Touchpad pin entry? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I use a pin (numerics) to protect the data on my MDA vario 2. I type in this pin using the stylus keyboard. Anyway, I saw that the Swisscom version uses a touchscreen input panel to type in the pin for the PPC. Does anybody know how to get this done with the MDA Vario 2?

Try going in to the Pin's setting area, there should be a radio button or something for making the password stronger. The V.keyboard u see is for letters input.

The Swiss guy is using a numeric code to protect his device. A numeric touch pas shows up to enter it. That's what I would like to have. Any idea? Maybe a program in the Swisscom extented ROM?

Hi,
There are 2 ways to protect you data (not SIM PIN) on WM5 devices. They are 'Simple PIN' or 'Strong alphanumeric'. When you use 'simple pin' you will be prompted with a standard numeric input display. If however you use 'Strong alphanumeric' then you will get a text box to enter your password into and you either use the onboard keyboard or the slide-out QWERTY one.
I much prefer the 'simple PIN' for ease of entry.
Gav.

Thx GavinN, interessting: I use a 'Simple PIN' (it's selected) but I get allways a text box to enter your password into, so I have to either use the onboard keyboard or the slide-out QWERTY one.

Hey D,
That's interesting. I enabled it on my TyTN and looked through the registry but can't find the setting for where this is stored. I was looking at it a few weeks back so there is some sort of entry which you might be able to 'hack'.
I'll look again later and post another reply.
Gav.

THX! Looking forward ;-)

I get the simple pin with touch pad. Its been there from first use and is the sim card pin that I set up on my old phone before I upgraded. Not sure how you set up a sim card pin on the tytn. Do you have another handset you could try setting one up on?

It's not the pin for the SIM card. I use a second password to secure my device, and I uase only numbers (simple key settings). Now my device shows the keyboard and a text box to enter the key instead of a numeric touch pad, even after a hard reset. Could somebody post the registry entries of HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin with all keys and entries? Maybe I can look for differences to my settings.

Hi D:
--ROOT---
Folder: DIALER
Folder: PROGRESS
DWORD: Enabled = 1
STRING: ext = \windows\phcanhtc.dll
--DIALER--
Folder: landscape
Folder: portrait
--PROGRESS--
Folder: landscape
Folder: portrait
Lots of other folders under them but nothing 'Simple PIN' related.

Some suggestions. You can try selecting the security to the higher security (e.g. not "Simple PIN") option, save it, wait and reboot the system. Then, go into the security again, and try simple pin to toggle the settings, which may help.
And, also, as with Windows, and Linux, there are security concerns over the users level of password protection. As I know, for some devices, there are this coopoerate mode, which seems to be like the WindowsXP Professional Edition. Such 'higher-end' edition often has default higher security level (eg user cannot use short password, user password will automatically expire, etc). So, I'm wondering, does your phone shows any form of.. "Professinal" tag on it?

Hi G.,
looks same at my device. I will walk to a t-mobile shop to check another device.

No, no professional or else device.
I tried to use higher encryption, rebooting etc. and then simple pin. I always get an alpha input field and keyboard for entry, but never the numeric touch pad entry. I got no f... clue why.

Heureka, I got it: I selected simple password and entered 5 digits, resulting in no warnung or else and the keyboard for entry. Now I enterd exactly 4 digits and the numeric touch pad for entry appeared ...

Eh?
Typical Microsoft!!! Glad you got it sorted.

Any Cingular 8125 Keyboard Tips/Tweaks?

I love the 8125 with the exception of two features, both involving the keyboard.
1. Is there anyway to increase the time that the keyboard backlight stays on? And also, to turn the keyboard backlight on as soon as you open it?
Whenever I slide the keyboard out it's a little difficult to see what's on all the keys, as the characters are a light color and they are on a light-colored background. After you start typing the backlight comes on, but you need to tap one key to get it to light up in the first place. Is there a tweak to have the keyboard light come on when you slide it out? Without having to tap a key? And once it's on, can I edit a setting or reg key to have it stay on until I slide it back in?
2. If you'll notice, the first letter typed will always capitalize as soon as you tap the spacebar after completing the first typed word. This can be nice at times if you're typing in a Word document or something similar. However, typing passwords has become downright frustrating! You definitely do NOT want any letters capitalized when you're typing in a password. Plus the fact that all passwords show only as asterisks when typing them makes the auto-capitalizion hurt more than help. I always have to switch to the SIP when typing in passwords, as I get way too many "incorrect password" popups due, I'm certain, to the capitalization issue. Then, of course, changing to number mode (double-tap the round red dot key)can also be hairy when all you see are asterisks - It's difficult to know whether or not the mode changed when you try to reverse the numbers mode.
I've searched here and on the HoFo site to no avail.
Any help or advice is appreciated!
In addition to the above, I'd like to know how to accept an autocompletion suggestion from the keyboard, i.e. without using the stylus.

Hit arrow key down and then the enter key. As for part two of J-Mac's post, if you're in a program that has a soft key bar at the bottom this simple registry edit will give a hand Caps/Function indicator:
Keyboard status indicator – adds a handy indicator that shows you when caps lock and symbol lock are activated on your keyboard.
Use Total Commander to navigate to \HKCU\ControlPanel\Keyb
Create a new entry with the name EnableIndicator
Assign the new entry a DWORD value of 1
perform a soft reset
and auto-capitalization can be changed by going to the Input control panel applet, it's on the Options tab "Capitalize beginning of sentence" or somesuch
As for keyboard backlight - no hacks known of for the Wizard :|

Thanks for that - obvious when you know how!
Thanks for the keyboard indicators - very helpful.
Zeboxx, I already set that option, but it appears to only apply to the SIP - not the physical keyboard.

Great tips, BoycottValvoline! Indicator is working fine. That's a big help.
I don't know of anyone who has managed to come up with a way to extend the keyboard backlight, though.I can't find a registry key that addresses the backlight - doesn't appear to be one.

I've done this on my 8125 and I get no indicator when I use the hardware keyboard.
Any help, anyone?
Thanks.
I have an 8125 and it worked fine for me.
Take another look and make sure that you entered everything exactly as shown. You'd be surprised how easy it is to be off.
For example, check Start>Settings>Personal>Input>Word Completion and make sure that "Add a space after suggested word" is NOT selected. (If it is, you may be adding a space after the DWORD value without knowing it).
Plus check your spelling - Case and punctuation must be perfect when creating the registry key.
Finally, perform a soft reset afterwards. Now check the bottom of the screen when the hardware keyboard is slid out. (Make sure first that you have a program open that requires the keyboard.) Try hitting the shift key once, then twice. Same with the Function key. Once, then twice.
Once on, the Shift key shows a "C" and makes shift active for one keystroke. Double tap it and CAPS mode is on and the "C" stays there till you tap it twice again.
Function key works the same, but you'll see a solid dot instead of a "C".
Has anyone resolved the problem with making the backlight time stay on longer?

I haven't tried it, but I found this registry key on another site:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout
It should be the number of seconds to stay on. Try 30.
Nah, that's on a few sites - but it doesn't work on the Wizard.
It's a hardware issue; no registry fix can do it on the Wizard.

If it's an .exe file, you have to install from your desktop through Active Sync. If it's a .cab file, just drag and drop it to your phone the Active Sync's "Explore" option.
Then, navigate to the file on your phone and tap it to begin the installation.
Backlight duration
Sorry to teel you guys , but the keypad backlight duration on the wizard is hardware controlled ! ! ! So no software / registry hack will lengthen / shorten the duration !

PIN code entry options?

Hi Guys,
I just got a Jamin and have it setup with MS Exchange Direct Push. Working great so far.
Our company IT policy has the device set to 10mins timeout and it will lock. I need to enter a 6 digit PIN code to unlock the device.
Currently when I unlock, I can choose the keyboard or letter recogniser input options etc. I have seen screenshots where you get a simple numerical touch pad on the screen for the PIN code. How do I get this? This way I can enter the code with my finger instead of using the stylus.
I think the big numerical pad you see for the pin input is the built-in security feature of pocket pc. I don't think what you are refering to (in your case) is the standard pocket pc pin thing, as the standard is only 4 digits (vs yours, 6 digits).
What you could do is to try to search for thumb keyboard, or big keyboard, which offers you very big keyboard that you can use for anything (e.g. not just entering pin). I find that difficult to use as you need to re-train your memory to know each character's location.
I think there are some posts available in this forum, but just google it will do.

HTC Phone Pad - Problem on 8525

Hello all. Sorry if this is a repeat. I installed the "phonepad_wm5_strongarm_492.cab" on my Cingular 8525. Installation went fine...and I do have the "Phone Pad" as an option now under "Input Methods" in Message. However, whenever I click on it to select it as the method - nothing happens. I even go into the Options and set the Phone Pad as my Input method - still nothing. It allows me to select "Phone Pad" as my option - but the little virtual Keyboard on the screen still stays there and the phone pad never comes up. Then I go back in and check my settings - and Keyboard is still seletcted.
Did I miss something when installing? Is there something special I need to do? Also - important note - I do have the PALM SMS Thread CAB installed (and working VERY well might I add) - could that be part of the problem? (Although - I tried enabling the Phone Pad from within Outlook directly - and still no good).
I would REALLY appreciate your help...thanks!
i think you should try this..another software for virtual phonepad
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286749
Thanks - worked great. Once question - besides hitting the space bar...is there another way to "accept" a letter or word? I.e. if I end up having to manually spell a word that isn't in the T9 dictionary. The only way I found to accept a word (or single character) is to hit the Space bar.
Thanks again.

Password Entry Locks to Numeric Only

Hello,
I've seen this problem mentioned a few times, but i've never found a fix for it. When using the 20 key touch pad to enter a password it locks you into numeric only and there is no way to swtich. I'm always forced to switch to the old school stylus keyboard.
What makes it worse is that for some reason if I try to enter text into the URL field in Opera mobile it also locks me into the numpad, forcing me to use the goto command or the old shool stylus.
I know everyone suggests the cootek keyboard to work around this, but I'd really like to fix the Touch Keyboard as I find the cootek one a little gaudy.
Thanks for any help!
j
Pretty please?

Where does this keyboard come from?

I have the 16 key touch dual.
So on input options, you have the touch keypad, when I select that sometimes this comes out (please see attached)
I like it thought better than the 20 key touch keyboard.
Yeh... Where?
I second this, it works really well but there is no option to bring it up on the dual... it just randomly appears sometimes when you need to input text.
Thirded.
And whats more, why does text input seem to vary on web pages?
I've got some where it defaults to numeric input when it should be alpha numeric (ie. passwords), others where XT9 seems to be off (the subject on mails in facebook).
Its so stupidly all over the place and inconsistent! If I could just get this one to pop up all the time I'd be happy.
Doesn't that keyboard show when there's no text entry field?
And yes, i want it too, why would they disable it for normal usage?
Yeh I have found the keyboard to be all over the place when it comes to deciding if it will give you tx9, abc, 123, etc.... Anyone know a way to set one of the two alphanumerics as a default at least?
ok ive had this appear a few times now but couldnt figure out why, as you have been asking for it i have been playing around and think i know what is causing it. you may not need everything listed below but these are the settings on my device if you play around with them you should be able to narrow it down.
I'm running Toms rom, found here
i have disabled threaded sms by using the second setting here
i have enabled the favourite people button on the htc home screen by deleteing the key here
the only other app i have that may have changed a setting is the HTC home customiser.
After making these changes tick the enable xt9 setting in romsettings app, exit the app, then go back into it and untick the enable t9 setting, after closing romsettings you should have the keyboard shown in the second screen shot
as far as i can see this changes the keyboard in all applications
Thats great! Still albeit of a noob so you lost me somewhere there, is there a way to this on the stock ROM?
short answer is i dont know. try looking for an applcation called rom settings after installing it there is a t9 setting. untick it and closethe application if this makes no dfference you may want to try altering the other settings and then trying again until it works.

Ok will try that thanks. On the side, when you untick "T9" does this make "abc" default text entry as well?
I have confirmed that this keyboard layout come out when no text entry is needed.

thats the default action anyway, with the changes detailed the keyboard is available when entering text, if you look at the second image you will see that the cursor is actually in the message box, its the black line at the end of the word hello

Eh? Maybe I overdosed on the thick pills last night, but that doesn't make any sense? If I click on a password field in IE, sometimes the main phone keypad always seems to default to numeric entry. But clicking in the field itself pops up this lovely keyboard.
It really does make no sense at all. There doesn't appear to be any standard/global keyboard settings.
And this is in v6 of WinMo, you would have thought they would have got the basics right by now, but the darned sent items has the useless option of "order by from" - when all the sent items are sent from the same person.
Its got plenty of potential, but it just seems like lots of separate teams were implementing it, doing their own thing without any centralised discussion/design.
Has anyone managed to get this to work with the standard T-Mobile [UK] ROM ?
any updates on this as well? it would be nice to just get an option for this
I got it to work, rather by chance, but thing is after that, I could switch to back to the touchpad type anymore.
I installed POCKETCM KEYBOARD. After doing that, somehow it locked this keyboard in when I choose touchpad.
Its rather a workaround, but for those who to use it premanently, you can do it
it also shows up at times when you are entering a password
Ouch ! I read to quickly and did'nt see the word "permanently" !
It does the same for me after installing pocketpc keyboard and even after uninstalling it !!!
Did you find a way to get the classic keyboard back ? This one is nice but there are some important keys missing as "." and a key to hide the keyboard !
Thanks
EDIT : The installation of Resco Keyboard got all the original settings back + Resco Keyboard of course.
So if you need to use the famous "hidden HTC keyboard", simply install Resco Keyboard and then Pocketpc keyboard.
You will then have your classic "touch" keyboards replaced by the "hidden keyboard" (+Resco Keyboard installed of course).
But to my mind, Resco keyboard alone is better...
