Price - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi
I live in South Africa and the Hermes is being released here as the HTC Tytn, and i would love to get it.
I currently own a MDA Vario, and i love this phone, but the hermes is always going to be better and thats why i want it.
Can anybody give me prices of this product brand new or second hand
thanks

Brand new, unlocked TyTN: around 700USD ... in the US atleast ..

HTC TyTN in RSA
The phones will be sold by Leaf Wireless, but I don't know at what price. I bought mine in London a few months ago. It cost me about R6500.
Great phone but has many software problems at this stage. Once they release their first upgrade things should be ok.

Thanks, i am aware that Leaf will be distributing them, But the prices in SA will be quite alot.
I mean the K-Jam(Wizard) is currently over R7000 at most places in South Africa, and The cheapest you can get it is R6400
So i cant imagine how much the Hermes will be
Need to go check how much i can get it from t-mobile from
I have heard that Virgin Mobile overseas is releasing it under their own name, so im sure it will reach us over here

Where to by a Phrophet in North America?

Hey guys,
After weighing out the Atom vs Phrophet debate, it looks like a buddy of mine and myself have decided on getting a couple i-Mate Jamin's but now the thing is trying to find a seller in North America. Preferrably in the USA because I'm sure it'll be cheaper since we have access to an American credit card and an American address. So far on eBay I see them going for $650USD/$750CAD. Only one seller is selling the i-mate Jamin. What's the lowest price I can get one for especially if I buy two at one time? If anyone is selling used in excellent condition how much does a used Jamin go for? Thanks a lot guys.

Should I purchase TyTN from UK for use in Australia (Optus)?

Hi there,
I have been evaluating the HTC TyTN and I think I'm ready to purchase one. However, they're not available in Australia AT ALL!
I have been looking around and Expansys in the UK seems to have it the cheapest approx (GBP400 + Shipping). Plus, I like the HTC form factor better than the others.
however...I heard some real scare stories about something to do with them possibly not working in 3G mode on the Optus network here in Australia. I can only imagine that this MAY have something to do with the radio ROM - am I right?
I checked the WIKI (see, I did my homework before posting) and there is only ONE where they can't work out the location yet - I am assuming that the is the ROM for Australia - would I be right?
I guess the question I am asking is - am I in for a problem if I purchase one of these in the UK (or other place depending on your recommendations here in this post)??? I really want this phone so I can roam in Japan (3G) and have WIFI to use with Skype and also have push calendaring.
All help appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
It's so crap that they aren't available in Australia. And I live in Perth, the most isolated city in the world! Pfft. I managed to get my hands on a TyTN from eBay though (where I get most of my obscure stuff .. well, obscure in Australia), and I'm on the Three network and it works awesomely. even the video calling is great.
~Louis x_.
I can confirm that the 3G works on Optus as the device I purchased for review worked on the optus network. 3G calls were fine just as they were on the jasjar and the 3g speed was pretty much the same as on the jasjar.
Additionally it may be worth mentioning if you can hold out for a month and if you dont mind paying $1300 (thats a guess but its looking like that will be the price) then the imate-jasjam is set to be released in Aus late september.
hey guys.. i m using my Dopod CHT 9000 with i-mate WWE Jasjam rom in New Zealand with Vodafone. everything is fine with 3g, video calling and 3g data connection. However one thing that is MMS. It is not working in anyway in NZ of MMS. Even i bring up the phone to vodafone NZ , no one can do with it. Hope these info help a bit as NZ and AUS were quite similar in some terms. Cheers

It should work on Optus 3G no problem, mate. The problem will be getting Expansys UK sell you one if they find out you're from Oz.
Also, have you checked the US/Canada options? The devices work out cheaper with the exchange rate, and the shipping is normally faster.
There are a couple of US and Canadian sellers on eBay and also on Howard Forums. Check them out.

Tytn will be available in australia in a couple of weeks. It will be launched by Dopod International and will be called Dopod 838 Pro.
^^ Dopod never have and are not intending to release this device in Australia. Dopod specialises in the asian markets, and at this stage dopod doesnt even have their act together enough to sell the device in Hong Kong where they actually have dopod outlets.
The imate-jasjam will be available in Australia at some stage, however from all accounts for in the short-term (1-3 months) it appears Telstra will have exclusive rights to this device and only they will sell it.
So yes 3G works fine
your options are import a TyTN variant from the internet or alternatively you can pay $1450 and order a jasjam through expansys NZ right now, or wait and see how much telstra charges for these.
on a side note, what good data plans do they have in Aus,
I'm loving paying 3 pound 75 for unlimited in UK ( web n walk friends and relations ) ( less than 10 bucks aus ) but not looking forwards getting back to aus and having stupidly expensive data again....
Email I received from Dopod International (ANZ) at the begining of the week.
Dear XXXX
Thank you for your interest in our company and products.
Dopod plan to launch our company and release the “838 Pro” in the next 2 weeks to the market. At this stage I suggest you contact XXXX @ XXXX.com.au)for an invite to our launch event at Opera house.
Dopod in Aust. on Optus
I have been running a Dopod 838 Pro in Australia on the Optus 3G network for over two weeks.
Dopod have an office in Australia and are releasing their product in Australia, through all of the normal channels.
Works great and is a good solid device.

Picking out a Hermes. Do most of you use 8525's?

I'm kicking around the idea of buying a Hermes, it's a sweet phone and it seems to have fallen a bit in price since I last looked at it. When searching for the different branded versions on eBay, I noticed that I could pick up a Cingular-branded Hermes (8525) a good deal cheaper than the rest of them. Are there any major shortcomings to the 8525 over other versions of the Hermes outside of the missing front camera? Using an American GSM provider, would I even miss the front camera?
I'm on T-Mobile, but if I grabbed a Cingular Hermes I'd obviously just go ahead and unlock it and use it with my service. Honestly, I think it would be pretty sweet to get the T-Mo UK branded Hermes (MDA Vario II) and carry that around instead. Then my friends would be like "whoa dog why does my T-Mobile store not have this phone how did you score it!!!" and I would be like "hell nah homies this **** is elite". But alas, it's not worth paying $600+ for a T-Mo Europe branded one when I can get the Cingular-branded one for well under 500.
Do you guys who have used multiple Hermes' have any preference? Would I likely be just as well off with an 8525 (given that I plan to flash it) as an HTC branded "TyTN" or other HERM200 version of the phone?
Thanks!
I got the 8525... If your not going to use the video calling, why pay more?

That's just it, though -- I'm wondering if it's even possible to use video calling in the United States. Is it?
More importantly, are there any replacement shells or cover-ups available for the 8525 such that one could make it appear not to be a Cingular device? I know I'm weird, but if I buy a Hermes for use with T-Mobile USA, I think it looks silly to have Cingular branding on the ****.
Thanks so much!

I bought a Vodafone 1605 on Ebay and used it with T-mobile and now Cingular....I don't mind the brand name on the phone cos I know it's all the same inside
The Vario II pricing is coming down in the UK ... just got given one for £50 on a renewal which is roughly 60% less than I was quoted about six weeks ago.
(typing as I wait for a full resync on my shiny new wm6 black to complete )
You might be able to snap one up off eBay UK on the cheap if your timing is good ...

I am pretty sure a little alcohol and rubbing would remove the branding.... if your really desperate you could use a little nail polish remover...
I think you can buy "shells" for these phones on ebay. I don't know if they are interchangeable, aka using a Vario II shell on a Cingular 8525, but I would assume they would as long as the button configuration is similar.

That's actually a really good idea; I could only find about two total MDA Vario II's on ebay.com (which makes perfect sense), but when I went to ebay.co.uk there were ****loads. Unfortunately, it seems that most sellers only offer to ship within the UK so I'd have to find one ahead of time that would be okay with shipping to the States.
That brings my next question though. What's the deal with QWERTY vs. QWERTZ keyboards? The MDA Vario II seems to be the latter, and I've typed on a QWERTY all my life and really have no intention of switching. Is it possible to not only map the buttons to QWERTY on a Vario II, but to physically switch the keys?
Man, what a pain this is all turning out to be. I guess I should probably just score a Cingular-branded Hermes and be done with it.

Sapphire available in Spain

Today, Vodafone Spain has announced they will be releasing the Magic in a few hours, no word on prices/contracts yet.
They have been teasing on their blog for some days now, and they now tease some more with a countdown to release ( http://tienda.vodafone.es/ofertas/htc_magic/ ), scheduled to hit 0 at 17:00, local time.
Let's hope they put a reasonable price tag on it, though it's definetly doubtful.
Cheers!
Edit: pricing is now available ( http://www.unandroideenvodafone.com/Notaprensa.pdf )
Any chance of finding an unlocked version of this in Spain any time soon?
Vodafone is not selling them without a contract, though I'm preety sure these fellas will find their way onto ebay in no time.

Hi guys
Just to say that I have purchased in Tienda On-Line of Vodafone my Magic. I am really impressed, it is a great device.
I am still learning and starting to play, but it looks like it is going to be very funny.
BTW: they recommend strongly to contract the flat navigation tariff to avoid billshock, but it is only a recomendation...

USD240 is absolutely fake.
here brand new HD in China is around 527USD. just for reference.
JohnQ is right, I bought mine for around $550 US in Shenzhen about a week ago, $240 is probably either used or a "shanzhai" phone (aka rip off look-a-like).
A note however, do look closely at what you are buying as there aren't any "official" HTC retailers here in China-- where HTC operates under it's Chinese subsidary, "Dopod". Most of the HTC phones in China are brought across the border either from Hong Kong or Taiwan.
I had the store clerk bring me five Touch HDs to try and I picked the best one and haggled with them until they threw in an extra battery.
If you'd rather be sure to get the real thing, I recommend you get it from Hong Kong; it's pretty cheap there too. In China, Dopod also has an identical device also called the Touch HD, however, the difference-- like between all Dopod phones and HTC phones-- is that the Dopod versions don't include Wifi and 3G. Gov't restrictions maybe? :S

HAHA , DOPOD announced HD early this year. you know how much they are selling in the beginning? RMB8288, As exactly the same with its model number T8288, DOPOD is crazy. DOPOD HD doesn't include WIFI/3G
Can get it with 3G and Wifi in China
It is possible to get the Touch HD in here in China with 3G and Wifi....If you buy a Dopod branded phone, it won't have either, but if you go to a mobile store and ask for "shui huo" you can get them. The "shui huo" versions of the phones are usually brought in from Europe then brought across the border (tax free). Don't let the sales staff trick you into paying more for them. These phones are cheaper than the Dopod branded ones and they are exactly the same phone (with more features enabled). As mentioned above, you also have to be aware of fakes, but if you take your time and check out multiple vendors, you should be ok....Always ask to try the phone before you buy it (ALWAYS).
Additionally, it will be extremely difficult to find one with a WWE rom. I usually come on here and flash a WWE rom as soon as I get my phone...Never had a problem...
China has some great deals and some great rip-offs...Just exercise some caution and you should be fine. Test the phone and make sure the Wifi and 3G options work and you should be fine.
newer high-end mobile phones are ALWAYS cheaper in the US/EU than in china. IN fact, everything that is "name brand" or high-end is more expensive in China. THe idea that China is cheaper than the west is just totally wrong these days, when I go back to the USA I stock up on clothes, electronics, etc. as the quality is certain, there are no spy programs or disabled features, and the price is much lower. If you want to buy cheap garbage, it will be cheaper in China, but for anything nice it is MUCH more expensive.

That's not necessarily true...
HTC is a Taiwanese company and they export their products to places all over the world. One of them is Hong Kong, and as we all know, there are no taxes, customs, tariffs, or whatever on imported products there. Thus, electronics are generally cheaper in Hong Kong than they are elsewhere. Also, due to the proximity of Hong Kong and Taiwan, shipping is also cheaper than to the Americas for example, thus further reducing the end-user cost (however this may just be a little bit). Therefore, many of the "shui huo" HTC products brought into China from places like Hong Kong actually end up being cheaper (even more if you haggle and perhaps they'll throw in some goodies too!) than they are elsewhere.
Hope that sheds some light upon this issue.
So now now... don't go around making imperatives like "everything" all the time... hehe
This thread is really helpin me out.

You could try Mong Kok/Wang Jiao Computer Centre; you can get some great deals if you haggle...
Check it out. It's near the Ladie's/Women's Market.
