Something strange just started happening to my 838pro.
I travel frequently and am using the iGo universal power adapter to charge my laptop and usb accessories, including my 838pro and 818pro. And for the past couple of months, this has been flawless. But just now (literally just now), while plugged into the the usb power from iGo, the power charging icon does not come up on the 838pro. I have tried reseating the usb plug to no vail. However, after I soft reset and plug-in the iGo usb plug, the 838pro is charging again.
This has happened to be serveral times in the past 30 mins (I am at the airport....) Has this happen to any of the gurus here?

I left my MDA Pro dangling off the USB port on my desktop last night and I swear I saw the battery indicator icon report "charging". Pick the device up this morning and within 1 minute of being disconnected from the PC, it bleeps a "battery low" warning and says 1 hour remaining. Blame the user, blame the PC or blame the universal?
Hi xiasma. I took delivery of my Exec yesterday and gave it a full charge from the mains adapter.
Today I have it plugged into and charging through the USB port of my laptop. With my old XDAII, I would leave it like this with the screen on and synchronising all day. I have noticed that when I do this with the Exec it steadily looses charge even though it says “charging”. If I turn off the device or even just the screen it gains charge.
Are you still experiencing similar?
Are you both using high power USB ports? I'm not experiencing any problems using a 'proper' USB port, but if I plug the JasJar into my PC's keyboard (for instance) it will sync, but won't charge the phone.
I guess using a USB hub might have a similar effect? The JasJar screen must be pretty power hungry, so maybe the power filtering through to the JasJar from your PC isn't high enough?
Ahh.... That would certainly seem to make sense. My laptop is a three year old Dell. Maybe the early USB ports put out less power and its not enough to run and charge it at the same time. I will check it out.
Thanks for the pointer
My USB hubs are all powered and linked to the PC and I haven't come accross this issue. Perhaps try one of those?
Joe
Hi joebongo. I spoke to Dell following sub69’s reply and a powered hub is what they suggested as well. I will be ordering on this morning
I am getting the same problems with my car charger too. I am currently trying it with the screen at half brightness but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If anything this is more problematical as I want to run GPS so can't shut the lid.
My new M3100 is great, apart from one thing. I seem unable to charge it using any of the three in-car adapters I have that worked a treat with my Prophet.
Anyone know if this is an issue, or just specific to my M3100 (which appears to not be charging properly even when on USB or mains adapter)?
Cheers,
Sam
i have tried 2 different USB car chargers and neither have worked. Last one was 1A but still no joy.
Did you drain up the batt? I mean, was it full discharged when you attemped to recharge it? I have the same problem, no way to recharge it, at least the orange light doesn't show up.
If i try it at home, no prob. But what with a usb? no way
There are issues with some car charger USB connections.
I do not suffer this problem because I find it very useful to have an "inverter" permanently in the car. For those that have not seen these, it is a device that converts the battery voltage to mains supply voltage. This allows you to plug in as if you were at home. Handy for your hermes, laptop, phone etc etc without the hassle of special in car setups - just plug in with your normal mains plug. Most of these devices just plug into your cigarette lighter socket, although I have mine permanently wired in - so I also have the socket still available.
here is a UK example but I imagine they are available for all countries:

There is a known issue on car charging where the device will only charge when switched off. If this is your problem see the wiki here or my link below.

I've had that problem too. Strangely enough, restarting my 8525 gets the car charger to start working
try powering off your unit, it will get the orange light. Turn it back on after 5 mins and the charging will hold. not sure why.
I was having the same problem as mentioned above with a usb car charger that came with my GPS, however I just received my car charger from HTC FINALLY! With the HTC car charger and home charger, I have no issues charging the Hermes where I sometimes run into problems with say a generic motorola or igo power adapter - these sometimes require me to restart my device before charging begins.
By the way, I am going on a trip where I'll be away from power for 4 days ... can anyone recommed a portable cell phone charger that runs either off of AA batteries or solar power?
I think there is another thread about this somewhere, but I don't have time to look it up. I've had this same problem with several chargers that worked fine on my Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard). History is that there is a firmware issue on the TyTN that checks for a data pin in the USB interface coming from the charger, and if it doesn't have the right voltage on it, the phone doesn't charge. When you totally power down the device (holding down power button for a while and then hitting yes to the power down question), then the charger works. It's when the device is in standby that it doesn't work right, because the firmware checks for the pin to be correct, doesn't find it, and disables the charging circuitry.
When the PDA part of the phone is turned on and I plug the unit into the AC wall charger or car charger the phone will not always go into charge / full power mode (i.e. the charge light does not come on, the screen does not go to max brightness as it has been defined in the settings, and the bettery icon at the bottom of the sceen does not show that the unit is on AC/external power). I have tried this on the OEM charger and several other mini-USB chargers - one charger will work one time but will not work later that same day. The only way to ensure a charger will work while I am using the PDA is to soft rest the unit right before I plug it in to the AC or car charger.
Only the PC/ActiveSync USB cables charge any time (PDA on or off) when plugged in to a PC.
Is this a hardware problem or a software problem? Please HELP!!!

Have not personally come across this, though I did once get the fairly common red light when Hermes knows the chargers there but refuses to charge.
Whether this is software or hardware is not straightforward. At first you would tend towards a hardware issue if the PC USB link always charges. Suggesting a fault in the contacts of the charger devices.
However an increasing number of phones generally have circuitry to detect their own chargers. Notably many of the Motorola phones that actually pop up a note saying unauthorised charger. I am not aware that Hermes has this function and does not have any message pop up. The surprise here is that the OEM charger is similarly flaky. However if a software reset without moving connections around does sound more software than hardware and possibly related to a loaded application?

Seems to be a known problem:

Hi, My X1 will not charge when connected to the adapter that came with it, and not when connected to my mini USB hub, which is use to charge other devices.
Needless to say, I have tried different cables and so…
It only charges when connected to a PC directly.
I have tried the different USB-to-PC modes, with no change, I have tried a few ROM’s, with no change.
I would love some input on this…

is the hub a powered hub?
mine is and my x1 charge just fine
if it's not powered then everything connected to the hub share the 500mA max power 1 usb line can provide
which would explain why it dont charge
try and restart it, take out the battery and put it in and try to see if it works then.
It's a powered hub, yes. It "used" to work without problems.
And I have tried rebooting, removing battery, flashing another rom, etc etc, with no luck.

The hub is USB 1.1 or 2.0?
my external harddisk "WD Passport" doesn't work when connected with a usb 1.1 extension, while works great when connected to usb2.0.
[OT]Does X1 charge and work with ANY miniusb cable or just the original SE one?
I can confirm that the mini-USB cable is standard. I currently have 3 (one on the mains unit, one on my home computer and one on my computer in the office) in use and they all work perfectly.
Mine wouldn't charge from the mains yesterday, but it's fine again now. Curious.
mine had some problems with charging in the beginning. but its working now, there is something fishy with the charging, havnt had the time to look at it
It's really strange. I worked great the first two weeks i had the phone, then completly stopped.
Now i can only charge with my PC turned on.

I, also, have noticed some odd charging behaviour.
On occasion, i have noticed the battery life has been very short. It seems to coincide with strange charging results.
Once or twice, now, i have had the phone plugged in to the mains charger, overnight, and it has had less charge in the morning than it had the previous evening.
I am trying to figure out any pattern, but up to now, it evades me.
I'm hoping for a firmware fix, as i have several minor issues with the phone. There was a rumour that a firmware was being readied for a xmas/new year release. Patiently waiting, cos i adore this phone.
I recently bought a new charger, HTC PC T300 for my 8525, the problem is that it stops charging as soon as i unplug the charger and plug it back in the phone. until and unless i soft-reset my device it won't start charging again. it charges continuously when my device is turned off. i checked my charger on another 8525 and it gives the same problem. the charger is fine. it gives 5V 1A.
i am using Schaps 4.31 Lite.
please help.....
Are you talking about a car charger? Like this one;?
http://www.4-mobiles-car-chargers.co.uk/sony-ericsson/t300/car-chargers/usb-car-charger-plug-head
If so it's not an official HTC charger and there is a known issue with some car chargers that require a soft reset agter the initial plug in. I am not aware of a workaround other than doing a soft reset. Tere are threads on these boards about this problem - but not an easy solution that I remember.
