul (had it about 2 weeks now) but the fact of the matter is I can barely read the screen! I put it on largest text size, and that works for some things, but not for many others. Everyone is not 21 years old! Time for designers to realize that.

Convert the Tilt to have a front-facing cam?

I have a Tilt, which (I'm sure most of you know) AT&T has intelligently decided to have HTC remove the front-camera from - ya know, the one that would make a video call possible...
Anyway, I found an HTC original TyTNII/Kaiser housing with the front bezel with the video 'hole' on it on CNN.CN for $70, and was wondering if anyone knows where I could get the camera portion of it, and if this conversion is possible? I already have Dutty's pre-departure WM6.1 ROM on the phone, so I'm anticipating that the ROM is capable of it - just not the phone.
Any success stories, testimonials, ideas, advice, words of caution or other?
TIA,
M
You know, of course, that the AT&T network doesn't support video calls -- that's why they didn't select the 2-camera version of the Kaiser.

No, actually, I didn't know that...I thought video sharing was possible with it...I guess I just assumed that meant even live video.
Well, nevermind this thread then!! Stupid AT&T.
Thanks!

Actually, it'd still be useful to know how easy it is to do it. Considering I'm currently using the Tilt in a country that does support Video calls...
i would be interested to know if this was possible as well
It would be great to know this, simply because it makes it easier to take self pictures and use your phone as a webcam. In fact, maybe we can get a seperate Kaiser 3 megapixel camera and stick it in that front cam area.
I personally think that it is not this easy to do and the costs propably would exceed the amount you saved by buying the Tilt Version of the Kaiser

Maybe...but to be honest, I bought 3 HTC's with cracked LCD's on Fleabay (8125, 8525, and the Tilt) for Under $400....then I fixed and resold the other two, and ended up with a 'Like-new' Tilt for about $120....Consdering what I would have paid new, I think I saved a lot more than just the difference between a new Kaiser and what I'm 'into' my Tilt for.
Sorry - just started fixing HTC's and felt the need to boast a little....
- M
Congratulations! Though changing the screens is trivially easy on HTC phones... all you need is a torx wrench and some courage...
so the quest continues.....does anyone have any inner knowledge of the tilt that can shed some light ?
A lot of guys upgraded the Cingular variant of the Blue Angel to add the missing back camera. Might want to check there for inspiration.
When you had the tilt open did you see a "socket" where the camera should be? If so then it might be as easy as the BA upgrade was in which case the hardest part will be finding the camera plug-in piece for sale.
If I'm not mistaken, when I changed out the case on my 8525 (Hermes) it had the "drop-in socket" for the front facing camera. I believe I even spent some time trying to track one down to plug in for the same webcam reason.
Just to shed some light on this topic.. all ATT varients are HTC boards and have the connector for the front facing camera. The only hard part is finding one.

yea same thing where could we get the front cam i just ordered the new case and want to get the camera. please pm me if you know where i can get one.
I remember in the hermes forum somebody had installed the forward facing camera on their 8525 and it was just plug and play, no soldering needed (i think theres also a thread at hofo). But obviously you'll also need to flash a WWE rom that supports video calling.
I was gonna do the same and buy the orange case from cnn.cn but the camera is nowhere to be found, i'm gonna shoot an email to cnn.cn other than that i'd suggest searching on ebay fora damaged tytn ii.
Also for video share, its going to be one way from the camera on the back. For example, if i video share call someone :S then they'd see what my rear camera is recording but i can't see anything from their camera.. i guess its just a way to milk us for our money.
Just out of curiosity, would you even neccessarily even need a Kaiser front camera? I'm guessing that any camera from the same spec from any HTC (and probably other brands) should work.
Well to be completely honest with ATT network, the front facing camera would allow a video conference call only in a 3G blanketed area due to the fact that it would be the same lines as a video share that ATT offers. It would require a simultaneous voice and data connection.
I have been thinking about doing this myself. I looked through the service manual and found that it listed the P/N as 54H00225-00M. I am not sure where to find it but possibly from a repair facility or something. I would love to have that front camera, hopefully someone will figure it out.
You wouldn't need the front-facing camera just for video calls. You could use it to take pictures of yourself when out with a group.
does at&t networks in the US even support this feature even if you get it to work?

Software to make video.. in background

Hi,
I was happy with my old nokia because it has a software that makes photo or video even if the program was running in background, so that it was invisible. And with my old nokia I was able to find the thief in my apartment (it was a friend of mine...).
Now that I have my new Diamond I cannot find a software that can take photo or make video in background, so that if someone will find my diamond, he cannot think that it is recording, and so he will never destroy my htc!!
Any ideas?
this is the dumbest idea ive heard, just purchase a cheap security camera, if not get a webcam and recording software. Even better how bout you don't leave your diamond alone so it cant be found, stole and destroyed like u say.

No, I cannot use other things.. I need something that could be placed everywhere in my house, and that is familiar, like my htc!
Look at these photos taken with my old nokia:
My cotenant cannot suspect of my htc if it seems turned off, and it cannot be stolen by my cotenant (because it is a too clamorous theft).
if hes your theif then put the htc down and start throwing some slaps, if u want you can easily set your diamond to record video but set the option under power in system to turn off display but still stay on
You should not post those pictures in public.
if the thief see your htc diamond, you think that he will let it and not take it?in that way,you will lose and your diamond
It's clear that you don't have a thief brain!! If you are my cotenant, you cannot steal something too big! It must be something that when you'll realize that it is stolen you may think "maybe I have lost it!!" and not "one of my cotenant has stolen it!!".
No? That's why I can use my phone to do this work.
Nowadays if you check the net, there are lots of spy cameras that comes in 1001 shape and sizes. You yourself will not even notice it after a while. Best is also get the wireless ones....wired is a no no...you might even get sued by the person you wanna take picture of.
Since the guy who is doing this is your friend, go and slow talk with that guy...have a beer and call it even...if he still insist in going in your apartment, then its time to spend on some padlocks.
Thanks to all, but we are in Diamond software forum, so we are off topic if we speak about spycam!
What is happening to me is not related to Diamond software. I know that there are other possibility than using my diamond, but I'm here to find a way to use the diamond!
so, please, keep in topic this thread.

You could still say but put a disclosure that it might not be the final ROM.
To be fair, the release date is just around the corner so we'll get more answers soon.
There's supposed to be another announcement on the 4th Nov, not sure what other details they can give but still going ot be interesting nonetheless.

Show you some photos? What of? The outside of the case?
I DO have one - even posted a photo of the battery in another thread. I just installed the final ROM on the HTCPedia site - which has fixed the issue with Panoramic Photos.
Not played too much with the final ROM tho...
The reason I can't say too much is because it was a test ROM and I don't want to say anything negative about it as it doesnt give HTC fair chance to correct the issues.
What do you want to know about the HTC HD2? I'll try to answer it as best I can - bare in mind, I am new to Windows Mobile (Last time I used one, was back in the days of the PDAs ).
Speaking as the OP, I'm actually not very intererested in people who claim to have an HD2 "on test"; the main motivation behind this thread is to identify places (e.g. shops) where members of the general public can go to get HD2 demos of their own. In the early stages of a phone's release cycle, even if a given chain sells the phone, any given branch may well not have enough of them to be able to offer demonstrations. If we can find which places do, that'll be a good start.

I want to ask about screen material..
Is it made a tempered glass or flexy-plastic ??
May I humbly suggest that we don't attack every single person who comes to the forum and says he has the device, immediately declaring his/her words to be a hoax? Each and every one of us can make their own judgment, believe what we read or not, but this thread is asking for user experience, and I simply don't see the point in discouraging people right away. Also, demanding proof is kind of silly. If I had the device and read this thread, I'd most probably just leave - I certainly wouldn't bother to take pictures of myself with the phone or prove that I have it in any other way.
We're all anxious to get our hands on the beast, but let's be reasonable!

Tempered glass - well it feels like the iPhone. I think it may have some kinda special coating on it - smudges show up, but in the morning they are gone (Pilkinson make some glass like that, I believe).
Plus it is capacitive.
When you factory reset it, the setup wizard is very similar to the Hero - asks you to test the typing etc, choose mobile operator, connect to wi-fi then set up GMail, Exchange or another email account.
You can remove items from the Sense bar - so if you dont use Twitter etc, they can be removed.

Will do - but won't it conflict with the SENSE UI?
That's exactly why you are asked to try running it - to find out whether it conflicts with Manila.
I think you'll need to disable it to run SPB Shell properly. Previously it was done in Settings - Personal - Items - uncheck TouchFLO3D.

one question I do have is about the notification LED.
on previous WM phones (I'm thinking of my Orbit in particular) there were two LEDs. These were used for notification of charging, power, sms, bluetooth etc.
the original HD only had one, and it was very small and hard to see
how big and easy to see is the LED on the HD2?
...is there something to win for the best OT?

Yeah I always found it pretty weird that some people were convinced that the HD2 carried a resistive touch screen when HTC themselves had gone on record saying that it was capacitive. Just proves how ignorant some people can be.
Got to try out the phone at the local expo over the weekend in Helsinki and pre-ordered one today. Was very impressed by the performance and looks of the HD2.

[Q] adding 1700 MHz antenna to Streak?

Hi all... apologies if this has been discussed... I did a search but couldn't find anything.
Is there a way to add a 1700MHz antenna to the streak hardware?
I figure since they made a few of the streaks with the 1700MHz antenna, there might be a way?
I also thought I would email the guys who did the tear down of the streak to get their opinion.
Thanks for any help.

Jenn on streak smart made a similar comment... "1) there's a string of evidence that a T-Mobile version of the existing Streak will eventually be released," in the 12-26 post at www.streaksmart.com
She doesn't give any details about what the "string of evidence" is... so I'm not sure what she's talking about... have you guys heard anything?
Maybe they will announce something at CES... I have so far not been able to make contact with anyone about soldering in a new AWS antenna... and may wait to see what happens next week.
If they are going to release a 5" Streak with Tmo I will wait... not sure about the 7" which apparently will be available thru Tmo from the get go... I had a Galaxy Tab for a while and altho I loved it... it was kind of big to carry around all the time... maybe the Dell will be lighter or thinner, who knows.

I sure keep my eye on streaksmart.com. And did read Jenn mentioning about TMo-US version of Streak, but that's about it.
I really want Streak to work with TMo which it does but EDGE is too slow.
Lets see what happens in next few days at CES.
Also, where would to get this "AWS Antenna"?
My thought is to get a broken phone with the right kind of antenna... it's kind of a long shot I know, in terms of it fitting in the Streak case... also, I note by googling that the antennas are attached to a cable, so soldering might not be the way.
I will wait to see what happens at CES and if there is no 5" Streak with Tmo antennas, then I will contact the guys that did the Streak tear down (and lots of other cell phone teardowns) to see if replacing the antenna with one that has 1700/2100 MHz is possible... since Dell made some of the units that way, somehow it must be... but I'm not sure if it would take that exact antenna or if another one could be used somehow... that is the question.

Theoretically you probably could. You'd have to get the hardware, which probably isn't too easy for the average consumer. Then you'd have to swap it out with what's in there already. Even if you get the hardware swapped and manage to not ruin anything else innside the phone, there's one minor hurdle: software. You'd have to have a radio that worked with 1700. If you swap out current hardware with what shipped in the test builds that were handed out as demo units, you could probably find that old radio. If you swap it out with something that's only AWS, you'll have to essentially build your own radio. At least, that's my understanding.
While it all may be theoretically possible, I think it's a gigantic waste of time, effort, and money. Try to pick up a demo unit that supports AWS. They gave those out in Texas, right? If memory serves...

Very few from the beta program in TX are AWS capable. Happy Hunting.

Streakr, you mean the 7" Streak or the 5 inch one?

The talk is about the 5" one right now. We should find out more about the 7" later this week. Don't get your hopes up on having 3G voice on that one though.

As long as they have 5" version which will work on TMo-US 3G bands, I am happy!
SoberGuy is right, kinda. You will need a new radio, although not in the software sense - the actual hardware that generates the RF signals, not just the antenna. Think of it as having a CB radio and putting a TV antenna on it - it won't make your CB transmit on TV frequencies.

Thx kd5uzz... so I'd need a radio and antenna... of course that makes sense that it would need something for receiving AND sending!
Since I origially posted this thread there have been some (unofficial) rumblings of the Streak 7 being released on Tmobile... so I am considering waiting for it. Also, Jenn on streaksmart has alluded to the "existing" version Streak being released on Tmo in 2011 as well.
And as I mentioned above, I have also heard about a "more than 5 in. " Palm tabphone called the Mansion that is planned for March 11 release (yeah, I know... subject to slippage of course).... that will be on Sprint... which would work fine too.
So I guess I'm not feeling the need to do a teardown/rebuild yet... but thx again for the input... I still think it can be done but I'm also dealing with some other issues at the moment.
You cant just swap antennas, the circuit board and the software must be able to support. If this was possible somebody would have figured it out by now.

I'm having hard time understanding what the heck they can do *after* it's out...
I'm not planning getting any tablet but if I'd do I'd just kill/disable whatever service/app I want - it's mine, period. Then if I want to use Skype or a SIP app, I will, period. Heck, I root it if I want.
