What is all this?

There are no really quick, good places to find out what is what when it comes to those nasty acronyms for different kinds of connections. SO, how do EDGE, UMTS, WCDMA, HSPDA, GPRS?
GPRS general radio packet service - basic data transfer
UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunications System
WCDMA Wide Code Devision Multiple access
EDGE Enhanced GPRS
HSPDA ?
I just found out that US TM is rolling out a 3G network, which I assume is going to be WCDMA, but they just (a few weekes ago) rolled out an EDGE network. I want a new phone, but I want to be able to use the max data transfer possible, in the future.
Can you use UMTS with and EDGE network? (UNIVERSAL mobile tel.....)
UMTS and WCDMA?
EDGE device on WCDMA?
WHat the hell is going on????
Please help me!!!

3G on HTC TOUCH HD In NYC

Not trying to start any problems with my first posting but, The 3G icon on my touch hd has change a few times during since I purchased it, Does anyone know if this has been caused by any changes with EDGE.

What do you mean by has changed a few times? You never got 3G in New York did you?

Are you really getting a 3G signal in NYC? If that's the case I'm buying one

My Edge (E)icon has turned to G on about 20 occasions since purchase two week ago.Its not a steady G but will last about two minutes and then goes back to E

Interesting that you posted this. I am using my THD in NYC and NJ areas with T-Mobile USA. I have also noticed that the "E" icon on my THD had changed to "G" at some areas in NYC. But I have not noticed any difference in the data speed.
I just thought that my phone is able to acknowledge the T-Mobile 3G signal, but does not have to facility to access it. I do not know the technicalities behind it.

Isn't the "G" icon for a slower connection than EDGE? i.e. GPRS

yes!!!! now we have firm confirmation that touch hd is capable of 1G and 2G (EDGE)

What this means is that us in the usa better hope that we can enable 3G on the HD soon.

ya. even if tmobile does require both bands, one for down and one for up, it'd be nice if only 1 workded (down) and we were able to at least be able to DL quickly or something. any speed boost is better than none

Just to throw it out there:
Don't know if it is 3G but my "E" changed to "G" on few occasions, for few minutes here in LA, CA (T-mobile). I didn't sample the connection speed, however; thus, wasn't able to tell any difference with the download speed. Edge is good enough for my usage, tbh.

G = gprs 1G which is not 3G and it's slower than Edge 2G....

When I look at the G settings
Its says GPRS,3G

You guys...these are the icons you'd expect to see on your HD for GSM coverage in order of speed:
G - Normal GPRS data
E - Enhanced Edge data
3G - 3G coverage
H - HSDPA, 3G turns to HSDPA on some networks while downloading data then switches back to 3G a few seconds after data use.
If you are seeing a G on the top bar, it means the HD is in the slowest GPRS data rate mode.

Thanks for the clarification, guys; I thought so. Oh well, no need for wishful thinking, then. 2G or not 2G...blah, curse you Hamlet!

max speed technically...(at least in Germany)
GSM:
G --> 56kps (0,05MBit/s)
E --> 256kps (0,25Mbit/s)
UMTS:
3G --> 384kps (0,38Mbit/s)
HSDPA --> 3,6; 7,2; 14.4 Mbit!!! (depending on operator) --> sometimes called 3.5G
LTE (long term evolution) --> 4G (Generation)
coming in 2010 from 25Mbit onwards
using opera, just for surfing, i think EDGE is enough. (without using flash in opera)

p.s. @galaxys: the old analog network is to be considered as the 1st generation; GSM (incl. EDGE) is the 2nd generation. EDGE is some sort of speed upgrade like HSDPA for UMTS.

Your saying that it said 3G on the top of your screen not just G? If so can you post what rom/radio you are using?

Is this on the top bar or is it the popup network setting bubble? Take a pic for us...

There is a setting, probably hidden and changable via Advance Config and/or HD Tweak where if a network has 3G capability then it shows "<network> - 3G" (I disabled it via one of them)
This is regardless of whether your phone itself can handle the 3G network, which in the case of Touch HD it cannot as the device does not support the frequency of US 3G bands
Mine shows "O2 UK - 3G" for this reason regardless of whether it says G, E, 3G or H at the top of the screen.
Additionally, the "generation" things are as follows:
- - GSM - 1G
G - GPRS - 2G
E - EDGE - 2.5G
3G - UMTS - 3G (surprise surprise)
H - HSDPA - 3.5G

3G versus E versus H X1i

Hi, I recently turned off HSDPA/HSUPA in Advanced Networks settings. Now my phone displays 3G most of the time. What speed am I really receiving with 3G being displayed. Running DSL Mspeed I seem to get 60-95kbs with the 3G displayed. Is it really Edge performance with 3G being sent by AT&T? I did this change to see if battery performance will increase.

speed really depends from your location and what your provider allows/provides.
anyways, with 3G I think the max you can get is round 2mbps, going up to 7.2mbps if you switch on hsdpa.
but as I say, all depends of your provider, in mine, I get more speed with hsdpa enabled
check the speed with H and compare yourself.
if you wana save battery switch to G/E and be sure to disable data conection once you're done using it

Thanks, I was really trying to find out if 3G was just a push by AT&T and not by a provider. Guess I can try a t mobile SIM and see what they push, since this phone does not have 1700 - 2100 combo.
With H enabled for both ( up/down ) its 1100kbs minimum.
With H disabled it's 95 max on 3G.
I don't see E too much but it;s about the same as 3G. Is there a cap/limit for E speeds?
I can't test this on tmobile since that SIM account does not have Internet access.

i have a x1i on tmobile. what site are u checking speeds at? i was thinking about switching to att for 3g but if the speeds are not that much faster i'll just stick to tmobile.

3G problems

is anyone running the IOLITE phone on TMOBILE US with a 3G connection?

well, better now than never...here is the answer:
nobody is running 3g on iolite with t'mo...
3g freq on iolite is 2100 mhz, and that is a hardware spec that cannot be changed with softwares updates...
im in Chile and have the same problem...here i can't use 3G network...only EDGE.
sad but true...

Here in Spain, the 3G connection is well, is fast! (with Orange)

I'm also have unlocked Iolite and according to spec it have following:
GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, UMTS 900, UMTS 2100
CSD, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA, UMTS/WCDMA, GPS
So I think it should work with 3G network.
I preordered 3G network package from my ISP (Orange, IL) and configure it properly, according to ISP instruction... but whenever I enable Data Connection it always show "G" letter on top bar.
On Iolite support site I read following:
You will see these icons on the title bar when your device is connected to the Internet. G means connected via GPRS. E means connected via EDGE. 3G means connected via 3G. H means connected via 3.5G.

Somebody know another way how to check with network I connected GPRS or 3G?

igor7: If you are connected to 3G network, your carrier name usually has 3G in name. For example 3G Vodafone instead of Vodafone. You should also check, which frequency is used for 3G in your country. If it is not 900 or 2100 MHz, you can't use Iolite for 3G.
EDIT: It is 2100 MHz in Israel. So next step is to check, if you are within 3G network coverage

UMTS vs HSPA indicator?

Hey - so, I searched for an answer to this, but couldn't find one.
Is there a way to determine whether you're on HSDPA or UMTS on the Nexus One? T-Mobile USA is supposedly all 7.2Mbps HSDPA, right? I'm getting download speeds of max 700kbps in Minneapolis, MN.

Most 3G towers havent had their backhaul upgraded to support faster speeds I only geet 700-1000kbps down at my house, but in downtown DC i was getting 3mbps+
Just go to settings, about phone, status and it says UMTS or HSDPA.
In CM-5.0 beta it shows H for HSDPA and 3G for UMTS.

Ah, thanks for explaining that. I can see that I'm getting HSDPA if I'm in the middle or just after a big download - seems to switch to it temporarily as needed. Or maybe I'm imagining it.

If you go to Settings>About Phone>Status, it will either say Edge, UMTS, or HSDPA, depending on what you're connected to. I usually get UMTS when I get 3G, although I've seen HSDPA a couple times as well.
